1. Asceticism of the Messenger ﷺ (1/4)
from the Prophet ﷺ who said, "One who goes early to the masjid" or "goes ˹to the masjid˺, Allah ﷻ prepares a lodging for him in Jannah every time he goes early.", or "goes."
he said: It was mentioned to God's Messenger ﷺ that a man slept at night until sunrise.
He ﷺ said: "that is a man in whose ear (or ears) Satan has urinated"
he said: i asked 'A'ishah (God be pleased with her): "how was the prayer of God's Messenger ﷺ?"
she said: "Who of you can [do] what God's Messenger ﷺ can [do]? His deeds were unending"
she said: God's Messenger ﷺ was plentiful in saying "Your transcendence, Allahumma. Our Lord, with Your praise, Allahumma. Forgive me" in his prostrations and bowing. He ﷺ begins with the Qur'an
she said: God's Messenger ﷺ bought food, on-loan, from a Jew and, as collateral for it, he ﷺ gave him a shield
he said:
I said to A'ishah (God be merciful to her):
How was God's Messenger's ﷺ character amongst his family?
She said:
"He was the most beautiful of people in character. He was not indecent nor inappropriate. Not yelling in the markets. Not responding to evil with evil, rather he would forgive and forget"
he said:
I asked A'ishah (God be pleased with her):
What did God's Messenger ﷺ do in his house?
She said:
"He would patch the clothes, mend the soles", and [stuff] like this
he said:
I said to A'ishah (God be pleased with her):
"Which things did God's Messenger ﷺ do when he entered his house?"
She said:
"He used to be [involved] in his family's jobs, then whenever the prayer entered, he would leave to pray [at the mosque]"
She said:
"God's Messenger ﷺ didn't leave a [single] dinar (gold coin) or dirham (silver coin).
Not a [single] sheep or camel.
he said:
"God's Messenger ﷺ died and he didn't leave any [gold] dinars nor [silver] dirhams. Nor any slaves nor newborns. He [only] left his shield as collateral with a Jew for thirty Sa' of food"
Abu Huraira reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ never found fault with food (served to him). If he liked anything, he ate it and if he did not like it he left it. (Using translation from Muslim 2064a)
he said:
God's Messenger ﷺ wasn't asked for anything, ever, [to which] he then said: No
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said one day, "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, there is neither a measure of wheat nor a measure of dates in the household of Muhammad." And indeed, on that day, there were nine verses for him and nine women on that day."
[Machine] I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ criticize any food. When he desired something, he would eat it, and when he disliked something, he would remain silent.
[Machine] "A Jew invited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to barley bread and boiled meat, so he accepted."
[Machine] My father said to me, "We have lived like this with our Prophet and we only have two types of food, dates and water." I asked him, "Do you know what the two types are?" He replied, "Dates and water."
[Machine] "And by my father, meaning the Prophet ﷺ , he left this world without being satisfied with bread made of bran."
[Machine] "And by Allah, the month would pass by the family of Muhammad ﷺ and no bread would be baked in it. I said, 'O Mother of the Believers, what did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to eat?' She said, 'We had neighbors among the Ansar who were rewarded by Allah with goodness. They had some milk and would send it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .'"
[Machine] A man entered upon the Prophet ﷺ while he was reclining on a cushion with a plate in front of him, containing a loaf of bread. The man placed the bread on the ground and moved the cushion, saying, "I am only a servant, I eat as a servant eats and I sit as a servant sits."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was invited to a meal, and when he finished, he said once he had eaten, he praised Allah and then said, "I have never filled my stomach with hot food since a certain time."
[Machine] I heard Al-Hasan say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command that food be brought to him, and then he would throw it on the ground and say, 'I am only a servant, I eat as a servant eats and I sit as a servant sits.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was presented with a container of almonds. When he tasted it, he asked, "What is this?" They replied, "It is almonds." The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) then said, "Keep it away from me, as it is the drink of extravagants."
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, when he sent him to Yemen, 'Beware of luxury and indulgence, for the servants of Allah are not indulgent.'"
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw Al-Ala' ibn Al-Hadrami wearing a long-sleeved Qatari shirt, so he called for a blade and cut it from the edges."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I do not ride on a rainbow, nor do I wear saffron-colored clothes, nor do I wear a shirt made of silk." Al-Hasan pointed to the pocket of his shirt and said, "Behold, the scent of men has no color, and behold, the scent of women has no scent."
[Machine] Umar ibn Abdul Aziz had a house in which there was what the Messenger of Allah left behind. There was a rickety bed with a sheet, and a pitcher to drink water from. There was also a broken jug in which things were placed, and a pillow stuffed with wool. There was a dusty carpet that looked like it was from the Jurmuqaniyya palm trees. Umar would say, "O Quraysh, this is the inheritance of the one whom Allah honored and favored above you. He left this world with what you see."
“Why don’t we invite the Prophet ﷺ to eat with us?” So they invited him and he came. He put his hand on the doorpost of the house and saw a thin curtain in the corner of the house, so he went back. Fatimah said to ‘Ali: “Go and catch up with him, and ask him: ‘What made you go back, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “I do not enter a well-decorated house.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3360)
[Machine] He informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Modesty is part of faith, modesty is part of faith, modesty is part of faith." Abdallah said, "This is Abu Umamah Al-Harithi." Abdallah said, "I asked my father, I said, 'What is modesty?' He said, 'Humility in one's clothing.'"
[Machine] He used to see it in one of our bedsheets, then he would rub it, and their bedsheets that day were made of wool.
[Machine] "I saw seventy people from the People of Excellence praying in a garment, and among them were those whose garment reached their knees and others whose garment was lower than that. When one of them would bow, he would hold his garment out of fear that his 'awrah would be exposed."
We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey. Some of us had been observing the fast and some of us had not been fasting. We got down at a place on a hot day. Most of us had the cloth for shelter. There were also those amongst us who sheltered (themselves against the rays of the) sun with the help of their hands. The observers of the fast fell down (on account of weakness). Those who had not observed it got up and pitched tents and watered the mounts. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The breakers of the fast have taken away the reward today. (Using translation from Muslim 1119a)

[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "What do I have to do with this world? My example and the example of this world is like that of a traveler who took a rest under a tree on a hot summer day, then he moved on and left it behind."

The Prophet ﷺ never took his meals at a dining table, nor in small plates, and he never ate thin wellbaked bread. (The sub-narrator asked Qatada, "Over what did they use to take their meals?" Qatada said, "On leather dining sheets." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5415)
