١۔ زُهُد الرَّسُول ﷺ ص ٢

ahmad-zuhd:51ʿAbdullāh from my father > al-Haytham b. Jamīl > Muḥammad / Ibn Muslim > Ibrāhīm / Ibn Maysarah > Ṭāwus

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, asceticism in the world brings ease to the heart and body, while longing for the world prolongs anxiety and sorrow."  

الزهد لأحمد:٥١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَيْسَرَةَ عَنْ طَاوُسٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ الزُّهْدَ فِي الدُّنْيَا يُرِيحُ الْقَلْبَ وَالْبَدَنَ وَإِنَّ الرَّغْبَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا تُطِيلُ الْهَمَّ وَالْحَزَنَ»

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The righteousness of the early generations of this Ummah (nation) is in asceticism and conviction, while its later generations perish due to stinginess and false hopes."  

الزهد لأحمد:٥٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «صَلَاحُ أَوَّلِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بِالزُّهْدِ وَالْيَقِينِ وَيَهْلِكُ آخِرُهَا بِالْبُخْلِ وَالْأَمَلِ»  

ahmad-zuhd:53ʿAbdullāh > Bayān b. al-Ḥakam > Muḥammad b. Ḥātim Abū Jaʿfar > Bishr b. al-Ḥārith > Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh > Layth > al-Ḥakam

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a servant neglects his work, Allah tests him with worries."  

الزهد لأحمد:٥٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا بَيَانُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ بِشْرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ عَنْ لَيْثٍ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِذَا قَصَّرَ الْعَبْدُ فِي الْعَمَلِ ابْتَلَاهُ اللَّهُ بِالْهَمِّ»  

ahmad-zuhd:54ʿAbdullāh > Bayān b. al-Ḥakam > Muḥammad b. Ḥātim > Bishr b. al-Ḥārith > ʿAbbād b. al-ʿAwwām > Hishām > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, "Which form of faith is best?" The Prophet replied, "Patience and forgiveness."  

الزهد لأحمد:٥٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي بَيَانُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ حَدَّثَنِي بِشْرُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ أَنْبَأَنَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ الْعَوَّامِ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَيُّ الْإِيمَانِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «الصَّبْرُ وَالسَّمَاحَةُ»  

ahmad-zuhd:55ʿAbdullāh from my father > Wakīʿ > Usāmah b. Zayd > Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū Labībah > Saʿd b. Mālik

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best provision is what is sufficient, and the best remembrance is the hidden one."  

الزهد لأحمد:٥٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَبِيبَةَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «خَيْرُ الرِّزْقِ مَا يَكْفِي وَخَيْرُ الذِّكْرِ الْخَفِيُّ»  

ahmad-zuhd:56ʿAbdullāh from my father > Wakīʿ > ʿAlī b. Ṣāliḥ > Abū al-Muhallab > ʿUbaydullāh b. Zaḥr > ʿAlī b. Yazīd > al-Qāsim > Abū Umāmah

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, meaning that Allah said, "Verily, the most beloved of my allies to me is a believing servant who is of humble status, has a share of good prayer and is devoted in worshipping his Lord, while remaining unnoticed among people; not being pointed at with fingers. His death is hastened, his inheritance is little, and his mourners are few." Abu Abdullah asked, "I asked my father, what is his inheritance?" He said, "His inheritance is."  

الزهد لأحمد:٥٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْمُهَلَّبِ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَعْنِي قَالَ اللَّهُ ﷻ «إِنَّ أَغْبَطَ أَوْلِيَائِي عِنْدِي مُؤْمِنٌ خَفِيفُ الْحَاذِ ذُو حَظٍّ مِنْ صَلَاةٍ أَحْسَنَ عِبَادَةَ رَبِّهِ وَكَانَ غَامِضًا فِي النَّاسِ؛ لَا يُشَارُ إِلَيْهِ بِالْأَصَابِعِ فَعُجِّلَتْ مَنِيَّتُهُ وَقَلَّ تُرَاثُهُ وَقَلَّتْ بَوَاكِيهِ» قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ سَأَلْتُ أَبِي مَا تُرَاثُهُ؟ قَالَ مِيرَاثُهُ  

ahmad-zuhd:57ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū Saʿīd > Sulaymān / Ibn Bilāl > ʿAmr b. Abū ʿAmr > ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah > Maḥmūd b. Labīd

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, Allah protects His believing servant from the world, while He loves him, just as you protect your sick person from food and drink for fear of harm."  

الزهد لأحمد:٥٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ بِلَالٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي عَمْرٍو عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ لَبِيدٍ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ لَيَحْمِي عَبْدَهُ الْمُؤْمِنَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَهُوَ يُحِبُّهُ كَمَا تَحْمُونَ مَرِيضَكُمُ الطَّعَامَ وَالشَّرَابَ تَخَافُونَ عَلَيْهِ»  

ahmad-zuhd:58ʿAbdullāh > Muḥammad b. al-Muthanná Abū Mūsá > Muḥammad b. Jahḍam > Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar > ʿUmārah b. Ghaziyyah > ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah > Maḥmūd b. Labīd > Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān

"When Allah loves a slave, He prevents him from the world, just as one of you prevents his sick from water." Another chain reports a similar narration. (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2036)  

الزهد لأحمد:٥٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى أَبُو مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَهْضَمٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ لَبِيدٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ إِذَا أَحَبَّ عَبْدًا حَمَاهُ الدُّنْيَا كَمَا يَظَلُّ أَحَدُكُمْ يَحْمِي سَقِيمَهُ الْمَاءَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:59ʿAbdullāh from my father > Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Qatādah > Muṭarrif from his father

I came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ as he was reciting:" Abundance diverts you" (cii. 1). He said: The son of Adam claims: My wealth, my wealth. And he (the Holy Prophet) said: O son of Adam. is there anything as your belonging except that which you consumed, which you utilised, or which you wore and then it was worn out or you gave as charity and sent it forward? (Using translation from Muslim 2958a)   

الزهد لأحمد:٥٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ» قَالَ يَقُولُ ابْنُ آدَمَ مَالِي وَمَا لَكَ مِنْ مَالِكَ إِلَّا مَا أَكَلْتَ فَأَفْنَيْتَ أَوْ لَبِسْتَ فَأَبْلَيْتَ أَوْ تَصَدَّقْتَ فَأَمْضَيْتَ  

ahmad-zuhd:60ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbdullāh b. Yazīd > Ḥaywah > Abū Hāniʾ > Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥman al-Ḥubulī > Innah > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr And Saʾalah a man > Alasnā from Fuqarāʾ al-Muhājirīn > Lah ʿAbdullāh Alak Āmraʾah Taʾwī Ilayhā > Naʿam > Alak Maskan Taskunuh > Naʿam

[Machine] "So you are not one of the needy migrants."  

الزهد لأحمد:٦٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو هَانِئٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحُبُلِيَّ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو وَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ أَلَسْنَا مِنْ فُقَرَاءِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ «أَلَكَ امْرَأَةٌ تَأْوِي إِلَيْهَا؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «أَلَكَ مَسْكَنٌ تَسْكُنُهُ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ

«فَلَسْتَ مِنْ فُقَرَاءِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:61ʿAbdullāh from my father > Sayyār b. Ḥātim > Jaʿfar > Ayyūb > ʿAbd Rabbih b. Saʿīd al-Madanī

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Uthman ibn Mazh'un while he was on his deathbed. He covered him and kissed him, saying, "May Allah have mercy on you, O Uthman. You have not suffered in this worldly life, nor has it afflicted you."  

الزهد لأحمد:٦١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَناَ أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا سَيَّارُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْمَدَنِيِّ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مَظْعُونٍ وَهُوَ فِي الْمَوْتِ فَأَكَبَّ عَلَيْهِ يُقَبِّلُهُ وَيَقُولُ «رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ يَا عُثْمَانُ مَا أَصَبْتَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَلَا أَصَابَتْ مِنْكَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:62ʿAbdullāh from my father > Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb > Sufyān b. Saʿīd > al-Zubayr b. ʿAdī > Muṣʿab b. Saʿd

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Beware of the world, for it is green and sweet."  

الزهد لأحمد:٦٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «احْذَرُوا الدُّنْيَا فَإِنَّهَا خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ»  

ahmad-zuhd:63ʿAbdullāh from my father > Yaḥyá b. Ghaylān > Rishdīn b. Saʿd > Ḥarmalah b. 14 ʿImrān al-Tujaybī > ʿUqbah b. Muslim > ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir

[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "When you see Allah giving a servant of His from the world despite his sins, it is a gradual capture. Then recite the saying of Allah: 'So when they forgot that by which they were reminded, We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were [then] in despair.' [Surah Al-Anam 6:44]."  

الزهد لأحمد:٦٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ غَيْلَانَ حَدَّثَنَا رِشْدِينُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنْ حَرْمَلَةَ بْنِ [14] عِمْرَانَ التُّجَيْبِيِّ عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَ اللَّهَ ﷻ يُعْطِي الْعَبْدَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَى مَعَاصِيهِ مَا يُحِبُّ فَإِنَّهُ اسْتِدْرَاجٌ ثُمَّ تَلَا قَوْلَ اللَّهِ ﷻ {فَلَمَّا نَسُوا مَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهِ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَبْوَابَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى إِذَا فَرِحُوا بِمَا أُوتُوا أَخَذْنَاهُمْ بَغْتَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ مُبْلِسُونَ} [الأنعام 44]  

ahmad-zuhd:64ʿAbdullāh from my father > Yazīd b. Hārūn > al-Masʿūdī > ʿAmr b. Murrah > Ibrāhīm > ʿAlqamah > ʿAbdullāh

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slept on a mat, leaving a mark on his side. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, why don't you grant us permission to spread something softer than it for you?" He replied, "What do I have to do with the world? My example and the example of the world is like a traveler who rested under a tree in the heat of the day and then left it."  

الزهد لأحمد:٦٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَنْبَأَنَا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

نَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى حَصِيرٍ أَثَّرَ فِي جَنْبِهِ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَلَا آذَنْتَنَا فَنَبْسُطَ تَحْتَكَ أَلْيَنَ مِنْهُ؟ فَقَالَ «مَا لِي وَلِلدُّنْيَا؟ إِنَّمَا مَثَلِي وَمَثَلُ الدُّنْيَا كَرَاكِبٍ سَارَ فِي يَوْمٍ صَائِفٍ فَقَالَ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ ثُمَّ رَاحَ وَتَرَكَهَا»  

ahmad-zuhd:65ʿAbdullāh > Bayān b. al-Ḥakam > Muḥammad b. Ḥātim > Bishr b. al-Ḥārith > ʿĪsá b. Yūnus > Hishām > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three things for which a servant will not be held accountable: the shade of a private area in which he seeks shade, a bone he strengthens himself with, and a garment that covers his nakedness."  

الزهد لأحمد:٦٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا بَيَانُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ حَدَّثَنِي بِشْرُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثَلَاثٌ لَا يُحَاسَبُ بِهِنَّ الْعَبْدُ ظِلُّ خُصٍّ يَسْتَظِلُّ بِهِ وَكِسْرَةٌ يَشُدُّ بِهَا صُلْبَهُ وَثَوْبٌ يُوَارِي عَوْرَتَهُ  

ahmad-zuhd:66ʿAbdullāh > Bayān b. al-Ḥakam > Muḥammad b. Ḥātim > Bishr b. al-Ḥārith > Khālid al-Wāsiṭī > Bayān > Balaghanī

[Machine] "In the Torah, it is written: 'O son of Adam, a morsel is sufficient for you, and a piece of cloth is enough to cover you, and a hole is enough to shelter you.'"  

الزهد لأحمد:٦٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا بَيَانُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ حَدَّثَنِي بِشْرُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ الْوَاسِطِيُّ عَنْ بَيَانٍ قَالَ بَلَغَنِي

أَنَّ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ مَكْتُوبًا «ابْنَ آدَمَ كِسْرَةٌ تَكْفِيكَ وَخِرْقَةٌ تُوَارِيكَ وَجُحْرٌ يُؤْوِيكَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:67ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > Sālim b. Abū al-Jaʿd

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, among my nation there are those who, if someone were to come to their door and ask for a dinar, they would not give it to him. And if he asked for a dirham, they would not give it to him. And if he asked for a penny, they would not give it to him. But if he were to ask Allah for Paradise, He would give it to him. And if he were to ask Allah for the world, He would not give it to him, and what prevents Him from giving it to him is His dislike for him. Dhul-Thimarain (the possessor of two gardens) does not care about it, even if he were to swear by Allah ﷻ that he will not break it."  

الزهد لأحمد:٦٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ مِنْ أُمَّتِي مَنْ لَوْ أَتَى بَابَ أَحَدِكُمْ فَسَأَلَهُ دِينَارًا لَمْ يُعْطِهِ إِيَّاهُ وَلَوْ سَأَلَهُ دِرْهَمًا لَمْ يُعْطِهِ إِيَّاهُ وَلَوْ سَأَلَهُ فَلْسًا لَمْ يُعْطِهِ إِيَّاهُ وَلَوْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ لَأَعْطَاهَا إِيَّاهُ وَلَوْ سَأَلَهُ الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يُعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ وَمَا يَمْنَعُهَا إِيَّاهُ لِهَوَانِهِ عَلَيْهِ؛ ذُو طِمْرَيْنِ لَا يُؤْبَهُ لَهُ لَوْ يُقْسِمُ عَلَى اللَّهِ ﷻ لَأَبَرَّهُ»  

ahmad-zuhd:68ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Mahdī > ʿAbdullāh b. al-Ashʿath b. Sawwār > Muḥārib b. Dithār

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, among my ummah (community) are those who are unable to come to their mosque or place of prayer because of their nakedness, and their faith prevents them from asking people. Among them are Uwais Al-Qarni and Furat ibn Hayyan Al-Ajli."  

الزهد لأحمد:٦٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ سَوَّارٍ عَنْ مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ مِنْ أُمَّتِي مَنْ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ مَسْجِدَهُ أَوْ مُصَلَّاهُ مِنَ الْعُرْيِ يَحْجُزُهُ إِيمَانُهُ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ النَّاسَ؛ مِنْهُمْ أُوَيْسٌ الْقَرَنِيُّ وَفُرَاتُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ الْعِجْلِيُّ»  

ahmad-zuhd:69ʿAbdullāh from my father > Muʿāwiyah b. ʿUmar > Zāʾidah > al-Aʿmash > Samiʿtuhum Yadhkurūnah > Anas

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not inform you about the people of Paradise? Every weak and oppressed person who has been wronged, if he were to swear by Allah, He would fulfill his vow."  

الزهد لأحمد:٦٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُمْ يَذْكُرُونَهُ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِأَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ؟ كُلُّ ضَعِيفٍ مُتَضَاعِفٍ ذِي طِمْرَيْنِ لَوْ يُقْسِمُ عَلَى اللَّهِ لَأَبَرَّهُ»  

ahmad-zuhd:70ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Ṣamad > Abū Hilāl > ʿUqbah b. Abū Thubayt > Abū al-Jawzāʾ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not inform you about the people of Paradise and the people of Hell? The people of Paradise are those whose ears are filled with good praise, and the people of Hell are those whose ears are filled with bad praise, and they hear it."  

الزهد لأحمد:٧٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هِلَالٍ حَدَّثَنَا عُقْبَةُ بْنُ أَبِي ثُبَيْتٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْجَوْزَاءِ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِأَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ مَنْ مُلِئَتْ مَسَامِعُهُ مِنَ الثَّنَاءِ الْحَسَنِ وَأَهْلُ النَّارِ مَنْ مُلِئَتْ مَسَامِعُهُ مِنَ الثَّنَاءِ السَّيِّئِ وَهُوَ يَسْمَعُ  

ahmad-zuhd:71ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū Saʿīd > Zāʾidah > ʿAṭāʾ from his father > ʿAlī

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , prepared Fatima, may Allah be pleased with her, a saddle, a mount, and a cushion made of leather filled with fibers.  

الزهد لأحمد:٧١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ حَدَّثَنَا عَطَاءٌ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ؓ قَالَ

«جَهَّزَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَاطِمَةَ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا فِي خَمِيلٍ وَقِرْبَةٍ وَوِسَادَةٍ مِنْ أَدَمٍ وَحَشْوُهَا لِيفٌ»  

ahmad-zuhd:72ʿAbdullāh > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar > Ḥammād b. Zayd > Hishām > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to have his bed as a patched cloak with a stuffed cushion."  

الزهد لأحمد:٧٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ

«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ فِرَاشُهُ عَبَاءَةً وَوِسَادَةً مُرَقَّعَةً حَشْوُهَا لِيفٌ»  

ahmad-zuhd:73ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Ṣamad And ʾAbū Saʿīd al-Maʿná Wāḥid > Thābit > Hilāl > ʿIkrimah > Ibn ʿAbbās > Rasūl

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon him (Umar ibn Al-Khattab) while he was on a mat that left marks on his side. Umar said, "O Prophet of Allah, if you were to take a bed that is softer than this." He (the Prophet) said, "What do I have to do with this world? My example and the example of the world is like a traveler who stops to rest under a tree for an hour during a hot day, then continues on and leaves it."  

الزهد لأحمد:٧٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْمَعْنَى وَاحِدٌ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ حَدَّثَنَا هِلَالٌ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ وَهُوَ عَلَى حَصِيرٍ قَدْ أَثَّرَ فِي جَنْبِهِ فَقَالَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ لَوِ اتَّخَذْتَ فِرَاشًا أَدْثَرَ مِنْ هَذَا فَقَالَ «مَا لِي وَلِلدُّنْيَا؟ مَا مَثَلِي وَمَثَلُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا كَرَاكِبٍ سَارَ فِي يَوْمٍ صَائِفٍ فَاسْتَظَلَّ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ سَاعَةً مِنْ نَهَارٍ ثُمَّ رَاحَ وَتَرَكَهَا»  

ahmad-zuhd:74ʿAbdullāh from my father > Ḥajjāj > Sharīk > ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr > ʿAbdullāh b. Shaddād Rafaʿ al-Ḥadīth

[Machine] "Whoever wears wool, cares for sheep, rides donkeys, and responds to the invitation of a poor man or a servant, will not be recorded with any arrogance."  

الزهد لأحمد:٧٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ رَفَعَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ

«مَنْ لَبِسَ الصُّوفَ وَاعْتَقَلَ الشَّاةَ وَرَكِبَ الْحِمَارَ وَأَجَابَ دَعْوَةَ الرَّجُلِ الدُّونِ أَوِ الْعَبْدِ لَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْكِبْرِ شَيْءٌ»  

ahmad-zuhd:75ʿAbdullāh from my father > Yazīd b. Hārūn > Hishām b. Ḥassān > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray in the courtyard of his wives, and their courtyards were covered with woolen carpets. These carpets had flags made of wool, the value of each flag was six or seven dirhams."  

الزهد لأحمد:٧٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَنْبَأَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فِي مُرُوطِ نِسَائِهِ وَكَانَ مُرُطُهُنَّ أَكْسِيَةً مِنْ صُوفٍ لَهَا أَعْلَامٌ مِنْ صُوفٍ أَثْمَانُ سِتَّةِ دَرَاهِمَ أَوْ سَبْعَةِ»  

ahmad-zuhd:76ʿAbdullāh from my father > Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad > ʿAbbād / Ibn ʿAbbād > Mujālid b. Saʿīd > al-Shaʿbī > Masrūq > ʿĀʾishah

[Machine] A woman from the Ansar entered upon me and saw the bedding of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made of thick fabric. She returned to her house and sent to me a bed made of wool filling. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me and said, "What is this?" I said, "Fulanah, the Ansari woman, entered upon me and saw your bedding, so she sent this to me." He said, "Return it." I did not return it, and I liked to have it in my house, so he said that to me three times. He ﷺ said, "O Aisha, return it, for by Allah, if I had wished to, Allah would make mountains of gold and silver run with me." So, I returned it.  

الزهد لأحمد:٧٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبَّادٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُجَالِدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ؓ قَالَتْ

دَخَلَتْ عَلَيَّ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَرَأَتْ فِرَاشَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَبَاءَةً مَثْنِيَّةً فَرَجَعَتْ إِلَى مَنْزِلِهَا فَبَعَثَتْ إِلَيَّ بِفِرَاشٍ حَشْوُهُ الصُّوفُ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَا هَذَا؟» فَقُلْتُ فُلَانَةٌ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةُ دَخَلَتْ عَلَيَّ فَرَأَتْ فِرَاشَكَ فَبَعَثَتْ إِلَيَّ بِهَذَا فَقَالَ «رُدِّيهِ» فَلَمْ أَرُدَّهُ وَأَعْجَبَنِي أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي بَيْتِي حَتَّى قَالَ لِي ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَقَالَ «يَا عَائِشَةُ رُدِّيهِ فَوَاللَّهِ لَوْ شِئْتُ لَأَجْرَى اللَّهُ مَعِيَ جِبَالَ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ» «فَرَدَدْتُهُ»  

ahmad-zuhd:77ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū ʿĀmir ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAmr > Saʿīd b. Muslim b. Bānak > ʿĀmir b. ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr > ʿAwf b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṭufayl > ʿĀʾishah

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: ‘O ‘Aishah, beware of (evil) deeds that are regarded as insignificant, for they have a pursuer from Allah. (i.e. accountability).” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4243)   

الزهد لأحمد:٧٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ بَانَكٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَامِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ حَدَّثَنِي عَوْفُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ الطُّفَيْلِ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ «يَا عَائِشَةُ إِيَّاكِ وَمُحَقَّرَاتِ الذُّنُوبِ فَإِنَّ لَهَا مِنَ اللَّهِ طَالِبًا»  

ahmad-zuhd:78ʿAbdullāh from my father > Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad Abū Ibrāhīm al-Muʿaqqib > Yūsuf b. al-Mājishūn > Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir

“I entered upon Jabir bin ‘Abdullah when he was dying, and I said: ‘Convey my Salam to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1450)   

الزهد لأحمد:٧٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ أَبُو إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُعَقِّبُ حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ الْمَاجِشُونِ أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ قَالَ

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ يَمُوتُ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ «أَقْرِئْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنِّي السَّلَامَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:79ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū Dāwud > ʿImrān > Qatādah > ʿAbd Rabbih > Abū ʿIyāḍ > ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Beware of the minor sins, for they gather upon a person until they destroy him." And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave an example of them, like a group of people who came to a plain land and the cook of the people came and the man started to bring firewood and the man kept bringing firewood until they accumulated a large amount and lit a fire and fully cooked what they threw into it.  

الزهد لأحمد:٧٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ حَدَّثَنَا عِمْرَانُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ عَنْ أَبِي عِيَاضٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحَقَّرَاتِ الذُّنُوبِ فَإِنَّهُنَّ تَجْتَمِعْنَ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ حَتَّى يُهْلِكْنَهُ» وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ ضَرَبَ لَهُنَّ مَثَلًا كَمَثَلِ قَوْمٍ نَزَلُوا أَرْضَ فَلَاةٍ فَحَضَرَ صَنِيعُ الْقَوْمِ فَجَعَلَ الرَّجُلُ يَنْطَلِقُ فَيَجِيءُ بِالْعُودِ وَالرَّجُلُ يَجِيءُ بِالْعُودِ حَتَّى جَمَعُوا سَوَادًا وَأَجَّجُوا نَارًا وَأَنْضَجُوا مَا قَذَفُوا فِيهَا  

ahmad-zuhd:80ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Mahdī > Jarīr b. Ḥāzim > al-Ḥasan > Abū Hurayrah

[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ who said, "Indeed, one of you speaks a word without realizing its consequence, and it plunges him into the Hellfire for seventy autumns."  

الزهد لأحمد:٨٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ وَمَا يَرَى أَنَّهَا تَبْلُغُ حَيْثُ بَلَغَتْ يَهْوِي بِهَا فِي النَّارِ سَبْعِينَ خَرِيفًا»  

ahmad-zuhd:81ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū Muʿāwiyah > Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAlqamah al-Laythī from his father from his grandfather ʿAlqamah > Bilāl b. al-Ḥārith al-Muzanī

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, a person may speak a word that brings about the pleasure of Allah, thinking that it will not reach the level of what it actually attains, but Allah will write His pleasure for him with that word until the day he meets Him. And indeed, a person may speak a word that brings about the anger of Allah, thinking that it will not reach the level of what it actually attains, but Allah will write His anger upon him with that word until the Day of Resurrection." Alqamah said, "How many words have been prohibited for me due to the hadith of Bilal bin Al-Harith!"  

الزهد لأحمد:٨١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ اللَّيْثِيُّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ بِلَالِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْمُزَنِيِّ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ رِضْوَانِ اللَّهِ ﷻ مَا يَظُنُّ أَنَّهَا تَبْلُغُ مَا بَلَغَتْ يَكْتُبُ اللَّهُ ﷻ لَهُ بِهَا رِضْوَانَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ يَلْقَاهُ وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ سَخَطِ اللَّهِ مَا يَظُنُّ أَنْ تَبْلُغَ مَا بَلَغَتْ يَكْتُبُ اللَّهُ بِهَا عَلَيْهِ سَخَطَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ» قَالَ فَكَانَ عَلْقَمَةُ يَقُولُ كَمْ مِنْ كَلَامٍ قَدْ مَنَعَنِيهِ حَدِيثُ بِلَالِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ  

ahmad-zuhd:82ʿAbdullāh > Abū Kurayb Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ > Ibn al-Mubārak > Yaḥyá b. Ayyūb > ʿUbaydullāh b. Zaḥr > ʿAlī b. Yazīd > al-Qāsim > Abū Umāmah

"I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What is the means to salvation?' He said: 'That you control your tongue, suffice yourself your house, and cry over your sins.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2406)   

الزهد لأحمد:٨٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا النَّجَاةُ؟ قَالَ «أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ لِسَانَكَ وَلْيَسَعْكَ بَيْتُكَ وَابْكِ مِنْ ذِكْرِ خَطِيئَتِكَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:83ʿAbdullāh > Abū Maʿmar > Abū al-Aḥwaṣ > Simāk > Jābir b. 17 Samurah

"When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed fajr, he would sit in the place where he had prayed until the sun rose." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1357)  

الزهد لأحمد:٨٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ سِمَاكٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ [17] سَمُرَةَ قَالَ

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى الْفَجْرَ قَعَدَ فِي مُصَلَّاهُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ»  

ahmad-zuhd:84ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > Sulaymān b. Maysarah > Ṭāriq b. Shihāb > Sulaymān

[Machine] "A man entered Paradise while carrying a fly, and another man entered Hellfire while carrying a fly. They were asked, 'How did this happen?' The man replied, 'I passed by a group of people who had an idol that no one was allowed to approach without bringing something to offer it. They said to one of them, 'Approach.' He replied, 'I don't have anything.' They said to him, 'Approach, even if it is just a fly.' So he approached with a fly and they let him pass. As for the other man, they said to him, 'Approach, even if it is just a fly.' He said, 'I would never approach anyone with anything except Allah ﷻ.' They killed him by severing his neck. So he entered Hellfire, and they said to the other man, 'Approach, even if it is just a fly.' He replied, 'I would never approach anyone with anything before Allah ﷻ.' They killed him by severing his neck, and he entered Paradise."  

الزهد لأحمد:٨٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ

«دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ الْجَنَّةَ فِي ذُبَابٍ وَدَخَلَ النَّارَ رَجُلٌ فِي ذُبَابٍ» قَالُوا وَكَيْفَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ مَرَّ رَجُلَانِ عَلَى قَوْمٍ لَهُمْ صَنَمٌ لَا يَجُوزُهُ أَحَدٌ حَتَّى يُقَرِّبَ لَهُ شَيْئًا فَقَالُوا لِأَحَدِهِمَا قَرِّبْ قَالَ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي شَيْءٌ فَقَالُوا لَهُ قَرِّبْ وَلَوْ ذُبَابًا فَقَرَّبَ ذُبَابًا فَخَلَّوْا سَبِيلَهُ قَالَ فَدَخَلَ النَّارَ وَقَالُوا لِلْآخَرِ قَرِّبْ وَلَوْ ذُبَابًا قَالَ مَا كُنْتُ لِأُقَرِّبَ لِأَحَدٍ شَيْئًا دُونَ اللَّهِ ﷻ قَالَ «فَضَرَبُوا عُنُقَهُ» قَالَ «فَدَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ»

[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ said, "You should perform the night prayer, even if it is only one unit (rak'ah)."

الزهد لأحمد:٨٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ مُظَفَّرُ بْنُ مُدْرِكٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ الْبُنَانِيُّ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ؓ «يَا أَنَسُ أَطَابَتْ أَنْفُسُكُمْ

أَنْ تَحْثُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ التُّرَابَ؟»  

ahmad-zuhd:87ʿAbdullāh > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī > Yazīd b. Zurayʿ > ʿUmārah b. Abū Ḥafṣah > ʿIkrimah > ʿĀʾishah

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ had two coarse, rough patches on his body. Aisha said, "O Messenger of Allah, these two patches on your clothing are coarse and rough; they weigh heavily on you. Send a message to Fulan. He has brought a garment from Sham (the Levant), therefore buy two garments from him and send them to Maysarah (a companion of the Prophet). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a message to Maysarah, who came to him and said, "The Messenger of Allah has sent me to you to sell him two garments to be sent to Maysarah." Maysarah replied, "I know, by Allah, what the Messenger of Allah wants. He wants to take away my garment or to delay my payment for them." Maysarah returned to the Messenger of Allah and informed him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He is lying. They know that I uphold their rights for the sake of Allah and fulfill their trust."  

الزهد لأحمد:٨٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ حَدَّثَنَا عُمَارَةُ بْنُ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ؓ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ بُرْدَانِ قَطَرِيَّانِ خَشِنَانِ غَلِيظَانِ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ ثَوْبَيْكَ هَذَيْنِ غَلِيظَانِ خَشِنَانِ؛ تَوَشَّحُ فِيهِمَا فَيَثْقُلَانِ عَلَيْكَ فَأَرْسِلْ إِلَى فُلَانٍ؛ فَقَدْ أَتَاهُ بَزٌّ مِنَ الشَّامِ فَاشْتَرِ مِنْهُ ثَوْبَيْنِ إِلَى مَيْسَرَةٍ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ فَأَتَاهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْكَ أَنْ تَبِيعَهُ ثَوْبَيْنِ إِلَى مَيْسَرَةٍ فَقَالَ قَدْ عَلِمْتُ وَاللَّهِ مَا يُرِيدُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ؛ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ بِثَوْبِي أَوْ يَمْطِلَنِي بِثَمَنِهِمَا فَرَجَعَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «كَذَبَ قَدْ عَلِمُوا أَنِّي أَتْقَاهُمْ لِلَّهِ وَآدَاهُمْ لِلْأَمَانَةِ»  

ahmad-zuhd:88ʿAbdullāh from my father > Wakīʿ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Tell me about the children of Israel, there is no objection; for surely, there were miracles among them." Then he began to narrate ﷺ . He said, "A group of the children of Israel went until they reached a graveyard from their graves. They said, 'If we pray two rak'ahs and ask Allah (swt) to bring forth for us a man from among those who have died so that we may ask him about death?' So they did so, and while they were in that state, a man appeared with his head emerging from a grave from among those graves with patches of dirt between his eyes as a result of prostration. He said, 'O people, what do you want from me? For indeed, I have been dead for a hundred years and I have not experienced the heat of death until now. So pray to Allah (swt) to bring me back as I was before.'"  

الزهد لأحمد:٨٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ أَخْبَرَنَا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ الْجُعْفِيُّ سَمِعَهُ مِنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَابِطٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «حَدِّثُوا عَنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ وَلَا حَرَجَ؛ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَتْ فِيهِمُ الْأَعَاجِيبُ» ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ يُحَدِّثُ ﷺ؛ قَالَ خَرَجَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ حَتَّى أَتَوْا مَقْبَرَةً لَهُمْ مِنْ مَقَابِرِهِمْ فَقَالُوا لَوْ صَلَّيْنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَدَعَوْنَا اللَّهَ ﷻ [18] أَنْ يُخْرِجَ لَنَا رَجُلًا مِمَّنْ قَدْ مَاتَ؛ نَسَأَلُهُ عَنِ الْمَوْتِ؟ قَالَ فَفَعَلُوا فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ أَطْلَعَ رَجُلٌ رَأْسَهُ مِنْ قَبْرٍ مِنْ تِلْكَ الْمَقَابِرِ خِلَاسِيٌّ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ أَثَرُ السُّجُودِ فَقَالَ يَا هَؤُلَاءِ مَا أَرَدْتُمْ إِلَيَّ؟ فَقَدْ مِتُّ مُنْذُ مِائَةِ سَنَةٍ فَمَا سَكَنَتْ عَنِّي حَرَارَةُ الْمَوْتِ حَتَّى كَانَ الْآنَ فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ ﷻ لِي يُعِيدُنِي كَمَا كُنْتُ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Increase in remembering the destroyer of pleasures."  

الزهد لأحمد:٨٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ يَعْنِي وَالِدَ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَكْثِرُوا مِنْ ذِكْرِ هَاذِمِ اللَّذَّاتِ»

[Machine] Praise a man in front of the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "How would you like him to be mentioned after death?" They said, "He is not like that." He said, "Then he is not as you say."  

الزهد لأحمد:٩٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ

أُثْنِيَ عَلَى رَجُلٍ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «كَيْفَ ذِكْرُهُ لِلْمَوْتِ؟» قَالُوا مَا هُوَ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ «مَا هُوَ إِذًا كَمَا تَقُولُونَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:91ʿAbdullāh from my father > Wakīʿ > Qudāmah al-ʿĀmirī > Jasrah b. Dajājah > Abū Dhar

If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (Using translation from Qurʾān 5:118)   

الزهد لأحمد:٩١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا قُدَامَةُ الْعَامِرِيُّ عَنْ جَسْرَةَ بِنْتِ دَجَاجَةَ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ رَدَّدَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ {إِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ} [المائدة 118]  

ahmad-zuhd:92ʿAbdullāh from my father > Wakīʿ > al-Aʿmash > Abū Ṣāliḥ

The Prophet ﷺ used to offer night prayers till his feet became swollen. Somebody said, to him," "Allah has forgiven you, your faults of the past and those to follow." On that, he said, "Shouldn't I be a thankful slave of Allah)?" (Using translation from Bukhārī 4836)   

الزهد لأحمد:٩٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُصَلِّي حَتَّى تَرِمَ قَدَمَاهُ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ قَدْ غَفَرَ لَكَ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ قَالَ «أَفَلَا أَكُونُ عَبْدًا شَكُورًا؟»  

ahmad-zuhd:93ʿAbdullāh from my father > Ibn Faḍl > al-Aʿmash > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Saʾalt

"I asked 'Aishah and Umm Salamah about which deed did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ like to do most. They said: 'Whatever he could do regularly, even if it was little.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2856)  

الزهد لأحمد:٩٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبِي أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ فَضْلٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ وَأُمَّ سَلَمَةَ ؓ مَا أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ كَانَ أَحَبَّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَتَا «مَا دَامَ وَإِنْ قَلَّ»  

ahmad-zuhd:94ʿAbdullāh > Abū Kurayb > Yaḥyá b. Ādam > Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh > Naṣr b. Abū al-Ashʿath > Shuʿbah > ʿAlī b. Zayd > Anas b. Mālik

[Machine] If the servant takes the hand of the Prophet ﷺ and walks with her in her needs, he does not return until he fulfills her need.  

الزهد لأحمد:٩٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ عَنْ نَصْرِ بْنِ أَبِي الْأَشْعَثِ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

«إِنْ كَانَتِ الْخَادِمُ لَتَأْخُذُ بِيَدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَيَمْشِي مَعَهَا فِي حَوَائِجِهَا فَلَا يَرْجِعُ حَتَّى يَقْضِيَ حَاجَتَهَا»

Once the Prophet ﷺ came while a woman was sitting with me. He said, "Who is she?" I replied, "She is so and so," and told him about her (excessive) praying. He said disapprovingly, "Do (good) deeds which is within your capacity (without being overtaxed) as Allah does not get tired (of giving rewards) but (surely) you will get tired and the best deed (act of Worship) in the sight of Allah is that which is done regularly." (Using translation from Bukhārī 43)   

الزهد لأحمد:٩٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي عَنْ عَائِشَةَ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا فُلَانَةُ لِامْرَأَةٍ فَذَكَرَتْ مِنْ صَلَاتِهَا قَالَ «مَهْ عَلَيْكُمْ بِمَا تُطِيقُونَ؛ فَوَاللَّهِ لَا يَمَلُّ اللَّهُ ﷻ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا إِنَّ أَحَبَّ الدِّينِ إِلَيْهِ مَا دَامَ عَلَيْهِ صَاحِبُهُ»  

ahmad-zuhd:96ʿAbdullāh from my father > Zayd b. Yaḥyá al-Dimashqī > Khālid b. Ṣubayḥ 19 > Yūnus b. Ḥalbas

[Machine] Abu Muslim al-Khawalani said, "Asceticism in this world is not about prohibiting what is permissible or wasting money. Rather, asceticism in this world is to rely on what Allah possesses more than what you possess. And when you face a calamity, you should have greater hope in its reward and treasure it, as if it were to remain with you."  

الزهد لأحمد:٩٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الدِّمَشْقِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ صُبَيْحٍ [19] حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَلْبَسٍ قَالَ

قَالَ أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ «لَيْسَ الزَّهَادَةُ فِي الدُّنْيَا بِتَحْرِيمِ الْحَلَالِ وَلَا إِضَاعَةِ الْمَالِ إِنَّمَا الزَّهَادَةُ فِي الدُّنْيَا أَنْ تَكُونَ بِمَا فِي يَدَيِ اللَّهِ أَوْثَقَ مِمَّا فِي يَدَيْكَ وَإِذَا أُصِبْتَ بِمُصِيبَةٍ كُنْتَ أَشَدَّ رَجَاءً لِأَجْرِهَا وَذُخْرِهَا مِنْ أَنَّهَا لَوْ بَقِيَتْ لَكَ»  

ahmad-zuhd:97ʿAbdullāh from my father > ʿAbdullāh b. Yazīd > Ḥaywah > Bakr b. ʿAmr > ʿAbdullāh b. Hubayrah > Innah > Abū Tamīm al-Jayshānī > Innah > ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb > Innah > Nabī Allāh ﷺ

Umar bin al Khattab heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿIf you were to put your trust in Allah as you should, you would be given provision like the birds: they go out hungry in the morning and come back with full bellies in the evening.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 205)  

الزهد لأحمد:٩٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ أَخْبَرَنِي بَكْرُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ هُبَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا تَمِيمٍ الْجَيْشَانِيَّ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ

سَمِعَ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ تَوَكَّلُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ حَقَّ تَوَكُّلِهِ لَرَزَقَكُمْ كَمَا يَرْزُقُ الطَّيْرَ؛ تَغْدُو خِمَاصًا وَتَرُوحُ بِطَانًا»  

ahmad-zuhd:98ʿAbdullāh from my father > Abū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Abū Hurayrah

“Look at those who are beneath you and do not look at those who are above you, for it is more suitable that you should not consider as less the blessing of Allah.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4142)  

الزهد لأحمد:٩٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «انْظُرُوا إِلَى مَنْ هُوَ أَسْفَلُ مِنْكُمْ وَلَا تَنْظُرُوا إِلَى مَنْ هُوَ فَوْقَكُمْ؛ فَإِنَّهُ أَجْدَرُ أَنْ لَا تَزْدَرُوا نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ»  

ahmad-zuhd:99ʿAbdullāh from my father > Wakīʿ > Jaʿfar b. Burqān > Yazīd al-Aṣam > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Wealth is not in having many possessions, but rather (true) wealth is feeling sufficiency in the soul." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6446)   

الزهد لأحمد:٩٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بُرْقَانَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ الْأَصَمِّ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَيْسَ الْغِنَى عَنْ كَثْرَةِ الْعَرَضِ إِنَّمَا الْغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ»  

ahmad-zuhd:100ʿAbdullāh > ʿAbbād b. Yaʿqūb > Muḥammad b. Fuḍayl > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Isḥāq > al-Nuʿmān b. Saʿd > ʿAlī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿIn Paradise there are chambers the inside of which can be seen from the outside and the outside can be seen from the inside.ʿ A Bedouin said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who are they for? He said: “For the one who speaks kind words, feeds people and prays to Allah at night when people are asleep.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1338)  

الزهد لأحمد:١٠٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي عَبَّادُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ لَغُرَفًا يُرَى بَاطِنُهَا مِنْ ظَاهِرِهَا وَظَاهِرُهَا مِنْ بَاطِنِهَا» فَقَالَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ لِمَنْ هِيَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «لِمَنْ أَطَابَ الْكَلَامَ وَأَطْعَمَ الطَّعَامَ وَأَدَامَ الصِّيَامَ وَصَلَّى لِلَّهِ ﷻ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّاسُ نِيَامٌ»
