Story of Ibrahim and Sarah in Egypt

bukhari:2217Abū al-Yamān > Shuʿayb > Abū al-Zinād > al-Aʿraj > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Prophet ﷺ Abraham emigrated with Sarah and entered a village where there was a king or a tyrant. (The king) was told that Abraham had entered (the village) accompanied by a woman who was one of the most charming women. So, the king sent for Abraham and asked, 'O Abraham! Who is this lady accompanying you?' Abraham replied, 'She is my sister (i.e. in religion).' Then Abraham returned to her and said, 'Do not contradict my statement, for I have informed them that you are my sister. By Allah, there are no true believers on this land except you and 1.' Then Abraham sent her to the king. When the king got to her, she got up and performed ablution, prayed and said, 'O Allah! If I have believed in You and Your Apostle, and have saved my private parts from everybody except my husband, then please do not let this pagan overpower me.' On that the king fell in a mood of agitation and started moving his legs. Seeing the condition of the king, Sarah said, 'O Allah! If he should die, the people will say that I have killed him.' The king regained his power, and proceeded towards her but she got up again and performed ablution, prayed and said, 'O Allah! If I have believed in You and Your Apostle and have kept my private parts safe from all except my husband, then please do not let this pagan overpower me.' The king again fell in a mood of agitation and started moving his legs. On seeing that state of the king, Sarah said, 'O Allah! If he should die, the people will say that I have killed him.' The king got either two or three attacks, and after recovering from the last attack he said, 'By Allah! You have sent a satan to me. Take her to Abraham and give her Ajar.' So she came back to Abraham and said, 'Allah humiliated the pagan and gave us a slave-girl for service."

Take her to Abraham and give her Ajar.' So she came back to Abraham and said, 'Allah humiliated the pagan and gave us a slave-girl for service." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2217)

We went out to Khaibar in the company of the Prophet. While we were proceeding at night, a man from the group said to 'Amir, "O 'Amir! Won't you let us hear your poetry?" 'Amir was a poet, so he got down and started reciting for the people poetry that kept pace with the camels' footsteps, saying:-- "O Allah! Without You we Would not have been guided On the right path Neither would be have given In charity, nor would We have prayed. So please forgive us, what we have committed (i.e. our defects); let all of us Be sacrificed for Your Cause And send Sakina (i.e. calmness) Upon us to make our feet firm When we meet our enemy, and If they will call us towards An unjust thing, We will refuse. The infidels have made a hue and Cry to ask others' help Against us." The Prophet ﷺ on that, asked, "Who is that (camel) driver (reciting poetry)?" The people said, "He is 'Amir bin Al-Akwaʿ." Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on him." A man amongst the people said, "O Allah's Prophet! has (martyrdom) been granted to him. Would that you let us enjoy his company longer." Then we reached and besieged Khaibar till we were afflicted with severe hunger. Then Allah helped the Muslims conquer it (i.e. Khaibar). In the evening of the day of the conquest of the city, the Muslims made huge fires. The Prophet ﷺ said, "What are these fires? For cooking what, are you making the fire?" The people replied, "(For cooking) meat." He asked, "What kind of meat?" They (i.e. people) said, "The meat of donkeys." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Throw away the meat and break the pots!" Some man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall we throw away the meat and wash the pots instead?" He said, "(Yes, you can do) that too." So when the army files were arranged in rows (for the clash), 'Amir's sword was short and he aimed at the leg of a Jew to strike it, but the sharp blade of the sword returned to him and injured his own knee, and that caused him to die. When they returned from the battle, Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me (in a sad mood). He took my hand and said, "What is bothering you?" I replied, "Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you! The people say that the deeds of 'Amir are lost." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever says so, is mistaken, for 'Amir has got a double reward." The Prophet raised two fingers and added, "He (i.e. Amir) was a persevering struggler in the Cause of Allah and there are few 'Arabs who achieved the like of (good deeds) 'Amir had done."

The people claim that all the deeds of Amir have been annulled." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Who said so?" I replied, "So-and-so and soand- so and Usaid bin Al-Hudair Al-Ansari said, 'Whoever says so is telling a lie. Verily, 'Amir will have double reward."' (While speaking) the Prophet ﷺ put two of his fingers together to indicate that, and added, "He was really a hard-working man and a Mujahid (devout fighter in Allah's Cause) and rarely have there lived in it (i.e., Medina or the battle-field) an "Arab like him."

[Machine] Aamir was a poet who descended saying,

"Allah, if it weren't for You, we wouldn't have been guided,

nor would we have been charitable or prayed,

so forgive us for what we have done,

and keep us steadfast if we encounter hardship.

Bestow tranquility upon us when we are in distress.

Indeed, when we are called, we respond,

and through the calling, our calamities are lifted."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Who said this?"

They replied, "Ibn Al-Akwa."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on him."

Then a man said, "You have done us a great favor, O Messenger of Allah."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "He will be rewarded twice for it."

Then a man struck a Jew from Bani Il with a whip,

and the tip of the sword hit his knee, causing a fly to fall into his eye.

People said, "His work was in vain, so he killed himself."

The man said, "I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after he arrived in Madinah, and he was in the masjid. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, they claim that Aamir's work was in vain.' He asked, 'Who says that?' I said, 'Some of the Ansar, including so and so.' He said, 'Whoever says that is lying. He will be rewarded twice for it. Allah sent (the Prophet) Muhammad and said:-- 'Say, No wage do I ask of you for this (Qur'an) nor am I one of the pretenders (i.e. a person who pretends things which do not exist). (38.68) When Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw Quraish standing against him, he said, "O Allah! Help me against them by afflicting them with seven years of famine similar to the seven years (of famine) of Joseph. So they were afflicted with a year of drought that destroyed everything, and they ate bones and hides. (One of them said), "And they ate hides and dead animals, and (it seemed to them that) something like smoke was coming out of the earth. So Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Muhammad! Your people are on the verge of destruction! Please invoke Allah to relieve them." So the Prophet ﷺ invoked Allah for them (and the famine disappeared). He said to them. "You will revert (to heathenism) after that." ʿAbdullah then recited: 'Then watch you for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke plainly visible.......but truly you will revert (to disbelief).' He added, "Will the punishment be removed from them in the Hereafter? The smoke and the grasp and the Al-Lizam have all passed." One of the sub-narrater said, "The splitting of the moon." And another said, "The defeat of the Romans (has passed).

So, a drought befell them and everything was affected to the extent that they consumed animal hides and bones. One of them said they even resorted to eating dead animals. He described it as smoke coming out of a man. Abu Sufyan then came to him and said: O Muhammad, your people have been perished, so pray to Allah Almighty to alleviate their suffering. He supplicated and said: O Allah, if they return, then make the drought return with them, and this is mentioned in the narration of Mansur (narrator). Then he recited the verse: 'Then watch out for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke.' (Ad-Dukhan 10)."

[Machine] Indeed, when the Quraysh became stubborn against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "O Allah, assist me with seven like the aid of Prophet Yusuf." So, they were afflicted with a year of famine during which everything was rationed, and they had to eat the hides and carrion. Another narration says they had to eat the hides and bones. Then, the famine became so severe that it seemed like smoke rising from the ground. Abu Sufyan came and said, "Indeed, your people have been destroyed, so pray to Allah for them." He responded, "If they repent, we will count their number." This is in reference to the verse, {The Day the heaven will bring forth a visible smoke, covering the people, this is a painful torment} [Ad-Dukhan 11]. Abdullah asked, "Will the punishment of the Hereafter be revealed?" Then, Abdullah said, "Indeed, the smoke has passed."

(Using translation from Bukhārī 4824)

The Prophet ﷺ said, "An Israeli man asked another Israeli to lend him one thousand Dinars. The second man required witnesses. The former replied, 'Allah is sufficient as a witness.' The second said, 'I want a surety.' The former replied, 'Allah is sufficient as a surety.' The second said, 'You are right,' and lent him the money for a certain period. The debtor went across the sea. When he finished his job, he searched for a conveyance so that he might reach in time for the repayment of the debt, but he could not find any. So, he took a piece of wood and made a hole in it, inserted in it one thousand Dinars and a letter to the lender and then closed (i.e. sealed) the hole tightly. He took the piece of wood to the sea and said. 'O Allah! You know well that I took a loan of one thousand Dinars from so-and-so. He demanded a surety from me but I told him that Allah's Guarantee was sufficient and he accepted Your guarantee. He then asked for a witness and I told him that Allah was sufficient as a Witness, and he accepted You as a Witness. No doubt, I tried hard to find a conveyance so that I could pay his money but could not find, so I hand over this money to You.' Saying that, he threw the piece of wood into the sea till it went out far into it, and then he went away. Meanwhile he started searching for a conveyance in order to reach the creditor's country. One day the lender came out of his house to see whether a ship had arrived bringing his money, and all of a sudden he saw the piece of wood in which his money had been deposited. He took it home to use for fire. When he sawed it, he found his money and the letter inside it. Shortly after that, the debtor came bringing one thousand Dinars to him and said, 'By Allah, I had been trying hard to get a boat so that I could bring you your money, but failed to get one before the one I have come by.' The lender asked, 'Have you sent something to me?' The debtor replied, 'I have told you I could not get a boat other than the one I have come by.' The lender said, 'Allah has delivered on your behalf the money you sent in the piece of wood. So, you may keep your one thousand Dinars and depart guided on the right path.' "

I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day (of the battle) of the Trench carrying earth till the hair of his chest were covered with dust and he was a hairy man. He was reciting the following verses of ʿAbdullah (bin Rawaha): "O Allah, were it not for You, We would not have been guided, Nor would we have given in charity, nor prayed. So, bestow on us calmness, and when we meet the enemy. Then make our feet firm, for indeed, Yet if they want to put us in affliction, (i.e. want to fight against us) we would not (flee but withstand them)." The Prophet ﷺ used to raise his voice while reciting these verses. (See Hadith No. 432, Vol. 5).

When it was the day of Al-Ahzab (i.e. the clans) and Messenger of Allah ﷺ dug the trench, I saw him carrying earth out of the trench till dust made the skin of his ʿAbdomen out of my sight and he was a hairy man. I heard him reciting the poetic verses composed by Ibn Rawaha while he was carrying the earth, "O Allah! Without You we would not have been guided, nor would we have given in charity, nor would we have prayed. So, (O Allah), please send Sakina (i.e. calmness) upon us and make our feet firm if we meet the enemy, as they have rebelled against us. And if they intend affliction (i.e. want to frighten us, and fight against us) then we would not (flee but withstand them)." The Prophet ﷺ would then prolong his voice at the last words.

I went to Sham and offered a two-rakʿat prayer and then said, "O Allah! Bless me with a good pious companion." So I went to some people and sat with them. An old man came and sat by my side. I replied, "From the people of Al-Kufa." He said, "Isn't there amongst you Ibn Um ʿAbd, the one who used to carry the shoes, the cushion(or pillow) and the water for ablution? Is there amongst you the one whom Allah gave Refuge from Satan through the request of His Prophet. Is there amongst you the one who keeps the secrets of the Prophet ﷺ which nobody knows except him?" Abu Darda further asked, "How does ʿAbdullah (bin Masʿud) recite the Sura starting with, 'By the Night as it conceals (the light)." (92.1) Then I recited before him: 'By the Night as it envelops: And by the Day as it appears in brightness; And by male and female.' [Machine] Alqamah Al-Shami came and prayed two units of prayer. He said, "O Allah, grant me a righteous companion." So, I sat next to a man and he turned out to be Abu Al-Darda. He asked me, "Who are you?" I said, "I am from the people of Kufa." He asked, "Do you know how Abdullah used to recite this verse?" [By the night when it covers, and by the day when it appears, and by He who created the male and female.] So, I said, "He used to recite it as: 'By the night when it covers, and by the day when it appears, and by the male and female.'" He said, "That is how I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite it." He continued to question me until I began to doubt myself. Then, he said, "Isn't among you the one who uses the cushion and the tooth stick?" He meant Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. "Isn't among you the one whom Allah protected from the tongue of his Prophet from the Devil?" He meant Ammar ibn Yasar. "Isn't among you the one who knows the secret that no one else knows?" He meant Hudhayfah.

I said, 'Verily, I prayed to Allah to facilitate for me a righteous companion, and He facilitated for me.' He asked, 'Where are you from?' I said, 'From the people of Kufa.' He said, 'Do you not have with you the son of Umm Abdu, the companion of the two sandals, the pillow, and the pitcher, and among you the one whom Allah protected from Satan on the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ , and among you is the companion of the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that no one else knows?'"

[Machine] I heard Ibrahim say that Alqamah went to Damascus. He came to the mosque and prayed two units of prayer, then said, "O Allah, grant me a righteous companion." He sat next to Abu Darda and asked, "Who are you?" Abu Darda said, "I am from the people of Kufa." Alqamah asked, "Do you not have the companion of the secret who no one else knew except Hudhaifah?" Alqamah continued, "Do you not have the one whom Allah entrusted with protection from the devil through the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ , Ammar ibn Yasir?" And do you not have the companion of the blackness, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud?" Then Alqamah asked, "How do you read this verse, 'And [by] the night when it covers and [by] the day when it appears'?" Abu Darda replied, "I said, 'And [by] the male and female.' He said, 'These people continued to doubt me, even though I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .'"

Al-Muhajirun (i.e. the Emigrants) and the Ansar were digging the trench around Medina and were carrying the earth on their backs while saying, "We are those who have given the pledge of allegiance to Muhammad for Islam as long as we live." The Prophet ﷺ said in reply to their saying, "O Allah! There is no goodness except the goodness of the Hereafter; so please grant Your Blessing to the Ansar and the Emigrants." The people used to bring a handful of barley, and a meal used to be prepared thereof by cooking it with a cooking material (i.e. oil, fat and butter having a change in color and smell) and it used to be presented to the people (i.e. workers) who were hungry, and it used to stick to their throats and had a nasty smell.

[Machine] I saw the immigrants and the supporters digging the trench around the city and carrying the soil on their backs. They would say [Surah Al-Bahr Al-Rajz]: "We are those who pledged allegiance to Muhammad on Islam, and we will never forsake it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would respond to them, saying, 'O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter, so bless the supporters and the immigrants.' Then a plate would be brought containing a handful of barley grains that were roasted and prepared with unsalted fat. It would be placed in front of the people while they were starving. It had a horrible taste and a strong smell."
