The Emigrants and the Ansar started digging the trench around Medina carrying the earth on their backs and saying, "We are those who have given a pledge of allegiance to Muhammad that we will I carry on Jihad as long as we live." The Prophet ﷺ kept on replying, "O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter; so confer Your Blessings on the Ansar and the Emigrants." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2835)

Al-Muhajirun (i.e. the Emigrants) and the Ansar were digging the trench around Medina and were carrying the earth on their backs while saying, "We are those who have given the pledge of allegiance to Muhammad for Islam as long as we live." The Prophet ﷺ said in reply to their saying, "O Allah! There is no goodness except the goodness of the Hereafter; so please grant Your Blessing to the Ansar and the Emigrants." The people used to bring a handful of barley, and a meal used to be prepared thereof by cooking it with a cooking material (i.e. oil, fat and butter having a change in color and smell) and it used to be presented to the people (i.e. workers) who were hungry, and it used to stick to their throats and had a nasty smell. The People of Kufa complained against Saʿd to ʿUmar and the latter dismissed him and appointed ʿAmmar as their chief . They lodged many complaints against Saʿd and even they alleged that he did not pray properly. ʿUmar sent for him and said, "O Aba 'Is-haq! These people claim that you do not pray properly." Abu 'Is-haq said, "By Allah, I used to pray with them a prayer similar to that of Allah's Apostle and I never reduced anything of it. I used to prolong the first two rakʿat of ʿIsha prayer and shorten the last two rakʿat." ʿUmar said, "O Aba 'Is-haq, this was what I thought about you." And then he sent one or more persons with him to Kufa so as to ask the people about him. So they went there and did not leave any mosque without asking about him. All the people praised him till they came to the mosque of the tribe of Bani ʿAbs; one of the men called Usama bin Qatada with a surname of Aba Saʿda stood up and said, "As you have put us under an oath; I am bound to tell you that Saʿd never went himself with the army and never distributed (the war booty) equally and never did justice in legal verdicts." (On hearing it) Saʿd said, "I pray to Allah for three things: O Allah! If this slave of yours is a liar and got up for showing off, give him a long life, increase his poverty and put him to trials." (And so it happened). Later on when that person was asked how he was, he used to reply that he was an old man in trial as the result of Saʿd's curse. ʿAbdul Malik, the sub narrator, said that he had seen him afterwards and his eyebrows were overhanging his eyes owing to old age and he used to tease and assault the small girls in the way.

[Machine] My covenant with him is that he is a good prayer, so he called him and informed him. He said, "As for the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I have prayed with him by bowing in the first two units and omitting it in the last two units." That was your assumption, Abu Ishaq. So he sent someone with him to ask about him in Kufa. He roamed around in the mosques of Kufa and no one said anything about him except good until he reached the mosque of Bani Abis and there he found a man named Abu Sa'dah. He said, "O Allah, he was not a coward in secret missions, he never swore by equal measures, and he never compromised in judgment." Sa'd became angry and said, "O Allah, if he is lying, then prolong his life, increase his poverty, and afflict him with tribulations." Ibn Umayr claimed to have seen him with his eyebrows fallen over his eyes, impoverished and afflicted. He couldn't find anyone to ask, "How are you, Abu Sa'dah?" A venerable old man, afflicted, answered, "I have been responded to in the supplication of Sa'd."

The Prophet ﷺ replied, "A person in debt tells lies whenever he speaks, and breaks promises whenever he makes (them)." ʿAisha also narrated: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his prayer seeking refuge with Allah from the afflictions of Ad-Dajjal.

Would that one day I could Drink the water of the Majanna, and Would that (The two mountains) Shama and Tafil would appear to me!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah! Curse Shaiba bin Rabiʿa and ʿUtba bin Rabiʿa and Umaiya bin Khalaf as they turned us out of our land to the land of epidemics." Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "O Allah! Make us love Medina as we love Mecca or even more than that. O Allah! Give blessings in our Sa and our Mudd (measures symbolizing food) and make the climate of Medina suitable for us, and divert its fever towards Aljuhfa." Aisha added: When we reached Medina, it was the most unhealthy of Allah's lands, and the valley of Bathan (the valley of Medina) used to flow with impure colored water.

Whenever Abu Bakr's fever got worse, he would say, "Every man will meet his death once in one morning while he will be among his family, for death is really nearer to him than his leather shoe laces (to his feet)." And whenever fever deserted Bilal, he would say aloud, "Would that I know whether I shall spend a night in the valley (of Mecca) with Idhkhir and Jalil (i.e. kinds of grass) around me, and whether I shall drink one day the water of Mijannah, and whether I shall see once again the hills of Shamah and Tafil?" Then I went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him of that. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ emigrated to Medina, Abu Bakr and Bilal had a fever. I entered upon them and said, "O my father! How are you? O Bilal! How are you?" Whenever Abu Bakr got the fever he used to say, "Everybody is staying alive with his people, yet death is nearer to him than his shoe laces." And when fever deserted Bilal, he would recite (two poetic verses): "Would that I could stay overnight in a valley wherein I would be surrounded by Idhkhir and Jalil (two kinds of good smelling grass). Would that one day I could drink of the water of Majinna, and would that Shama and Tafil (two mountains at Mecca) would appear to me!" I went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him about that. He said, "O Allah! Make us love Medina as much or more than we love Mecca, and make it healthy, and bless its Sa and its Mudd, and take away its fever and put it in Al-Juhfa." (See Hadith No 558) .

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina and it was mentioned that fever had affected them. Abu Bakr fell ill and whenever he was affected by fever, he would say, "Every person is awakening among his family, and death is closer than the straps of his sandals." Bilal, when afflicted with fever, would say, "Oh, would that my hair were made into a pillow for me to spend a night in a valley with abundant water, and would there be a wound that appears on me and heals!" O Allah, curse Utabah bin Rabee'ah, Shaybah bin Rabee'ah, and Umayyah bin Khalf as they expelled us from Makkah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw what they went through, he said, "O Allah, make us love Medina as much as we love Makkah, or even more. O Allah, bless us in its measuring utensil (i.e., food), its length, and extend its boundaries. And transfer its fever to Ju'fah." Consequently, newborns began to be born in Ju'fah and they would not experience sleep until fever afflicted them.

Aisha, the Prophet's wife, sought his permission to visit them, and he allowed her. She asked 'Amir, and he replied [with a verse from Al-Bahr al-Rajz], "I found death before experiencing its taste. The coward's death is coming upon him from above." She then asked Bilal, and he said [with a verse from Al-Bahr al-Tawil], "I wish my hair would shelter me for a night when there is bounty all around me." Aisha then informed the Prophet ﷺ of their words, and he looked at the sky and said, "O Allah, make Medina beloved to us as You made Mecca beloved to us. And O Allah, make it more abundant in blessings and prosperity for us. And let its epidemic be transferred to Al-Mahya'ah, which is Al-Juhfah, as they claim."

We were with ʿAbdullah and he said, "When the Prophet ﷺ saw the refusal of the people to accept Islam he said, "O Allah! Send (famine) years on them for (seven years) like the seven years (of famine during the time) of (Prophet) Joseph." So famine overtook them for one year and destroyed every kind of life to such an extent that the people started eating hides, carcasses and rotten dead animals. Whenever one of them looked towards the sky, he would (imagine himself to) see smoke because of hunger. So Abu Sufyan went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Muhammad! You order people to obey Allah and to keep good relations with kith and kin. No doubt the people of your tribe are dying, so please pray to Allah for them." So Allah revealed: "Then watch you For the day that The sky will bring forth a kind Of smoke Plainly visible ... Verily! You will return (to disbelief) On the day when We shall seize You with a mighty grasp. One day I went to Ibn Masʿud who said, "When Quraish delayed in embracing Islam, the Prophet ﷺ I invoked Allah to curse them, so they were afflicted with a (famine) year because of which many of them died and they ate the carcasses and Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Muhammad! You came to order people to keep good relation with kith and kin and your nation is being destroyed, so invoke Allah I ? So the Prophet ﷺ I recited the Holy verses of Sirat-Ad-Dukhan: 'Then watch you For the day that The sky will Bring forth a kind Of smoke Plainly visible.' (44.10) When the famine was taken off, the people renegade once again as nonbelievers. The statement of Allah, (in Sura "Ad- Dukhan"-44) refers to that: 'On the day when We shall seize You with a mighty grasp.' (44.16) And that was what happened on the day of the battle of Badr." Asbath added on the authority of Mansur, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for them and it rained heavily for seven days. So the people complained of the excessive rain. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'O Allah! (Let it rain) around us and not on us.' So the clouds dispersed over his head and it rained over the surroundings."
