10. Ādhān (Call to Prayer) (1/6)

10.1 How the Adhan for Salat (Prayer) was started

[Machine] "And His statement, exalted be He: 'And when you call to prayer, they take it in ridicule and amusement.' That is because they are a people who do not understand. And His statement: 'When the call to prayer is made on the day of Jumu'ah (Friday).' "

bukhari:603ʿImrān b. Maysarah > ʿAbd al-Wārith > Khālid al-Ḥadhhāʾ > Abū Qilābah > Anas > Dhakarūā al-Nār And al-Nnāqūs Fadhakarūā al-Yahūd Wa-al-Nnaṣārá Faʾumir Bilāl > Yashfaʿ al-Adhān

The people mentioned the fire and the bell (they suggested those as signals to indicate the starting of prayers), and by that they mentioned the Jews and the Christians. Then Bilal was ordered to pronounce Adhan for the prayer by saying its wordings twice, and for the Iqama (the call for the actual standing for the prayers in rows) by saying its wordings once. (Iqama is pronounced when the people are ready for the prayer).

bukhari:604Maḥmūd b. Ghaylān > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Ibn Jurayj > Nāfiʿ

When the Muslims arrived at Medina, they used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time for it. During those days, the practice of Adhan for the prayers had not been introduced yet. Once they discussed this problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people suggested the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a trumpet like the horn used by the Jews, but ʿUmar was the first to suggest that a man should call (the people) for the prayer; so Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Bilal to get up and pronounce the Adhan for prayers.

bukhari:605Sulaymān b. Ḥarb > Ḥammād b. Zayd > Simāk b. ʿAṭiyyah > Ayyūb > Abū Qilābah > Anas > Umir Bilāl > Yashfaʿ al-Adhān

Bilal was ordered to repeat the wording of the Adhan for prayers twice, and to pronounce the wording of the Iqama once except "Qad-qamat-is-salat".

bukhari:606Muḥammad > ʿAbd al-Wahhāb > Khālid al-Ḥadhhāʾ > Abū Qilābah > Anas b. Mālik > Lammā Kathur al-Nās > Dhakarūā > Yaʿlamūā And Qt al-Ṣalāh Bishaʾ Yaʿrifūnah Fadhakarūā > Yūrūā Nār or Yaḍribūā Nāqūs Faʾumir Bilāl > Yashfaʿ al-Adhān

When the number of Muslims increased they discussed the question as to how to know the time for the prayer by some familiar means. Some suggested that a fire be lit (at the time of the prayer) and others put forward the proposal to ring the bell. Bilal was ordered to pronounce the wording of Adhan twice and of the Iqama once only.

bukhari:607ʿAlī b. ʿAbdullāh > Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm > Khālid > Abū Qilābah > Anas > Umir Bilāl > Yashfaʿ al-Adhān > Yūtir al-Iqāmah > Ismāʿīl Fadhakart Lʾayyūb

Anas said, "Bilal was ordered to pronounce the wording of Adhan twice and of Iqama once only." The sub narrator Ismaʿil said, "I mentioned that to Aiyub and he added (to that), "Except Iqama (i.e. Qadqamat- is-salat which should be said twice).

bukhari:608ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Abū al-Zinād > al-Aʿraj > Abū Hurayrah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the Adhan is pronounced Satan takes to his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhan. When the Adhan is completed he comes back and again takes to his heels when the Iqama is pronounced and after its completion he returns again till he whispers into the heart of the person (to divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that causes him to forget how much he has prayed."

bukhari:609ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū Ṣaʿṣaʿah al-Anṣārī Thum al-Māzinī from his father > Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī

Abu Saʿid Al-Khudri told my father, "I see you liking sheep and the wilderness. So whenever you are with your sheep or in the wilderness and you want to pronounce Adhan for the prayer raise your voice in doing so, for whoever hears the Adhan, whether a human being, a jinn or any other creature, will be a witness for you on the Day of Resurrection." Abu Saʿid added, "I heard it (this narration) from Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

bukhari:610Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar > Ḥumayd > Anas b. Mālik

Anas bin Malik said, "Whenever the Prophet ﷺ went out with us to fight (in Allah's cause) against any nation, he never allowed us to attack till morning and he would wait and see: if he heard Adhan he would postpone the attack and if he did not hear Adhan he would attack them." Anas added, "We reached Khaibar at night and in the morning when he did not hear the Adhan for the prayer, he (the Prophet ) rode and I rode behind Abi Talha and my foot was touching that of the Prophet. The inhabitants of Khaibar came out with their baskets and spades and when they saw the Prophet ﷺ they shouted 'Muhammad! By Allah, Muhammad and his army.' When Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw them, he said, "Allahu-Akbar! Allahu-Akbar! Khaibar is ruined. Whenever we approach a (hostile) nation (to fight), then evil will be the morning of those who have been warned."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If the people knew the reward for pronouncing the Adhan and for standing in the first row (in congregational prayers) and found no other way to get that except by drawing lots they would draw lots, and if they knew the reward of the Zuhr prayer (in the early moments of its stated time) they would race for it (go early) and if they knew the reward of ʿIsha' and Fajr (morning) prayers in congregation, they would come to offer them even if they had to crawl."

10.10 Talking during the Adhan

[Machine] "Sulaiman bin Surad spoke in his adhan. Hassan said, 'There is no harm in laughing while giving the adhan or iqamah.'"

bukhari:616Musaddad > Ḥammād > Ayyūb And ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd Ṣāḥib al-Ziyādī Waʿāṣim al-Aḥwal > ʿAbdullāh b. al-Ḥārith

Once on a rainy muddy day, Ibn ʿAbbas delivered a sermon in our presence and when the Mu'adhdhin pronounced the Adhan and said, "Haiyi ʿala-s-sala(t) (come for the prayer)" Ibn ʿAbbas ordered him to say 'Pray at your homes.' The people began to look at each other (surprisingly). Ibn ʿAbbas said. "It was done by one who was much better than I (i.e. the Prophet ﷺ or his Mu'adh-dhin), and it is a license.'

bukhari:617ʿAbdullāh b. Maslamah > Mālik > Ibn Shihāb > Sālim b. ʿAbdullāh from his father

My father said that Allah s Apostle said, "Bilal pronounces 'Adhan at night, so keep on eating and drinking (Suhur) till Ibn Um Maktum pronounces Adhan." Salim added, "He was a blind man who would not pronounce the Adhan unless he was told that the day had dawned."

bukhari:618ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Nāfiʿ > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar > Ḥafṣah

When the Mu'adh-dhin pronounced the Adhan for Fajr prayer and the dawn became evident the Prophet ordered a two rakʿat light prayer (Sunna) before the Iqama of the compulsory (congregational) prayer.

bukhari:619Abū Nuʿaym > Shaybān > Yaḥyá > Abū Salamah

The Prophet ﷺ used to offer two light rakʿat between the Adhan and the Iqama of the Fajr prayer.

bukhari:620ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Bilal pronounces the Adhan at night, so keep on eating and drinking (Suhur) till Ibn Um Maktum pronounces the Adhan."

bukhari:621Aḥmad b. Yūnus > Zuhayr > Sulaymān al-Taymī > Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī > ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Adhan pronounced by Bilal should not stop you from taking Suhur, for he pronounces the Adhan at night, so that the one offering the late night prayer (Tahajjud) from among you might hurry up and the sleeping from among you might wake up. It does not mean that dawn or morning has started." Then he (the Prophet) pointed with his fingers and raised them up (towards the sky) and then lowered them (towards the earth) like this (Ibn Masʿud imitated the gesture of the Prophet). Az-Zuhri gestured with his two index fingers which he put on each other and then stretched them to the right and left. These gestures illustrate the way real dawn appears. It spreads left and right horizontally. The dawn that appears in the high sky and lowers down is not the real dawn) .

On the day of Al-Khandaq (the trench), ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Allah, I could not pray (the ʿAsr) till the sun had set." ʿUmar told this to the Prophet at the time when a fasting person had done Iftar (taken his meals). The Prophet ﷺ then went to Buthan and I was with him. He performed ablution and offered the ʿAsr prayer after the sun had set and then the Maghrib prayer.

bukhari:647Mūsá b. Ismāʿīl > ʿAbd al-Wāḥid > al-Aʿmash > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Abū Hurayrah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The reward of the prayer offered by a person in congregation is twenty five times greater than that of the prayer offered in one's house or in the market (alone). And this is because if he performs ablution and does it perfectly and then proceeds to the mosque with the sole intention of praying, then for every step he takes towards the mosque, he is upgraded one degree in reward and his one sin is taken off (crossed out) from his accounts (of deeds). When he offers his prayer, the angels keep on asking Allah's Blessings and Allah's forgiveness for him as long as he is (staying) at his Musalla. They say, 'O Allah! Bestow Your blessings upon him, be Merciful and kind to him.' And one is regarded in prayer as long as one is waiting for the prayer."
