42. Medicine (1/3)
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5645)
42.2 [Machine] The example of the believer
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The example of a believer is like that of a plant that is affected by the wind at times and stands upright at other times. The example of a disbeliever is like that of a cedar tree that remains unaffected until it is cut down."
42.3 [Machine] The proverb of the disbeliever
The Similitude of a believer is that of (a standing) crop which the air continues to toss from one side to another; in the same way a believer always (receives the strokes) of misfortune. The similitude of a hypocrite is that of a cypress tree which does not move until it is uprooted. (Using translation from Muslim 2809a)
42.4 [Machine] Which people suffer the most trials?
“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, which people are most severely tested?’ He said: ‘The Prophets, then the next best and the next best. A person is tested according to his religious commitment. If he is steadfast in his religious commitment, he will be tested more severely, and if he is frail in his religious commitment, his test will be according to his commitment. Trials will continue to afflict a person until they leave him walking on the earth with no sin on him.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4023)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was afflicted with a severe fever, so he ordered for a bucket to be hung on a tree, and then he lay down beneath it. It began to drip on his chest, and he said, "The most severely tested among people are the prophets, then those who are most like them, and the ones who are most like them."
42.5 [Machine] The severity of the illness.
I visited Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was suffering from a high fever. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You have a high fever." He said, "Yes, I have as much fever as two men of you." I said, "Is it because you will have a double reward?" He said, "Yes, it is so. No Muslim is afflicted with any harm, even if it were the prick of a thorn, but that Allah expiates his sins because of that, as a tree sheds its leaves." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5648)
"I have not seen ailment effecting anyone worse than upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2397)
42.6 [Machine] The expiation of the sick.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There is no trouble that comes to a believer except that it obliterates from his sins, even if it is the pricking of a thorn (Using translation from Muslim 2572e)
A believer does not undergo (the trouble) of running a thorn or more than that when Allah effaces his sins. (Using translation from Muslim 2572c)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, harm, or distress befalls a believer, even if it be the prick he receives from a thorn, except that Allah expiates some of his sins thereby."
A believer does not receive (the trouble) of running a thorn or more than that but Allah elevates him in rank or effaces his sins because of that. (Using translation from Muslim 2572b)
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, what do we have regarding these illnesses?" He said, "Expiations (for sins)." He said, "Even if they are few?" He said, "Even if it is just a thorn."
42.7 [Machine] The reward of one who is martyred
Ibn Abbas said to me: May I show you a woman of Paradise? I said: Yes. He said: Here is this dark-complexioned woman. She came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ and said: I am suffering from falling sickness and I become naked; supplicate Allah for me, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Show endurance as you can do and there would be Paradise for you and, if you desire, I supplicate Allah that He may cure you. She said: I am prepared to show endurance (but the unbearable trouble is) that I become naked, so supplicate Allah that He should not let me become naked, so he supplicated for her. (Using translation from Muslim 2576)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a Bedouin: "Has Umm Mildam harmed you?" The Bedouin asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Umm Mildam?" He replied, "It is a type of heat that occurs between the skin and the blood." The Bedouin said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have never experienced this." The Prophet ﷺ then asked, "Have you ever experienced a headache?" The Bedouin asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is a headache?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is when veins strike a person in his head." The Bedouin said, "I have never experienced this either." When he was leaving, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wishes to see a man from the people of Hell, let him look at this (Bedouin)."
42.8 [Machine] Ordering a doctor's visit
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Free the captives, feed the hungry and pay a visit to the sick." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3046)
The Prophet ﷺ ordered us to do seven (things) and forbade us from seven. He ordered us to visit the patients, to follow the funeral procession, to reply to the sneezer (i.e., say to him, 'Yarhamuka-l-lah (May Allah bestow His Mercy upon you), if he says 'Al-hamduli l-lah' (Praise be to Allah), to help others to fulfill their oaths, to help the oppressed, to greet (whomever one should meet), and to accept the invitation (to a wedding banquet). He forbade us to wear golden rings, to use silver utensils, to use Maiyathir (cushions of silk stuffed with cotton and placed under the rider on the saddle), the Qasiyya (linen clothes containing silk brought from an Egyptian town), the Istibraq (thick silk) and the Dibaj (another kind of silk). (See Hadith No. 539 and 753). (Using translation from Bukhārī 5175)
42.9 [Machine] The reward of whoever visits a sick person.
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever comes to his Muslim brother and visits him (when he is sick), he is walking among the harvest of Paradise until he sits down, and when he sits down he is covered with mercy. If it is morning, seventy thousand angels will send blessing upon him until evening, and if it is evening, seventy thousand angels will send blessing upon him until morning.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1442)
42.10 [Machine] Women's and Men's Clinic
When Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina, Abu Bakr and Bilal got fever, and I went to both of them and said, "O my father, how do you feel? O Bilal, how do you feel?" Whenever Abu Bakr's fever got worse, he would say, "Every man will meet his death once in one morning while he will be among his family, for death is really nearer to him than his leather shoe laces (to his feet)." And whenever fever deserted Bilal, he would say aloud, "Would that I know whether I shall spend a night in the valley (of Mecca) with Idhkhir and Jalil (i.e. kinds of grass) around me, and whether I shall drink one day the water of Mijannah, and whether I shall see once again the hills of Shamah and Tafil?" Then I went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him of that. He said, "O Allah, make us love Medina as much as or more than we used to love Mecca, O Allah, make it healthy and bless its Sa' and Mud (i.e. measures), and take away its fever to Al-Juhfa." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3926)

The Prophet ﷺ rode a donkey having a saddle with a Fadakiyya velvet covering. He mounted me behind him and went to visit Saʿd bin 'Ubada, and that had been before the battle of Badr. The Prophet ﷺ proceeded till he passed by a gathering in which ʿAbdullah bin Ubai bin Salul was present, and that had been before ʿAbdullah embraced Islam. The gathering comprised of Muslims, polytheists, i.e., isolators and Jews. ʿAbdullah bin Rawaha was also present in that gathering. When dust raised by the donkey covered the gathering, ʿAbdullah bin Ubai covered his nose with his upper garment and said, "Do not trouble us with dust." The Prophet ﷺ greeted them, stopped and dismounted. Then he invited them to Allah (i.e., to embrace Islam) and recited to them some verses of the Holy Qur'an. On that, ʿAbdullah bin Ubai said, "O man ! There is nothing better than what you say if it is true. Do not trouble us with it in our gathering, but return to your house, and if somebody comes to you, teach him there." On that ʿAbdullah bin Rawaha said, Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Bring your teachings to our gathering, for we love that." So the Muslims, the pagans and the Jews started abusing each other till they were about to fight. The Prophet ﷺ kept on quietening them till they became calm. Thereupon the Prophet mounted his animal and proceeded till he entered upon Saʿd bin Ubada. He said to him "O Saʿd! Have you not heard what Abu Hubab (i.e., ʿAbdullah bin Ubai) said?" Saʿd said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Excuse and forgive him, for Allah has given you what He has given you. The people of this town (Medina decided unanimously to crown him and make him their chief by placing a turban on his head, but when that was prevented by the Truth which Allah had given you he (ʿAbdullah bin Ubai) was grieved out of jealously, and that was the reason which caused him to behave in the way you have seen." 42.17 [Machine] Placing the hand on the patient
I visited the Prophet ﷺ while he was having a high fever. I touched him an said, "You have a very high fever" He said, "Yes, as much fever as two me of you may have." I said. "you will have a double reward?" He said, "Yes No Muslim is afflicted with hurt caused by disease or some other inconvenience, but that Allah will remove his sins as a tree sheds its leaves." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5667)
42.18 [Machine] The position of the hand
[Machine] Saad, I complained in Mecca. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered (upon me), consoled me, and placed his hand on my forehead. He wiped my face, chest, and stomach, and said, "O Allah, heal Saad and complete his migration. It still seems to me that I can feel the coolness of his hand on my liver until now."
42.19 [Machine] What is said to the patient and what is their response?
[Machine] I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was suffering from a severe headache. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you are suffering from a severe headache." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Indeed, I am suffering from a headache in both my temples." I asked, "If so, do you have two rewards?" He replied, "Yes" or "Certainly." Then he said, "There is no Muslim who is harmed by a thorn or anything above it except that Allah removes his sins as the tree sheds its leaves."
Did you supplicate for anything or beg of Him about that? He said: Yes. I used to utter (these words): Impose punishment upon me earlier in this world, what Thou art going to impose upon me in the Hereafter. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Hallowed be Allah, you have neither the power nor forbearance to take upon yourself (the burden of His Punishment). Why did you not say this: O Allah, grant us good in the world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the torment of Fire. He (the Holy Prophet) made this supplication (for him) and he was all right. (Using translation from Muslim 2688a)

[Machine] "He complained in Mecca, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to see him and said, 'Pray to Allah, O Messenger of Allah, to relieve me.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made supplication for him, saying, 'O Allah, relieve Sa'd, as he benefits people with him and some are harmed by him.'"

“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to a sick person, he would make supplication for him, and would say: Adhhibil-bas, Rabban-nas, washfi Antash-Shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uka shifa’an la yughadiru saqama (Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3520)

[Machine] "He removed a woollen cloak and entered the water. I looked at him with admiration for his appearance, and I attracted him with my eyes. He was affected by a rustling sound, so I called him, but he did not respond to me. So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of the situation. He said, 'Come with us.' So I went to him, and he lifted his leg and it was as if I was looking at the whiteness of his leg, while he was immersed in water. He approached him and said, 'O Allah, remove its heat and cool it down.' Then he said to him, 'Get up.' So he got up. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If anyone of you sees something about himself, his wealth or his brother that pleases him, let him pray for blessings.'"

42.21 [Machine] The Return of the Patient's Purity
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once performed ablution without realizing it, and I poured water from my ablution water onto him. He then became conscious and I asked him, "Will I inherit from you as a son-in-law, and how will the inheritance be?" Then the verse of obligatory inheritance was revealed [to resolve this question].
42.22 [Machine] The return of the smile on the patient's face
I fell ill, and I had seven sisters. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me and blew on my face. So I became conscious. I said: Messenger of Allah, may I not bequeath one-third of my property to my sisters? He replied: Do good. I asked: Half? He replied: Do good. He then went out and left me, and said: I do not think, Jabir, you will die of this disease. Allah has revealed (verses) and described the share of your sisters. He appointed two-thirds for them. Jabir used to say: This verse was revealed about me: "They ask thee for a legal decision. Say: Allah directs (thus) about those who leave no descendants or ascendants as heirs. 42.23 [Machine] The prayer of the returning patient.
[Machine] Some people entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they sought permission from him. The time for prayer came, so he prayed with them sitting. They stood up, but he gestured to them to remain seated. When he finished his prayer, he said, "The imam is only appointed to be followed. So when he prays standing, you should pray standing; and when he bows, you should bow; and when he prays sitting, you should pray sitting."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ was thrown from his horse and injured his side, so they went in to check on him. He prayed with them while seated, and they stood up. He gestured to them to sit down. When he completed his prayer, he said, "Verily, the imam is to be followed. When he says 'Allahu Akbar' then say 'Allahu Akbar,' and when he bows, then bow, and when he prostrates, then prostrate, and when he prays while standing, then pray standing, and when he prays while seated, then pray seated, all together."

42.24 [Machine] The statement of the patient: Stand up from me.
When Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on his death-bed and in the house there were some people among whom was ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Come, let me write for you a statement after which you will not go astray." ʿUmar said, "The Prophet ﷺ is seriously ill and you have the Qur'an; so the Book of Allah is enough for us." The people present in the house differed and quarrelled. Some said "Go near so that the Prophet ﷺ may write for you a statement after which you will not go astray," while the others said as ʿUmar said. When they caused a hue and cry before the Prophet, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Go away!" Narrated 'Ubaidullah: Ibn ʿAbbas used to say, "It was very unfortunate that Messenger of Allah ﷺ was prevented from writing that statement for them because of their disagreement and noise." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5669)

42.25 [Machine] The patient desires death.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said," None of you should long for death because of a calamity that had befallen him, and if he cannot, but long for death, then he should say, 'O Allah! Let me live as long as life is better for me, and take my life if death is better for me.' " (Using translation from Bukhārī 6351)

42.26 [Machine] Taking the sick boy to ask for prayers
My aunt took me to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! This son of my sister has got a disease in his legs." So he passed his hands on my head and prayed for Allah's blessings for me; then he performed ablution and I drank from the remaining water. I stood behind him and saw the seal of Prophethood between his shoulders, and it was like the "Zir-al-Hijla" (means the button of a small tent, but some said 'egg of a partridge.' etc.) (Using translation from Bukhārī 190)

42.27 [Machine] The Prayer for the Transfer of the Epidemic
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, his companions, Abu Bakr, Aamir bin Fuhayra, a freed slave of Abu Bakr, and Bilal, complained about their health to Aisha, the wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . She sought permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to visit them and he granted her permission. She asked Abu Bakr, "How do you find yourself?" He replied, "Like a sea that is stormy. Every person is a source of trouble for his family, and death is closer to me than the straps of my sandals." She then asked Aamir bin Fuhayra and he replied, "I have seen death before tasting it. Indeed, a coward's death hangs over him like a cloud." Aisha also asked Bilal, and he replied, "I wish my hair would stay at night in a valley surrounded by lofty mountains, and that I would have access to the water of a paradise, and that no scars would appear on my body." Aisha then went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what they said. He looked up at the sky and said, "O Allah, make us love Medina, and bless us in its measured and unmeasured portions, and transfer its fever to Mahya' (a place) while it remains the Juhfa."

'O Messenger of Allah, we are nomads who follows the herds, not farmers and growers, and the climate of Al-Madinah does not suit us.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺtold them to go out to a flock of female camels and drink their milk and urine. When they recovered - and they were in the vicinity of Al-Harrah - they apostatized after having become Muslim, killed the camel-herder of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and drove the camels away. News of that reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he sent people after them. They were brought back, their eyes were smoldered with heated nails, their hands and feet cut off, then they were left in Al-Harrah in that state until they died." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 305)
ʿUmar went to Sham and when he reached Sargh, he got the news that an epidemic (of plague) had broken out in Sham. ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf told him that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you hear that it (plague) has broken out in a land, do not go to it; but if it breaks out in a land where you are present, do not go out escaping from it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5730)
That 'Abd al-Rahman b.'Awf said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: When you hear that it is breaking out in a certain territory, do not go there. If it breaks out in the territory you are in, do not go out fleeing away from it. By "it" he referred to the plague. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3103)
[Machine] Sa'd ibn Malik, Khuzaymah ibn Thabit, and Usamah ibn Zaid said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Verily, this plague is a punishment and a remaining torment with which a people were inflicted. So, if it occurs in a land while you are in it, do not leave running away from it. And if it occurs in a land and you are not in it, then do not enter it.'"
The Prophet mentioned the plague and said: "It is an abiding punishment or chastisement that was sent upon a group of the children of Isra'il. So when it occurs in a land while you are in it, then do not leave it. And when it occurs in a land while you are not in it, then do not enter it." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1065)
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Plague was a means of torture sent on a group of Israelis (or on some people before you). So if you hear of its spread in a land, don't approach it, and if a plague should appear in a land where you are present, then don't leave that land in order to run away from it (i.e. plague). (Using translation from Bukhārī 3473)
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are angels guarding the entrances (or roads) of Medina, neither plague nor Ad-Dajjal will be able to enter it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1880)
42.29 [Machine] The Reward of the Patient in the Plague
(the wife of the Prophet) that she asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ about plague, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed her saying, "Plague was a punishment which Allah used to send on whom He wished, but Allah made it a blessing for the believers. None (among the believers) remains patient in a land in which plague has broken out and considers that nothing will befall him except what Allah has ordained for him, but that Allah will grant him a reward similar to that of a martyr." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5734)
