I went to ʿAisha and asked her to describe to me the illness of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿAisha said, "Yes. The Prophet became seriously ill and asked whether the people had prayed. We replied, 'No. O Allah's Apostle! They are waiting for you.' He added, 'Put water for me in a trough." ʿAisha added, "We did so. He took a bath and tried to get up but fainted. When he recovered, he again asked whether the people had prayed. We said, 'No, they are waiting for you. O Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' He again said, 'Put water in a trough for me.' He sat down and took a bath and tried to get up but fainted again. Then he recovered and said, 'Have the people prayed?' We replied, 'No, they are waiting for you. O Allah's Apostle.' He said, 'Put water for me in the trough.' Then he sat down and washed himself and tried to get up but he fainted. When he recovered, he asked, 'Have the people prayed?' We said, 'No, they are waiting for you. O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The people were in the mosque waiting for the Prophet ﷺ for the ʿIsha prayer. The Prophet ﷺ sent for Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer. The messenger went to Abu Bakr and said, 'Messenger of Allah ﷺ orders you to lead the people in the prayer.' Abu Bakr was a softhearted man, so he asked ʿUmar to lead the prayer but ʿUmar replied, 'You are more rightful.' So Abu Bakr led the prayer in those days. When the Prophet ﷺ felt a bit better, he came out for the Zuhr prayer with the help of two persons one of whom was Al-ʿAbbas. while Abu Bakr was leading the people in the prayer. When Abu Bakr saw him he wanted to retreat but the Prophet ﷺ beckoned him not to do so and asked them to make him sit beside Abu Bakr and they did so. Abu Bakr was following the Prophet (in the prayer) and the people were following Abu Bakr. The Prophet (prayed) sitting." 'Ubaidullah added "I went to ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbbas and asked him, Shall I tell you what Aisha has told me about the fatal illness of the Prophet?' Ibn ʿAbbas said, 'Go ahead. I told him her narration and he did not deny anything of it but asked whether ʿAisha told me the name of the second person (who helped the Prophet ﷺ ) along with Al-Abbas. I said. 'No.' He said, 'He was ʿAli (Ibn Abi Talib).

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَقُلْتُ أَلاَ تُحَدِّثِينِي عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ بَلَى ثَقُلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ قُلْنَا لاَ هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ قَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ قَالَتْ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ فَذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ ﷺ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ قُلْنَا لاَ هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ قَالَتْ فَقَعَدَ فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ قُلْنَا لاَ هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَقَعَدَ فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ فَقُلْنَا لاَ هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُونَ النَّبِيَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ لِصَلاَةِ الْعِشَاءِ الآخِرَةِ فَأَرْسَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ بِأَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَأَتَاهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ رَجُلاً رَقِيقًا يَا عُمَرُ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ فَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ تِلْكَ الأَيَّامَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَجَدَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً فَخَرَجَ بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا الْعَبَّاسُ لِصَلاَةِ الظُّهْرِ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِأَنْ لاَ يَتَأَخَّرَ قَالَ أَجْلِسَانِي إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي وَهْوَ يَأْتَمُّ بِصَلاَةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ بِصَلاَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَاعِدٌ قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَلاَ أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ مَا حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ عَنْ مَرَضِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ هَاتِ فَعَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَدِيثَهَا فَمَا أَنْكَرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَسَمَّتْ لَكَ الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعَ الْعَبَّاسِ قُلْتُ لاَ قَالَ هُوَ عَلِيٌّ

I visited 'A'isha and asked her to tell about the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She agreed and said: The Apostle ﷺ was seriously ill and he asked whether the people had prayed. We said: No, they are waiting for you, Messenger of Allah. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Put some water in the tub for me. We did accordingly and he (the Holy Prophet) took a bath;and, when he was about to move with difficulty, he fainted. When he came round, he again said: Have the people said prayer? We said: No, they are waiting for you, Messenger of Allah. He (the Holy Prophet) again said: Put some water for me in the tub. We did accordingly and he took a bag, but when he was about to move with difficultyhe fainted. When he came round, he asked whether the people had prayed. We said: No, they are waiting for you, Messenger of Allah. He said: Put some water for me in the tub. We did accordingly and he took a bath and he was about to move with difficulty when he fainted. When he came roundhe said: Have the people saidprayer? We said: No, they are waiting for you, Messenger of Allah. She ('A'isha) said: The people were staying in the mosque and waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead the last (night) prayer. She ('A'isha) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent (instructions) to Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. When the messenger came, he told him (Abd Bakr): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has ordered you to lead the people in prayer. Abu Bakr who was a man of very tenderly feelings asked Umar to lead the prayer. 'Umar said: You are more entitled to that. Abu Bakr led the prayers during those days. Afterwards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt some relief and he went out supported by two men, one of them was al-'Abbas, to the noon prayer. Abu Bakr was leading the people in prayer. When Abu Bakr saw him. he began to withdraw, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him not to withdraw. He told his two (companions) to seat him down beside him (Abu Bakr). They seated him by the side of Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr said the prayer standing while following the prayer of the Apostle ﷺ and the people Bald prayer (standing) while following the prayer of Abu Bakr. The Apostle ﷺ was seated. Ubaidullah said: I visited 'Abdullah b. 'Abbas, and said: Should I submit to you what 'A'isha had told about the illness of the Apostle ﷺ? He said: Go ahead. I submitted to him what had been transmitted by her ('A'isha). He objected to none of it, only asking whether she had named to him the man who accompanied al-'Abbas. I said: No. He said: It was 'Ali.

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَقُلْتُ لَهَا أَلاَ تُحَدِّثِينِي عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ بَلَى ثَقُلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ قُلْنَا لاَ وَهُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ قُلْنَا لاَ وَهُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ قُلْنَا لاَ وَهُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ فَقُلْنَا لاَ وَهُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَتْ وَالنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِصَلاَةِ الْعِشَاءِ الآخِرَةِ قَالَتْ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَأَتَاهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ رَجُلاً رَقِيقًا يَا عُمَرُ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ قَالَتْ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ تِلْكَ الأَيَّامَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجَدَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً فَخَرَجَ بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا الْعَبَّاسُ لِصَلاَةِ الظُّهْرِ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ لاَ يَتَأَخَّرَ وَقَالَ لَهُمَا أَجْلِسَانِي إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ بِصَلاَةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلاَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَاعِدٌ قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَلاَ أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ مَا حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ هَاتِ فَعَرَضْتُ حَدِيثَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَمَا أَنْكَرَ مِنْهُ شِيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَسَمَّتْ لَكَ الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعَ الْعَبَّاسِ قُلْتُ لاَ قَالَ هُوَ عَلِيٌّ

"I entered upon Aisha and said: 'Will you not tell me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' She said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, became seriously ill, he said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ" He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then he came to us and said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then for the third time he said the same thing. She said: The people were in the Masjid, waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead the prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to Abu Bakr, telling him to lead the people in prayer, so the messenger came to him and said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is telling you to lead the people in prayer." Abu Bakr was a tenderhearted man, he said: "0 'Umar. lead the in prayer." But ('Umar) said: "You have more right to that." So Abu Bakr led them in prayer during those days. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt a little better, he came with the help of two men, one of whom was Al-'Abbas, to pray Zuhr. When Abu Bakr saw him, he wanted to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him not to step back. He told them (the two men) to seat him beside Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr started to pray standing. The people were following the prayer of Abu Bakr and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying sitting."' "I ('Ubaidullah) entered upon Ibn Abbas and said 'Shall I not tell you what Aisha narrated to me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.' So I told him and he did not deny any of it, but he said: 'Did she tell you the name of the man who was with Al-'Abbas?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'That was Ali, may Allah honor his face."'

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَقُلْتُ أَلاَ تُحَدِّثِينِي عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ لَمَّا ثَقُلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ فَقُلْنَا لاَ وَهُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ قُلْنَا لاَ هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ قَالَتْ وَالنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِصَلاَةِ الْعِشَاءِ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنْ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَجَاءَهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَجُلاً رَقِيقًا فَقَالَ يَا عُمَرُ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ تِلْكَ الأَيَّامَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجَدَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً فَجَاءَ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا الْعَبَّاسُ لِصَلاَةِ الظُّهْرِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ لاَ يَتَأَخَّرَ وَأَمَرَهُمَا فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَجَعَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي قَائِمًا وَالنَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلاَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ أَلاَ أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ مَا حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ فَمَا أَنْكَرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَسَمَّتْ لَكَ الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعَ الْعَبَّاسِ قُلْتُ لاَ قَالَ هُوَ عَلِيٌّ كَرَّمَ اللَّهُ وَجْهَهُ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fainted when he was sick, then he woke up and said: ‘Has the time for prayer come?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ Then he fainted, then he woke up and said: ‘Has the time for prayer come?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ Then he fainted, then he woke up and said: ‘Has the time for prayer come?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ ‘Aishah said: ‘My father is a tender-hearted man, and if he stands in that place he will weep and will not be able to do it. If you told someone else to do it (that would be better).’ Then he fainted, then woke up and said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. You are (like) the female companions of Yusuf.’ So Bilal was told to call the Adhan and he did so, and Abu Bakr was told to lead the people in prayer, and he did so. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt a little better, and he said: ‘Find me someone I can lean on.’ Barirah and another man came, and he leaned on them. When Abu Bakr saw him, he started to step back, but (the Prophet ﷺ) gestured him to stay where he was. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat beside Abu Bakr, until Abu Bakr finished praying. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away.”

سَلَمَةُ بْنُ نُبَيْطٍ أَنْبَأَنَا عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ عَنْ نُبَيْطِ بْنِ شَرِيطٍ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ أُغْمِيَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي مَرَضِهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ مُرُوا بِلاَلاً فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ أَوْ لِلنَّاسِ ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ مُرُوا بِلاَلاً فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ مُرُوا بِلاَلاً فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ أَبِي رَجُلٌ أَسِيفٌ فَإِذَا قَامَ ذَلِكَ الْمُقَامَ يَبْكِي لاَ يَسْتَطِيعُ فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ غَيْرَهُ ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَفَاقَ فَقَالَ مُرُوا بِلاَلاً فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَإِنَّكُنَّ صَوَاحِبُ يُوسُفَ أَوْ صَوَاحِبَاتُ يُوسُفَ قَالَ فَأُمِرَ بِلاَلٌ فَأَذَّنَ وَأُمِرَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجَدَ خِفَّةً فَقَالَ انْظُرُوا لِي مَنْ أَتَّكِئُ عَلَيْهِ فَجَاءَتْ بَرِيرَةُ وَرَجُلٌ آخَرُ فَاتَّكَأَ عَلَيْهِمَا فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَنْكُصَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ أَنِ اثْبُتْ مَكَانَكَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حَتَّى قَضَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ صَلاَتَهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُبِضَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ لَمْ يُحَدِّثْ بِهِ غَيْرُ نَصْرِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ

I went to ʿAisha and asked her to describe to me the illness of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿAisha said, "Yes. The Prophet became seriously ill and asked whether the people had prayed. We replied, 'No. O Allah's Apostle! They are waiting for you.' He added, 'Put water for me in a trough." ʿAisha added, "We did so. He took a bath and tried to get up but fainted. When he recovered, he again asked whether the people had prayed. We said, 'No, they are waiting for you. O Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' He again said, 'Put water in a trough for me.' He sat down and took a bath and tried to get up but fainted again. Then he recovered and said, 'Have the people prayed?' We replied, 'No, they are waiting for you. O Allah's Apostle.' He said, 'Put water for me in the trough.' Then he sat down and washed himself and tried to get up but he fainted. When he recovered, he asked, 'Have the people prayed?' We said, 'No, they are waiting for you. O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The people were in the mosque waiting for the Prophet ﷺ for the ʿIsha prayer. The Prophet ﷺ sent for Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer. The messenger went to Abu Bakr and said, 'Messenger of Allah ﷺ orders you to lead the people in the prayer.' Abu Bakr was a softhearted man, so he asked ʿUmar to lead the prayer but ʿUmar replied, 'You are more rightful.' So Abu Bakr led the prayer in those days. When the Prophet ﷺ felt a bit better, he came out for the Zuhr prayer with the help of two persons one of whom was Al-ʿAbbas. while Abu Bakr was leading the people in the prayer. When Abu Bakr saw him he wanted to retreat but the Prophet ﷺ beckoned him not to do so and asked them to make him sit beside Abu Bakr and they did so. Abu Bakr was following the Prophet (in the prayer) and the people were following Abu Bakr. The Prophet (prayed) sitting." 'Ubaidullah added "I went to ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbbas and asked him, Shall I tell you what Aisha has told me about the fatal illness of the Prophet?' Ibn ʿAbbas said, 'Go ahead. I told him her narration and he did not deny anything of it but asked whether ʿAisha told me the name of the second person (who helped the Prophet ﷺ ) along with Al-Abbas. I said. 'No.' He said, 'He was ʿAli (Ibn Abi Talib). (Using translation from Bukhārī 687)

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَقُلْتُ لَهَا أَلَا تُحَدِّثِينِي عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَتْ بَلَى ثَقُلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» قُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ «ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ» قَالَتْ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» فَقُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ «ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ» فَفَعَلْنَا ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» فَقُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَتْ وَالنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِصَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ قَالَتْ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَتْ فَأَتَاهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكَ بِأَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ رَجُلًا رَقِيقًا يَا عُمَرُ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ قَالَتْ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ تِلْكَ الْأَيَّامَ قَالَتْ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجَدَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً فَخَرَجَ بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا الْعَبَّاسُ لِصَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ لَا يَتَأَخَّرَ وَقَالَ لَهُمَا «أَجْلِسَانِي إِلَى جَنْبِهِ» فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ قَالَتْ فَجَعَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ بِصَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلَاةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَاعِدٌ قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَلَا أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ مَا حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَ هَاتِ فَعَرَضْتُ حَدِيثَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَمَا أَنْكَرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَسَمَّتْ لَكَ الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعَ الْعَبَّاسِ؟ قُلْتُ لَا فَقَالَ هُوَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ

"I entered upon Aisha and said: 'Will you not tell me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' She said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, became seriously ill, he said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ" He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then he came to us and said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then for the third time he said the same thing. She said: The people were in the Masjid, waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead the prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to Abu Bakr, telling him to lead the people in prayer, so the messenger came to him and said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is telling you to lead the people in prayer." Abu Bakr was a tenderhearted man, he said: "0 'Umar. lead the in prayer." But ('Umar) said: "You have more right to that." So Abu Bakr led them in prayer during those days. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt a little better, he came with the help of two men, one of whom was Al-'Abbas, to pray Zuhr. When Abu Bakr saw him, he wanted to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him not to step back. He told them (the two men) to seat him beside Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr started to pray standing. The people were following the prayer of Abu Bakr and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying sitting."' "I ('Ubaidullah) entered upon Ibn Abbas and said 'Shall I not tell you what Aisha narrated to me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.' So I told him and he did not deny any of it, but he said: 'Did she tell you the name of the man who was with Al-'Abbas?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'That was Ali, may Allah honor his face."' When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was confined to bed, Bilal came to him to summon him to prayer. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Ask Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. She ('A'isha) reported: I said: Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr is a tenderhearted man, when he would stand at your place (he would be so overwhelmed by feelings) that he would not be able to make the people hear anything (his recitation would not be audible to the followers in prayer). You should better order Umar (to lead the prayer). He (the Holy Prophet) said: Ask Abu Bakr to lead people in prayer. She ('A'isha) said: I asked Hafsa to (convey) my impression to him (the Holy Prophet) that Abu Bakr was a tenderhearted man, so when he would stand at his place, he would not be able to make the people bear anything. He better order Umar. Hafsa conveyed this (message of Hadrat 'A'isha) to him (the Holy Prophet). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: (You are behaving) as if you are the females who had gathered around Yusuf. Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. She ('A'isha) reported: So Abu Bakr was ordered to lead the people in prayer. As the prayer began, the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) felt some relief; he got up and moved supported by two persons and his feet dragged on earth (due to excessive weakness). 'A'isha reported: As he (the Holy Prophet) entered the mosque. Abu Bakr perceived his (arrival). He was about to withdraw, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by the gesture (of his hand) told him to keep standing at his place. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and seated himself on the left side of Abu Bakr. She ('A'isha) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was leading people in prayer sitting. Abu Bakr was following the prayer of the Apostle ﷺ in a standing posture and the people were following the prayer of Abu Bakr. (Using translation from Muslim 418f)

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَقُلْتُ أَلَا تُحَدِّثِينِي عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَتْ بَلَى ثَقُلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟ فَقُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟ فَقُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ فَذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟ فَقُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَتْ وَالنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُونَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لِصَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَجُلًا رَقِيقًا فَقَالَ يَا عُمَرُ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّبِذَلِكَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ تِلْكَ الْأَيَّامَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَجَدَ خِفَّةً فَخَرَجَ بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا الْعَبَّاسُ لِصَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ لَا تَتَأَخَّرَ وَأَمَرَهُمَا فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَجَعَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي قَائِمًا وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ أَلَا أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ مَا حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ هَاتِ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ فَمَا أَنْكَرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَسَمَّتْ لَكَ الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعَ الْعَبَّاسِ؟ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ هُوَ عَلِيٌّ

"I entered upon Aisha and said: 'Will you not tell me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' She said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, became seriously ill, he said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ" He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then he came to us and said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then for the third time he said the same thing. She said: The people were in the Masjid, waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead the prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to Abu Bakr, telling him to lead the people in prayer, so the messenger came to him and said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is telling you to lead the people in prayer." Abu Bakr was a tenderhearted man, he said: "0 'Umar. lead the in prayer." But ('Umar) said: "You have more right to that." So Abu Bakr led them in prayer during those days. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt a little better, he came with the help of two men, one of whom was Al-'Abbas, to pray Zuhr. When Abu Bakr saw him, he wanted to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him not to step back. He told them (the two men) to seat him beside Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr started to pray standing. The people were following the prayer of Abu Bakr and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying sitting."' "I ('Ubaidullah) entered upon Ibn Abbas and said 'Shall I not tell you what Aisha narrated to me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.' So I told him and he did not deny any of it, but he said: 'Did she tell you the name of the man who was with Al-'Abbas?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'That was Ali, may Allah honor his face."' [AI] She said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fainted, and when he woke up, he said, "Should the call to prayer be made?" We said, "No." He said, "Ask Bilal to go ahead and start the prayer and Abu Bakr should lead the people in prayer." She said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man who cannot recite without crying." He looked at her and, after she finished speaking, he fainted. Aisha said, "When Abu Bakr realized that the Prophet ﷺ was coming, he wanted to move but the Prophet gestured to him to stay. Then they brought a mat for the Prophet and placed it in front of Abu Bakr."

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ قَالَ «هَلْ نُودِيَ بِالصَّلَاةِ؟ » فَقُلْنَا لَا فَقَالَ «مُرِي بِلَالًا فَلْيُبَادِرْ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ» قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ أَسِيفٌ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَقُومَ مَقَامَكَ قَالَتْ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيَّ حِينَ فَرَغَ مِنْ كَلَامِهِ ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ قَالَ «هَلْ نُودِيَ بِالصَّلَاةِ؟ » قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ لَا قَالَ «مُرِي بِلَالًا فَلْيُنَادِ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ» قَالَتْ فَأَوْمَأَتْ إِلَى حَفْصَةَ فَقَالَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ رَقِيقٌ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَقْرَأَ إِلَّا يَبْكِي قَالَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا حِينَ فَرَغَتْ مِنْ كَلَامِهَا ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ قَالَ «هَلْ نُودِيَ بِالصَّلَاةِ؟ » قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ لَا فَقَالَ «مُرِي بِلَالًا فَلْيُنَادِ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّكُنَّ صَوَاحِبَاتُ يُوسُفَ» ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ فَأَقَامَ بِلَالٌ الصَّلَاةَ وَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَ بِنُوبَةَ وَبَرِيرَةَ فَاحْتَمَلَاهُ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى أَصَابِعِ قَدَمَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَخُطُّ فِي الْأَرْضِ قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا أَحَسَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ بِمَجِيءِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَسْتَأْخِرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ يَثْبُتَ قَالَتْ وَجِيءَ بِنَبِيِّ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَوُضِعَ بِحِذَاءِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فِي الصَّفِّ

[AI] A dispute occurred between the tribes of Bani Amr ibn Awf, to the extent that they began throwing stones at each other. This incident was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ , so he went out to reconcile between them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was held back until Bilal called the Adhan (call to prayer), then he went to Abu Bakr and said to him, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been delayed, would you lead the prayer?" Abu Bakr replied, "Yes." He led the prayer, and when the Prophet ﷺ arrived, he stood beside Abu Bakr, raised his hands and then led the people in prayer. After the prayer, the people praised Abu Bakr, and the Prophet ﷺ did not look back during his prayer. The Prophet ﷺ moved through the people until Abu Bakr heard his footsteps behind him and went to move back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Stay where you are, O Abu Bakr, continue to pray with us." Abu Bakr lifted his hands to the sky, intending to prolong the prayer, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced and led the people in prayer. When the prayer ended, he asked Abu Bakr, "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from praying with the people when I commanded you to lead them in prayer?" Abu Bakr replied, "O Messenger of Allah, by my father and mother, it was not appropriate for the son of Abu Quhafa to lead the prayer in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Did you raise your hands to the sky?" Abu Bakr answered, "I praised Allah when you commanded me to lead the prayer with you, then I turned to face the people." The Prophet ﷺ then said to the people, "O people, what is the matter with you during your prayer when something happens that you start clapping? Clapping is only done by women. Whoever experiences something in their prayer should glorify Allah and the one behind them should turn to them."

وَقَعَ بَيْنَ بَنِي عَمْرِو بْنِ عَوْفٍ حَتَّى تَرَامَوْا بِالْحِجَارَةِ فَذُكِرَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ لِيُصْلِحَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَاحْتَبَسَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى أَذَّنَ بِلَالٌ بِالصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ قَدِ احْتَبَسَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَتُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ بَلَى فَأَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ فَتَقَدَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ وَكَبَّرَ وَطَلَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَفَّقَ النَّاسُ بِأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ لَا يَلْتَفِتُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ وَتَخَلَّلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ النَّاسَ حَتَّى سَمِعَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ حِسَّهُ خَلْفَهُ فَذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «كَمَا أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ صَلِّ بِنَا» فَرَفَعَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَدَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ لِيَسْتَأْخِرَ وَتَقَدَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ «يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ مَا مَنَعَكَ حِينَ أَمَرْتُكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِهِمْ؟» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي مَا كَانَ يَنْبَغِي لِابْنِ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «تَمُدُّ يَدَيْكَ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ؟» قَالَ حَمِدْتُ اللهَ حِينَ أَمَرْتَنِي أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ بِكَ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ مَا لَكُمْ حِينَ نَابَكُمْ فِي صَلَاتِكُمْ شَيْءٌ أَخَذْتُمْ بِالتَّصْفِيقِ إِنَّمَا التَّصْفِيقُ لِلنِّسَاءِ فَمَنْ نَابَهُ شَيْءٌ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَلْيُسَبِّحْ وَلْيَلْتَفِتْ إِلَيْهِ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ»

[AI] Salmah bin Nubayt narrated that Nuaym bin Abi Hind narrated from Nubayt bin Shurayt from Salim bin Ubaid who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lost consciousness during his illness and then regained consciousness and asked, "Is the prayer ready?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Ask Bilal to give the adhan and ask Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Aisha said, "Indeed, my father is a man who is very weak. If you order someone else to lead the people in prayer, he will do so. Then the Prophet lost consciousness again and then regained consciousness and asked, "Has the prayer been established?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Ask Bilal to give the adhan and ask Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Aisha said, "Indeed, my father is a man who is very weak. If you order someone else to lead the people in prayer and then he prays with them, he will do so." Then the Prophet lost consciousness again and then regained consciousness and asked, "Has the prayer been established?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Bring me someone whom I can rely on." So Buraydah and another person came and he relied on both of them. The Prophet then entered the mosque and Abu Bakr was standing there leading the people in prayer. Abu Bakr then moved away and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prevented him from doing so and made him sit next to him until he finished his prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away. Umar said, "I do not hear anyone saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has passed away except that I strike him with the sword." He took hold of my arm and relied on me and started walking until we came. He said, "Make room for him." So they made room for him and he approached and touched him and recited, "Indeed, you are destined to die, and indeed, they are destined to die," Then they said, "O companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away?" He said, "Yes." So they knew that it was as he had said. They said, "O companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, shall we pray for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "Yes." They said, "How should we pray for him?" He said, "A group will enter and make takbeer, supplicate, and pray, then they will leave and another group will come until they finish." They said, "O companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, should the Messenger of Allah ﷺ be buried?" He said, "Yes." They said, "Where should he be buried?" He said, "Where he passed away, for indeed Allah did not take him away except from a blessed spot." So they knew that it was as he had said. Then he stood up and said, "Your leader is among you," and he ordered them to wash him. Then he left and the Muhajirun gathered to consult each other. They said, "Go to our brothers among the Ansar, for they have a share in this matter." So they went and a man from the Ansar said, "We have a leader among us and you have a leader among you." Then Umar took the hand of Abu Bakr and said, "Tell me about these three: 'When they were in the cave...' Who are they?" "When one said to his companion, 'Do not be sad...' Who is his companion?" "Indeed, Allah is with us." He took hold of the hand of Abu Bakr and struck it and said to the people, "Give him your pledge of allegiance." So they gave him their pledge of allegiance with a good and beautiful pledge.

ثنا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ نُبَيْطٍ عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدَ عَنْ نُبَيْطِ بْنِ شُرَيْطٍ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ أُغْمِى عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَرَضِهِ فَأَفَاقَ فَقَالَ «حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ؟» فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ «مُرُوا بِلَالًا فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ» فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ ؓ إِنَّ أَبِي رَجُلٌ أَسِيفٌ فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ غَيْرَهُ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَفَاقَ فَقَالَ «هَلْ حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «مُرُوا بِلَالًا فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ» فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ أَبِي رَجُلٌ أَسِيفٌ فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ غَيْرَهُ فَيُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَفَاقَ فَقَالَ «أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «ائْتُونِي بِإِنْسَانٍ أَعْتَمِدُ عَلَيْهِ» فَجَاءَ بُرَيْدَةُ وَإِنْسَانٌ آخَرُ فَاعْتَمَدَ عَلَيْهِمَا فَأَتَى الْمَسْجِدَ فَدَخَلَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَذَهَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَتَنَحَّى فَمَنَعَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأُجْلِسَ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ فَقُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ لَا أَسْمَعُ رَجُلًا يَقُولُ مَاتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَّا ضَرَبْتُهُ بِالسَّيْفِ فَأَخَذَ بِذِرَاعِي فَاعْتَمَدَ عَلَيَّ وَقَامَ يَمْشِي حَتَّى جِئْنَا قَالَ أَوْسِعُوا فَأَوْسَعُوا لَهُ فَأَكَبَّ عَلَيْهِ وَمَسَّهُ وَقَالَ {إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُمْ مَيِّتُونَ} قَالُوا يَا صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ مَاتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَعَلِمُوا أَنَّهُ كَمَا قَالَ قَالُوا يَا صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ أَنُصَلِّي عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالُوا كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ؟ قَالَ يَدْخُلُ قَوْمٌ فَيُكَبِّرُونَ وَيَدْعُونَ وَيُصَلُّونَ ثُمَّ يَنْصَرِفُونَ وَيَجِيءُ آخَرُونُ حَتَّى يَفْرُغُوا قَالُوا يَا صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ أَيُدْفَنُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالُوا وَأَيْنَ يُدْفَنُ؟ قَالَ حَيْثُ قُبِضَ فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى لَمْ يَقْبِضْهُ إِلَّا فِي بُقْعَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ فَعَلِمُوا أَنَّهُ كَمَا قَالَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَقَالَ عِنْدَكُمْ صَاحِبُكُمْ فَأَمَرَهُمْ يُغَسِّلُونَهُ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ وَاجْتَمَعَ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ يَتَشَاوَرُونَ فَقَالُوا انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى إِخْوَانِنَا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَإِنَّ لَهُمْ فِي هَذَا الْأَمْرِ نَصِيبًا فَانْطَلَقُوا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ مِنَّا أَمِيرٌ وَمِنْكُمْ أَمِيرٌ فَأَخَذَ عُمَرُ بِيَدِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ فَقَالَ أَخْبِرُونِي مَنْ لَهُ هَذِهِ الثَّلَاثَةُ {ثَانِيَ اثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ} مَنْ هُمَا؟ {إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ} مَنْ صَاحِبُهُ؟ {إِنَّ اللهَ مَعَنَا} فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ فَضَرَبَ عَلَيْهَا وَقَالَ لِلنَّاسِ بَايِعُوهُ فَبَايَعُوهُ بَيْعَةً حَسَنَةً جَمِيلَةً

"I entered upon Aisha and said: 'Will you not tell me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' She said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, became seriously ill, he said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ" He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then he came to us and said: "Have the people prayed?" We said: "No, they are waiting for you, 0 Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: "Put some water in a tub for me." We did that and he performed Ghusl, then he tried to get up but he fainted. Then for the third time he said the same thing. She said: The people were in the Masjid, waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead the prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to Abu Bakr, telling him to lead the people in prayer, so the messenger came to him and said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is telling you to lead the people in prayer." Abu Bakr was a tenderhearted man, he said: "0 'Umar. lead the in prayer." But ('Umar) said: "You have more right to that." So Abu Bakr led them in prayer during those days. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt a little better, he came with the help of two men, one of whom was Al-'Abbas, to pray Zuhr. When Abu Bakr saw him, he wanted to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him not to step back. He told them (the two men) to seat him beside Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr started to pray standing. The people were following the prayer of Abu Bakr and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying sitting."' "I ('Ubaidullah) entered upon Ibn Abbas and said 'Shall I not tell you what Aisha narrated to me about the sickness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.' So I told him and he did not deny any of it, but he said: 'Did she tell you the name of the man who was with Al-'Abbas?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'That was Ali, may Allah honor his face."' عَنْ مَرِضِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَتْ بَلَى ثَقُلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» فَقُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ» فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» قُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قال «ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ» فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ «أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟» قُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ الثَّالِثَةَ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ قَالَتْ وَالنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُونَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لِصَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَجَاءَهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَجُلًا رَقِيقًا فَقَالَ يَا عُمَرُ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ تِلْكَ الْأَيَّامَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَجَدَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً فَجَاءَ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا الْعَبَّاسُ لِصَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ لَا يَتَأَخَّرَ وَأَمَرَهُمَا فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَجَعَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي قَائِمًا وَالنَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلَاةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ أَلَا أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ مَا حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ عَنْ مَرِضِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ فَمَا أَنْكَرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ سَمَّتْ لَكَ الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعَ الْعَبَّاسِ؟ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ هُوَ عَلِيٌّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مُوسَى بْنُ أَبِي عَائِشَةَ ثِقَةٌ كَانَ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ يُحْسِنُ الثَّنَاءَ عَلَى مُوسَى بْنِ أَبِي عَائِشَةَ وَهُوَ كُوفِيٌّ

She said, 'So the Messenger sent someone to Abu Bakr asking him to lead the people in prayer.' Abu Bakr, being a gentle man, said to Umar, 'You should lead the people in prayer.' Umar said to him, 'You are more deserving of that.' So Abu Bakr led the people in prayer during those days."

So they did, and Abu Bakr led the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was standing and the people were praying behind Abu Bakr, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting. Ubaidullah bin Abdullah said, "So I entered upon Abdullah bin Abbas and said to him, 'Shall I not narrate to you what Aisha told me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?' He said, 'Yes, please do.' So I narrated to him her hadith, and he did not deny anything from it except that he said, 'Did the other man who was with Al-Abbas also call you by name?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'That was Ali.'"

مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ بَلَى فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ بِطُولِهِ قَدْ نَقَلْنَاهُ فِي كِتَابِ الطَّهَارَةِ إِلَى أَنْ قَالَتْ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَأَتَاهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ رَجُلًا رَقِيقًا يَا عُمَرُ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَ عُمَرُ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ فَفَعَلَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ تِلْكَ الْأَيَّامَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَجَدَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً فَخَرَجَ بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا الْعَبَّاسُ لِصَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ لَا يَتَأَخَّرَ وَقَالَ لَهُمَا أَجْلِسَانِي إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي بِصَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ وَالنَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلَاةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَاعِدٌ قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَلَا أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ مَا حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ هَاتِ فَعَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَدِيثَهَا فَمَا أَنْكَرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَسَمَّتْ لَكَ الرَّجُلَ الْآخَرَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعَ الْعَبَّاسِ؟ فَقُلْتُ لَا قَالَ هُوَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ

[AI] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became sick, Bilal came to call him for prayer. He said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man, and when he stands in your place, he will not be able to make his voice heard by the people. If you command Umar, he will surely lead the people in prayer." He said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." So I said the same to Hafsah, and she said the same to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You women resemble in your attitude the women who tempted Yusuf. Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." So they told Abu Bakr, and he led the people in prayer. When he entered the prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt so much better that he came out with the help of two men, with his feet dragging. When he came to the mosque and Abu Bakr heard him breathe, he went to withdraw, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ motioned him to stay where he was. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat on the left of Abu Bakr. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to lead the people in prayer while sitting, and Abu Bakr used to pray standing, following the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ , and the people followed the prayer of Abu Bakr. This is the wording of the Hadith of Yahya bin Yahya.

لَمَّا ثَقُلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَاءَ بِلَالٌ يُؤْذِنُهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ أَسِيفٌ وَإِنَّهُ مَتَى يَقُمْ مَقَامَكَ لَا يُسْمِعِ النَّاسَ فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ عُمَرَ قَالَ مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ لِحَفْصَةَ قُولِي لَهُ إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ أَسِيفٌ وَإنَّهُ مَتَى يَقُمْ مَقَامَكَ لَا يُسْمِعِ النَّاسَ فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ عُمَرَ فَقَالَتْ لَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّكُنَّ لَأَنْتُنَّ صَوَاحِبُ يُوسُفَ مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَ فَأَمَرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً قَالَتْ فَقَامَ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ وَرِجْلَاهُ تَخُطَّانِ فِي الْأَرْضِ قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ وَسَمِعَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ حِسَّهُ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قُمْ مَكَانَكَ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى جَلَسَ عَنْ يَسَارِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ قَالَتْ فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ جَالِسًا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ قَائِمًا يَقْتَدِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ بِصَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَيَقْتَدِي النَّاسُ بِصَلَاةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى

I went to ʿAisha and asked her to describe to me the illness of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿAisha said, "Yes. The Prophet became seriously ill and asked whether the people had prayed. We replied, 'No. O Allah's Apostle! They are waiting for you.' He added, 'Put water for me in a trough." ʿAisha added, "We did so. He took a bath and tried to get up but fainted. When he recovered, he again asked whether the people had prayed. We said, 'No, they are waiting for you. O Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' He again said, 'Put water in a trough for me.' He sat down and took a bath and tried to get up but fainted again. Then he recovered and said, 'Have the people prayed?' We replied, 'No, they are waiting for you. O Allah's Apostle.' He said, 'Put water for me in the trough.' Then he sat down and washed himself and tried to get up but he fainted. When he recovered, he asked, 'Have the people prayed?' We said, 'No, they are waiting for you. O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The people were in the mosque waiting for the Prophet ﷺ for the ʿIsha prayer. The Prophet ﷺ sent for Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer. The messenger went to Abu Bakr and said, 'Messenger of Allah ﷺ orders you to lead the people in the prayer.' Abu Bakr was a softhearted man, so he asked ʿUmar to lead the prayer but ʿUmar replied, 'You are more rightful.' So Abu Bakr led the prayer in those days. When the Prophet ﷺ felt a bit better, he came out for the Zuhr prayer with the help of two persons one of whom was Al-ʿAbbas. while Abu Bakr was leading the people in the prayer. When Abu Bakr saw him he wanted to retreat but the Prophet ﷺ beckoned him not to do so and asked them to make him sit beside Abu Bakr and they did so. Abu Bakr was following the Prophet (in the prayer) and the people were following Abu Bakr. The Prophet (prayed) sitting." 'Ubaidullah added "I went to ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbbas and asked him, Shall I tell you what Aisha has told me about the fatal illness of the Prophet?' Ibn ʿAbbas said, 'Go ahead. I told him her narration and he did not deny anything of it but asked whether ʿAisha told me the name of the second person (who helped the Prophet ﷺ ) along with Al-Abbas. I said. 'No.' He said, 'He was ʿAli (Ibn Abi Talib). (Using translation from Bukhārī 687)

مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَتْ بَلَى ثَقُلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟ فَقُلْتُ لَا وَهُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ ضَعُوا مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ قَالَتْ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟ قُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ قَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟ قُلْتُ لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ فَقَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ؟ قُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ والنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ لِصَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ قَالَتْ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ بِأَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَتْ فَأَتَاهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكَ بِأَنْ تُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ وَكَانَ رَجُلًا رَقِيقًا يَا عُمَرُ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ ؓ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ فَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ تِلْكَ الْأَيَّامَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَجَدَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً فَخَرَجَ بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا الْعَبَّاسُ لِصَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ فَأَوْمَى إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِأَنْ لَا يَتَأَخَّرَ قَالَ أَجْلِسَانِي إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ يُصَلِّي وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ بِصَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ بِصَلَاةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَاعِدٌ قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللهِ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَلَا أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ مَا حَدَّثَتْنِي بِهِ عَائِشَةُ عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ هَاتِ فَعَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَدِيثَهَا فَمَا أَنْكَرَ مِنْه شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَسَمَّتْ لَكَ الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعَ الْعَبَّاسِ؟ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ هُوَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ

"عَنْ سَالِم بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ - وَكَانَ رَجُلًا مِن أهْلِ الصُّفَّةِ - قَالَ: أُغْمِىَ عَلَى رَسُولِ الله ﷺ فِى مَرَضِه فَأَفَاقَ فَقَالَ: حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ, فَقَالَ: مُرُوا بِلاَلًا فَلْيُؤَذِّن، وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ، ثُمَ أُغْمِىَ عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَت عَائِشَةُ: إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ أَسِيفٌ، فَقَالَ: إنَّكُنَّ صَوَاحِبُ يُوسُفَ، مُروا بِلالًا فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ،

وَمُرُوا أبا بَكْرٍ فَليُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ، فَأُقِيمَت الصَّلَاةُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ : أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: ادْعُوا لِى إِنْسَانًا أَعْتَمِدُ عَلَيْهِ، فَجَاءَتْ بَرِيرَةُ وآخَرُ مَعَهَا، فَاعْتَمَدَ عَلَيْهِمَا، وَإِنَّ رِجْلَاهُ لَتَخُطَّانِ في الأَرْضِ حَتَّى أتَى أبا بَكْرٍ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّى بالنَّاسِ فَجَلَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ، فَذَهَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَتَأَخَّرُ، فَحَبَسَهُ حَتَّى فَرغَ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ، فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّىَ نَبِىُّ الله ﷺ قَالَ عُمَرُ: مَنْ يَتَكَلَّم بِمَوْتِهِ لأَضْرِبَنَّهُ بِسَيْفِى هَذَا، فَأَخَذَ بسَاعدِ أَبِى بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ أقْبَلَ يَمْشِى حَتَّى دَخَلَ، فَأوْسَعُوا لَهُ حَتَّى دَنَا مِنْ نَبِىِّ الله ﷺ فَانْكَبَّ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى كَادَ يَمَسُّ وَجْهُهُ وَجْهَهُ، حَتَّى اسْتَبَانَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ قَدْ تُوُفِّى، فَقَالَ: {إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُمْ مَيِّتُونَ} فَقَالُوا: يَا صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ تُوُفِّى رَسُولُ الله ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَعَلِمُوا أنَّهُ كمَا قَالَ، فَقَالُوا: يَا صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ الله: بَيِّنْ لَنَا كَيْفَ نُصَلِّى عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ: يَجِئُ قَوْمٌ فَيُصَلُّونَ، وَيَجِئُ آخَرُونَ، قَالُوا: يَا صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ الله: هَلْ يُدْفَنُ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ ؟ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالُوا: وَأَيْنَ؟ قَالَ: حَيْثُ قَبَضَ الله رُوحَهُ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْبَضْ رُوحَهُ إِلَّا في مَكَانٍ طَيِّبٍ، فَعَلِمُوا أَنَّهُ كَمَا قَالَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: دُونَكُمْ صَاحِبَكُمْ، وَخَرَجَ أبُو بَكْرٍ، وَاجتَمَعَ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ يَبْكُونَ وَيَتَدَابَرُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ، فَقَالُوا: انْطَلِقُوا بِنَا إِلَى إِخْوَانِنَا مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ، فَإِنَّ لَهُمْ فِى هَذَا الْحَقِّ نَصِيبًا، فَأَتَوْهُمْ، فَقَالَتِ الأَنْصَارُ: مِنَّا أَمِيرٌ وَمِنْكُمْ أَمِيرٌ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ - وَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ أَبِى بَكْرٍ -: سَيْفَانِ في غِمْدٍ واحِدٍ لَا يَصْطلِحَانِ، أَوْ قَالَ: لَا يَصْلُحَونِ، وَأخَذَ بِيَدِ أَبِى بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ: مَنْ لَهُ هَذِهِ الثَّلَاثَةُ: إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ مَنْ صَاحِبُهُ إِذ هُمَا في الْغَارِ؟ مَنْ هُمَا؟ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ الله مَعَنَا، مَعَ مَنْ؟ ثمَّ بَسَطَ يَدَهُ فَبَايَعَهُ، ثُمَ قَالَ: بَايِعُوا؛ فَبَايَعَ النَّاسُ بِأَحْسَنِ بَيْعَةٍ وَأَجْمَلِهَا".
