40. Passing of the Prophet ﷺ
Interpretation and Tafsir of Surat al-Nasr
[Machine] About this verse, "When the victory of Allah and the conquest comes, and you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes" [Surah An-Nasr: 2], in what context was it revealed?
Some of them said, "Allah commanded His Prophet, ﷺ , that when he sees the people and their embracing of Islam and their firmness in the religion, he should praise and seek forgiveness from Allah." Umar said, "Are you not amazed by Ibn Abbas? O Ibn Abbas, why are you silent?" He said, "He taught me when it will occur." He said, "When the victory of Allah and the conquest comes, and you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes" [Surah An-Nasr: 1], then it is your sign of death." He said, "You spoke the truth, and by the One in whose hand is my soul, I have not learned from it except what you have mentioned."
40.2 Indications to the Prophet ﷺ that his time in this world is about to end
Mother of the Believers: We, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ were all sitting with the Prophet ﷺ and none of us had left when Fatima came walking, and by Allah, her gait was very similar to that of Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' When he saw her, he welcomed her, saying, "Welcome, O my daughter!" Then he made her sit on his right or his left, confided something to her, whereupon she wept bitterly. When he noticed her sorrow, he confided something else to her for the second time, and she started laughing. Only I from among the Prophet's wives said to her, "(O Fatima), Messenger of Allah ﷺ selected you from among us for the secret talk and still you weep?" When Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up (and went away), I asked her, "What did he confide to you?" She said, "I wouldn't disclose the secrets of Messenger of Allah ﷺ" But when he died I asked her, "I beseech you earnestly by what right I have on you, to tell me (that secret talk which the Prophet had with you)" She said, "As you ask me now, yes, (I will tell you)." She informed me, saying, "When he talked to me secretly the first time, he said that Gabriel used to review the Qur'an with him once every year. He added, 'But this year he reviewed it with me twice, and therefore I think that my time of death has approached. So, be afraid of Allah, and be patient, for I am the best predecessor for you (in the Hereafter).' " Fatima added, "So I wept as you (ʿAisha) witnessed. And when the Prophet ﷺ saw me in this sorrowful state, he confided the second secret to me saying, 'O Fatima! Will you not be pleased that you will be chief of all the believing women (or chief of the women of this nation i.e. my followers?") (Using translation from Bukhārī 6285)

40.3 Beginning of illness of Prophet ﷺ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from a funeral, and I had a headache. I said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, my head hurts." He replied, "Indeed, my head hurts as well." Then he said, "What harm would it do to you if you were to die before me? I would wash you, shroud you, perform the funeral prayer for you, and bury you." I said to him, "Because if you did that, I would return to my house and marry some of your wives." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, and then his illness, in which he died, began. Muhammad ibn Ahmad disputed this narration, while Muhammad ibn Salamah narrated it from Ibn Ishaq, from Ya'qub, from Al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah, from 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdullah.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to me one day from a funeral in Al-Baqi' and I had a headache. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, my head hurts!" He said, "Rather, it is my head that hurts, O Aisha." Then he said, "By Allah, it would not harm you if you were to die before me, for I would wash you, shroud you, pray upon you, and bury you." I said, "Indeed, if you were to do that, then I would return to my house and spend my bridal night with some of your wives." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, and then the pain that he had, which caused his death, began. Saleh bin Kaysan opposed him regarding this incident and it was narrated by Al-Zuhri from Urwah.
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me on the day he passed away, and I saw the signs of death on his face. I said, 'I wish this was happening to me while I am alive, and I would prepare you and bury you.' I said to him, 'Others may think that I am more deserving of this day to be happy with some of your women.' He said, 'And I saw the signs of death.'" Pray for me, your father and your brother, until I write a letter for Abu Bakr, for I fear that someone may say something and misinterpret it, and Allah and the believers do not accept anyone except Abu Bakr.
40.4 How the Prophet ﷺ used to treat himself during his Illness
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said about the illness in which he passed away, "Pour on me seven different kinds of perfumes that have not been mixed together, so that I may have the chance to give good advice to people." So we sat him down in a place of Hafsah's (house) where we kept pouring perfume on him until he motioned to us that we had done enough. Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (Anas bin Malik) differed with them and said, "I saw Abdullah bin Mubarak taking five or six handfuls of perfume.
When the ailment of the Prophet ﷺ became aggravated and his disease became severe, he asked his wives to permit him to be nursed (treated) in my house. So they gave him the permission. Then the Prophet came (to my house) with the support of two men, and his legs were dragging on the ground, between ʿAbbas, and another man." 'Ubaidullah (the sub narrator) said, "I informed ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbbas of what ʿAisha said. Ibn ʿAbbas said: 'Do you know who was the other man?' I replied in the negative. Ibn ʿAbbas said, 'He was ʿAli (bin Abi Talib)." ʿAisha further said, "When the Prophet ﷺ came to my house and his sickness became aggravated he ordered us to pour seven skins full of water on him, so that he might give some advice to the people. So he was seated in a Mikhdab (brass tub) belonging to Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet. Then, all of us started pouring water on him from the water skins till he beckoned to us to stop and that we have done (what he wanted us to do). After that he went out to the people." (Using translation from Bukhārī 198)
[Machine] About the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , it is said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt heavy and asked, 'Did people pray?' We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Bring me water in a basin.' So we did, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ablution. Then he went to relieve himself and fainted. When he regained consciousness, he asked, 'Did people pray?' We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Bring me water in a basin.' So we did, and he performed ablution. Then he went to relieve himself and fainted again. When he regained consciousness, he asked, 'Did people pray?' We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.' It is narrated that the people were standing in the mosque waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead them in the Isha prayer. She said, 'So the Messenger sent someone to Abu Bakr asking him to lead the people in prayer.' Abu Bakr, being a gentle man, said to Umar, 'You should lead the people in prayer.' Umar said to him, 'You are more deserving of that.' So Abu Bakr led the people in prayer during those days."
We poured medicine into the mouth of the Prophet ﷺ during his ailment. He said, "Don't pour medicine into my mouth." (We thought he said that) out of the aversion a patient usually has for medicines. When he improved and felt better he said, "There is none of you but will be forced to drink medicine, except Al-ʿAbbas, for he did not witness your deed." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6886)
40.5 What the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to read upon himself during his illness
Whenever Messenger of Allah ﷺ became sick, he would recite Mu'awwidhat (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An- Nas) and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite (these two Suras) and rub his hands over his body hoping for its blessings. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5016)
40.6 Intensity of the pain of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his illness
"I have not seen ailment effecting anyone worse than upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2397)
40.7 What the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do when he felt pain during his illness
[Machine] About the illness of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , she said, "He complained and he used to breathe heavily. We used to compare his breath to the breath of a person who had eaten raisins. He used to rotate between his wives. When his illness worsened, he sought permission from them to be treated by me and they would take turns nursing him. So, he was given permission, and he came to me while leaning on two legs, with one of them being the Abbas. I mentioned this to Ibn Abbas, and he said, 'Didn't the other part inform you?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'It was Ali.'"
When the last moment of the life of Messenger of Allah ﷺ came he started putting his 'Khamisa' on his face and when he felt hot and short of breath he took it off his face and said, "May Allah curse the Jews and Christians for they built the places of worship at the graves of their Prophets." The Prophet ﷺ was warning (Muslims) of what those had done. (Using translation from Bukhārī 435)
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came down, he found a cloth covering his face, so he removed it from his face and said, "May the curse of Allah be upon the Jews and Christians for they have taken the graves of their prophets as places of worship." He warned them against doing the same.
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came down, he woke up and threw a garment on his face. When he became alert, he uncovered his face and said, while doing so: "May Allah curse the Jews and Christians; they took the graves of their prophets as mosques." He warned his nation against what they did. This hadith was narrated by Al-Zuhri from Sa'id bin Al-Musayyib from Abu Hurayrah.
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'May Allah fight the Jews who made the graves of their prophets into places of worship.' Abu Abdur-Rahman (Ibn Zaid) disagreed with this view, and Qatadah narrated it from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, from Aisha."

40.8 What the Prophet ﷺ used to say during his illness
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to advise at the time of his death to "pray and take care of what your right hands possess." Abu Abdur-Rahman Sulaiman Al-Taimi said that he did not hear this hadith from Anas.
[Machine] "Most of the testament of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was about prayer and what your right hands possess." And Al-Mu'tamir bin Sulaiman Al-Taymi narrated from his father, from Qatadah, from his companion, from Anas, "Halal bin Al-Ala' told me that Al-Khattabi told us that Al-Mu'tamir told us that he heard from his father, from Qatadah, from his companion, from Anas, similar to it. Abu Awana contradicted him and narrated it from Qatadah, from Safinah."
[Machine] The general advice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was "prayer and what your right hands possess." He would keep repeating it until it became overwhelming in his chest, and Sa'id bin Abi Arubah narrated it from Qatadah from Safinah from Umm Salamah.
[Machine] The general testament of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the time of his death was "prayer and what your right hands possess." He repeated it frequently and it overflowed from his chest and was on the tip of his tongue. Abu Abdur Rahman Qatadah said that he did not hear it directly from Safinah. Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak reported to us, he said: Yunus narrated to us, he said: Shayban narrated to us, from Qatadah, he said: I was informed by Safinah, the freed slave of Umm Salamah, that he used to say this was the general testament of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Hamam narrated it from Qatadah, from Abu al-Khalil, from Safinah.
[Machine] "That the Prophet, ﷺ , while he was on his deathbed, started saying, 'Prayer and what your right hands possess.' He kept saying it until he was unable to continue. Abu Abdur Rahman and Abu Al-Khaleel, whose name is Saleh ibn Abu Maryam, said."
“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was dying, and there was a bowl of water next to him. He put his hand in the vessel and wiped his face with the water, and said: ‘O Allah, help me to bear the agonies of death.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1623)
40.9 What the Prophet ﷺ said as he passed away, may my father and mother be sacrificed for him
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , returned on that day and lay down in my chamber. A man from the family of Abu Bakr entered, holding a green tooth stick (miswak) in his hand. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , looked at it with a look that I understood he wanted it. So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, would you like me to give you this miswak?" He said, "Yes." So I took it and softened it for him, then I gave it to him. He held it for a longer time than I had ever seen him hold a miswak before, then he placed it down. I noticed that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , seemed heavy in my chamber, so I went to look at his face, and then I saw his gaze was fixed, and he was saying, "Rather, the highest companion in Paradise." I said, "You have been given a choice, and you have chosen, by the One who sent you with the truth!" And then the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , passed away.
I heard that never a prophet dies until he is given an option to opt the life of (this) world or that of the Hereafter. She further said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in his last illness in which he' died. I heard him saying in gruffness of the voice: Along with those persons upon whom Allah bestowed favours from amongst the Apostles, the testifiers of truth, the martyrs, the pious and goodly company are they (iv. 69). (It was on bearing these words) that I thought that he had been given choice (and he opted to live with these pious persons in the Paradise). (Using translation from Muslim 2444c)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ fainted while he was in my chamber, so I started to wipe his face and pray for his recovery. Then he woke up and said, "Rather, I ask Allah for the highest companion, the most blessed with Jibril, Mika'il, and Israfil."
I heard the Prophet ﷺ , who was resting against me, saying, "O Allah! Excuse me and bestow Your Mercy on me and let me join with the highest companions (in Paradise)." See Qur'an (4.69) (Using translation from Bukhārī 5674)
"The Messenger of Allah died while he was between my chest and my chin, and I never disliked the agony of death for anyone after I saw the Messenger of Allah." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1830)
[Machine] "The last time I looked at the Prophet ﷺ , he complained and ordered Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. While we were praying Dhuhr, the Prophet ﷺ uncovered the screen of Aisha's chamber with his hand and looked at the people. I looked at his face as if it were the page of a Qur'an."
40.10 What promises the Prophet Messenger of Allah ﷺ made with the people
[Machine] Um Salama said, "By the One whom Um Salama swears by, Ali was the closest person to the Messenger of Allah. When the Messenger of Allah passed away in the morning, the Messenger of Allah sent for him. It seemed to me that he had been sent for due to a need. He kept asking, 'Has Ali come?' three times until Ali came before the sun rose. When he came, we knew that he had a need from him. We left the house and returned to the Messenger of Allah that day at Aisha's house. I was the last one to leave the house, then I sat closest to the door. Ali entered and he was the last person to make a promise with the Messenger of Allah. He leaned towards him and whispered to him."

"The last time I saw the Messenger of Allah, he drew back the curtain when the people were in rows behind Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him. Abu Bakr wanted to step back, but he gestured to them to stay as they were, and let the curtain drop. He died at the end of that day, and that was a Monday." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1831)

the Messenger of Allah was shrouded in three white Yemeni garments of cotton, among which was no shirt and no turban. It was mentioned to 'Aishah that they said: "He was buried in two garments and a Burd made of Hibrah." She said: "A Burd was brought, but they sent it back and did not shroud him in it." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1899)

40.16 How the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was prayed upon ˹for his janāzah˺
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ fainted during his illness and then woke up and asked, "Has the prayer been established?" They replied, "Yes." He said, "Tell Bilal to give the call to prayer and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Then he fainted again and woke up asking, "Has the prayer been established?" We said, "Yes." He said, "Tell Bilal to give the call to prayer and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Aisha said, "My father is a soft-hearted man, you should tell the women of Yusuf to tell Bilal to give the call to prayer and Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." So Bilal was ordered to give the call to prayer and Abu Bakr was ordered to lead the people in prayer. When the prayer was finished, the Prophet ﷺ asked, "Has the prayer been established?" We said, "Yes." He said, "Call a man for me whom I can depend upon." Barirah and another woman came and he leaned on them for support. Abu Bakr started praying and the Prophet ﷺ sat next to him. Abu Bakr tried to step back but the Prophet ﷺ held him until he finished the prayer. When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Umar said, "No one should speak about his death, whoever does, I will strike him with my sword." So they all kept silent. The people were illiterate and there was no Prophet before him. They said to Salim, "Go to the companion of the Prophet ﷺ and ask him." I went out and found Abu Bakr standing in the mosque. He asked, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ die?" I said, "Umar said that no one should speak about his death, whoever does, he will strike him with his sword." Then Abu Bakr placed his hand on my shoulder and started walking until he entered (the room). He stretched out on the Prophet ﷺ almost touching his face. Then he realized that he had died. Abu Bakr recited, "You are dead and they are dead" [Az-Zumar: 30]. They said, "Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ die?" He said, "Yes." They said, "Shall we pray for the Prophet ﷺ?" He said, "Yes." They said, "How should we pray for him?" He said, "A group should enter and say takbir and make supplication, then leave and another group should come." They said, "Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, will the Prophet ﷺ be buried?" He said, "Yes." They asked, "Where will he be buried?" He said, "In the place where Allah took his soul, for He did not take his soul except in a good place." They knew that what he said was true. Then Abu Bakr said, "Your companion is with you." Abu Bakr left and the Muhajirun gathered and began to consult with each other. Then they said, "Go to our brothers from the Ansar, they have a share in this matter." So they went to the Ansar and they said, "Some of us are leaders and some of you are leaders." Umar said, "There cannot be two swords in one sheath." Then Abu Bakr took the hand of Abu Bakr and said, "Who are these three people?" "When he said to his companion" [At-Tawba: 40] Who is his companion? "When they were in the cave" [At-Tawba: 40] Who were they? "Do not be sad, Allah is with us" [At-Tawba: 40] With whom? Then he pledged allegiance to him and said, "Pledge allegiance, the people have pledged allegiance in the best way and the best is with them."

40.17 How the Prophet ﷺ was buried
[Machine] "Unleash your attacks against me as it was done to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abdul Malik ibn Amr challenged him."
"Make a niche for me in the side of the grave and set up (bricks) over me as was done for the Messenger of Allah." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2007)
40.18 Place of burial of the Prophet ﷺ
[Machine] When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, they said, "O Salim, go to the companion of the Prophet ﷺ and inform him." So, I went and found Abu Bakr standing in the mosque. He placed his hand on my shoulder and walked until he entered (the room). They made way for him until he reached the Prophet ﷺ and kissed him until he knew that he had died. Abu Bakr said, "Indeed, you are dead, and indeed, they are dead" [Al-Zumar 30]. They said, "O companion of the Prophet ﷺ , will the Prophet ﷺ be buried?" He said, "Yes." They said, "And where will he be buried?" He said, "In the place where Allah took his soul, for indeed, He only took his soul in a blessed place." They knew that what he said was true.

40.19 What was placed under the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
"When the Messenger of Allah was buried, a red velvet cloak was placed beneath him." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2012)
