HAKIM 6825:
from ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAwf —
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ took me by the hand, and I went with him to Ibrahim, his son, who was playing by himself. The Prophet ﷺ took him into his room and kept him there until his soul departed. He then placed him down and cried. I said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, you cry even though you have forbidden crying?" He said, "I have not forbidden crying, but I have forbidden two foolish and sinful voices: a voice produced during idle entertainment, play, and the devil's flutes, and a voice produced during a calamity that involves striking faces and tearing garments. This is mercy, and whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy. If it were not for the fact that it is a true promise and a true saying, and that the first will join the latter, we would have been more sorrowful for you than this. Indeed, O Ibrahim, our eyes shed tears, our hearts grieve, but we do not say anything that angers the Lord." (This part has been excluded by Al-Dhahabi in his summary.)
