[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ heard Umar saying, "By my father." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. If one of you must swear, then let him swear by Allah or remain silent." Umar said, "I haven't sworn by my father after that, nor have I preferred it."  

أحمد:٤٥٢٣ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمٍعَنْ أَبِيهِ

From his father (Ibn 'Umar) that the Prophet ﷺ heard 'Umar saying: "By my father, By my father!" So he said: "Verily Allah prohibits you from swearing by your father." So 'Umar said: "By Allah I did not swear by him after that, neither intentionally nor in narrating."  

الترمذي:١٥٣٣ – حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard him swearing by his father. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah forbids you from making oaths by your forefathers." 'Umar said: I never took an oath by them (i.e., my forefathers) myself nor narrating such words from anyone else.”  

ابن ماجة:٢٠٩٤ – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْعَدَنِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ

malik:22-16 – Yaḥyá > Mālik > Nāfiʿ > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that one time the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was speaking to Umar ibn al-Khattab while he was travelling with a troop and Umar swore by his father and he (the Messenger) said, "Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers. If anyone swears, let him swear by Allah or keep silent."  

مالك:٢٢-١٦ – حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَدْرَكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رضى الله عنه وَهُوَ يَسِيرُ فِي رَكْبٍ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللَّهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard me swearing an oath by my father and said: “Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers.” ‘Umar said: By Allah, I never swore by my father after that, whether saying it myself or narrating what someone else had said. (Using translation from Aḥmad 241)   

أحمد:٤٥٤٨ – حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ سَمِعَ سَالِمًا عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سَمِعَ عُمَرَ وَهُوَيَقُولُ وَأَبِي وَأَبِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللهِ فَوَاللهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا ذَاكِرًا وَلَا آثِرًا  

ahmad:4593 – Sufyān > Ismāʿīl b. Umayyah > Nāfiʿ

[Machine] Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ encountered Umar during one of his journeys and heard him saying, "And my father, and my father." So he said, "Verily, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. So whoever swears, let him swear by Allah, and whoever does not, then let him remain silent."

darimi:2386 – al-Ḥakam b. al-Mubārak > Mālik b. Anas > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

Messenger of Allah ﷺ met ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab while the latter was going with a group of camel-riders, and he was swearing by his father. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Lo! Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers, so whoever has to take an oath, he should swear by Allah or keep quiet." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6646)  

الدارمي:٢٣٨٦ – أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَدْرَكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ يَسِيرُ فِي رَكْبٍ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللَّهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ»

ibnhibban:4360 – al-Ḥusayn b. Idrīs al-Anṣārī > Aḥmad b. Abū Bakr > Mālik > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

Messenger of Allah ﷺ met ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab while the latter was going with a group of camel-riders, and he was swearing by his father. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Lo! ذِكْرُ الزَّجْرِ عَنْ أَنْ يَحْلِفَ الْمَرْءُ بِأَبِيهِ، أَوْ بِشَيْءٍ غَيْرِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ وَعَلَا

ibnhibban:4361 – al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān > Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh b. Numayr from my father > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ found 'Umar al-Khattab in a caravan while he was swearing by his father. So he said: Allah forbids you to swear by forefathers. If anyone swears, he must swear by Allah or keep silence. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3249)   

ابن حبّان:٤٣٦١ – أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

أَدْرَكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَلْيَحْلِفْ حَالَفٌ بِاللَّهِ أَوْ لِيَسْكُتْ»  

tabarani:13179 – ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Salm al-Rāzī > Sahl b. ʿUthmān > Junādah b. Salm > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar > Sālim > Ibn ʿUmar

[Machine] While Umar ibn al-Khattab was walking in a caravan, he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ swearing by his father. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Indeed, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. So whoever swears, let him swear by Allah or remain silent."  

الطبراني:١٣١٧٩ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَلْمٍ الرَّازِيُّ ثنا سَهْلُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ ثنا جُنَادَةُ بْنُ سَلْمٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

بَيْنَمَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ يَسِيرُ فِي رَكْبٍ فَسَمِعَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَمَنْ حَلَفَ فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ»

البيهقي:١٩٨٢٠ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُحَمِّشٍ الْفَقِيهُ أنبأ أَبُو حَامِدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْبَزَّازُ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ الْمَكِّيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سَمِعَ عُمَرَ ؓ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ وَأَبِي وَأَبِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهِ ذَاكِرًا وَلَا آثِرًا

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ heard Umar swearing an oath by his father, and he said, "Verily, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers." Umar said, "By Allah, I will never swear by it again, either remembering or forgetting."  

البيهقي:١٩٨٢١ – وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ الْأَصَمُّ أنبأ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ أنبأ الشَّافِعِيُّ أنبأ سُفْيَانُ ثنا الزُّهْرِيُّ أَخْبَرَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَغَيْرِهِ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ وَأَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فَقَالَ وَقَالَ ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ فَذَكَرَهُ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met Umar during one of his journeys, and he was saying: "And my father, and my father." So he said: "Verily, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. So whoever swears, let him swear by Allah, or be silent."  

البيهقي:١٩٨٢٤ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ أنبأ أَبُو حَامِدِ بْنُ بِلَالٍ الْبَزَّازُ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ الْمَكِّيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ؓ قَالَ

أَدْرَكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عُمَرَ وَهُوَ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ وَأَبِي وَأَبِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ

"عَنْ عُمَرَ قَالَ: سَمِعَنِى النَّبِىُّ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَحْلِفُ وَأَقُولُ: وَأَبِى؛ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الله يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ، قَالَ: فَمَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا ذَاكِرًا وَلاَ آثِرًا" (*).
