"عَنْ عُمَرَ قَالَ: سَمِعَنِى النَّبِىُّ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَحْلِفُ وَأَقُولُ: وَأَبِى؛ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الله يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ، قَالَ: فَمَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا ذَاكِرًا وَلاَ آثِرًا" (*).

Messenger of Allah ﷺ met ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab while the latter was going with a group of camel-riders, and he was swearing by his father. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Lo! Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers, so whoever has to take an oath, he should swear by Allah or keep quiet."
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَدْرَكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ وَهْوَ يَسِيرُ فِي رَكْبٍ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ أَلاَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ مَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللَّهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ
I heard ʿUmar saying, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers." ʿUmar said, "By Allah! Since I heard that from the Prophet ﷺ , I have not taken such an oath, neither intentionally, nor by reporting the oath of someone else."
لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا مُنْذُ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ ذَاكِرًا وَلاَ آثِرًا قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ {أَوْ أَثَرَةٍ مِنْ عِلْمٍ} يَأْثُرُ عِلْمًا
Allah, the Great and Majestic, forbids you to swear by your fathers. Umar said: By Allah. I have never sworn (by my father) since I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding it mentioning them" on my behalf" nor on behalf of someone else.
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا مُنْذُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْهَا ذَاكِرًا وَلاَ آثِرًا
'Abdullah (b. Umar) reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ found, Umar b. al-Khattab amongst the riders and he was taking oath by his father Messenger of Allah ﷺ called them (saying) ; Our Allah, the Exated and Majestic, has forbidden you that you take oath by your father. He who bag to take an oath, he must take it by Allah or keep quiet.
عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ أَدْرَكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ فِي رَكْبٍ وَعُمَرُ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَنَادَاهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَلاَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللَّهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ found 'Umar al-Khattab in a caravan while he was swearing by his father. So he said: Allah forbids you to swear by forefathers. If anyone swears, he must swear by Allah or keep silence.
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَدْرَكَهُ وَهُوَ فِي رَكْبٍ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللَّهِ أَوْ لِيَسْكُتْ
" 'Umar said: I swear by Allah, I never swore by it personally or reporting it from others."
سَمِعَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَحْوَ مَعْنَاهُ إِلَى بِآبَائِكُمْ زَادَ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَذَا ذَاكِرًا وَلاَ آثِرًا
From his father (Ibn 'Umar) that the Prophet ﷺ heard 'Umar saying: "By my father, By my father!" So he said: "Verily Allah prohibits you from swearing by your father." So 'Umar said: "By Allah I did not swear by him after that, neither intentionally nor in narrating."

That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came across 'Umar while he was on his mount, and he was swearing by his father. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Verily Allah prohibits you from swearing by your fathers. So let the one who swears, swear by Allah, or be silent."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ
"By my father and by my mother." He said: "Allah forbids you to swear by your forefathers." 'Umar said: "By Allah, I never swore by them again, whether saying it for myself or reporting it of others."

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, forbids you to swear by your fathers,ʿ 'Umar said: By Allah, I never swore by them since I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid it, and I never uttered (such words) whether I was swearing an oath or describing someone else doing so.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that one time the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was speaking to Umar ibn al-Khattab while he was travelling with a troop and Umar swore by his father and he (the Messenger) said, "Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers. If anyone swears, let him swear by Allah or keep silent."

[AI] While Umar ibn al-Khattab was walking in a caravan, he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ swearing by his father. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Indeed, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. So whoever swears, let him swear by Allah or remain silent."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَدْرَكَ عُمَرَ فِي رَكْبٍ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ حَالِفٌ يَحْلِفُ بِاللهِ أَوْ لِيَسْكُتْ»
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard me swearing an oath by my father and said: “Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers.” ‘Umar said: By Allah, I never swore by my father after that, whether saying it myself or narrating what someone else had said. (Using translation from Aḥmad 241)
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سَمِعَ عُمَرَ ؓ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ وَأَبِي وَأَبِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهِ ذَاكِرًا وَلَا آثِرًا
[AI] The Prophet ﷺ heard Umar swearing an oath by his father, and he said, "Verily, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers." Umar said, "By Allah, I will never swear by it again, either remembering or forgetting."
سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عُمَرَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ أَلَا إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ قَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ وَاللهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا بَعْدُ ذَاكِرًا وَلَا آثِرًا
that he found ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab in a group of people and he was swearing by his father. So Messenger of Allah ﷺ called them, saying, "Verily! Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers. If one has to take an oath, he should swear by Allah or otherwise keep quiet." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6108)
رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَدْرَكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ يَسِيرُ فِي رَكْبٍ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَلَا إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ مَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ
[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met Umar during one of his journeys, and he was saying: "And my father, and my father." So he said: "Verily, Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. So whoever swears, let him swear by Allah, or be silent."
أَدْرَكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عُمَرَ وَهُوَ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ وَأَبِي وَأَبِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ found 'Umar al-Khattab in a caravan while he was swearing by his father. So he said: Allah forbids you to swear by forefathers. If anyone swears, he must swear by Allah or keep silence. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3249)

"A man from Banu Ghifar told me, in the gathering of Salim bin 'Abdullah, Salim bin 'Abdullah said: 'I heard 'Abdullah -that is, Ibn 'Umar- say: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Allah forbids you to swear by your forefathers.'"'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3765)
