Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast till one would say that he would never stop fasting, and he would abandon fasting till one would say that he would never fast. I never saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasting for a whole month except the month of Ramadan, and did not see him fasting in any month more than in the month of Sha'ban.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يَصُومُ فَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اسْتَكْمَلَ صِيَامَ شَهْرٍ إِلاَّ رَمَضَانَ وَمَا رَأَيْتُهُ أَكْثَرَ صِيَامًا مِنْهُ فِي شَعْبَانَ

˹At times˺ the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast ˹so much continuously˺ that we said that he would not ˹stop fasting daily˺, and ˹at times˺ did not fast at all until we said that he would not fast ˹again˺. And I (ʿĀʾishah) did not see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ completely fast a month except for ˹the month of˺ Ramaḍān, and I did not see him fasting more in any other month than that of ˹the month of˺ Shaʿbān.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يَصُومُ۔ وَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اسْتَكْمَلَ صِيَامَ شَهْرٍ قَطُّ إِلاَّ رَمَضَانَ وَمَا رَأَيْتُهُ فِي شَهْرٍ أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُ صِيَامًا فِي شَعْبَانَ۔

I asked 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: He used to observe fast (at times so continuously) that we said: He has fasted (never to break), and he did not observe fast till we said: He has given up perhaps never to fast, and I never saw him observing (voluntary fasts) more in any other month than that of Sha'ban. (lt appeared as if) he observed fast throughout the whole of Sha'ban except a few (days).

عَنْ صِيَامِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ قَدْ صَامَ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ قَدْ أَفْطَرَ وَلَمْ أَرَهُ صَائِمًا مِنْ شَهْرٍ قَطُّ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ صِيَامِهِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ كُلَّهُ كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً

I asked Sa'id b. Jubair about fasting during Rajab. He said: Ibn 'Abbas told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast to such an extent that we thought that he would never break his fast; and he would go without fasting to such an extent that we thought he would never fast.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يَصُومُ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast to such an extent that we thought that he would never break his fast, and he would go without fasting to such an extent that we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast a complete month except in Ramadan, and I never saw his fast more in any month than in Sha'ban.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يَصُومُ وَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اسْتَكْمَلَ صِيَامَ شَهْرٍ قَطُّ إِلاَّ رَمَضَانَ وَمَا رَأَيْتُهُ فِي شَهْرٍ أَكْثَرَ صِيَامًا مِنْهُ فِي شَعْبَانَ

"The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said: 'He will not fast.' And he used to fast Shaban, or most of Shaban."' '

عَنْ صِيَامِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يَصُومُ وَكَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ أَوْ عَامَّةَ شَعْبَانَ

"I asked Aishah: 'Tell me about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah.' She said: 'he used to fast until we said: he is going to fast until we said: He is not going to fast. He never fasted any month more than Shaban. He used to fast (all) of Shaban except a little, he used to fast all of Shaban."' '

عَنْ صِيَامِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ قَدْ صَامَ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ قَدْ أَفْطَرَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَصُومُ شَهْرًا أَكْثَرَ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ كُلَّهُ

""I asked 'Aishah about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah. She said: 'The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said that he is going to fast (continually), and he used not to fast until we said: he is not going to fast. And he did not fast for a whole month from the time he came to Al-Madinah, apart from Ramadan."' '

"The Messenger of Allah would fast until we said he would not break his fast, and he would not fast until we said he does not want to fast. And he never fasted any month in full apart from Ramadan, from the time he came to Al-Madinah."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَصُومَ وَمَا صَامَ شَهْرًا مُتَتَابِعًا غَيْرَ رَمَضَانَ مُنْذُ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ

"The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said: 'He does not want to break his fast.' And he used not to fast until we said: 'He does not want to fast."'

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَصُومَ

"I asked 'Aishah about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah. She said: "The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said: He is going to (continue to) fast, and he used not to fast until we said: He is not going to, and he did not fast for a whole month from the time he came to Al-Madinah, apart from Ramadan."'

“I asked ‘Aishah about the fasting of the Prophet ﷺ. She said: ‘He used to fast until we thought he would always fast. And he used to not fast until we thought he would always not fast. I never saw him fast more in any month than in Sha’ban. He used to fast all of Sha’ban; he used to fast all of Sha’ban except a little.’”

عَنْ صِيَامِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ قَدْ صَامَ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ قَدْ أَفْطَرَ وَلَمْ أَرَهُ صَامَ مِنْ شَهْرٍ قَطُّ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ صِيَامِهِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ كُلَّهُ كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast until we thought he would never stop fasting. And he used to not fast until we thought we would never fast. And he never fasted any complete month apart from Ramadan, from the time he came to Al- Madinah.”

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لاَ يَصُومُ وَمَا صَامَ شَهْرًا مُتَتَابِعًا إِلاَّ رَمَضَانَ مُنْذُ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ

[AI] I have not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complete a month of fasting except for the month of Sha'ban. For he used to connect it with Ramadan so that they would be two consecutive months of fasting. He used to fast throughout the month, until we would say that he did not break his fast, and he would break his fast until we would say that he did not fast.

مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَامَ شَهْرًا تَامًّا إِلَّا شَعْبَانَ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَصِلُهُ بِرَمَضَانَ لِيَكُونَا شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ وَكَانَ يَصُومُ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast until we thought he would never stop fasting. And he used to not fast until we thought we would never fast. And he never fasted any complete month apart from Ramadan, from the time he came to Al- Madinah.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1711)

[AI] I asked Aisha, "How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast?" She said, "He used to fast so much that we would say he doesn't break his fast, and he would break his fast so much that we would say he doesn't fast. I have never seen him fasting in any month more than he did in Sha'ban. He used to fast the whole month of Sha'ban, except for a few days."

سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ كَيْفَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ؟ قَالَتْ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ لَمْ أَرَهُ فِي شَهْرٍ أَكْثَرَ صِيَامًا مِنْهُ فِي شَعْبَانَ كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ كُلَّهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا بَلْ كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ كُلَّهُ

She said, "He used to fast until we would say that he would not break his fast, and he would break his fast until we would say that he would not fast. قُلْتُ أَيْ أُمَّهْ كَيْفَ كَانَ صِيَامُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَتْ كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ وَلَمْ أَرَهُ يَصُومُ مِنْ شَهْرٍ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ صِيَامِهِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ كَانَ يَصُومُ شَعْبَانَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا بَلْ كَانَ يَصُومُهُ كُلَّهُ

"U never saw the Messenger of Allah fast two consecutive months, but he used to join shaban to Ramadan." ' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2175)

مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَامَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَصِلُ شَعْبَانَ بِرَمَضَانَ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'n Nadr, the mawla of Umar ibn Ubaydullah, from Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast for so long that we thought he would never stop fasting, and he would go without fasting for so long that we thought he would never fast again. I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast for a complete month except for Ramadan, and I never saw him do more fasting in any one month than he did in Shaban.'

[AI] Regarding the fasting of the Prophet ﷺ , she said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to fast until we would say he would not break his fast, and then he would break his fast until we would say he did not fast. [AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to fast until it was said he would not break his fast, and he would break his fast until it was said he would not fast. And he used to observe the most fasting in the month of Sha'ban.

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ لَا يَصُومُ وَكَانَ أَكْثَرُ صَوْمِهِ فِي شَعْبَانَ

[AI] "Aisha and Umm Salamah said: The Prophet ﷺ would not fast for a whole month except for Ramadan, except that he used to join it with Shaban so it would be two consecutive months. He used to fast the entire month until we would say, 'He does not break his fast,' and he would break his fast until we would say, 'He does not fast.'"

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ وَأُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتَا «مَا كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَصُومُ شَهْرًا سِوَى رَمَضَانَ إِلَّا شَعْبَانَ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَصِلُهُ بِرَمَضَانَ فَيَكُونُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ وَكَانَ يَصُومُ الشَّهْرَ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ»

"The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we said: 'He will not fast.' And he used to fast Shaban, or most of Shaban."' ' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2177)

"I asked 'Aishah about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah. «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ وَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ اسْتَكْمَلَ صِيَامَ شَهْرٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا رَمَضَانَ وَمَا رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِي شَهْرٍ أَكْثَرَ صِيَامًا مِنْهُ فِي شَعْبَانَ»

"I asked Aishah: 'Tell me about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah.' She said: 'he used to fast until we said: he is going to fast until we said: He is not going to fast. He never fasted any month more than Shaban. He used to fast (all) of Shaban except a little, he used to fast all of Shaban."' ' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2179)
