Giving up what you prefer to please your parents

[Machine] I entered upon Umm Imama, the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and she said, "I was once pouring water onto his (the Prophet's) hands while he was performing ablution when a man entered and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I want to return to my family, so give me some advice that I can hold on to.' He (the Prophet) said, 'Do not associate anything with Allah, even if you are cut into pieces and burned in fire. Do not disobey your parents, even if they command you to leave your family and worldly possessions behind, so obey them and do not neglect intentionally performing prayers, for whoever intentionally neglects it has no guarantee from Allah the Almighty or from His Messenger ﷺ . Do not consume alcohol, as it is the root of every sin. Do not exceed limits in your boundaries, for you will come on the Day of Resurrection with the weight of seven earths on your neck. Do not flee on the day of battle, for whoever flees on that day has earned the wrath of Allah, and his abode will be Hellfire, and what an evil destination it is. Spend on your family according to your means, and do not raise your stick (to harm them) and hide them from Allah the Almighty.'" According to the transmitted chain.  

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أُمَيْمَةَ مَوْلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ كُنْتُ يَوْمًا أُفْرِغُ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ وَهُوَ يَتَوَضَّأُ إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ الرُّجُوعَ إِلَى أَهْلِي فَأَوْصِنِي بِوَصِيَّةٍ أَحْفَظْهَا فَقَالَ «لَا تُشْرِكَنَّ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَإِنْ قُطِّعْتَ وَحُرِّقْتَ بِالنَّارِ وَلَا تَعْصِيَنَّ وَالِدَيْكَ وَإِنْ أَمَرَاكَ أَنْ تُخَلِّيَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ وَدُنْيَاكَ فَتَخَلَّ وَلَا تَتْرُكْ صَلَاةً مُتَعَمِّدًا فَمَنْ تَرَكَهَا مُتَعَمِّدًا بَرِئَتْ مِنْهُ ذِمَّةُ اللَّهِ ﷻ وَذِمَّةُ رَسُولِهِ ﷺ وَلَا تَشْرَبَنَّ الْخَمْرَ فَإِنَّهَا رَأْسُ كُلِّ خَطِيئَةٍ وَلَا تَزْدَدْ فِي تُخُومٍ فَإِنَّكَ تَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَعَلَى عُنُقِكَ مِقْدَارُ سَبْعِ أَرَضِينَ وَلَا تَفِرَّنَّ يَوْمَ الزَّحْفِ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ فَرَّ يَوْمَ الزَّحْفِ فَقَدْ بَاءَ بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَمَأْوَاهُ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ وَأَنْفِقْ عَلَى أَهْلِكَ مِنْ طَوْلِكَ وَلَا تَرْفَعْ عَصَاكَ عَنْهُمْ وَأَخِفْهُمْ فِي اللَّهِ ﷻ»  

[Machine] Umamah, the maidservant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , said, "I used to watch the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform ablution. A man entered and said, 'Advise me.' He replied, 'Do not associate anything with Allah, even if you are cut to pieces or burned in fire. And do not disobey your parents, even if they order you to abandon your family and possessions. And do not drink alcohol, for it is the root of all evil. And do not purposely abandon prayer, for whoever does so will have the protection of Allah and His Messenger lifted from them. And do not flee from battle, for whoever does so will earn the anger of Allah and their refuge will be Hellfire. And do not exceed the limits of your own land, for whoever does so will bear the burden on the Day of Judgment equivalent to the size of seven earths. And spend on your family from your surplus, and do not withhold your support from them, relying on Allah.'"  

عَنْ أُمَيْمَةَ مَوْلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ كُنْتُ أَصُبُّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وُضُوءَهُ فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ أَوْصِنِي فَقَالَ «لَا تُشْرِكْ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا وَإِنْ قُطِّعْتَ وَحُرِّقْتَ بِالنَّارِ وَلَا تَعْصِيَنَّ وَالِدَيْكَ وَإِنْ أَمَرَاكَ أَنْ تُخَلِّي عَنْ أَهْلِكَ وَدُنْيَاكَ فَتُخَلِّهِ وَلَا تَشْرَبَنَّ خَمْرًا فَإِنَّهَا رَأْسُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ وَلَا تَتْرُكَنَّ صَلَاةً مُتَعَمِّدًا فَمَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ بَرِئَتْ مِنْهُ ذِمَّةُ اللهِ وَذِمَّةُ رَسُولِهِ وَلَا تَفِرَّنَّ يَوْمَ الزَّحْفِ فَمَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ بَاءَ بِسَخَطٍ مِنَ اللهِ وَمَأْوَاهُ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ وَلَا تَزْدَادَنَّ فِي تُخُومِ أَرْضِكَ فَمَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ يَأْتِي بِهِ عَلَى رَقَبَتِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ مِقْدَارِ سَبْعِ أَرَضِينَ وَأَنْفِقْ عَلَى أَهْلِكَ مِنْ طَوْلِكَ وَلَا تَرْفَعْ عَصَاكَ عَنْهُمْ وَأَخِفْهُمْ فِي اللهِ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advised some members of his household: Do not associate partners with Allah, even if you are tortured or burned. Obey your parents, even if they order you to leave everything behind. And do not intentionally neglect prayer, as whoever intentionally abandons prayer has severed their relationship with Allah. Beware of alcohol, as it is the key to all evil. And beware of sinning, as it angers Allah. Do not get involved in matters that do not concern you, and if you find yourself in the midst of a deadly situation, remain steadfast. Spend on your family from your wealth and do not withhold your support from them. Protect them with the fear of Allah.  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْصَى بَعْضَ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِاللهِ وَإِنْ عُذِّبْتَ وَإِنْ حُرِّقْتَ وَأَطِعْ وَالِدَيْكَ وَإِنْ أَمَرَاكَ أَنْ تَخْرُجَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَاخْرُجْ وَلَا تَتْرُكِ الصَّلَاةَ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ تَرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَقَدْ بَرِئَتْ مِنْهُ ذِمَّةُ اللهِ إِيَّاكَ وَالْخَمْرَ فَإِنَّهَا مِفْتَاحُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ وَإِيَّاكَ وَالْمَعْصِيَةَ فَإِنَّهَا لَسُخْطُ اللهِ لَا تُنَازِعَنَّ الْأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَإِنْ رَأَيْتَ أَنَّ لَكَ وَلَا تَفِرَّ مِنَ الزَّحْفِ وَإِنْ أَصَابَ النَّاسَ مَوْتَانِ وَأَنْتَ فِيهِمْ فَاثْبُتْ أَنْفِقْ عَلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتِكَ مِنْ طَوْلِكَ وَلَا تَرْفَعْ عَصَاكَ عَنْهُمْ وَأَخِفْهُمْ فِي اللهِ ﷻ  

"لَا تُشْرِك بِالله شَيئًا، وَإنْ عُذِّبْتَ وحُرِّقْتَ، وَأطِعْ وَالِدَيكَ، وَإنْ أَمَرَاكَ أنْ تَخْرُجَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيء هُوَ لَكَ فَأخْرُجْ مِنْهُ، وَلَا تَتْرُكْ صَلاةً مَكْتُوبةً عَمْدًا؛ فَإِنَّ مَنْ تَرَكَ الصَّلاةَ عَمْدًا، فَقَدْ بَرِئَتْ مِنْهُ ذِمَّةُ الله، وَإياكَ وَالْخَمرَ فَإِنَّهَا مِفْتَاحُ كلِّ شَرٍّ، وَإِيَاكَ وَالْمعصِيَةَ، فَإنَّهَا مُوجبَةٌ لِسُخْطِ الله، لَا تَغْلُلْ، وَلَا تَفِرَّ يَوْمَ الزَّحْفِ وَإنْ هَلَكْتَ، وَقرْ أَصْحَابَكَ وَإنْ أصَابَ النَّاسَ مَوْتَانِ وَأنْتَ فِيهِمْ فَاثْبُتْ، وَلا تُنَازع الأمْرَ أهْلَهُ وَإنْ رَأَيتَ أَنَّهُ لَكَ، وَأَنْفِقْ مِنْ طَوْلِكَ عَلى أهْلِ بَيتِكَ، وَلَا تَرْفَعْ عَصَاكَ عَنْهُمْ أَدبًا، وَأخفْهُمْ في الله ﷻ".  

"لَا تُشْرِكْ بِالله -تَعالى- شَيئًا، وَإِنْ قُطعْتَ وَحُرِّقتَ بِالنَّارِ، وَلَا تَعْصِيَنَّ وَالِدَيْكَ وإنْ أمَرَاكَ أَنْ تخَلَّى مِنْ أهْلِكَ وَدُنيَاكَ فَتَخَلَّه، وَلَا تَشْرَبَنَّ خَمْرًا، فَإِنَّهَا رَأسُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ، وَلَا تَتْرُكَنَّ الصَّلاةَ مُتَعَمِّدًا، فَمَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِك بَرِئَتْ مِنْهُ ذمَّةُ الله وَذِمَّةُ رَسُولِه، وَلَا تَفِرَّنَّ يَوْمَ الزَّحْفِ، فَمَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ بَاءَ بِسُخْطٍ مِنَ الله، وَمَأوَاهُ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ، وَلَا تَزْدَادَنَّ في تُخُومِ أَرْضِكِ، فَمَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ يَأتِي بِهَا عَلَى رَقَبَتِهِ يَوْمَ القِيَامَة مِنْ مِقْدَارِ سَبْعِ أرَضينَ، وَأنْفِقْ عَلَى أهْلِكَ مِنْ طَوْلِكَ، وَلَا تَرْفَعْ عَصَاكَ عَنْهُمْ، وَأَخفْهُمْ في الله ﷻ".  

"عَنْ أَبِى الدَّرْداءِ قَالَ أَوْصَانِى خَلِيلِي أَبُو القَاسِمِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَنْفِقْ مِنْ طَوْلِكَ عَلى أَهْلِكَ وَلَا تَرْفَعْ عَصَاكَ عَنْهُمْ، أَخِفْهُمْ لله تعالى".
