Supplication for the morning, evening, and bedtime

abudawud:5067Musaddad > Hushaym > Yaʿlā b. ʿAṭāʾ > ʿAmr b. ʿĀṣim > Abū Hurayrah

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ᴿᴬ said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, instruct me with words that I should say when I enter the morning and when I enter the evening. He said: "Say:

allāhumma ʿālima al-ghaybi wal-shahādah, fāṭira al-samāwāti wal-arḍ, rabba kulli shayʾin wa-malīkah, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā anta, aʿūdhu bika min sharri nafsī, wa-sharri al-shayṭāni wa-shirkih

(O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Lord of everything and its Sovereign, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of myself and from the evil of Satan and his shirk.)"

He said: "Say it when you enter the morning, when you enter the evening, and when you go to your bed."

What to say when waking up or when going to sleep

abudawud:5068Mūsā b. Ismāʿīl > Wuhayb > Suhayl > abīhi > Abī Hurayrah

from the Prophet ﷺ, that when he entered the morning he would say:

allāhumma bika aṣbaḥnā, wa-bika amsaynā, wa-bika naḥyā, wa-bika namūtu, wa-ilayka al-maṣīr

(O Allah, by You we enter the morning, by You we enter the evening, by You we live, by You we die, and to You is the resurrection.)

And when he entered the evening he would say:

allāhumma bika amsaynaā, wa-bika naḥyā, wa-bika namūtu, wa-ilayka al-nushūr

(O Allah, by You we enter the evening, by You we live, by You we die, and to You is the resurrection.)

Morning and evening declaration that frees from the Fire

abudawud:5069Aḥmad b. Ṣāliḥ > Muḥammad b. Abī Fudayk > ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-Majīd > Hishām b. al-Ghāz b. Rabīʿah > Makhūl al-Dimashqī > Anas b. Mālik

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: *"Whoever says when he reaches morning or evening:

allāhumma innī aṣbaḥtu ush-hiduka, wa-ush-hidu ḥamalata ʿarshik, wa-malāʾikatak, wa-jamīʿa khalqik, annaka anta allāhu lā ilāha illā anta, wa-anna muḥammadan ʿabduka wa-rasūluk

(O Allah, I have entered the morning calling You to witness, and calling the bearers of Your Throne, Your angels, and all Your creation to witness, that You are Allah, there is no god but You, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Your Messenger)

Allah will free a quarter of him from the Fire. Whoever says it twice, Allah will free half of him. Whoever says it three times, Allah will free three-quarters of him. If he says it four times, Allah will free him from the Fire."

The leading dua for seeking forgiveness (istighfār)

abudawud:5070Aḥmad b. Yūnus > Zuhayr > al-Walīd b. Thaʿlabah al-Ṭāʾī > Ibn Buraydah from his father

from the Prophet ﷺ who said: "If anyone says in the morning or in the evening: 'O Allah! You are my Lord; there is no god except You, You have created me, and I am Your servant and I hold on to Your covenant and promise as much as I can; I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done: I acknowledge Your favour upon me, and I acknowledge my sin. So pardon me, for none but You pardons sins,' and he dies during the daytime or during the night, he will enter Paradise."

abudawud:5071[Chain 1] Wahbb. Baqiyyah > Khālid [Chain 2] Muḥammad b. Qudāmah b. Aʿyan > Jarīr > al-Ḥasan b. ʿUbaydullāh > Ibrāhīm b. Sūwayd > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Yazīd > ʿAbdullāh

The Prophet ﷺ used to say when evening came:

aṣbaḥnā wa-aṣbaḥa al-mulku li-llāh, wal-ḥamdu li-llāh, lā ilāha illā allāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lah

(We have entered the evening, and the dominion has entered the evening belonging to Allah, and all praise is for Allah. There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner.)

In the narration of Jarir there is an addition, and as for Zubayd, he used to say: Ibrahim ibn Suwayd used to say:

aṣbaḥnā wa-aṣbaḥa al-mulku li-llāh, wal-ḥamdu li-llāh, lā ilāha illā allāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu al-mulku wa-lahu al-ḥamd, wa-huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr. rabbi asʾaluka khayra mā fī hādhā al-yawm, wa-khayra mā baʿdahu, wa-aʿūdhu bika min sharri mā fī hādhā al-yawm, wa-sharri mā baʿdahu.

(There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent. My Lord, I ask You for the good of this night and the good of what comes after it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what comes after it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and from the evil of old age or disbelief. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave.)

And when morning came, he would also say that: “We have entered the morning, and the dominion has entered the morning belonging to Allah.”

abudawud:5072Ḥafṣ b. ʿUmar > Shuʿbah > Abū ʿAqīl > Sābiq b. Nājiyah > Abū Salāam

AbuSallam told that he was in the mosque of Hims. A man passed him and the people said about him that he served the Prophet ﷺ. He (AbuSallam) went to him and said: Tell me any tradition which you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and there were no man between him and you. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: If anyone says in the morning and in the evening: "I am pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, with Muhammad as Prophet," Allah will certainly please him.

Morning and evening supplication of gratitude

abudawud:5073Aḥmad b. Ṣāliḥ > Yaḥyā b. Ḥassān > Ismāʿīl > Sulaymān b. Bilāl > Rabīʿah b. Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAnbasah > ʿAbdullāh b. Ghannām al-Bayāḍī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever says in the morning,

allāhumma mā aṣbaḥa bī min niʿmatin, aw bi-aḥadin min khalqik, fa-minka waḥdaka lā sharīka lak, fa-laka al-ḥamdu wa-laka al-shukr

(O Allah, whatever blessing I have awoken with is from You alone, with no partner. To You belongs all praise and to You belongs all thanks)

has fulfilled the thanks of his day. And whoever says the like of that in the evening has fulfilled the thanks of his night."

Morning and evening dua for well-being and protection

abudawud:5074Yaḥyā b. Mūsā al-Balkhī > Wakīʿ > ʿUbādah b. Muslim al-Fazārī > Jubayr b. Abī Sulaymān b. Jubayr b. Muṭʿim > Ibn ʿUmar ; ʿUthmān b. Abī Shaybah > Ibn Numayr > ʿUbādah b. Muslim al-Fazārī > Jubayr b. Abī Sulaymān b. Jubayr b. Muṭʿim > Ibn ʿUmar

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not leave these duas when evening came and when morning came:

allāhumma innī asʾaluka al-ʿafwa wal-ʿāfiyah, fī al-dunyā wal-ākhirah, allāhumma innī asʾaluka al-ʿafwa wal-ʿāfiyah, fī dīnī wa-dunyāya, wa-ahlī wa-mālī. allāhumma ustur ʿawratī / ʿawrātī, wa-āmin rawʿātī, wa-ḥfaẓnī min bayni yadayya, wa-min khalfī, wa-ʿan yamīnī, wa-ʿan shimālī, wa-min fawqī, wa-aʿūdhu bika an ughtāla min taḥtī

(O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly life, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my weakness". Uthman said: weaknesses. "and make safe my fears. O Allah, protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being taken unawares from beneath me.)

Abu Dawud said: Waki‘ said, ughtāl meaning the sinking of the earth.

Words of protection for morning and evening

abudawud:5075Aḥmad b. Ṣāliḥ > ʿAbdullāh b. Wahb > ʿAmr > Sālim al-Farrāʾ > ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd mawlā Banī Hāshim > ummuhu > bint al-Nabī ﷺ

[AI] that the Prophet ﷺ used to teach her, saying, "Say when you enter the morning: Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him. There is no power except by Allah. What Allah wills happens, and what He does not will does not happen. I know that Allah is powerful over all things and that Allah has encompassed all things in knowledge. Whoever says them in the morning will be protected until evening, and whoever says them in the evening will be protected until morning."

abudawud:5076[Chain 1] Aḥmad b. Saʿīd al-Hamdānī [Chain 2] al-Rabīʿ b. Sulaymān > Ibn Wahb > al-Layth > Saʿīd b. Bashīr al-Najjārī > Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman al-Baylamānī > al-Rabīʿ Ibn al-Baylamānī from his father > Ibn ʿAbbās > Rasūl Allāh ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ said: If anyone repeats in the morning: "So glory be to Allah in the evening and in the morning; to Him is the praise in the heavens and the earth, and in the late evening and at noon....thus shall you be brought forth, " he will get that day what he has missed; and if anyone repeats these words in the evening he will get that night what he has missed. Ar-Rabi' transmitted it from al-Layth.

abudawud:5077Mūsá b. Ismāʿīl > Ḥammād And Wuhayb > Suhayl from his father > Ibn Abū ʿĀʾish > Ḥammād > Abū ʿAyyāsh

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If anyone says in the morning: "There is no god but Allah alone Who has no partner; to Him belong the dominions, to Him praise is due, and He is Omnipotent," he will have a reward equivalent to that for setting free a slave from among the descendants of Isma'il. He will have ten good deeds recorded for him, ten evil deeds deducted from him, he will be advanced ten degrees, and will be guarded from the Devil till the evening. If he says them in the evening, he will have a similar recompense till the morning. The version of Hammad says: A man saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream and said: Messenger of Allah! AbuAyyash is relating such and such on your authority. He said: AbuAyyash has spoken the truth. Abu Dawud said: Isma'il b. Ja'far, Musa al-Zim'i and 'Adb Allah b. The Prophet ﷺ said: If anyone says in the morning: "O Allah! in the morning we call Thee, the bearers of Thy Throne, Thy angels, and all Thy creatures to witness that Thou art Allah than Whom there is no god, Thou being alone and without a partner, and that Muhammad is Thy servant and Thy Apostle," Allah will forgive him any sins that he commits that day; and if he repeats them in the evening. Allah will forgive him any sins he commits that night.

When you finish the sunset prayer, say: 'O Allah, protect me from Hell" seven times; for if you say that and die that night, protection from it would be recorded for you; and when you finish the dawn prayer, say it in a similar way, for if you die that day, protection from it would be recorded for you. AbuSa'id told me that al-Harith said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this to us secretly, so we confine it to our brethren.

A similar tradition (to No. 5061) has been transmitted by Muslim ibn al-Harith ibn Muslim at-Tamimi on the authority of his father from the Prophet ﷺ through a different chain of narrators, up to "protection from it". But this version says: "before speaking to anyone". In this version Ali ibn Sahl said that his father told him. Ali and Ibn al-Musaffa said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on an expedition. When we reached the place of attack, I galloped my horse and outstripped my companions, and the people of that locality received me with a great noise. I said to them: Say "There is no god but Allah," and you will be protected. They said this. My companions blamed me, saying: You deprived us of the booty. When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they told him what I had done. So he called me, appreciating what I had done, and said: Allah has recorded for you so and so (a reward) for every man of them. AbdurRahman said: I forgot the reward. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: I shall write a will for you after me. He did this and stamped it, and gave it to me, saying....He then mentioned the rest of the tradition to the same effect. Ibn al-Musaffa said: I heard al-Harith ibn Muslim ibn al-Harith at-Tamimi transmitting it from his father.

Allah will suffice him regarding whatever worries him, whether he says it truthfully or falsely.

We went out on a rainy night and in intense darkness, looking for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead us in prayer. We found him, and he said, "Have you prayed?" But I said nothing. Then he said, "Say." But I said nothing. Then he said, "Say." But I said nothing. Then he said, "Say." So I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what should I say?" He said, "Recite: "Say, He is Allah, One," and the Muawwidhatayn when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning three times; it will suffice you against everything."

abudawud:5083Muḥammad b. ʿAwf > Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl from my father

The people asked: Tell us a word which we repeat in the morning, evening and when we rise. So he commanded us to say: "O Allah! Creator of Heavens and Earth; Knower of all that is hidden and open; Thou art the Lord of everything; the angels testify that there is no god but Thee, for we seek refuge in Thee from the evil within ourselves, from the evil of the Devil accused and from the evil of his suggestion about partnership with Allah, and that we earn sin for ourselves or drag it to a Muslim."

abudawud:5084Abū Dāwud And Bihadhā al-Isnād

And through the same chain of transmitters the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When one rises in the morning, one should say: "We have reached the morning, and in the morning the dominion belongs to Allah, the Lord of the universe. O Allah! I ask Thee for the good this day contains, for conquest, victory, light, blessing and guidance during it; and I seek refuge in Thee from the evil it contains and the evil contained in what comes after it." In the evening he should say the equivalent.

She replied: You asked me about a thing which no one asked me before. When he woke up at night, he uttered: "Allah is Most Great" ten times, and uttered "Praise be to Allah" ten times, and said "Glory be to Allah and I begin with His praise" ten times, and said: "Glory be to the King, the Most Holy" ten times, and asked Allah's pardon ten times, and said: "There is no god but Allah" ten times, and then said: "O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee from the strait of the Day of resurrection," ten times. He then began the prayer.

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whoever says,

three times, no sudden affliction will befall him until morning; and whoever says it when morning comes, three times, no sudden affliction will befall him until evening.”

Then Aban ibn ‘Uthman was struck with paralysis, and the man who had heard the hadith from him began looking at him. So he said to him, “Why are you looking at me? By Allah, I did not lie against ‘Uthman, nor did ‘Uthman lie against the Prophet ﷺ ; but on the day when what befell me befell me, I became angry and forgot to say it.”

A similar tradition has been transmitted by Aban b. ‘Uthman, from ‘Uthman, from the prophet (May peace be upon him). This version does not mention the story of paralysis.

abudawud:5090al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm And Muḥammad b. al-Muthanná > ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAmr > ʿAbd al-Jalīl b. ʿAṭiyyah > Jaʿfar b. Maymūn > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū Bakrah

AbdurRahman ibn AbuBakrah said that he told his father: O my father! I hear you supplicating every morning: "O Allah! Grant me health in my body. O Allah! Grant me good hearing. O Allah! Grant me good eyesight. There is no god but Thou." You repeat them three times in the morning and three times in the evening. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ using these words as a supplication and I like to follow his practice. The transmitter, Abbas, said in this version: And you say: "O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee from infidelity and poverty. O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee from punishment in the grave. There is no god but Thee". You repeat them three times in the morning and three times in the evening, and use them as a supplication. I like to follow his practice. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The supplications to be used by one who is distressed are: "O Allah! Thy mercy is what I hope for. Do not abandon me to myself for an instant, but put all my affairs in good order for me. There is no god but Thou." Some transmitters added more than others.

if anyone says a hundred times in the morning: “Glory be to Allah, the Sublime, and I begin with praise of him”, and says likewise in the evening, no one from the creatures will bring anything like the one which he will bring.
