Ibn Muhayriz said: A man from Banu Kinanah, named al-Makhdaji, heard a person called AbuMuhammad in Syria, saying: The witr is a duty (wajib). Al-Makhdaji said: So I went to Ubadah ibn as-Samit and informed him. Ubadah said: AbuMuhammad told a lie. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: There are five prayers which Allah has prescribed on His servants. If anyone offers them, not losing any of them, and not treating them lightly, Allah guarantees that He will admit him to Paradise. If anyone does not offer them, Allah does not take any responsibility for such a person. He may either punish him or admit him to Paradise. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1420)

[Machine] Teach me, O Messenger of Allah, what to say in my Witr prayer when I raise my head and only Sujood remains (to be performed). O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, make me well among those whom You have made well, take care of me among those whom You have taken care of, bless me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil that You have decreed. Indeed, You decree and none can decree upon You. No one who You have befriended will be humiliated, and no one who You have opposed will be honored. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted are You. This wording is specific to Abu Bakr ibn Shaybah al-Hazami, and it has been narrated in the Qunut of the Fajr prayer after the Ruku'. It is what is recommended to rely upon, and the Qunut of Witr prayer is based on it by analogy.

If anyone performs ablution for them well, offers them at their (right) time, and observes perfectly their bowing and submissiveness in them, it is the guarantee of Allah that He will pardon him; if anyone does not do so, there is no guarantee for him on the part of Allah; He may pardon him if He wills, and punish him if He wills.

I used to sleep lying between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the qiblah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray when I (was lying) in front of him. When he wanted to offer the witr prayer - added by the narrator Uthman - he pinched me - then the narrators are agreed - and said: Set aside.

He them prostrated himself and placed his nose and forehead (on the ground); and kept his arms away from his side, and placed his palms (on the ground opposite his shoulders; he then raised his head that every bone returned to its proper place; (he then prostrated twice) until he finished this prostrations). Then he sat down and spread out his left foot, putting forward the front of his right foot towards the qiblah placing the palm of his right hand on his right knee, and the palm of his left hand on his left knee, and he pointed with his finger. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by Ibn al-Mubarak from Fulaih who heard ‘Abbas . Sahl narrating it; but I do not remember it. I think he made the mention of ‘Isa b. ‘Abd Allah who heard ‘Abbas b. Sahl saying: I accompanied Abu Humaid al-Sa’idi.

[Machine] I was in a gathering of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they were discussing his prayer. Abu Humaid then mentioned this hadith and said, "When he performed the Ruku', he would place his hands on his knees and spread his fingers, then he would straighten his back without raising or lowering his head, nor pressing his cheek against his shoulder." Abu Ali al-Rawdhbari informed us, who was informed by Abu Bakr ibn Dasah, who was informed by Abu Dawood, who was informed by Ahmed ibn Hanbal, who was informed by Abdul-Malik ibn Umar, who informed me Fuleih. Abbas bin Sahl told me: Abu Humaid, Abu Usaid, Sahl bin Saad and Muhammad ibn Muslim gathered together and they were discussing the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Abu Humaid said, "I will inform you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ," and then he mentioned the hadith. He then returned and placed his hands on his knees as if he was holding them, and he straightened his back, without raising or lowering his head, and did not press his cheek against his shoulder.

How would the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray during the night ? He replied: I spent a night with him when he was with Maimunah. He slept and awoke when half the night or one-third of it had passed. He stood up and went to a leather bad containing water. He performed ablution and I also performed ablution with him. He then stood up and I also stood at his left side. He made me stand at his right side. He then put his hand upon my head, as he was touching my ear and awakening me. He then prayed two light rak'ahs and recited Surah al-Fatihah in each of them, and uttered the salutation. He then prayed eleven rak'ahs observing the witr and slept. Then Bilal came to him and said: Prayer, Messenger of Allah. He got up and prayed two rak'ahs, and then led the people in the prayer.

[Machine] About the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he mentioned in a narration: "Then he stood up and I stood on his left side, and he placed me on his right side. He then placed his hands on my head and touched my ears as if he was waking me up. He then performed two light rak'ahs (units of prayer). I said, 'In each of them, he recited Surah Al-Qasas (Chapter 28) from the beginning to the end.' Then he said the tasleem (ending of the prayer) and performed two more rak'ahs. He repeated this until he prayed eleven rak'ahs of Witr prayer. Then he went to sleep until the time for Fajr (dawn) prayer came. I saw him blowing and Bilal came to him, saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, it is time for prayer.' So he stood up and performed two rak'ahs and prayed for the people without performing ablution." Aisha said: "There is no prophet whose eyes sleep but his heart is awake, and if his heart sleeps, his eyes awaken."
