[Machine] The Prophet of God ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah Almighty has extended the period for sighting the moon. So, if it is cloudy and you cannot see it, then complete the count (of days)."  

أحمد:٣٥١٥حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ قَالَ تَرَاءَيْنَا هِلَالَ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ بِذَاتِ عِرْقٍ فَأَرْسَلْنَا إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ نَسْأَلُهُ فَقَالَ

إِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ قَدْ مَدَّهُ لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, Allah has extended the time for sighting the moon. So if it is cloudy for you, then complete the prescribed number of days."  

البيهقي:٧٩٣٦أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُورَكٍ أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا شُعْبَةُ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْبَخْتَرِيِّ قَالَ أَهْلَلْنَا رَمَضَانَ وَنَحْنُ بِذَاتِ عِرْقٍ فَأَرْسَلْنَا رَجُلًا إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ يَسْأَلُهُ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ مَدَّهُ لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ  

أَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ غُنْدَرٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ وَرَوَاهُ عِكْرِمَةُ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حُنَيْنٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي إِكْمَالِ الْعِدَّةِ ثَلَاثِينَ بِمَعْنَاهُ وَرَوَاهُ غَيْرُ هَؤُلَاءِ أَيْضًا

muslim:1089bAbū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > Muʿtamir b. Sulaymān > Isḥāq b. Sūwayd And Khālid > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū Bakrah > Abū Bakrah > Nabī Allāh ﷺ

The months of 'Id are not incomplete. And in the hadith narrated by Khalid (the words are):" The months, of 'Id are Ramadan and Dhu'l-Hijja."  

مسلم:١٠٨٩bحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ وَخَالِدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ

أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ شَهْرَا عِيدٍ لاَ يَنْقُصَانِ فِي حَدِيثِ خَالِدٍ شَهْرَا عِيدٍ رَمَضَانُ وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ

We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey during the month of Ramadan. When the sun had sunk he said: So and so, get down (from your ride) and prepare the meal of parched barley for us. He said: Messenger of Allah, still (there is light of) day. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Get down and prepare meal of parched barley for us. So he got down and prepared the meal of parched barley and offered him, and the apostle of Allah ﷺ drank that (liquid meal). He then told with the gesture of his hand that when the sun sank from that side and the night appeared from that side, then the observer of the fast should break it.  

مسلم:١١٠١aوَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا هُشَيْمٌ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى ؓ قَالَ

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَالَ يَا فُلاَنُ انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلَيْكَ نَهَارًا قَالَ انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا قَالَ فَنَزَلَ فَجَدَحَ فَأَتَاهُ بِهِ فَشَرِبَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِيَدِهِ إِذَا غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا وَجَاءَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ

[Machine] "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey during the month of Ramadan. When the sun set, he said, 'Get down, O so-and-so, and prepare some food for us.' The person replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, it is still daytime.' He repeated, 'Get down and prepare some food.' So the person got down and prepared food and the Prophet drank. After drinking, he pointed with his hand towards the west and said, 'When the sun sets here, the night starts from here, and the fasting person breaks his fast.'"  

أحمد:١٩٣٩٥حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ أَخْبَرَنَا الشَّيْبَانِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى قَالَ

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَالَ انْزِلْ يَا فُلَانُ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ عَلَيْكَ نَهَارٌ قَالَ انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ قَالَ فَفَعَلَ فَنَاوَلَهُ فَشَرِبَ فَلَمَّا شَرِبَ أَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى الْمَغْرِبِ فَقَالَ إِذَا غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ هَاهُنَا جَاءَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَاهُنَا فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ

رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى وَأَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ

In this hadith transmitted by one of the narrators (neither these words are found): During the month of Ramadan." nor his statement:" And the night prevails from that side (the eastern side)." (These words are found in the narration of) Hushaim only.  

مسلم:١١٠١dوَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ كِلاَهُمَا عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ح وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِمَعْنَى حَدِيثِ ابْنِ مُسْهِرٍ وَعَبَّادٍ وَعَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ وَلَيْسَ فِي حَدِيثِ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَلاَ قَوْلُهُ وَجَاءَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا إِلاَّ فِي رِوَايَةِ هُشَيْمٍ وَحْدَهُ

You yourself observe the fasts uninterruptedly (but you forbid us to do so) Upon this he said: I am not like you; I am fed and supplied drink (by Allah).

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَاصَلَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَوَاصَلَ النَّاسُ فَنَهَاهُمْ قِيلَ لَهُ أَنْتَ تُوَاصِلُ قَالَ إِنِّي لَسْتُ مِثْلَكُمْ إِنِّي أُطْعَمُ وَأُسْقَى  

ahmad:5795Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd > ʿUbaydullāh > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

ahmad:6299Ibn Numayr > ʿUbaydullāh > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

[Machine] The translation in English is: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted in Ramadan, and when people saw him, they advised against it. It was said to him, 'Indeed, you fast continuously.' He replied, 'I am not like you, for I am fed and given to drink.'"  

أحمد:٦٢٩٩حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَاصَلَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَرَآهُ النَّاسُ فَنَهَاهُمْ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَسْتُمِثْلَكُمْ إِنِّي أُطْعَمُ وَأُسْقَى  

ahmad:4721Yaḥyá > ʿUbaydullāh > Nāfiʿ > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued to fast in Ramadan, so people continued to fast. They said, "You forbade us from fasting continuously, but you continue to fast." He said, "I am not like any of you. I am fed and offered drink."  

أحمد:٤٧٢١حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي نَافِعٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

وَاصَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَوَاصَلَ النَّاسُ فَقَالُوا نَهَيْتَنَا عَنِ الْوِصَالِ وَأَنْتَ تُوَاصِلُ قَالَ إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَأَحَدٍ مِنْكُمْ إِنِّي أُطْعَمُ وَأُسْقَى  

nasai-kubra:3250ʿUbaydullāh b. Saʿīd > Yaḥyá > ʿUbaydullāh > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade Al-Wisal. The people said (to him), "But you practice it?" He said, "I am not like you, for I am given food and drink by Allah." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1962)   

الكبرى للنسائي:٣٢٥٠أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَاصَلَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَوَاصَلَ النَّاسُ فَنَهَاهُمْ عَنِ الْوِصَالِ فَقَالُوا إِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ قَالَ «إِنِّي لَسْتُ مِثْلَكُمْ إِنِّي أُطْعَمُ وَأُسْقَى»

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued to fast in Ramadan and prohibited them from breaking their fasts. It was said to him, "You continue to fast?" He said, "Indeed, I am not like you. I am fed and given to drink."  

البيهقي:٨٣٧٤أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي حَامِدٍ الْمُقرِئُ وَأَبُو عُثْمَانَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ قَالُوا ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْعَامِرِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الطَّنَافِسِيُّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَاصَلَ فِي رَمَضَانَ وَنَهَاهُمْ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّكَّ تُوَاصِلُ قَالَ إِنِّي لَسْتُ مِثْلَكُمْ إِنِّي أُطْعَمُ وَأُسْقَى  

أَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ

muslim:1102cʿAbd al-Wārith b. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad from my father from my father > Ayyūb > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

" During the month of Ramadan."  

مسلم:١١٠٢cوَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ جَدِّي عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِمِثْلِهِ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ فِي رَمَضَانَ  


muslim:984cYaḥyá b. Yaḥyá > Yazīd b. Zurayʿ > Ayyūb > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

Ibn 'Umar said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prescribed the Sadaqa of Ramadan (Sadaqat-al-Fitr) one sa' of dates or one sa' of barley for every free man or a slave, male or female, and then the people equalised (one sa' of dates or barley) with half a sa' of wheat.  

مسلم:٩٨٤cوَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

فَرَضَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ صَدَقَةَ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى الْحُرِّ وَالْعَبْدِ وَالذَّكَرِ وَالأُنْثَى صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ قَالَ فَعَدَلَ النَّاسُ بِهِ نِصْفَ صَاعٍ مِنْ بُرٍّ  

nasai:2500ʿImrān b. Mūsá > ʿAbd al-Wārith > Ayyūb > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

"The Messenger of Allah enjoined Zakah of Ramadan upon the free and the slave, male and female, a Sa[1] of dates or a Sa of barley, so the people considered that equivalent to half a Sa of wheat."  

النسائي:٢٥٠٠أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَكَاةَ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى الْحُرِّ وَالْعَبْدِ وَالذَّكَرِ وَالأُنْثَى صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ فَعَدَلَ النَّاسُ بِهِ نِصْفَ صَاعٍ مِنْ بُرٍّ  

nasai:2502Qutaybah > Mālik > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

"The Messenger of Allah enjoined the Zakah of Ramadan on everyone, young and old, free and slave, male and female, a Sa of dates or a Sa of barley."  

النسائي:٢٥٠٢أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَكَاةَ رَمَضَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ حُرٍّ وَعَبْدٍ وَذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ؓ أَنَّهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُجَاوِرُ فِي رَمَضَانَ الْعَشْرَ الَّتِي فِي وَسَطِ الشَّهْرِ وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ بِمِثْلِهِ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فَلْيَثْبُتْ فِي مُعْتَكَفِهِ وَقَالَ وَجَبِينُهُ مُمْتَلِئًا طِينًا وَمَاءً

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan to seek Lailat-ul-Qadr before it was made manifest to him. When (these nights) were over, he commanded to strike the tent. Then it was made manifest to him that (Lailat-ul-Qadr) was in the last ten nights (of Ramadan), and commanded to pitch the tent (again). He then came to the people and said: O people, Lailat-ul-Qadr was made manifest to me and I came out to inform you about it that two persons came contending with each other and there was a devil along with them and I forgot it. So seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Seek it on the ninth, on the seventh and on the fifth. I (one of the narrators) said: Abu Sa'id, you know more than us about numbers. He said: Yes, indeed we have better right than you. I said: What is this ninth, seventh, and fifth? He said: When twenty-one (nights are over) and the twenty-second begins, it is the ninth, and when twenty-three (nights) are over, that which follows (the last night) is the seventh, and when twenty-five nights are over, what follows it is fifth. Ibn Khallad said: Instead of the word Yahliqan (contending), he said Yakhtasiman, (they are disputing).

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ؓ قَالَ اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ يَلْتَمِسُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُبَانَ لَهُ فَلَمَّا انْقَضَيْنَ أَمَرَ بِالْبِنَاءِ فَقُوِّضَ ثُمَّ أُبِينَتْ لَهُ أَنَّهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فَأَمَرَ بِالْبِنَاءِ فَأُعِيدَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّهَا كَانَتْ أُبِينَتْ لِي لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي خَرَجْتُ لأُخْبِرَكُمْ بِهَا فَجَاءَ رَجُلاَنِ يَحْتَقَّانِ مَعَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ فَنُسِّيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ الْتَمِسُوهَا فِي التَّاسِعَةِ وَالسَّابِعَةِ وَالْخَامِسَةِ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ إِنَّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِالْعَدَدِ مِنَّا قَالَ أَجَلْ نَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ مِنْكُمْ قَالَ قُلْتُ مَا التَّاسِعَةُ وَالسَّابِعَةُ وَالْخَامِسَةُ قَالَ إِذَا مَضَتْ وَاحِدَةٌ وَعِشْرُونَ فَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا ثِنْتَيْنِ وَعِشْرِينَ وَهْىَ التَّاسِعَةُ فَإِذَا مَضَتْ ثَلاَثٌ وَعِشْرُونَ فَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا السَّابِعَةُ فَإِذَا مَضَى خَمْسٌ وَعِشْرُونَ فَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا الْخَامِسَةُ وَقَالَ ابْنُ خَلاَّدٍ مَكَانَ يَحْتَقَّانِ يَخْتَصِمَانِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Itikaf during the middle ten days of Ramadan, seeking Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree) before it was revealed to him. When those ten days were complete, he commanded for a structure to be built, and it was built but then collapsed. Then it was revealed to him that Laylat al-Qadr was in the last ten days, so he commanded for it to be rebuilt. He then performed Itikaf during the last ten days, and then he emerged to address the people. He said, "O people, it has been revealed to me that Laylat al-Qadr was made known to me, but two feeble men with the devil made me forget it. So seek it in the ninth, seventh, and fifth nights." I (Abu Sa'id) said, "Indeed, you know the number of us better." He replied, "I am more entitled to do that than you. So leave aside the twenty-first night, and the ninth night follows it, and leave aside the twenty-third night, and the seventh night follows it, and leave aside the twenty-fifth night, and the fifth night follows it."

اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَهُوَ يَلْتَمِسُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُبَانَ لَهُ فَلَمَّا تَقَضَّيْنَ أَمَرَ بِبُنْيَانِهِ فَنُقِضَ ثُمَّ أُبِينَتْ لَهُ أَنَّهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِفَأَمَرَ بِالْبِنَاءِ فَأُعِيدَ ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّهَا أُبِينَتْ لِي لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ فَخَرَجْتُ لِأُخْبِرَكُمْ بِهَا فَجَاءَ رَجُلَانِ يَحِيفَانِ مَعَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ فَنُسِّيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي التَّاسِعَةِ وَالسَّابِعَةِ وَالْخَامِسَةِ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ إِنَّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِالْعَدَدِ مِنَّا قَالَ أَنَا أَحَقُّ بِذَاكَ مِنْكُمْ فَمَا التَّاسِعَةُ وَالسَّابِعَةُ وَالْخَامِسَةُ؟ قَالَ تَدَعُ الَّتِي تَدْعُونَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا التَّاسِعَةُ وَتَدَعُ الَّتِي تَدْعُونَ ثَلَاثَةً وَعِشْرِينَ وَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا السَّابِعَةُ وَتَدَعُ الَّتِي تَدْعُونَ خَمْسَةً وَعِشْرِينَ وَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا الْخَامِسَةُ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed the middle ten nights of Ramadan while seeking Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Decree), then he commanded the construction (of a shelter), but it collapsed. I said, "O Abu Sa'id, you are more knowledgeable about our number, so which night is the ninth, seventh, and fifth?" He said, "If it is the twenty-first night, then leave (for seeking it) on the next night, then the seventh night is the one after it, and then leave on the next night; the fifth night is the one after it." Al-Ruwairi said: Al-Mutarraf reported to me from Abu al-'Ala' that he heard Mu'awiyah say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'And the third (night)'"

اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَهُوَ يَلْتَمِسُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِالْبِنَاءِ فَنُقِضَ ثُمَّ أُبِينَتْ لَهُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَأُعِيدَ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ «إِنَّهَا أُبِينَتْ لِي لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي خَرَجْتُ لِأُبِينَهَا لَكُمْ فَتَلَاحَى رَجُلَانِ فَنُسِّيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي التَّاسِعَةِ وَالسَّابِعَةِ وَالْخَامِسَةِ» قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ إِنَّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِالْعَدَدِ مِنَّا فَأَيُّ لَيْلَةٍ التَّاسِعَةُ وَالسَّابِعَةُ وَالْخَامِسَةُ قَالَ إِذَا كَانَ لَيْلَةُ وَاحِدٍ وَعِشْرِينَ ثُمَّ دَعْ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا هِيَ السَّابِعَةُ ثُمَّ دَعْ لَيْلَةً وَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا هِيَ الْخَامِسَةُ قَالَ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «وَالثَّالِثَةِ»

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to retreat for worship in the middle ten days of Ramadan, seeking Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree) before it was revealed to him. When the middle ten days were over, he commanded for the construction of the mosque to be halted, and it was demolished. Then it was revealed to him in the last ten days, so he commanded for the mosque to be reconstructed in its original place, and he retreated for worship in the last ten days. He came out to us and said, "O people, I was informed about the Night of Decree, so I came out in order to inform you or be informed by you about it. However, two men quarreled with each other, and Satan made me forget it. So seek it in the ninth, seventh, and fifth nights." Abu Nadrah said, "So I said to Abu Sa'id, 'You, the Sahaba (companions) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, are the most knowledgeable about our number, so how should we count it?' He said, 'Indeed, we are more knowledgeable about that than you. When the twenty-first night passes, the ninth follows it. Then when the one after has passed, the seventh follows it. Then when the one after has passed, the fifth follows it.'" Abu Mas'ud said, "Abu Al-'Ala' informed me by way of Mu'attib, who narrated from Mu'awiyah, that he said, 'And on the third night...'"  

البيهقي:٨٥٣٢أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو قَالَا ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أنبأ عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَطَاءٍ أنبأ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ يَعْنِي الْجُرَيْرِيَّ عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ

اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ يَلْتَمِسُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُبَانَ لَهُ فَلَمَّا انْقَضَيْنَ أَمَرَ بِالْبِنَاءِ فَنُقِضَ وَرُفِعَ ثُمَّ أُبِينَتْ لَهُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فَأَمَرَ بِالْبِنَاءِ فَأُعِيدَ مَكَانَهُ وَاعْتَكَفَ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ وَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي أُنْبِئْتُ بِلَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ فَخَرَجْتُ كَيْمَا أُحَدِّثُكُمْ بِهَا أَوْ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِهَا فَتَلَاحَى رَجُلَانِ يَحْتَقَّانِ مَعَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي التَّاسِعَةِ وَالسَّابِعَةِ وَالْخَامِسَةِ 8532 قَالَ أَبُو نَضْرَةَ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي سَعِيدٍ إِنَّكُمْ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَعْلَمُ بِالْعَدَدِ مِنَّا فَكَيْفَ نَعُدُّهُنَّ؟ قَالَ أَجَلْ نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِذَلِكَ مِنْكُمْ إِذَا مَضَتْ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرُونَ فَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا التَّاسِعَةُ فَإِذَا مَضَتِ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا فَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا السَّابِعَةُ فَإِذَا مَضَتِ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا فَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا الْخَامِسَةُ قَالَ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ وَفِي الثَّالِثَةِ

I thu asked Ubayy b. Ka'b (Allah be pleased with him): Your brother (in faith) Ibn Mas'ud says: He who stands (for the night prayer) throughout the year would find Lailat-ul-Qadr, whereupon he said: May Allah have mercy upon him; (he said these words) with the intention that people might not rely only (on one night), whereas he knew that it (Lailat-ul-Qadr) is in the month of Ramadan and it is the twenty-seventh night. He then took oath (without making any exception, i. e. without saying In sha Allah) that it was the twenty-seventh night. I said to him: Abu Mundhir, on what ground do you say that? Thereupon he said: By the indication or by the sign which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us, and that is that on that day (the sun) would rise without having any ray in it.  

مسلم:٧٦٢dوَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ وَابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ كِلاَهُمَا عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ قَالَ ابْنُ حَاتِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ عَبْدَةَ وَعَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ سَمِعَا زِرَّ بْنَ حُبَيْشٍ يَقُولُ سَأَلْتُ أُبَىَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ ؓ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ أَخَاكَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَقُولُ مَنْ يَقُمِ الْحَوْلَ يُصِبْ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَقَالَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ أَرَادَ

أَنْ لاَ يَتَّكِلَ النَّاسُ أَمَا إِنَّهُ قَدْ عَلِمَ أَنَّهَا فِي رَمَضَانَ وَأَنَّهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ وَأَنَّهَا لَيْلَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ ثُمَّ حَلَفَ لاَ يَسْتَثْنِي أَنَّهَا لَيْلَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ فَقُلْتُ بِأَىِّ شَىْءٍ تَقُولُ ذَلِكَ يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ قَالَ بِالْعَلاَمَةِ أَوْ بِالآيَةِ الَّتِي أَخْبَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهَا تَطْلُعُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لاَ شُعَاعَ لَهَا

[Machine] "In the month of Ramadan, it is (known) as the twenty-seventh night. Then (someone) swore and said that it is definitely the twenty-seventh night. I asked, 'By what sign do you say that, O Abu Al-Mundhir?' He said, 'By the sign that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us about, that it rises that day with no rays of light.' (Hadith number 402) Ya'qub bin Ibrahim reported to us from Sufyan, from 'Asim, from Zirr who said (something similar). Ya'qub bin Ibrahim reported to us from Sufyan, from Ibn Abi Khalid, from Zirr who said (something similar)."

أَنَّهَا فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ لَيْلَةَ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ ثُمَّ يَحْلِفُ لَا يَسْتَثْنِي إِنَّهَا لَيْلَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ قُلْتُ بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ تَقُولُ ذَاكَ يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ؟ قَالَ بِالْعَلَامَةِ الَّتِي أَخْبَرَنَا بِهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهَا تَطْلُعُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَا شُعَاعَ لَهَا [402] 3393 أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ زِرٍّ مِثْلَهُ 3394 أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ عَنْ زِرٍّ نَحْوَهُ

Many deputations came to Mu'awiya. This was in the month of Ramadan. We would prepare food for one another. Abu Huraira was one of those who frequently invited us to his house. I said: Should I not prepare food and invite them to my place? So I ordered meals to be prepared Then I met Abu Huraira in the evening and said: (You will have) your meals with me tonight. He said: You have forestalled me. I said: Yes, and invited them. (When they had finished with the meals) Abu Huraira said: Should I not tell yon a tradition from your traditions, O ye assembly of the Ansar? He then gave an account of the Conquest of Mecca and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced until he reached Mecca. He deputed Zubair on his right flank and Khalid on the left, and he despatched Abu Ubaida with the force that had no armour. They advanced to the interior of the valley. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in the midst of a large contingent of fighters. He saw me and said: Abu Huraira. I said: I am here at your call, Messenger of Allah I He said: Let no one come to me except the Ansar, so call to me the Ansar (only). Abu Huraira continued: So they gathered round him. The Quraish also gathered their ruffians and their (lowly) followers, and said: We send these forward. If they get anything, we shall be with them (to share it), and if misfortune befalls them, we shall pay (as compensation) whatever we are asked for. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (to the Ansar): You see the ruffians and the (lowly) followers of the Quraish. And he indicated by (striking) one of his hands over the other that they should be killed and said: Meet me at as-Safa. Then we went on (and) if any one of us wanted that a certain person should be killed, he was killed, and none could offer any resistance. Abu Huraira continued: Then came Abu Sufyan and said: Messenger of Allah, the blood of the Quraish has become very cheap. There will be no Quraish from this day on. Then he (the Holy Prophet) said: Who enters the house of Abu Sufyan, he will be safe. Some of the Ansar whispered among themselves: (After all), love for his city and tenderness towards his relations have overpowered him. Abu Huraira said: (At this moment) revelation came to the Prophet ﷺ and when he was going to receive the Revelation, we understood it, and when he was (actually) receiving it, none of us would dare raise his eyes to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until the revelation came to an end. When the revelation came to an end, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: O ye Assembly of the Ansar! They said: Here we are at your disposal, Messenger of Allah. He said: You were saying that love for his city and tenderness towards his people have overpowered this man. They said: So it was. He said: No, never. I am a bondman of God and His Messenger. I migrated towards God and towards you. I will live with you and will die with you. So, they (the Ansar) turned towards him in tears and they were saying: By Allah, we said what we said because of our tenacious attachment to Allah and His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Surely, Allah and His Messenger testify to your assertions and accept your apology. The narrator continued: People turned to the house of Abu Sufyan and people locked their doors. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded until he approached the (Black) Stone. He kissed it and circumambulated the Ka'ba. He reached near an idol by the side of the Ka'ba which was worshipped by the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a bow in his hand, and he was holding it from a corner. When he came near the idol, he began to pierce its eyes with the bow and (while doing so) was saying: Truth has been established and falsehood has perished. When he had finished the circumambulation, he came to Safa', ascended it to a height from where he could see the Ka'ba, raised his hands (in prayer) and began to praise Allah and prayed what he wanted to pray.

وَفَدَتْ وُفُودٌ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ وَذَلِكَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَكَانَ يَصْنَعُ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ الطَّعَامَ فَكَانَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ مِمَّا يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَدْعُوَنَا إِلَى رَحْلِهِ فَقُلْتُ أَلاَ أَصْنَعُ طَعَامًا فَأَدْعُوَهُمْ إِلَى رَحْلِي فَأَمَرْتُ بِطَعَامٍ يُصْنَعُ ثُمَّ لَقِيتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ مِنَ الْعَشِيِّ فَقُلْتُ الدَّعْوَةُ عِنْدِي اللَّيْلَةَ فَقَالَ سَبَقْتَنِي قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَدَعَوْتُهُمْ فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ أَلاَ أُعْلِمُكُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ مِنْ حَدِيثِكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الأَنْصَارِ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ فَتْحَ مَكَّةَ فَقَالَ أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ فَبَعَثَ الزُّبَيْرَ عَلَى إِحْدَى الْمُجَنِّبَتَيْنِ وَبَعَثَ خَالِدًا عَلَى الْمُجَنِّبَةِ الأُخْرَى وَبَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ عَلَى الْحُسَّرِ فَأَخَذُوا بَطْنَ الْوَادِي وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي كَتِيبَةٍ قَالَ فَنَظَرَ فَرَآنِي فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ قُلْتُ لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ لاَ يَأْتِينِي إِلاَّ أَنْصَارِيٌّ زَادَ غَيْرُ شَيْبَانَ فَقَالَ اهْتِفْ لِي بِالأَنْصَارِ قَالَ فَأَطَافُوا بِهِ وَوَبَّشَتْ قُرَيْشٌ أَوْبَاشًا لَهَا وَأَتْبَاعًا فَقَالُوا نُقَدِّمُ هَؤُلاَءِ فَإِنْ كَانَ لَهُمْ شَىْءٌ كُنَّا مَعَهُمْ وَإِنْ أُصِيبُوا أَعْطَيْنَا الَّذِي سُئِلْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَرَوْنَ إِلَى أَوْبَاشِ قُرَيْشٍ وَأَتْبَاعِهِمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِيَدَيْهِ إِحْدَاهُمَا عَلَى الأُخْرَى ثُمَّ قَالَ حَتَّى تُوَافُونِي بِالصَّفَا قَالَ فَانْطَلَقْنَا فَمَا شَاءَ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا أَنْ يَقْتُلَ أَحَدًا إِلاَّ قَتَلَهُ وَمَا أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ يُوَجِّهُ إِلَيْنَا شَيْئًا قَالَ فَجَاءَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُبِيحَتْ خَضْرَاءُ قُرَيْشٍ لاَ قُرَيْشَ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ دَخَلَ دَارَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ فَقَالَتِ الأَنْصَارُ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَأَدْرَكَتْهُ رَغْبَةٌ فِي قَرْيَتِهِ وَرَأْفَةٌ بِعَشِيرَتِهِ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ وَجَاءَ الْوَحْىُ وَكَانَ إِذَا جَاءَ الْوَحْىُ لاَ يَخْفَى عَلَيْنَا فَإِذَا جَاءَ فَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يَرْفَعُ طَرْفَهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى يَنْقَضِيَ الْوَحْىُ فَلَمَّا انْقَضَى الْوَحْىُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا مَعْشَرَ الأَنْصَارِ قَالُوا لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ قُلْتُمْ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَأَدْرَكَتْهُ رَغْبَةٌ فِي قَرْيَتِهِ قَالُوا قَدْ كَانَ ذَاكَ قَالَ كَلاَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ هَاجَرْتُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَإِلَيْكُمْ وَالْمَحْيَا مَحْيَاكُمْ وَالْمَمَاتُ مَمَاتُكُمْ فَأَقْبَلُوا إِلَيْهِ يَبْكُونَ وَيَقُولُونَ وَاللَّهِ مَا قُلْنَا الَّذِي قُلْنَا إِلاَّ الضِّنَّ بِاللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ يُصَدِّقَانِكُمْ وَيَعْذِرَانِكُمْ قَالَ فَأَقْبَلَ النَّاسُ إِلَى دَارِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَأَغْلَقَ النَّاسُ أَبْوَابَهُمْ قَالَ وَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى أَقْبَلَ إِلَى الْحَجَرِ فَاسْتَلَمَهُ ثُمَّ طَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ قَالَ فَأَتَى عَلَى صَنَمٍ إِلَى جَنْبِ الْبَيْتِ كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَهُ قَالَ وَفِي يَدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَوْسٌ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِسِيَةِ الْقَوْسِ فَلَمَّا أَتَى عَلَى الصَّنَمِ جَعَلَ يَطْعُنُهُ فِي عَيْنِهِ وَيَقُولُ جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ طَوَافِهِ أَتَى الصَّفَا فَعَلاَ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى نَظَرَ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ وَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ فَجَعَلَ يَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ وَيَدْعُو بِمَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَدْعُوَ

[Machine] Delegations came to Muawiyah, and I was among them, as was Abu Huraira, during Ramadan. Some of us started preparing food for others. Abu Huraira used to invite us frequently. Hashim, said: "Abu Huraira invites us a lot." I responded: "Shall I make food and invite them to my place?" I commanded for food to be prepared, and I met Abu Huraira after the evening prayer. I said: "O Abu Huraira, the invitation is at my place tonight." He asked: "Did you invite them before me?" Hashim replied: "Yes." Abu Huraira said: "I wanted to inform you all about a statement from your own sayings, O people of Ansar." He mentioned the Conquest of Mecca. He said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced into Mecca and ordered Zubair to go to one of the lesser pilgrim sanctuaries, and he ordered Khalid to go to the other lesser pilgrim sanctuary, and he ordered Abu 'Ubaidah to go to his garrison. They took to the lower part of the valley while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in his tent." He said: "The Quraysh heralded its safety and that of its followers." He said: "They said: 'We will offer that which they seek. If something happens to them, we will give something to those who ask for it.'"

Abu Huraira said: "He looked towards them and saw me. He said: 'O Abu Huraira!' and I replied: 'Labbaik, Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Let me hear the voice of the Ansar.' Those who responded are my Ansar.' So I called them and they came running, encircling the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do you see the Quraysh and their followers? Raise your arms, one above the other, and gather spoils from them until you meet me at Safa." Abu Huraira said: "So we set off. Whoever we encountered, we killed, whoever came to us seeking protection, we granted it. Abu Sufyan said: 'Are the Banu Harith (of Khuza'ah) safe or not?' He said: 'No the Banu Harith (of Khuza'ah) are not safe after this day.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever closed his door is safe, and whoever entered the house of Abu Sufyan is safe.'" He said: "So the people closed their doors." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached the black stone and touched it, while holding the handle of his bow. He then came by a deity that they worshipped beside the Ka'bah. He poked it with the bow, saying: 'The truth has come and falsehood has perished.'" He said: "Then he came to Safa and we walked together to examine the Ka'bah. He raised his hands, mentioning Allah with whatever He willed to mention, making supplication to Him." He said: "The Ansar were below him." He said: "Some of them said to others": "A man's love for his homeland and his concern for his tribe overwhelmed him." Abu Huraira said: "Then the Revelation came, and when it came, we were not surprised. No one among the people raised his hand with this supplication towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until the matter was decided." Hashim said: "When the Revelation was finished, he raised his head and said: 'O people of Ansar, did you say: A man's love for his homeland and his concern for his tribe overwhelmed him?' They replied: 'Yes, we did, Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Then what will be my name?' 'Absolutely not, you are the slave of Allah and His Messenger. We migrated to Allah and we migrate towards you. Our life is your life and our death is your death.'' They approached him crying and said: 'Wallahi, we did not say anything for which we sought to doubt Allah and His Messenger.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah and His Messenger believe you and excuse you.'"

وَفَدَتْ وُفُودٌ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ أَنَا فِيهِمْ وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَجَعَلَ بَعْضُنَا يَصْنَعُ لِبَعْضٍ الطَّعَامَ قَالَ وَكَانَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ يُكْثِرُ مَا يَدْعُونَا قَالَ هَاشِمٌ يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَدْعُوَنَا إِلَى رَحْلِهِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ أَلَا أَصْنَعُ طَعَامًا فَأَدْعُوَهُمْ إِلَى رَحْلِي قَالَ فَأَمَرْتُ بِطَعَامٍ يُصْنَعُ وَلَقِيتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ مِنَ الْعِشَاءِ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ الدَّعْوَةُ عِنْدِي اللَّيْلَةَ قَالَ أَسَبَقْتَنِي؟ قَالَ هَاشِمٌ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَدَعَوْتُهُمْ فَهُمْ عِنْدِي قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ أَلَا أُعْلِمُكُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ مِنْ حَدِيثِكُمْ يَا مَعَاشِرَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَالَ فَذَكَرَ فَتْحَ مَكَّةَ قَالَ أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَدَخَلَ مَكَّةَ قَالَ فَبَعَثَ الزُّبَيْرَ عَلَى إِحْدَى الْمُجَنِّبَتَيْنِ وَبَعَثَ خَالِدًا عَلَى الْمُجَنِّبَةِ الْأُخْرَى وَبَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ عَلَى الْحُسَّرِ فَأَخَذُوا بَطْنَ الْوَادِي وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي كَتِيبَتِهِ قَالَ وَقَدْ وَبَّشَتْ قُرَيْشٌ أَوْبَاشَهَا قَالَ فَقَالُوا نُقَدِّمُ هَؤُلَاءِفَإِنْ كَانَ لَهُمْ شَيْءٌ كُنَّا مَعَهُمْ وَإِنْ أُصِيبُوا أَعْطَيْنَا الَّذِي سُئِلْنَا قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَنَظَرَ فَرَآنِي فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ فَقُلْتُ لَبَّيْكَ رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَقَالَ اهْتِفْ لِي بِالْأَنْصَارِ وَلَا يَأْتِينِي إِلَّا أَنْصَارِيٌّ فَهَتَفْتُ بِهِمْ فَجَاءُوا فَأَطَافُوا بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ تَرَوْنَ إِلَى أَوْبَاشِ قُرَيْشٍ وَأَتْبَاعِهِمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِيَدَيْهِ إِحْدَاهُمَا عَلَى الْأُخْرَى احْصُدُوهُمْ حَصْدًا حَتَّى تُوَافُونِي بِالصَّفَا قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَانْطَلَقْنَا فَمَا يَشَاءُ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا أَنْ يَقْتُلَ مِنْهُمْ مَا شَاءَ وَمَا أَحَدٌ يُوَجِّهُ إِلَيْنَا مِنْهُمْ شَيْئًا قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أُبِيحَتْ خَضْرَاءُ قُرَيْشٍ لَا قُرَيْشَ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ أَغْلَقَ بَابَهُ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ وَمَنْ دَخَلَ دَارَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ قَالَ فَغَلَّقَ النَّاسُ أَبْوَابَهُمْ قَالَ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْحَجَرِ فَاسْتَلَمَهُ ثُمَّ طَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ قَالَ وَفِي يَدِهِ قَوْسٌ آخَذٌ بِسِيَةِ الْقَوْسِ قَالَ فَأَتَى فِي طَوَافِهِ عَلَى صَنَمٍ إِلَى جَنْبِ الْبَيْتِ يَعْبُدُونَهُ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ يَطْعَنُبِهَا فِي عَيْنِهِ وَيَقُولُ جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَتَى الصَّفَا فَعَلَاهُ حَيْثُ يُنْظَرُ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ فَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ فَجَعَلَ يَذْكُرُ اللهَ بِمَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَذْكُرَهُ وَيَدْعُوهُ قَالَ وَالْأَنْصَارُ تَحْتَهُ قَالَ يَقُولُ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَأَدْرَكَتْهُ رَغْبَةٌ فِي قَرْيَتِهِ وَرَأْفَةٌ بِعَشِيرَتِهِ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ وَجَاءَ الْوَحْيُ وَكَانَ إِذَا جَاءَ لَمْ يَخْفَ عَلَيْنَا فَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ يَرْفَعُ طَرْفَهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى يُقْضَى قَالَ هَاشِمٌ فَلَمَّا قُضِيَ الْوَحْيُ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَقُلْتُمْ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَأَدْرَكَتْهُ رَغْبَةٌ فِي قَرْيَتِهِ وَرَأْفَةٌ بِعَشِيرَتِهِ؟ قَالُوا قُلْنَا ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَمَا اسْمِي إِذًا؟ كَلَّا إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللهِ وَرَسُولُهُ هَاجَرْتُ إِلَى اللهِ وَإِلَيْكُمْ فَالْمَحْيَا مَحْيَاكُمْ وَالْمَمَاتُ مَمَاتُكُمْ قَالَ فَأَقْبَلُوا إِلَيْهِ يَبْكُونَ وَيَقُولُونَ وَاللهِ مَا قُلْنَا الَّذِي قُلْنَا إِلَّا الضِّنَّ بِاللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَإِنَّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ يُصَدِّقَانِكُمْ وَيَعْذُرَانِكُمْ  

ذِكْرُ مَا يُسْتَحَبُّ لِلْإِمَامِ إِذَا أَرَادَ مُوَاقَعَةَ أَهْلِ بَلَدٍ مِنْ دَارِ الْحَرْبِ أَنْ يُعَبِّئَ الْكَتَائِبَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ مُوَاقَعَتُهُ إِيَّاهُمْ عَلَى غَيْرِ غِرَّةٍ

[Machine] "A delegation came to Muawiyah during Ramadan, which included me and Abu Hurairah. Some of us would prepare food for others. Abu Hurairah would often invite us to his journey, so I said, "If I prepare food and invite them to my journey, would you permit me?" He agreed. So I prepared the food, then I met Abu Hurairah in the evening and said, "O Abu Hurairah, the invitation is with me tonight." He replied, "You beat me to it." He invited them to my journey. Abu Hurairah said, "Should I accompany you or speak to you? I have a story to tell you, O Ansar, until the food arrives." He mentioned the conquest of Mecca and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived and entered Mecca. He sent Zubair to one side and Khalid bin Al-Walid to the other, and sent Abu Ubaidah to the Husar. They took control of the valley while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in a tent. Quraysh sent us messengers, saying, 'We will give you anything you ask for if you present them to us, and if they are harmed, we will compensate them.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at me, and he said, 'O Abu Hurairah, announce to the Ansar, so that only my Ansar will come to me.'"

Abu Hurairah called out to the Ansar, and they came and surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He then said, "Do you see the messengers of Quraysh and their followers?" and he struck the fingers of his right hand against the palm of his left hand and said, "Capture them and don't release them until you meet me at Safa." Abu Hurairah said, "So we went, and whenever anyone from among us wanted to kill someone from them, he was killed, and whenever any of them indicated anything to us, we followed their requests."

Abu Sufyan said, "O Messenger of Allah, are they granted amnesty?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever closes his door is safe, and whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe." So they closed their doors and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and took the Black Stone, circled the Ka'bah with it, and had a bow in his hand. Near the Ka'bah was an idol that they used to worship. The Prophet ﷺ struck it with the bow and said, "The truth has come and falsehood has vanished."

After completing the Tawaf, he came to Safa and stood facing the Ka'bah, raising his hands and praising Allah and mentioning whatever He willed. The Ansar stood beneath him and said to each other, "This man has fulfilled his desire for his land and his concern for his tribe." Abu Hurairah said, "It was not hidden from us that whenever the revelation came down, none of us looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and no one would approach him until the revelation was completed. When the revelation ended, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O Ansar, you said, 'This man has fulfilled his desire for his land and his concern for his tribe.'' They said, 'Indeed, O Messenger of Allah, we said that.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'No, I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I migrated for the sake of Allah, and your life is equivalent to mine, and your death is equivalent to mine.'"

They began to weep and say, "By Allah, what we said was only a guess regarding Allah and His Messenger." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, Allah and His Messenger have sworn allegiance to you and will excuse you."

وَفَدَتْ وفُودٌ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ فِي رَمَضَانَ أَنَا فِيهِمْ وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ وَكَانَ بَعْضُنَا يَصْنَعُ لِبَعْضٍ الطَّعَامَ وَكَانَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَدْعُوَنَا عَلَى رَحْلِهِ فَقُلْتُ لَوْ صَنَعْتُ طَعَامًا ثُمَّ دَعَوْتُهُمْ إِلَى رَحْلِي فَأَمَرْتُ بِطَعَامٍ فَصُنِعَ ثُمَّ لَقِيتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ مِنَ الْعَشِيِّ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ الدَّعْوَةُ عِنْدِي اللَّيْلَةَ فَقَالَ سَبَقْتَنِي قَالَ فَدَعَوْتُهُمْ إِلَى رَحْلِي إِذْ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ أَلَا أُحَامِلُكُمْ أَوْ أُحَادِثُكُمْ إِنِّي أُحَدِّثُكُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ مِنْ حَدِيثِكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ حَتَّى يُدْرِكَ الطَّعَامُ فَذَكَرَ فَتْحَ مَكَّةَ فَقَالَ أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَدَخَلَ مَكَّةَ فَبَعَثَ الزُّبَيْرَ عَلَى أَحَدِ الْجَنَبَتَيْنِ وَبَعَثَ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ عَلَى الْيُسْرَى وَبَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ عَلَى الْحُسَّرِ فَأَخَذُوا الْوَادِيَ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي كَتِيبَتِهِ وَقَدْ بَعَثَتْ قُرَيْشٌ أَوْبَاشًا لَهَا وَأَتْبَاعًا لَهَا فَقَالُوا نُقَدِّمُ هَؤُلَاءِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَهُمْ شَيْءٌ كُنَّا مَعَهُمْ وَإِنْ أُصِيبُوا أَعْطَيْنَا مَا سَأَلُوا فَنَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَآنِي فَقَالَ «يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ اهْتِفْ بِالْأَنْصَارِ فَلَا يَأْتِينِي إِلَّا أَنْصَارِيٌّ» فَهَتَفَ بِهِمْ فَجَاءُوا فَأَحَاطُوا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَمَا تَرَوْنَ إِلَى أَوْبَاشِ قُرَيْشٍ وَأَتْبَاعِهِمْ» وَضَرَبَ بِيَدِهِ الْيُمْنَى مِمَّا يَلِي الْخِنْصَرَ وَسَطَ الْيُسْرَى وَقَالَ «احْصُدُوهُمْ حَصْدًا حَتَّى تُوَافُونِي بِالصَّفَا» قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَانْطَلَقْنَا فَمَا يَشَاءُ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا أَنْ يَقْتُلَ مَنْ شَاءَ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا قَتَلَهُ وَمَا يُوَجِّهُ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ إِلَيْنَا شَيْئًا فَقَالَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُبِيحَتْ خَضْرَاءُ قُرَيْشٍ لَا قُرَيْشَ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ أَغْلَقَ بَابَهُ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ وَمَنْ دَخَلَ دَارَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ» فَأَغْلَقُوا أَبْوَابَهُمْ وَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى اسْتَلَمَ الْحَجَرَ وَطَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ وَفِي يَدِهِ قَوْسٌ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ الْقَوْسَ وَكَانَ إِلَى جَنْبِ الْبَيْتِ صَنَمٌ كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَهُ فَجَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَطْعَنُ فِي جَنْبِهِ بِالْقَوْسِ وَيَقُولُ «جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ» فَلَمَّا قَضَى طَوَافَهُ أَتَى الصَّفَا فَعَلَا حَيْثُ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ فَجَعَلَ ﷺ يَرْفَعُ يَدَهُ وَجَعَلَ يَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ وَيَذْكُرُ مَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَذْكُرُهُ وَالْأَنْصَارُ تَحْتَهُ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمُ لِبَعْضٍ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَتْهُ رَغْبَةٌ فِي قَرْيَتِهِ وَرَأْفَةٌ بِعَشِيرَتِهِ وَنَزَلَ الْوَحْيُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ وَكَانَ لَا يَخْفَى عَلَيْنَا إِذَا نَزَلَ الْوَحْيُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا يَنْظُرُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَلْ يَطْرِقُ حَتَّى يَنْقَضِيَ الْوَحْيُ فَلَمَّا قُضِيَ الْوَحْيُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ قُلْتُمْ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَتْهُ رَغْبَةٌ فِي قَرْيَتِهِ وَرَأْفَةٌ بِعَشِيرَتِهِ» قَالُوا قَدْ قُلْنَا ذَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «كَلَّا إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ هَاجَرْتُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَإِلَيْكُمُ الْمَحْيَا مَحْيَاكُمْ وَالْمَمَاتُ مَمَاتُكُمْ» فأَقْبَلُوا يَبْكُونَ وَيَقُولُونَ وَاللَّهِ مَا قُلْنَا الَّذِي قُلْنَا إِلَّا ضَنًّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِ قَالَ «وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ يُصَدِّقَانِكُمْ وَيَعْذِرَانِكُمْ»

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ opened Makkah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ assigned Zubair ibn al-Awwam to one of the Muzaynah (two tribes) and Khalid ibn al-Walid to the other. He looked at me in Kabkaba and called me. I said, "Here I am, Messenger of Allah." He said, "Call out to me with the Ansar." So I called out to them, and they surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as if they were meeting by appointment. He said, "O Ansar, Quraysh has gathered against us. So when you meet them, attack them until you meet me at Safa, Safa is your meeting place." Abu Hurairah said, "We did not meet any of them except that we fought them. Then Abu Sufyan came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, Quraysh has surrendered, there is no Quraysh after today.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever shuts his door, he is safe. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan, he is safe. Whoever lays down his weapon, he is safe. And the leaders and chiefs of Quraysh have taken refuge in the Ka'bah,' meaning they have entered it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then came and circled the Ka'bah, and he struck those idols with the tip of his bow saying, "The truth has come and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is ever bound to perish." (Quran 17:81) Then, when he finished and prayed, he took hold of the door handle and said, "O people of Quraysh, what do you say?" They said, "We say, the son of a brother and a cousin, a merciful and noble man." Then, he repeated this statement to them. They said the same thing. He said, "Indeed, I say what my brother Yusuf said, 'No blame will there be upon you today. May Allah forgive you, and He is the most merciful of the merciful.'" (Quran 12:92) So they pledged allegiance to him on Islam. Then, he went to Safa for the meeting with the Ansar. He stood on Safa in a place where he could see the Ka'bah, and he praised and thanked Allah, and mentioned His victory to them. Abu Hurairah said, "The elderly men began to cry until their beards were soaked with tears." Then they said, "We seek forgiveness from Allah and His Messenger, and by Allah, we said nothing except out of confidence in Allah and His Messenger." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah has confirmed your words and the words of His Messenger and has accepted your pledge."

لَمَّا فَتْحَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَكَّةَ اسْتَعْمَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الزُّبَيْرَ بْنَ الْعَوَّامِ عَلَى إِحْدَى الْمُجَنِّبَتَيْنِ وَخَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ عَلَى الْأُخْرَى قَالَ فَبَصُرَ بِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي كَبْكَبَةٍ فَهَتَفَ بِي قُلْتُ لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «اهْتِفْ لِي بِالْأَنْصَارِ» فَهَتَفْتُ بِهِمْ فَطَافُوا بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ كَأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا عَلَى مِيعَادٍ قَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ إِنَّ قُرَيْشًا قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَنَا فَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فَاحْصُدُوهُمْ حَصْدًا حَتَّى تُوَافُونِي بِالصَّفَا الصَّفَا مِيعَادُكُمْ» [155] قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَمَا لَقِينَا مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا إِلَّا فَعَلْنَا بِهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا وَجَاءَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَبَحْتَ خَضْرَاءَ قُرَيْشٍ لَا قُرَيْشَ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ أَغْلَقَ بَابَهُ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ وَمَنْ دَخَلَ دَارَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ وَمَنْ أَلْقَى السِّلَاحَ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ وَلَجَأَتْ صَنَادِيدُ قُرَيْشٍ وَعُظَمَاؤُهَا إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ يَعْنِي دَخَلُوا فِيهَا» قَالَ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى طَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ فَجَعَلَ يَمُرُّ بِتِلْكَ الْأَصْنَامِ فَيَطْعَنُهَا بِسِيَةِ الْقَوْسِ وَيَقُولُ {جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ إِنَّ الْبَاطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقًا} [الإسراء 81] حَتَّى إِذَا فَرَغَ وَصَلَّى جَاءَ فَأَخَذَ بِعَضَادَتَيِ الْبَابِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ مَا تَقُولُونَ؟» قَالُوا نَقُولُ ابْنُ أَخٍ وَابْنُ عَمٍّ رَحِيمٌ كَرِيمٌ ثُمَّ عَادَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلَ قَالُوا مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ أَخِي يُوسُفُ {لَا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ يَغْفِرُ اللهُ لَكُمْ وَهُو أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ} [يوسف 92] فَخَرَجُوا فَبَايَعُوهُ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ ثُمَّ أَتَى الصَّفَا لِمِيعَادِ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَامَ عَلَى الصَّفَا عَلَى مَكَانٍ يَرَى الْبَيْتَ مِنْهُ فَحَمِدَ اللهُ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَذَكَرَ نَصَرَهُ إِيَّاهُ فَقَالَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ وَهُمْ أَسْفَلُ مِنْهُ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَتْهُ رَأْفَةٌ لِقَرَابَتِهِ وَرَغْبَتُهُ فِي عَشِيرَتِهِ فَجَاءَهُ الْوَحْيُ بِذَلِكَ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا جَاءَهُ الْوَحْيُ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا يَرْفَعُ طَرْفَهُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَنْقَضِيَ الْوَحْيُ عَنْهُ فَلَمَّا قُضِيَ الْوَحْيُ قَالَ هِيهِ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ قُلْتُمْ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَأَدْرَكْتُهُ رَأْفَةٌ بِقَرَابَتِهِ وَرَغْبَةٌ فِي عَشِيرَتِهِ وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَرَسُولُ اللهِ لَقَدْ هَاجَرْتُ إِلَى اللهِ ثُمَّ إِلَيْكُمُ الْمَحْيَا مَحْيَاكُمْ وَالْمَمَاتُ مَمَاتُكُمْ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَرَأَيْتُ الشِّيُوخَ يَبْكُونَ حَتَّى بَلَّ الدُّمُوعُ لِحَاهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالُوا مَعْذِرَةً إِلَى اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَاللهِ مَا قُلْنَا إِلَّا ضَنًّا بِاللهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِ قَالَ «فَإِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ صَدَقَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ وَقَبِلَ قَوْلَكُمْ»

Many deputations came to Mu'awiya. This was in the month of Ramadan. We would prepare food for one another. Abu Huraira was one of those who frequently invited us to his house. I said: Should I not prepare food and invite them to my place? So I ordered meals to be prepared Then I met Abu Huraira in the evening and said: (You will have) your meals with me tonight. He said: You have forestalled me. I said: Yes, and invited them. (When they had finished with the meals) Abu Huraira said: Should I not tell yon a tradition from your traditions, O ye assembly of the Ansar? He then gave an account of the Conquest of Mecca and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced until he reached Mecca. He deputed Zubair on his right flank and Khalid on the left, and he despatched Abu Ubaida with the force that had no armour. They advanced to the interior of the valley. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in the midst of a large contingent of fighters. He saw me and said: Abu Huraira. I said: I am here at your call, Messenger of Allah I He said: Let no one come to me except the Ansar, so call to me the Ansar (only). Abu Huraira continued: So they gathered round him. The Quraish also gathered their ruffians and their (lowly) followers, and said: We send these forward. If they get anything, we shall be with them (to share it), and if misfortune befalls them, we shall pay (as compensation) whatever we are asked for. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (to the Ansar): You see the ruffians and the (lowly) followers of the Quraish. And he indicated by (striking) one of his hands over the other that they should be killed and said: Meet me at as-Safa. Then we went on (and) if any one of us wanted that a certain person should be killed, he was killed, and none could offer any resistance. Abu Huraira continued: Then came Abu Sufyan and said: Messenger of Allah, the blood of the Quraish has become very cheap. There will be no Quraish from this day on. Then he (the Holy Prophet) said: Who enters the house of Abu Sufyan, he will be safe. Some of the Ansar whispered among themselves: (After all), love for his city and tenderness towards his relations have overpowered him. Abu Huraira said: (At this moment) revelation came to the Prophet ﷺ and when he was going to receive the Revelation, we understood it, and when he was (actually) receiving it, none of us would dare raise his eyes to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until the revelation came to an end. When the revelation came to an end, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: O ye Assembly of the Ansar! They said: Here we are at your disposal, Messenger of Allah. He said: You were saying that love for his city and tenderness towards his people have overpowered this man. They said: So it was. He said: No, never. I am a bondman of God and His Messenger. I migrated towards God and towards you. I will live with you and will die with you. So, they (the Ansar) turned towards him in tears and they were saying: By Allah, we said what we said because of our tenacious attachment to Allah and His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Surely, Allah and His Messenger testify to your assertions and accept your apology. The narrator continued: People turned to the house of Abu Sufyan and people locked their doors. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded until he approached the (Black) Stone. He kissed it and circumambulated the Ka'ba. He reached near an idol by the side of the Ka'ba which was worshipped by the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a bow in his hand, and he was holding it from a corner. When he came near the idol, he began to pierce its eyes with the bow and (while doing so) was saying: Truth has been established and falsehood has perished. When he had finished the circumambulation, he came to Safa', ascended it to a height from where he could see the Ka'ba, raised his hands (in prayer) and began to praise Allah and prayed what he wanted to pray. البيهقي:١٨٢٧٣أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُورَكٍ أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ ح وَأنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ أنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى قَالَا ثنا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ ثنا ثَابِتٌ الْبُنَانِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ

وَفَدَتْ وُفُودٌ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ وَذَلِكَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَكَانَ يَصْنَعُ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ الطَّعَامَ فَكَانَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ مِمَّا يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَدْعُوَنَا إِلَى رَحْلِهِ فَقُلْتُ أَلَا أَصْنَعُ طَعَامًا وَأَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَى رَحْلِي؟ فَأَمَرْتُ بِطَعَامٍ فَصُنِعَ ثُمَّ لَقِيتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ مِنَ الْعَشِيِّ فَقُلْتُ الدَّعْوَةُ عِنْدِي اللَّيْلَةَ قَالَ سَبَقْتَنِي؟ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَدَعَوْتُهُمْ فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ أَلَا أُعْلِمُكُمْ حَدِيثًا مِنْ حَدِيثِكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ؟ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ فَتْحَ مَكَّةَ فَقَالَ أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ فَبَعَثَ الزُّبَيْرَ عَلَى إِحْدَى الْمُجَنِّبَتَيْنِ وَبَعَثَ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ عَلَى الْمُجَنِّبَةِ الْأُخْرَى وَبَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ عَلَى الْحُسَّرِ فَأَخَذُوا بَطْنَ الْوَادِي وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي كَتِيبَتِهِ فَنَظَرَ فَرَآنِي فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ قُلْتُ لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَنَدَبَ الْأَنْصَارَ فَقَالَ لَا يَأْتِينَا إِلَّا أَنْصَارِيٌّ فَأَطَافُوا بِهِ زَادَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ فَقَالَ اهْتِفْ بِالْأَنْصَارِ وَلَا تَأْتِنِي إِلَّا بِأَنْصَارِيٍّ قَالَ فَفَعَلْتُهُ قَالَ شَيْبَانُ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ وَأَوْبَشَتْ قُرَيْشٌ أَوْبَاشًا لَهَا وَأَتْبَاعًا فَقَالُوا نُقَدِّمُ هَؤُلَاءِ فَإِنْ كَانَ لَهُمْ شَيْءٌ كُنَّا مَعَهُمْ وَإِنْ أُصِيبُوا أَعْطَيْنَا الَّذِي سُئِلْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ تَرَوْنَ إِلَى أَوْبَاشِ قُرَيْشٍ وَأَتْبَاعِهِمْ ؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِيَدَيْهِ إِحْدَاهُمَا عَلَى الْأُخْرَى ثُمَّ قَالَ حَتَّى تُوَافُونِي بِالصَّفَا زَادَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ احْصُدُوهُمْ حَصْدًا قَالَ شَيْبَانُ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ قَالَ وَانْطَلَقْنَا فَمَا شَاءَ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا أَنْ يَقْتُلَ أَحَدًا إِلَّا قَتَلَهُ وَمَا أَحَدٌ يُوَجِّهُ إِلَيْنَا شَيْئًا قَالَ فَجَاءَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أُبِيحَتْ خَضْرَاءُ قُرَيْشٍ لَا قُرَيْشَ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ قَالَ مَنْ دَخَلَ دَارَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ زَادَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ مَنْ أَلْقَى السِّلَاحَ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ قَالَ شَيْبَانُ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ فَقَالَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَأَدْرَكَتْهُ رَغْبَةٌ فِي قَرَابَتِهِ وَرَأْفَةٌ بِعَشِيرَتِهِ فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ وَجَاءَ الْوَحْيُ وَكَانَ إِذَا جَاءَ لَا يَخْفَى عَلَيْنَا فَإِذَا جَاءَ فَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يَرْفَعُ طَرْفَهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى يَنْقَضِيَ الْوَحْيُ فَلَمَّا قُضِيَ الْوَحْيُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَالُوا لَبَّيْكَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ قُلْتُمْ أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ فَأَدْرَكَتْهُ رَغْبَةٌ فِي قَرَابَتِهِ قَالُوا قَدْ كَانَ ذَاكَ قَالَ كَلَّا إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللهِ وَرَسُولُهُ هَاجَرْتُ إِلَى اللهِ وَإِلَيْكُمْ الْمَحْيَا مَحْيَاكُمْ وَالْمَمَاتُ مَمَاتُكُمْ فَأَقْبَلُوا إِلَيْهِ يَبْكُونَ يَقُولُونَ وَاللهِ مَا قُلْنَا الَّذِي قُلْنَا إِلَّا الضِّنَّ بِاللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ يُصَدِّقَانِكُمْ وَيَعْذِرَانِكُمْ فَأَقْبَلَ النَّاسُ إِلَى دَارِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَأَغْلَقَ النَّاسُ أَبْوَابَهُمْ وَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى أَقْبَلَ إِلَى الْحَجَرِ فَاسْتَلَمَهُ فَطَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ فَأَتَى إِلَى صَنَمٍ إِلَى جَنْبِ الْبَيْتِ كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَهُ قَالَ وَفِي يَدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَوْسٌ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِسِيَةِ الْقَوْسِ فَلَمَّا أَتَى عَلَى الصَّنَمِ جَعَلَ يَطْعَنُ فِي عَيْنِهِ وَيَقُولُ {جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ إِنَّ الْبَاطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقًا} [الإسراء 81] فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ طَوَافِهِ أَتَى الصَّفَا فَعَلَا عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى نَظَرَ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ فَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ وَجَعَلَ يَحْمَدُ اللهَ وَيَدْعُو بِمَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَدْعُوَ  

رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ شَيْبَانَ بْنِ فَرُّوخَ وَأَخْرَجَهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ بَهْزِ بْنِ أَسَدٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ وَذَكَرَ اللَّفْظَةَ الَّتِي زَادَهَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ 18274 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أنبأ أَبُو الْفَضْلِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أنبأ عَفَّانُ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ فِيهِ فَجَاءَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ فَأَحَاطُوا بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدَ الصَّفَا فَجَاءَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أُبِيدَتْ خَضْرَاءُ قُرَيْشٍ لَا قُرَيْشَ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ فَقَالَ مَنْ دَخَلَ دَارَهُ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ وَمَنْ أَلْقَى سِلَاحَهُ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ وَمَنْ دَخَلَ دَارَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ وَمَنْ أَغْلَقَ بَابَهُ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ أَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَذْكُرْ قَوْلَهُ مَنْ دَخَلَ دَارَهُ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ

Shall I enter Paradise in case I say the obligatory prayers, observe the (fasts) of Ramadan and treat that as lawful which has been made permissible (by the Shari'ah) and deny myself that what is forbidden, and make no addition to it? He (the Holy Prophet) replied in the affirmative. He (the inquirer) said: By Allah, I would add nothing to it.  

مسلم:١٥cوَحَدَّثَنِي سَلَمَةُ بْنُ شَبِيبٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَعْيَنَ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْقِلٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ

أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: أَرَأَيْتَ إِذَا صَلَّيْتُ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْمَكْتُوبَاتِ، وَصُمْتُ رَمَضَانَ، وَأَحْلَلْتُ الْحَلاَلَ، وَحَرَّمْتُ الْحَرَامَ، وَلَمْ أَزِدْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا أَأَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ؟ قَالَ: «نَعَمْ۔» قَالَ: وَاللَّهِ لاَ أَزِيدُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا۔

[Machine] Naaman ibn Qawqal came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if I perform the obligatory prayers, fast in Ramadan, refrain from the prohibited, and make the permissible lawful, and I do not increase upon that anything, will I enter Paradise?" He said, "Yes." Naaman then said, "By Allah, I will not increase upon that anything."  

أحمد:١٤٧٤٧حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ

[Machine] He came the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if I observe the obligatory prayers, fast in Ramadan, make lawful what is halal, and forbid what is haram, and I do not add anything else to that, will I enter Paradise?" He said, "Yes." He said, "By Allah, I will not increase anything beyond that."

When al-Ash'ath b. Qais entered the house of 'Abdullah he was having his breakfast. He ('Abdullah b. Umar) said: Abd Muhammad (al-Asha'th), come near to the breakfast. Thereupon he said: Is not today the day of 'Ashura? He ('Abd al-Rahman) said: Do you know what the day of 'Ashura is? He said: What is it? He said: It is a day on which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe fast before the (fasting) in the month of Ramadan (became) obligatory. But when it became obligatory the (fasting of 'Ashura) was abandoned (as compulsory). Abu Kuraib said: He (the Holy Prophet) abandoned it.

يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ ادْنُ إِلَى الْغَدَاءِ فَقَالَ أَوَلَيْسَ الْيَوْمُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ قَالَ وَهَلْ تَدْرِي مَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ قَالَ وَمَا هُوَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا هُوَ يَوْمٌ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَصُومُهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ تُرِكَ وَقَالَ أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ تَرَكَهُ

[Machine] "O Abu Muhammad, come for lunch." He replied, "Is today not the day of Ashura?" He asked, "And what is it?" The other person said, "It is only a day that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast before Ramadan, but when the month of Ramadan came, he left fasting it."

يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ ادْنُ إِلَى الْغَدَاءِ فَقَالَ أَوَ لَيْسَ الْيَوْمَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ؟ قَالَ وَمَا هُوَ؟ قَالَ إِنَّمَا هُوَ يَوْمٌ كَانَ يَصُومُهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَبْلَ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ تُرِكَ

[Machine] "Do you not come closer, O Abu Muhammad, to lunch?" He said, "Why did you fast today?" He said, "We used to fast this day before Ramadan came down. So when Ramadan came down, we fasted it and left everything else."  

الطبراني:١٠٣٨٥حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ السَّكَنِ قَالَ كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَعِنْدَهُ قَصْعَةٌ مِنْ ثَرِيدٍ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فَقَالَ

أَلَا تَدْنُو يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ إِلَى الْغَدَاءِ؟ قَالَ وَمَا صُمْتُمْ هَذَا الْيَوْمَ؟ قَالَ «إِنَّ هَذَا الْيَوْمَ كُنَّا نَصُومُهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ رَمَضَانُ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ رَمَضَانُ صُمْنَاهُ وَتَرَكْنَا مَا سِوَاهُ»

I was an interpreter between Ibn Abbas and the people, that a woman happened to come there and asked about nabidh or the pitcher of wine. He replied: A delegation of the people of 'Abdul-Qais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He (the Holy Prophet) asked the delegation or the people (of the delegation about their identity). They replied that they belonged to the tribe of Rabi'a. He (the Holy Prophet) welcomed the people or the delegation which were neither humiliated nor put to shame. They (the members of the delegation) said: Messenger of Allah, we come to you from a far-off distance and there lives between you and us a tribe of the unbelievers of Mudar and, therefore, it is not possible for us to come to you except in the sacred months. Thus direct us to a clear command, about which we should inform people beside us and by which we may enter heaven. He (the Holy Prophet) replied: I command you to do four deeds and forbid you to do four (acts), and added: I direct you to affirm belief in Allah alone, and then asked them: Do you know what belief in Allah really implies? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet said: It implies testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, establishment of prayer, payment of Zakat, fast of Ramadan, that you pay one-fifth of the booty (fallen to your lot) and I forbid you to use gourd, wine jar, or a receptacle for wine. Shu'ba sometimes narrated the word naqir (wooden pot) and sometimes narrated it as muqayyar. The Prophet also said: Keep it in your mind and inform those who have been left behind.

عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ إِنَّ وَفْدَ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنِ الْوَفْدُ أَوْ مَنِ الْقَوْمُ قَالُوا رَبِيعَةُ قَالَ مَرْحَبًا بِالْقَوْمِ أَوْ بِالْوَفْدِ غَيْرَ خَزَايَا وَلاَ النَّدَامَى قَالَ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا نَأْتِيكَ مِنْ شُقَّةٍ بَعِيدَةٍ وَإِنَّ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ هَذَا الْحَىَّ مِنْ كُفَّارِ مُضَرَ وَإِنَّا لاَ نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَأْتِيَكَ إِلاَّ فِي شَهْرِ الْحَرَامِ فَمُرْنَا بِأَمْرٍ فَصْلٍ نُخْبِرْ بِهِ مَنْ وَرَاءَنَا نَدْخُلُ بِهِ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ قَالَ أَمَرَهُمْ بِالإِيمَانِ بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ وَقَالَ هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا الإِيمَانُ بِاللَّهِ قَالُوا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ شَهَادَةُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَإِقَامُ الصَّلاَةِ وَإِيتَاءُ الزَّكَاةِ وَصَوْمُ رَمَضَانَ وَأَنْ تُؤَدُّوا خُمُسًا مِنَ الْمَغْنَمِ وَنَهَاهُمْ عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ النَّقِيرِ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ الْمُقَيَّرِ وَقَالَ احْفَظُوهُ وَأَخْبِرُوا بِهِ مِنْ وَرَائِكُمْ وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ مَنْ وَرَاءَكُمْ وَلَيْسَ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ الْمُقَيَّرِ

That people from the- tribe of 'Abdul-Qais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, we belong to the tribe of Rabi'a and there live between you and us the unbelievers of the Mudar tribe and we find it impossible to come to you except in the sacred months; direct us to a deed which we must communicate to those who have been left behind us and by doing which we may enter heaven. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I enjoin upon you four (things) and forbid you to do four (things): worship Allah and associate none with Him, establish prayer, pay Zakat, and observe the fast of Ramadan, and pay the fifth part out of the booty. And I prohibit you from four (things): dry gourds, green-coloured jars, hollowed stumps of palm-trees, and receptacles. They (the members of the delegation) said: Do you know what al-naqir is? He replied: Yes, it is a stump which you hollow out and in which you throw small dates. Sa'id said: He (the Holy Prophet) used the word tamar (dates). (The Prophet then added): Then you sprinkle water over it and when its ebullition subsides, you drink it (and you are so intoxicated) that one amongst you, or one amongst them (the other members of your tribe, who were not present there) strikes his cousin with the sword. He (the narrator) said: There was a man amongst us who had sustained injury on this very account due to (intoxication), and he told that he tried to conceal it out of shame from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I, however, inquired from the Messenger of Allah (it we discard those utensils which you have forbidden us to use), then what type of vessels should be used for drink? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: In the waterskin the mouths of which are tied (with a string). They (again) said: Prophet of Allah, our land abounds in rats and water-skins cannot remain preserved. The holy Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: (Drink in water-skins) even if these arenibbled by rats. And then (addressing) al-Ashajj of 'Abdul-Qais he said: Verily, you possess two such qualities which Allah loves: insight and deliberateness.  

مسلم:١٨aحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ

حَدَّثَنَا مَنْ لَقِيَ الْوَفْدَ الَّذِينَ قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ قَالَ سَعِيدٌ وَذَكَرَ قَتَادَةُ أَبَا نَضْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ فِي حَدِيثِهِ هَذَا أَنَّ أُنَاسًا مِنْ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّا حَىٌّ مِنْ رَبِيعَةَ وَبَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ كُفَّارُ مُضَرَ وَلاَ نَقْدِرُ عَلَيْكَ إِلاَّ فِي أَشْهُرِ الْحُرُمِ فَمُرْنَا بِأَمْرٍ نَأْمُرُ بِهِ مَنْ وَرَاءَنَا وَنَدْخُلُ بِهِ الْجَنَّةَ إِذَا نَحْنُ أَخَذْنَا بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ آمُرُكُمْ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلاَ تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلاَةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَصُومُوا رَمَضَانَ وَأَعْطُوا الْخُمُسَ مِنَ الْغَنَائِمِ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ وَالنَّقِيرِ قَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ مَا عِلْمُكَ بِالنَّقِيرِ قَالَ بَلَى جِذْعٌ تَنْقُرُونَهُ فَتَقْذِفُونَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْقُطَيْعَاءِ قَالَ سَعِيدٌ أَوْ قَالَ مِنَ التَّمْرِ ثُمَّ تَصُبُّونَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْمَاءِ حَتَّى إِذَا سَكَنَ غَلَيَانُهُ شَرِبْتُمُوهُ حَتَّى إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ أَوْ إِنَّ أَحَدَهُمْ لَيَضْرِبُ ابْنَ عَمِّهِ بِالسَّيْفِ قَالَ وَفِي الْقَوْمِ رَجُلٌ أَصَابَتْهُ جِرَاحَةٌ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ وَكُنْتُ أَخْبَأُهَا حَيَاءً مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ فَفِيمَ نَشْرَبُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فِي أَسْقِيَةِ الأَدَمِ الَّتِي يُلاَثُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهَا قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَرْضَنَا كَثِيرَةُ الْجِرْذَانِ وَلاَ تَبْقَى بِهَا أَسْقِيَةُ الأَدَمِ فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَإِنْ أَكَلَتْهَا الْجِرْذَانُ وَإِنْ أَكَلَتْهَا الْجِرْذَانُ وَإِنْ أَكَلَتْهَا الْجِرْذَانُ قَالَ وَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ لأَشَجِّ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ إِنَّ فِيكَ لَخَصْلَتَيْنِ يُحِبُّهُمَا اللَّهُ الْحِلْمُ وَالأَنَاةُ

[Machine] Narrated by Qatada who met the delegation, Abu Nadrah mentioned that Abu Said said: "When the delegation of Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , they said, 'We are from Rabiah, and between us and you are the disbelieving Mudar people. We cannot come to you except during the months of haram (i.e., the sacred months). So, please appoint a matter for us so that when we hold onto it, we will enter Paradise and have it as a means of invoking (Allah) for us. If we are engaged in a matter and we seek help from Allah and invoke Him for it, it will be given to us.' He said, 'I command you to fulfill four matters, and I prohibit you from four things. I command you to worship Allah, and do not associate anything with Him. This is a matter other than the four matters. Establish the prayer, pay the Zakah, observe fasting during Ramadan, and pay the fifth of the war spoils. I prohibit you from four things: from predatory animals, the dumbiyah, the hantam, and the muzaft. They asked, 'What is the dumbiyah?' He said, 'A rooted tree, with its branches removed, then it is thrust into the meat of the livestock, camels, or sheep. Water is then poured into it until it boils, and you then drink from it.' They asked, 'What do you command us to drink?' He replied, 'Water that is stored with a strong rope tied to its neck.' They said, 'Indeed, our land is infested with rats, so no water can remain in it except the water of Al-Udum.' He said, 'If the rats consume it one, two, or three times, it does not matter.' And he said to Ashajj Abd Qays, 'Indeed, you have two qualities that Allah loves: patience and forbearance.'"  

أحمد:١١١٧٥حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ

حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُعَمَّنْ لَقِيَ الْوَفْدَ وَذَكَرَ أَبَا نَضْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ أَنَّ وَفْدَ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ لَمَّا قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالُوا إِنَّا حَيٌّ مِنْ رَبِيعَةَ وَبَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ كُفَّارُ مُضَرَ وَلَسْنَا نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَأْتِيَكَ إِلَّا فِي أَشْهُرِ الْحُرُمِ فَمُرْنَا بِأَمْرٍ إِذَا نَحْنُ أَخَذْنَا بِهِ دَخَلْنَا الْجَنَّةَ وَنَأْمُرُ بِهِ أَوْ نَدْعُو مَنْ وَرَاءَنَا فَقَالَ آمُرُكُمْ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ اعْبُدُوا اللهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا فَهَذَا لَيْسَ مِنَ الْأَرْبَعِ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَصُومُوا رَمَضَانَ وَأَعْطُوا مِنَ الْغَنَائِمِ الْخُمُسَ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالنَّقِيرِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ قَالُوا وَمَا عِلْمُكَ بِالنَّقِيرِ؟ قَالَ جِذْعٌ يُنْقَرُ ثُمَّ يُلْقُونَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْقُطَيْعَاءِ أَوِ التَّمْرِ وَالْمَاءِ حَتَّى إِذَا سَكَنَ غَلَيَانُهُ شَرِبْتُمُوهُ حَتَّى إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَضْرِبُ ابْنَ عَمِّهِ بِالسَّيْفِ وَفِي الْقَوْمِ رَجُلٌ أَصَابَتْهُ جِرَاحَةٌ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَجَعَلْتُ أُخَبِّئُهَا حَيَاءً مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالُوا فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نَشْرَبَ؟ قَالَ فِي الْأَسْقِيَةِ الَّتِي يُلَاثُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهَا قَالُوا إِنَّ أَرْضَنَا أَرْضٌ كَثِيرَةُ الْجُرْذَانِ لَا تَبْقَى فِيهَاأَسْقِيَةُ الْأُدُمِ قَالَ وَإِنْ أَكَلَتْهُ الْجُرْذَانُ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا وَقَالَ لِأَشَجِّ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ إِنَّ فِيكَ خَلَّتَيْنِ يُحِبُّهُمَا اللهُ ﷻ الْحِلْمُ وَالْأَنَاةُ  

ذِكْرُ مَا يُسْتَحَبُّ لِلْإِمَامِ أَنْ يُعَلِّمَ الْوَفْدَ إِذَا وَفَدَ عَلَيْهِ شُعَبَ الْإِسْلَامِ

[Machine] Narrated by more than one person who met the delegation, Abu Nadrah mentioned that he heard from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri that when the delegation of Abdul Qais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , they said, "O Messenger of Allah, we reside among the unbelievers of Mudhar, and we can only be with you during the sacred month. So, give us a task that we can pray for, and by which we can enter Paradise if we accomplish it or do it."

He replied, "I command you to do four things and prohibit you from four. You are to worship Allah and associate none with Him in worship, establish prayer, give zakat, fast in Ramadan, and give one-fifth of the spoils of war. I prohibit you from four things: seeking omens by divining arrows, and offering a sacrifice at the places where the pre-Islamic pagans used to offer sacrifices, and wearing false amulets, and practicing divination by drawing lines in the sand."

They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is divination by drawing lines?" He said, "You draw lines and throw pebbles, and the animal that those pebbles hit shall be the one you slaughter. Then you pour water over it to make it boil. When it calms down, you drink from it. Perhaps one of you may strike his cousin with a sword."

The Prophet then said that among the people was a man who had struck someone with a sword. The man said that he had been concealing this out of shame before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . They asked, "So what do you command us to drink, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Drink from the water that is being poured on the she-camel having drawn three times on its mouth." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, our land is infested with gerbils, and not a single she-camel remains with us that has anything left to pour on its mouth."

He said, "Even if the gerbils have eaten it, pour the water three times." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to Ashadjj Al-Abdi Al-Qaisi, "Indeed, you possess two qualities that Allah loves: gentleness and leniency."

حَدَّثَنَا غَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ مِمَّنْ لَقِيَ الْوَفْدَ وَذكَرَ أَبَا نَضْرَةَ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ أَنَّ وَفْدَ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ لَمَّا قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا حَيٌّ مِنْ رَبِيعَةَ وَبَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ كُفَّارُ مُضَرَ وَإِنَّا لَا نَقْدِرُ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا فِي الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ فَمُرْنَا بِأَمْرٍ نَدْعُو لَهُ مَنْ وَرَاءِنَا مِنْ قَوْمِنَا وَنَدْخُلُ بِهِ الْجَنَّةَ إِذَا نَحْنُ أَخَذْنَا بِهِ أَوْ عَمِلْنَا فَقَالَ «آمُرُكُمْ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ أَنْ تَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَتُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَتُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصُومُوا رَمَضَانَ وَتُعْطُوا الْخُمُسَ مِنَ الْمَغْنَمِ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ وَالنَّقِيرِ» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا عِلْمُكَ بِالنَّقِيرِ؟ قَالَ «الْجِذْعُ تَنْقُرُونَهُ وَتُلْقُونَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْقُطَيْعَاءِ أَوِ التَّمْرِ ثُمَّ تَصُبُّونَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ كَيْ يَغْلِيَ فَإِذَا سَكَنَ شَرِبْتُمُوهُ فَعَسَى أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يَضْرِبَ ابْنَ عَمِّهِ بِالسَّيْفِ» قَالَ وَفِي الْقَوْمِ رَجُلٌ بِهِ ضَرْبَةٌ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ كُنْتُ أُخَبِّأَهَا حَيَاءً مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالُوا فَفِيمَ تَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نَشْرَبَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ قَالَ «اشْرَبُوا فِي أَسْقِيَةِ الْأَدَمِ الَّتِي تُلَاثُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهَا» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرْضُنَا كَثِيرُ الْجِرْذَانِ لَا يَبْقَى بِهَا أَسْقِيَةُ الْأَدَمِ قَالَ «وَإِنْ أَكَلَهَا الْجِرْذَانُ» مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِأَشَجِّ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ «إِنَّ فِيكَ لَخَصْلَتَيْنِ يُحِبُّهُمَا اللَّهُ الْحِلْمُ وَالْأَنَاةُ»

One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared before the public so a man came to him and then said: Prophet of Allah, what is Iman? Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah, His angels, His Books, His meeting, His Messengers and that you affirm your faith in the Resurrection hereafter. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Islam? He replied: Al-Islam is that you worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him and you establish obligatory prayer and you pay the obligatory alms (Zakat) and you observe the fast of Ramadan. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Ihsan? He replied: That you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, and for if you fail to see Him. He said: Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour (of Doom)? He replied: The one who is asked about it is no better informed than the inquirer, however I will narrate some of its signs to you. When the slave-girl will give birth to her master, then that is from its signs. When the naked, barefooted would become the chiefs of the people, then that is from its signs. When the shepherds of the black (camels) would exult themselves in buildings, then that is from its signs. (The Hour is) Among one of the five which no one knows but Allah. Then he recited (the verse): "Verily Allah! with Him alone is the knowledge of the Hour and He it is Who sends down the rain and knows that which is in the wombs. And no soul knows what it shall earn tomorrow, and a soul knows not in what land it shall die. Verily Allah is Knowing, Aware." He (Abu Huraira) said: Then the person turned back and went away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Bring that man back to me. They went to bring him back, but they saw nothing there. Upon this the Messenger of Allah remarked: he was Gabriel, who came to teach the people their religion.  

مسلم:٨eوَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ جَمِيعًا عَنِ ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّانَ عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَرِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا بَارِزًا لِلنَّاسِ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الإِيمَانُ قَالَ أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلاَئِكَتِهِ وَكِتَابِهِ وَلِقَائِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَتُؤْمِنَ بِالْبَعْثِ الآخِرِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الإِسْلاَمُ قَالَ الإِسْلاَمُ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ وَلاَ تُشْرِكَ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَتُقِيمَ الصَّلاَةَ الْمَكْتُوبَةَ وَتُؤَدِّيَ الزَّكَاةَ الْمَفْرُوضَةَ وَتَصُومَ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الإِحْسَانُ قَالَ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ لاَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَتَى السَّاعَةُ قَالَ مَا الْمَسْئُولُ عَنْهَا بِأَعْلَمَ مِنَ السَّائِلِ وَلَكِنْ سَأُحَدِّثُكَ عَنْ أَشْرَاطِهَا إِذَا وَلَدَتِ الأَمَةُ رَبَّهَا فَذَاكَ مِنْ أَشْرَاطِهَا وَإِذَا كَانَتِ الْعُرَاةُ الْحُفَاةُ رُءُوسَ النَّاسِ فَذَاكَ مِنْ أَشْرَاطِهَا وَإِذَا تَطَاوَلَ رِعَاءُ الْبَهْمِ فِي الْبُنْيَانِ فَذَاكَ مِنْ أَشْرَاطِهَا فِي خَمْسٍ لاَ يَعْلَمُهُنَّ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ تَلاَ ﷺ { إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الأَرْحَامِ وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ مَاذَا تَكْسِبُ غَدًا وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ بِأَىِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوتُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ} قَالَ ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رُدُّوا عَلَىَّ الرَّجُلَ فَأَخَذُوا لِيَرُدُّوهُ فَلَمْ يَرَوْا شَيْئًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَذَا جِبْرِيلُ جَاءَ لِيُعَلِّمَ النَّاسَ دِينَهُمْ  

muslim:10Zuhayr b. Ḥarb > Jarīr > ʿUmārah / Ibn al-Qaʿqāʿ > Abū Zurʿah > Abū Hurayrah

Ask me (about religious matters), but they (the Companions) were in awe of asking him. Then came a man, and sat near his knees and said: O Messenger of Allah, what is al-Islam? So he (the Holy Prophet) replied: [That] you do not associate anything with Allah, and establish the prayer, pay the alms (Zakat) and fast Ramadan. He said: You (have) told the truth. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Iman (Faith)? He said: That you affirm your faith in Allah, His angels, His Books, His meeting, His Apostles, and that you believe in Resurrection and that you believe in Qadr (Divine Decree) in all its entirety. He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth. He said: Messenger of Allah, what is al-Ihsan? Upon this he said: that you fear Allah as if you are seeing Him, and though you see Him not, verily He is seeing you. He (the inquirer) said: You (have) told the truth. He (the inquirer) said: When will the Hour (of Doom) occur? He said: The one who is being asked about it is no better informed than the inquirer and I will narrate some of its signs to you. When you see a [slave] woman giving birth to her master - then that is [one] of its signs. And when you see barefooted, naked, deaf and dumb (ignorant and foolish persons) as the rulers of the earth - then that is [one] of its signs. And when you see the shepherds of black (camels) exult in buildings - then that is [one] of its signs. The (Hour) is one of the five things of the unseen. No one knows them except Allah. Then (the Holy Prophet) recited (the folowing verse):" Verily Allah! with Him alone is the knowledge of the Hour and He it is Who sends down the rain and knows that which is in the wombs. And no soul knows what it shall earn on the morrow and a soul knows not in what land it shall die. Verily Allah is Knowing, Aware." He (Abu Huraira) said: Then the person stood up (and made his way). Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Bring him back to me. He was searched for, but they could not find him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon said: He was Gabriel and he wanted to teach you when you did not ask.  

مسلم:١٠حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ الْقَعْقَاعِ عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَلُونِي فَهَابُوهُ أَنْ يَسْأَلُوهُ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَجَلَسَ عِنْدَ رُكْبَتَيْهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الإِسْلاَمُ قَالَ لاَ تُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَتُقِيمُ الصَّلاَةَ وَتُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصُومُ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الإِيمَانُ قَالَ أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلاَئِكَتِهِ وَكِتَابِهِ وَلِقَائِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَتُؤْمِنَ بِالْبَعْثِ وَتُؤْمِنَ بِالْقَدَرِ كُلِّهِ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الإِحْسَانُ قَالَ أَنْ تَخْشَى اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ لاَ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَتَى تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ قَالَ مَا الْمَسْئُولُ عَنْهَا بِأَعْلَمَ مِنَ السَّائِلِ وَسَأُحَدِّثُكَ عَنْ أَشْرَاطِهَا إِذَا رَأَيْتَ الْمَرْأَةَ تَلِدُ رَبَّهَا فَذَاكَ مِنْ أَشْرَاطِهَا وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ الْحُفَاةَ الْعُرَاةَ الصُّمَّ الْبُكْمَ مُلُوكَ الأَرْضِ فَذَاكَ مِنْ أَشْرَاطِهَا وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ رِعَاءَ الْبَهْمِ يَتَطَاوَلُونَ فِي الْبُنْيَانِ فَذَاكَ مِنْ أَشْرَاطِهَا فِي خَمْسٍ مِنَ الْغَيْبِ لاَ يَعْلَمُهُنَّ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ { إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الأَرْحَامِ وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ مَاذَا تَكْسِبُ غَدًا وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ بِأَىِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوتُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ} قَالَ ثُمَّ قَامَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رُدُّوهُ عَلَىَّ فَالْتُمِسَ فَلَمْ يَجِدُوهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَذَا جِبْرِيلُ أَرَادَ أَنْ تَعَلَّمُوا إِذْ لَمْ تَسْأَلُوا  

nasai:4990Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm > al-Naḍr b. Shumayl > Kahmas b. al-Ḥasan > ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmar > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar > ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

"Umar bin Al-Khattab told me: 'While we were with the Messenger of Allah [SAW] one day, a man appeared before us whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black. We could see no signs of travel on him, but none of us knew him. He came and sat before the Messenger of Allah [SAW], putting his knees against his, and placing his hands on his thighs, then he said: "O Muhammad, tell me about Islam." He said: "It is to bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah [SWT] and that Muhammad [SAW] is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the Salah, to give Zakah, to fast Ramadan, and to perform Hajj to the House if you are able to bear the journey." He said: "You have spoken the truth." And we were amazed by his asking him, and then saying, "You have spoken the truth". Then he said: "Tell me about Faith." He said: "It is to believe in Allah [SWT] , His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and in the Divine Decree, its good and its bad." He said: "You have spoken the truth." He said: "Tell me about Al-Ihsan." He said: "It is to worship Allah [SWT] as if you can see Him, for although you cannot see Him, He can see you." He said: "Tell me about the Hour." He said: "The one who is asked about it does not know more about it than the one who is asking." He said: "Then tell me about its signs." He said: "When a slave woman gives birth to her mistress, when you see the barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in making tall buildings.'" 'Umar said: 'Three (days) passed, then the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said to me: "O 'Umar, do you know who the questioner was?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "That was Jibril, peace be upon him, who came to you to teach you your religion."  

النسائي:٤٩٩٠أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ شُمَيْلٍ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا كَهْمَسُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْمَرَ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ

بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ إِذْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ شَدِيدُ بَيَاضِ الثِّيَابِ شَدِيدُ سَوَادِ الشَّعَرِ لاَ يُرَى عَلَيْهِ أَثَرُ السَّفَرِ وَلاَ يَعْرِفُهُ مِنَّا أَحَدٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَسْنَدَ رُكْبَتَيْهِ إِلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَوَضَعَ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَى فَخِذَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الإِسْلاَمِ قَالَ أَنْ تَشْهَدَ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَتُقِيمَ الصَّلاَةَ وَتُؤْتِيَ الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصُومَ رَمَضَانَ وَتَحُجَّ الْبَيْتَ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلاً قَالَ صَدَقْتَ فَعَجِبْنَا إِلَيْهِ يَسْأَلُهُ وَيُصَدِّقُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الإِيمَانِ قَالَ أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلاَئِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَالْقَدَرِ كُلِّهِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الإِحْسَانِ قَالَ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ قَالَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ السَّاعَةِ قَالَ مَا الْمَسْئُولُ عَنْهَا بِأَعْلَمَ بِهَا مِنَ السَّائِلِ قَالَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ أَمَارَاتِهَا قَالَ أَنْ تَلِدَ الأَمَةُ رَبَّتَهَا وَأَنْ تَرَى الْحُفَاةَ الْعُرَاةَ الْعَالَةَ رِعَاءَ الشَّاءِ يَتَطَاوَلُونَ فِي الْبُنْيَانِ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَلَبِثْتُ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا عُمَرُ هَلْ تَدْرِي مَنِ السَّائِلُ قُلْتُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَإِنَّهُ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ أَتَاكُمْ لِيُعَلِّمَكُمْ أَمْرَ دِينِكُمْ  

nasai:4991Muḥammad b. Qudāmah > Jarīr > Abū Farwah > Abū Zurʿah > Abū Hurayrah And ʾAbī Dhar

"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] would sit among his Companions and if a stranger came, he would not know which of them was he (the Prophet [SAW]) until he asked. So we suggested to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] that we should make a dais for him so that any stranger would know him if he came to him. So we built for him a bench made of clay on which he used to sit. (One day) we were sitting and the Messenger of Allah [SAW] was sitting in his spot, when a man came along who was the most handsome and good-smelling of all people, and it was as if no dirt had ever touched his garments. He came near the edge of the rug and greeted him, saying: 'Peace be upon you, O Muhammad!' He returned the greeting, and he said: 'Shall I come closer, O Muhammad?' He came a little closer, and he kept telling him to come closer, until he put his hands on the knees of the Messenger of Allah [SAW]. He said: 'O Muhammad, tell me, what is Islam?' He said: 'Islam means to worship Allah and not associate anything with Him; to establish Salah, to pay Zakah, to perform Hajj to the House, and to fast Ramadan.' He said: 'If I do that, will I have submitted (be a Muslim)?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth,' we found it odd. He said: 'O Muhammad, tell me, what is faith?' He said: 'To believe in Allah [SWT], His Angels, the Book, the Prophets, and to believe in the Divine Decree.' He said: 'If I do that, will I have believed?' The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'O Muhammad, tell me, what is Al-Ihsan?' He said: 'To worship Allah [SWT] as if you can see Him, for although you cannot see Him, He can see you.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'O Muhammad, tell me about the Hour.' He lowered his head and did not answer. Then he repeated the question, and he did not answer. Then he repeated the question (a third time) and he did not answer. Then he raised his head and said: 'The one who is being asked does not know more than the one who is asking. But it has signs, by which it may be known. When you see the herdsmen competing in building tall buildings, when you see the barefoot and naked ruling the Earth, when you see a woman giving birth to her mistress. Five things which no one knows except Allah [SWT]. Verily, Allah, with Him (alone) is the knowledge of the Hour up to His saying: 'Verily, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things).' Then he said: 'No, by the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, with guidance and glad tidings, I did not know him more than any man among you. That was Jibril, peace be upon you, who came down in the form of Dihyah Al-Kalbi.'"

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَأَبِي ذَرٍّ قَالاَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَجْلِسُ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَىْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَيَجِيءُ الْغَرِيبُ فَلاَ يَدْرِي أَيُّهُمْ هُوَ حَتَّى يَسْأَلَ فَطَلَبْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَجْعَلَ لَهُ مَجْلِسًا يَعْرِفُهُ الْغَرِيبُ إِذَا أَتَاهُ فَبَنَيْنَا لَهُ دُكَّانًا مِنْ طِينٍ كَانَ يَجْلِسُ عَلَيْهِ وَإِنَّا لَجُلُوسٌ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ إِذْ أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ أَحْسَنُ النَّاسِ وَجْهًا وَأَطْيَبُ النَّاسِ رِيحًا كَأَنَّ ثِيَابَهُ لَمْ يَمَسَّهَا دَنَسٌ حَتَّى سَلَّمَ فِي طَرَفِ الْبِسَاطِ فَقَالَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمَ قَالَ أَدْنُو يَا مُحَمَّدُ قَالَ ادْنُهْ فَمَا زَالَ يَقُولُ أَدْنُو مِرَارًا وَيَقُولُ لَهُ ادْنُ حَتَّى وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى رُكْبَتَىْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِي مَا الإِسْلاَمُ قَالَ الإِسْلاَمُ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ وَلاَ تُشْرِكَ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَتُقِيمَ الصَّلاَةَ وَتُؤْتِيَ الزَّكَاةَ وَتَحُجَّ الْبَيْتَ وَتَصُومَ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ إِذَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ أَسْلَمْتُ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ فَلَمَّا سَمِعْنَا قَوْلَ الرَّجُلِ صَدَقْتَ أَنْكَرْنَاهُ قَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِي مَا الإِيمَانُ قَالَ الإِيمَانُ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلاَئِكَتِهِ وَالْكِتَابِ وَالنَّبِيِّينَ وَتُؤْمِنُ بِالْقَدَرِ قَالَ فَإِذَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ آمَنْتُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَعَمْ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِي مَا الإِحْسَانُ قَالَ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِي مَتَى السَّاعَةُ قَالَ فَنَكَسَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ أَعَادَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ أَعَادَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ شَيْئًا وَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ مَا الْمَسْئُولُ عَنْهَا بِأَعْلَمَ مِنَ السَّائِلِ وَلَكِنْ لَهَا عَلاَمَاتٌ تُعْرَفُ بِهَا إِذَا رَأَيْتَ الرِّعَاءَ الْبُهُمَ يَتَطَاوَلُونَ فِي الْبُنْيَانِ وَرَأَيْتَ الْحُفَاةَ الْعُرَاةَ مُلُوكَ الأَرْضِ وَرَأَيْتَ الْمَرْأَةَ تَلِدُ رَبَّهَا خَمْسٌ لاَ يَعْلَمُهَا إِلاَّ اللَّهُ { إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ } إِلَى قَوْلِهِ { إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ } ثُمَّ قَالَ لاَ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَ مُحَمَّدًا بِالْحَقِّ هُدًى وَبَشِيرًا مَا كُنْتُ بِأَعْلَمَ بِهِ مِنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْكُمْ وَإِنَّهُ لَجِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ نَزَلَ فِي صُورَةِ دِحْيَةَ الْكَلْبِيِّ

[Machine] "We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when we reached outside the city, we saw a rider approaching us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'It seems that this rider wants to meet you.' The man came to us, greeted us, and we returned his greeting. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, 'Where are you coming from?' He replied, 'From my family, children, and tribe.' The Prophet ﷺ asked, 'Where are you going?' He said, 'I intend to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'You have indeed met him.' The man asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me about faith.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Faith is to testify that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, pay the Zakat, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj.' The man said, 'I have accepted.' Then, his camel entered a net of rats, causing the camel and the man to fall and he died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Hold me responsible for this man.' 'Ammaar ibn Yaasir and Hudhayfah helped place him in a sitting position. They said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'He has already passed away.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from them and said, 'Didn't you see me turning away from him? I saw two angels pressing fruits of Paradise for him, so I knew that he died while hungry.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'By Allah, he is from those mentioned by Allah in the verse: 'Those who believed and did not mix their faith with injustice, for them is security, and they are rightly guided.' (Surah Al-Anaam, 6:82)' He added, 'Bury your brother. We carried him to water, washed him, shrouded him, and took him to his grave.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat at the edge of the grave and said, 'Stay strong and do not tear your garments, for we will go through this grief and others will suffer it.'"  

أحمد:١٩١٧٦حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَنَابٍ عَنْ زَاذَانَ عَنْ جَرِيرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا بَرَزْنَا مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ إِذَا رَاكِبٌ يُوضِعُ نَحْوَنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَأَنَّ هَذَا الرَّاكِبَ إِيَّاكُمْ يُرِيدُ قَالَ فَانْتَهَى الرَّجُلُ إِلَيْنَا فَسَلَّمَ فَرَدَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنْ أَيْنَ أَقْبَلْتَ؟ قَالَ مِنْ أَهْلِي وَوَلَدِي وَعَشِيرَتِي قَالَ فَأَيْنَ تُرِيدُ؟ قَالَ أُرِيدُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَقَدْ أَصَبْتَهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ عَلِّمْنِي مَا الْإِيمَانُ؟قَالَ تَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ وَتُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَتُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصُومُ رَمَضَانَ وَتَحُجُّ الْبَيْتَ قَالَ قَدْ أَقْرَرْتُ قَالَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ بَعِيرَهُ دَخَلَتْ يَدُهُ فِي شَبَكَةِ جُرْذَانٍ فَهَوَى بَعِيرُهُ وَهَوَى الرَّجُلُ فَوَقَعَ عَلَى هَامَتِهِ فَمَاتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَيَّ بِالرَّجُلِ قَالَ فَوَثَبَ إِلَيْهِ عَمَّارُ بْنُ يَاسِرٍ وَحُذَيْفَةُ فَأَقْعَدَاهُ فَقَالَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قُبِضَ الرَّجُلُ قَالَ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَمَا رَأَيْتُمَا إِعْرَاضِي عَنِ الرَّجُلِ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ مَلَكَيْنِ يَدُسَّانِ فِي فِيهِ مِنْ ثِمَارِ الْجَنَّةِ فَعَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ مَاتَ جَائِعًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَذَا وَاللهِ مِنَ الَّذِينَ قَالَ اللهُ ﷻ {الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يَلْبِسُوا إِيمَانَهُمْ بِظُلْمٍ أُولَئِكَ لَهُمُ الْأَمْنُ وَهُمْ مُهْتَدُونَ} [الأنعام 82] قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ دُونَكُمْ أَخَاكُمْ قَالَ فَاحْتَمَلْنَاهُ إِلَى الْمَاءِ فَغَسَّلْنَاهُ وَحَنَّطْنَاهُ وَكَفَّنَّاهُ وَحَمَلْنَاهُ إِلَى الْقَبْرِ قَالَ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى جَلَسَ عَلَى شَفِيرِ الْقَبْرِ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَلْحِدُوا وَلَا تَشُقُّوا فَإِنَّ اللَّحْدَ لَنَا وَالشَّقَّ لِغَيْرِنَا
