٢٦۔ سُورَةُ الشُّعَرَاء ص ٢

The Poets (Meccan)

quran:26:51

Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers."  

Indeed We hope our Lord will forgive us our iniquities, for being the first to believe’, in our time.
القرآن:٢٦:٥١

إِنَّا نَطْمَعُ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَايَانَا أَنْ كُنَّا أَوَّلَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ  

{إنا نطمع} نرجوا {أن يغفر لنا ربنا خطايانا أن} أي بأن {كنَّا أول المؤمنين} في زماننا.
quran:26:52

And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."  

And We revealed to Moses, after many years which he spent among them calling them to the truth with God’s signs but all of which only increased them in insolence, ˹saying˺, ‘Journey with My servants, the Children of Israel, by night (a variant reading ˹for an asri˺ is an isr, from the verb sarā, one form of asrā) go with them by night in the direction of the sea, for indeed you will be pursued’. Pharaoh and his armies will pursue you, but when they enter the sea in pursuit of you, I will deliver you and drown them.
القرآن:٢٦:٥٢

وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي إِنَّكُمْ مُتَّبَعُونَ  

{وأوحينا إلى موسى} بعد سنين أقامها بينهم يدعوهم بآيات الله إلى الحق فلم يزيدوا إلا عتوا {أن أسر بعبادي} بني إسرائيل وفي قراءة بكسر النون ووصل همزة أسر من سرى لغة في أسرى أي سر بهم ليلا إلى البحر {إنكم مُتَّبعون} يتبعكم فرعون وجنوده فيلجون وراءكم البحر فأنجيكم وأغرقهم.
quran:26:53

Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers  

Then Pharaoh, having been informed of their night departure, sent to the cities — it is said that he ruled a thousand cities and twelve thousand villages — musterers, to assemble the army, saying:
القرآن:٢٦:٥٣

فَأَرْسَلَ فِرْعَوْنُ فِي الْمَدَائِنِ حَاشِرِينَ  

{فأرسل فرعون} حين أخبر بسيرهم {في المدائن} قيل كان له ألف مدينة واثنا عشر ألف قرية {حاشرين} جامعين الجيش قائلا.
quran:26:54

˹And said˺, "Indeed, those are but a small band,  

‘Lo! these are but a small gang. It is said that they ˹the Children of Israel˺ numbered 670,000, while his ˹Pharaoh’s˺ vanguard alone numbered 700,000 and so he deemed their number insignificant in comparison to his huge army.
القرآن:٢٦:٥٤

إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ لَشِرْذِمَةٌ قَلِيلُونَ  

{إن هؤلاء لشرذمةٌ} طائفة {قليلون} قيل كانوا ستمائة ألف وسبعين ومقدمة جيشه سبعمائة ألف فقللهم بالنظر إلى كثرة جيشه.
quran:26:55

And indeed, they are enraging us,  

And indeed they have enraged us, their actions infuriate us,
القرآن:٢٦:٥٥

وَإِنَّهُمْ لَنَا لَغَائِظُونَ  

{وإنهم لنا لغائظون} فاعلون ما يغيظنا.
quran:26:56

And indeed, we are a cautious society... "  

and indeed we are all on our guard’, ready (a variant reading ˹for hadhirūna˺ has hādhirūn, meaning ‘alert’).
القرآن:٢٦:٥٦

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِيعٌ حَاذِرُونَ  

{وإنا لجميعٌ حذرون} مستعدون وفي قراءة حاذرون متيقظون.
quran:26:57

So We removed them from gardens and springs  

God, exalted be He, says: So We made them, Pharaoh and his folk, go forth, out of Egypt, in order to pursue Moses and his people, from gardens, orchards on either side of the Nile, and springs, streams running from the Nile through their dwellings,
القرآن:٢٦:٥٧

فَأَخْرَجْنَاهُمْ مِنْ جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ  

قال تعالى: {فأخرجناهم} أي فرعون وقومه من مصر ليلحقوا موسى وقومه {من جنات} بساتين كانت على جانبي النيل {وعيون} أنهار جارية في الدور من النيل.
quran:26:58

And treasures and honorable station -  

and treasures, visible riches of gold and silver — these ˹riches˺ are called kunūz ˹as opposed to amwāl, ‘riches’˺ because that ˹portion˺ which is ˹always˺ due to God, exalted be He, from them had not been paid — and splendid places, exquisite residences for princes and ministers surrounded by their retinues.
القرآن:٢٦:٥٨

وَكُنُوزٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ  

{وكنوز} أموال ظاهرة من الذهب والفضة، وسميت كنوزا لأنه لم يعط حق الله تعالى منها {ومقامٍ كريمٍ} مجلس حسن للأمراء والوزراء يحفه أتباعهم.
quran:26:59

Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.  

So ˹it was˺, that is, Our expulsion ˹of them˺ was as We have described, and We made the Children of Israel to inherit these, after drowning Pharaoh and his folk.
القرآن:٢٦:٥٩

كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ  

{كذلك} أي إخراجنا كما وصفنا {وأورثناها بني إسرائيل} بعد إغراق فرعون وقومه.
quran:26:60

So they pursued them at sunrise.  

Then they pursued them, they caught them up, at sunrise.
القرآن:٢٦:٦٠

فَأَتْبَعُوهُمْ مُشْرِقِينَ  

{فأتبعوهم} لحقوهم {مشرقين} وقت شروق الشمس.
quran:26:61

And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"  

And when the two hosts sighted each other, the companions of Moses said, ‘We have been caught!’, Pharaoh’s hosts have caught us up and we have no power against them.
القرآن:٢٦:٦١

فَلَمَّا تَرَاءَى الْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَابُ مُوسَىٰ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ  

{فلما تراءى الجمعان} رأى كل منهما الآخر {قال أصحاب موسى إنا لمدركون} يدركنا جمع فرعون ولا طاقة لنا به.
quran:26:62

˹Moses˺ said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."  

He, Moses, said, ‘Certainly not!, they shall not catch us up; indeed I have my Lord with me, to provide assistance. He will guide me’, to the route of deliverance.
القرآن:٢٦:٦٢

قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ  

{قال} موسى {كلا} أي لن يدركونا {إن معي ربي} ينصره {سيهدين} طريق النجاة.
quran:26:63

Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.  

God, exalted be He, says: Thereupon We revealed to Moses: ‘Strike the sea with your staff’, and he struck it, whereupon it parted, it split into twelve parts, and each part was as a mighty mountain, between each of these parts were paths which they followed, such that not even the saddles or the felts of the riders were touched by water.
القرآن:٢٦:٦٣

فَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ أَنِ اضْرِبْ بِعَصَاكَ الْبَحْرَ ۖ فَانْفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَالطَّوْدِ الْعَظِيمِ  

قال تعالى: {فأوحينا إلى موسى أن اضرب بعصاك البحر} فضربه {فانفلق} فانشق اثنى عشر فرقا {فكان كل فرق كالطود العظيم} الجبل الضخم بينهما مسالك سلكوها لم يبتل منها سرج الراكب ولا لبده.
quran:26:64

And We advanced thereto the pursuers.  

And there We brought near the others, Pharaoh and his folk, until they followed them across the same paths.
القرآن:٢٦:٦٤

وَأَزْلَفْنَا ثَمَّ الْآخَرِينَ  

{وأزلفنا} قرَّبنا {ثمَّ} هناك {الآخرين} فرعون وقومه حتى سلكوا مسالكهم.
quran:26:65

And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.  

And We delivered Moses and all those who were with him, by bringing them out of the sea while it was in the state mentioned ˹above˺.
القرآن:٢٦:٦٥

وَأَنْجَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ أَجْمَعِينَ  

{وأنجينا موسى ومن معه أجمعين} بإخراجهم من البحر على هيئته المذكورة.
quran:26:66

Then We drowned the others.  

Then We drowned the others, Pharaoh and his folk by closing the sea on them after they had entered the sea and the Children of Israel had exited therefrom.
القرآن:٢٦:٦٦

ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا الْآخَرِينَ  

{ثم أغرقنا الآخرين} فرعون وقومه بإطباق البحر عليهم لما تم دخولهم في البحر وخروج بني إسرائيل منه.
quran:26:67

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.  

Surely in that, drowning of Pharaoh and his folk, there is a sign, a lesson for those ˹generations˺ who would come after them; but most of them are not believers, in God. The only ones to believe were Āsiya — Pharaoh’s wife — Hizqīl, the believing man of Pharaoh’s family, and Maryam daughter of Nāmūsī, she who pointed out the bone remains of ˹the prophet˺ Joseph, peace be upon him.
القرآن:٢٦:٦٧

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ  

{إن في ذلك} إغراق فرعون وقومه {لآيةٌ} عبرة لمن بعدهم {وما كان أكثرهم مؤمنين} بالله لم يؤمن منهم غير آسية امرأة فرعون وحزقيل مؤمن آل فرعون ومريم بنت ناموصى التي دلت على عظام يوسف عليه السلام.
quran:26:68

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.  

And surely your Lord, He is the Mighty, for He wrought vengeance upon the disbelievers by drowning them, the Merciful, to believers, delivering them from drowning.
القرآن:٢٦:٦٨

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ  

{وإن ربك لهو العزيز} فانتقم من الكافرين بإغراقهم {الرحيم} بالمؤمنين فأنجاهم من الغرق.
quran:26:69

And recite to them the news of Abraham,  

And recite to them, the disbelievers of Mecca, the tiding, the tale, of Abraham (Ibrāhīma is substituted by ˹the following, idh qāla, ‘when he said’˺)
القرآن:٢٦:٦٩

وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ  

{واتل عليهم} أي كفار مكة {نبأ} خبر {إبراهيم} ويبدل منه.
quran:26:70

When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"  

when he said to his father and his people, ‘What do you worship?’
القرآن:٢٦:٧٠

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ  

{إذا قال لأبيه وقومه ما تعبدون}.
quran:26:71

They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."  

They said, ‘We worship idols — they reiterate the verb ˹in the response˺ in order to supplement it with ˹the following remark˺ — and remain cleaving to them’, we remain worshipping them all day; they give a longer response to indicate their ˹misplaced˺ pride in such ˹an act˺.
القرآن:٢٦:٧١

قَالُوا نَعْبُدُ أَصْنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَاكِفِينَ  

{قالوا نعبد أصناما} صرحوا بالفعل ليعطفوا عليه {فنظل لها عاكفين} نقيم نهارا على عبادتها زادوه في الجواب افتخارا به.
quran:26:72

He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?  

He said, ‘Do they hear you when you supplicate?
القرآن:٢٦:٧٢

قَالَ هَلْ يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ إِذْ تَدْعُونَ  

{قال هل يسمعونكم إذ} حين {تدعون}.
quran:26:73

Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"  

Or do they bring you benefit, when you worship them, or harm?, to you, if you do not?
القرآن:٢٦:٧٣

أَوْ يَنْفَعُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَضُرُّونَ  

{أو ينفعونكم} إن عبدتموهم {أو يضرونـ} كم إن لم تعبدوهم.
quran:26:74

They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."  

They said, ‘Rather, we found our fathers so doing’, that is, doing the same as we do.
القرآن:٢٦:٧٤

قَالُوا بَلْ وَجَدْنَا آبَاءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ  

{قالوا بل وجدنا آباءنا كذلك يفعلون} أي مثل فعلنا.
quran:26:75

He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,  

He said, ‘Have you considered what you have been worshipping,
القرآن:٢٦:٧٥

قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ  

{قال أفرآيتم ما كنتم تعبدون}.
quran:26:76

You and your ancient forefathers?  

you and your ancestors?
القرآن:٢٦:٧٦

أَنْتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمُ الْأَقْدَمُونَ  

{أنتم وآبائكم الأقدمون}.
quran:26:77

Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,  

They are indeed hateful to me, I do not worship them; but the Lord of the Worlds, I do worship Him,
القرآن:٢٦:٧٧

فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِي إِلَّا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ  

{فإنهم عدو لي} لا أعبدهم {إلا} لكن {ربَّ العالمين} فإني أعبده.
quran:26:78

Who created me, and He ˹it is who˺ guides me.  

˹He˺ Who created me, it is He Who guides me, to ˹the proper˺ religion,
القرآن:٢٦:٧٨

الَّذِي خَلَقَنِي فَهُوَ يَهْدِينِ  

{الذي خلقني فهو يهدين} إلى الدين.
quran:26:79

And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink.  

and provides me with food and drink,
القرآن:٢٦:٧٩

وَالَّذِي هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِ  

{والذي هو يطعمني ويسقين}.
quran:26:80

And when I am ill, it is He who cures me  

and when I am sick, it is He Who cures me;
القرآن:٢٦:٨٠

وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ  

{وإذا مرضت فهو يشفين}.
quran:26:81

And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life  

and Who will make me die, then give me life,
القرآن:٢٦:٨١

وَالَّذِي يُمِيتُنِي ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ  

{والذي يُميتني ثم يحيين}.
quran:26:82

And who I aspire that He will forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense."  

and Who, I hope, will forgive me my iniquity on the Day of Judgement, ˹the Day˺ of Requital.
القرآن:٢٦:٨٢

وَالَّذِي أَطْمَعُ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ لِي خَطِيئَتِي يَوْمَ الدِّينِ  

{والذي أطمع} أرجو {أن يغفر لي خطيئتي يوم الدين} الجزاء.
quran:26:83

˹And he said˺, "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.  

My Lord! Grant me ˹unerring˺ judgement, knowledge, and unite me with the righteous, the prophets.
القرآن:٢٦:٨٣

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي حُكْمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ  

{رب هب لي حكما} علما {وألحقني بالصالحين} النبيين.
quran:26:84

And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations.  

And confer on me a worthy repute, excellent praise, among posterity, those who will come after me up to the Day of Resurrection.
القرآن:٢٦:٨٤

وَاجْعَلْ لِي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الْآخِرِينَ  

{واجعل لي لسان صدق} ثناء حسنا {في الآخرين} الذين يأتون بعدي إلى يوم القيامة.
quran:26:85

And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.  

And make me among the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss, among those who will be given it.
القرآن:٢٦:٨٥

وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنْ وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ النَّعِيمِ  

{واجعلني من ورثة جنة النعيم} ممن يعطاها.
quran:26:86

And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.  

And forgive my father, for indeed he is one of those who are astray, by Your relenting to him and forgiving him: this was before it became clear to him ˹Abraham˺ that he ˹his father˺ was an enemy of God, as mentioned in sūrat Barā’a ˹Q. 9:114˺.
القرآن:٢٦:٨٦

وَاغْفِرْ لِأَبِي إِنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ  

{واغفر لأبي إنه كان من الضالين} بأن تتوب عليه فتغفر له وهذا قبل أن يتبين له أنه عدو لله كما ذكر في سورة براءة.
quran:26:87

And do not disgrace me on the Day they are ˹all˺ resurrected -  

And do not disgrace me, do not expose me, on the day when they, mankind, are resurrected;
القرآن:٢٦:٨٧

وَلَا تُخْزِنِي يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ  

{ولا تخزني} تفضحني {يوم يُبعثون} الناس.
quran:26:88

The Day when there will not benefit ˹anyone˺ wealth or children  

of which ˹day˺ God, exalted be He, says ˹the following˺: the day when neither wealth nor children will avail, anyone,
القرآن:٢٦:٨٨

يَوْمَ لَا يَنْفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ  

قال تعالى فيه: {يوم لا ينفع مال ولا بنون} أحدا
quran:26:89

But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart."  

except him who comes to God with a heart that is sound, ˹free˺ from idolatry and hypocrisy — and this is the heart of the believer, whom such ˹things˺ will avail.
القرآن:٢٦:٨٩

إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ  

{إلا} لكن {من أتى الله بقلب سليم} من الشرك والنفاق وهو قلب المؤمن فإنه ينفعه ذلك.
quran:26:90

And Paradise will be brought near ˹that Day˺ to the righteous.  

And Paradise will be brought near for the God-fearing, and they will ˹be able to˺ see it,
القرآن:٢٦:٩٠

وَأُزْلِفَتِ الْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ  

{وأُزلفت الجنة} قربت {للمتقين} فيرونها.
quran:26:91

And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,  

and Hell will be revealed ˹plainly˺ for the perverse, the disbelievers.
القرآن:٢٦:٩١

وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِلْغَاوِينَ  

{وبرزت الجحيم} أظهرت {للغاوين} الكافرين.
quran:26:92

And it will be said to them, "Where are those you used to worship  

And it will be said to them, ‘Where is that which you used to worship
القرآن:٢٦:٩٢

وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ  

{وقيل لهم أين ما كنتم تعبدون}.
quran:26:93

Other than Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?"  

besides God?, that is, other than Him, in the way of idols. Do they help you, by averting from you the chastisement, or do they help one another?’, by averting it from themselves? No ˹neither˺!
القرآن:٢٦:٩٣

مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ هَلْ يَنْصُرُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَنْتَصِرُونَ  

{من دون الله} أي غيره من الأصنام {هل ينصرونكم} بدفع العذاب عنكم {أو ينتصرون} بدفعه عن أنفسهم، لا.
quran:26:94

So they will be overturned into Hellfire, they and the deviators  

Then they will be hurled, cast, into it, they and the perverse,
القرآن:٢٦:٩٤

فَكُبْكِبُوا فِيهَا هُمْ وَالْغَاوُونَ  

{فكُبْكِبوا} ألقوا {فيها هم والغاوون}.
quran:26:95

And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.  

and the hosts of Iblīs, his followers and those jinn and humans who were obedient to him, all together.
القرآن:٢٦:٩٥

وَجُنُودُ إِبْلِيسَ أَجْمَعُونَ  

{وجنود إبليس} أتباعه، ومن أطاعه من الجن والإنس {أجمعون}.
quran:26:96

They will say while they dispute therein,  

They, the perverse, shall say, as they wrangle therein, with those whom they used to worship:
القرآن:٢٦:٩٦

قَالُوا وَهُمْ فِيهَا يَخْتَصِمُونَ  

{قالوا} أي الغاوون {وهم فيها يختصمون} مع معبوديهم.
quran:26:97

"By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error  

‘By God, we had indeed (in, softened in place of the hardened form, with its subject omitted, in other words ˹it would usually be˺ innahu) been in manifest error,
القرآن:٢٦:٩٧

تَاللَّهِ إِنْ كُنَّا لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ  

{تالله إن} مخففة من الثقلية واسمها محذوف أي إنه {كنا لفي ضلال مبين} بين.
quran:26:98

When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.  

when we equated you, in worship, with the Lord of the Worlds.
القرآن:٢٦:٩٨

إِذْ نُسَوِّيكُمْ بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ  

{إذ} حيث {نسويكم برب العالمين} في العبادة.
quran:26:99

And no one misguided us except the criminals.  

And it was none other than the sinners, the devils or our predecessors, whose example we were following, that led us astray, from guidance.
القرآن:٢٦:٩٩

وَمَا أَضَلَّنَا إِلَّا الْمُجْرِمُونَ  

{وما أضلنا} عن الهدى {إلا المجرمون} أي الشياطين أو أوّلونا الذين اقتدينا بهم.
quran:26:100

So now we have no intercessors  

So ˹now˺ we have no intercessors, as the believers have, in the way of angels, prophets and ˹other˺ believers,
القرآن:٢٦:١٠٠

فَمَا لَنَا مِنْ شَافِعِينَ  

{فما لنا من شافعين} كما للمؤمنين من الملائكة والنبيين والمؤمنين.
