[Machine] When the verse "O you who have believed, when you converse privately" [Al-Mujadila 12] was revealed, the Messenger ﷺ asked Ali to give charity before engaging in private conversations. Ali asked, "How much, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "A dinar." Ali said, "They cannot afford that." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "How about half a dinar?" Ali responded, "They cannot afford that either." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Then how much?" Ali replied, "A shearing." The Prophet ﷺ told him, "You are generous." Allah then revealed, "Are you afraid to present before your consultation charities?" [Al-Mujadila 13] until the end of the verse. Ali used to say, "Through me, this nation was relieved."
49.54 [Machine] The mention of the unhappiest people
[Machine] I and Ali ibn Abi Talib were companions in a battle. When the Prophet ﷺ arrived and settled, we saw some people from the Bani Mudlij tribe working in a spring or in date palms. Ali said to me, "O Abu Al-Yaqdhan, would you like us to go to them and see what they are doing?" I said, "If you wish, we can go to them and observe their work." So, we went to them and observed their work for a while, then we fell asleep. Later, I and Ali got up and lay down in the shade of palm tree trunks and a mound of sand. We slept, and by Allah, the only one who woke us up was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who nudged us with his foot. We were covered in the dust that we slept upon. On that day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ali, "What is wrong with you, O Abu Turab?" referring to the dust on him. Then he said, "Shall I inform you about the most miserable people?" We said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "One of the most miserable people is Uhaymir, the Thamudite, who hamstrung the she-camel and struck you, O Ali, with this (raising his hand to show his forehead) until it bled, and pulled your beard."
49.55 [Machine] The mention of the latest of people's covenant with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
[Machine] Umm Salama said, "Indeed, the most recent person to make a covenant with the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , is Ali."
[Machine] Umm Salama said, "By the One whom Umm Salama swears, Ali was the closest of people to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." She said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away in the morning, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a message to him. I had a feeling that he had sent for him, so he kept asking, 'Has Ali come?' three times." She said, "So he came before the sun rose. When he came, we realized that he had a need to speak to him. So we left the house and I was the last to leave, then I sat closest to the door. Ali came and he was the last person to speak to him. He used to lean towards him and speak privately to him."
49.56 [Machine] The mention of the statement of the Prophet ﷺ "Ali fights for the interpretation of the Qur'an as I fought for its revelation
[Machine] We were sitting, waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , when he came out to us with a torn sandal strap. He threw it to Ali and said, "Among you is someone who will fight for the interpretation of the Quran as I fought for its revelation." Abu Bakr said, "Is it me?" He said, "No." Umar said, "Is it me?" He said, "No, but it is the companion of the sandal."
49.57 [Machine] The exhortation to support Ali.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ heard on the day of Ghadir Khumm saying, "Allah is my Guardian and I am the guardian of the believers. Whoever I am his guardian, this Ali is his guardian. O Allah, be the supporter of the one who supports him and be the enemy of the one who opposes him." Sa'id said, "Six people stood up by my side." Harithah ibn Mudarrib said, "Six people stood up by me." Zaid ibn Yuthay' said, "Six people stood up by me." Amr Dhul-Makarrib said, "I love those whom he loves, and I hate those whom he hates."
49.58 [Machine] The mention of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ "Ammaar will be killed by the rebellious group
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to 'Ammar, "The rebellious faction will kill you." Abu Abdur Rahman disagreed with him, and Abu Dawood reported from Shu'bah from Khalid from Al-Hasan.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to 'Ammar, "The rebellious group will kill you." Abu 'Abdur-Rahman said, and it has been narrated by Ibn 'Awn from Al-Hasan.
[Machine] On the day of the Trench, while he was giving them milk and his chest hair was disheveled, she said: "By Allah, I have never forgotten it, he was saying, 'O Allah, indeed the best is the good of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansar and the Muhajireen.'" She said, and then 'Ammaar came and said: "Ibn Sumayyah, the rebellious group will kill you.'"
[Machine] "Umm Al-Mu'minin Umm Salama, I have not forgotten the day of the trench when he distributed milk to them, while his hair was covered with dust, and he said, 'O Allah, indeed the good is the good of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansar and the Muhajirun.' Then 'Ammar came and said, 'O son of Sumayyah, the rebellious group will kill you.'"
A group of rebels would kill you. (Using translation from Muslim 2916a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to 'Ammar, "You will face hardships, O son of Sumayyah, and the rebellious faction will kill you after wiping the dust off your head."
[Machine] I was with Mu'awiyah when two men came to him arguing about the killing of Ammar. One of them said, "I killed him." Abdullah ibn 'Amr said, "Let one of you admit to killing him in self-defense for his companion, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The aggressor group will kill him.'" Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (i.e., Mu'awiyah) disagreed with him, and Shu'bah narrated from Al-Awam, from a man, from Hanzalah bin Suwaid.
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The rebellious group will kill him."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The rebellious group will kill 'Ammaar." Abu 'Abdur-Rahman said that Abu Muawiyah differed with him and narrated it from Al-A'mash from 'Abdul-Rahman bin Ziyad from 'Abdullah bin Al-Harith. 'Abdullah bin Muhammad informed us that Abu Muawiyah told us that Al-A'mash narrated from 'Abdul-Rahman bin Ziyad from 'Abdullah bin Al-Harith. 'Abdullah bin 'Amr also narrated a similar hadith, but Sufyan Ath-Thawri contradicted it and said it was narrated from Al-A'mash from 'Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Ziyad.
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The rebellious group will kill 'Ammaar." 'Amr said to Mu'awiyah, "Do you hear what he is saying?" So he (Mu'awiyah) pushed him away. He (Amr) said, "Did we kill him?" He said, "Whoever brings him will continue to wash his urine."
49.59 [Machine] The mention of the Prophet's saying ﷺ : "A rogue faction will emerge among the people, and their killing will be more deserving of being killed
"A group will secede at a time of division among the people, and they will be killed by the group that is closer to the truth." (Using translation from Muslim 1065d)
There would be two groups in my Ummah, and there would emerge another group (seceding itself from both of them), and the party nearer to the truth among the two would kill them (the group of the Khawarij). (Using translation from Muslim 1065c)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "My nation will divide into two groups, and there will be a group that deviates between them, killing them is more deserving of the two groups with the truth."
In the event of the dissension among Muslims an emerging sect will emerge ; one of the two parties that is nearer to the truth will kill it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4667)
[Machine] He mentioned to his nation a group of people who will emerge among the people, their characteristic being that they have shaved heads. They will abandon religion as an arrow passes swiftly through its target. They are the worst of creation or the worst amongst creation. You will kill them, O people of Iraq.
[Machine] About the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , concerning a group of people who would depart from this Ummah (community). He mentioned their prayers, their charity, and their fasting, but they would quickly abandon Islam like an arrow leaves the bowstring. The Quran would not go beyond their throats (they wouldn't understand or practice it properly). They would emerge in a faction of people whom the closest people to the truth would fight against.
49.60 [Machine] The mention of what Ali is specifically assigned for in battling the wicked
While we were with Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was distributing (i.e. some property), there came Dhu-l- Khuwaisira, a man from the tribe of Bani Tamim and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Do Justice." The Prophet said, "Woe to you! Who could do justice if I did not? I would be a desperate loser if I did not do justice." ʿUmar said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Allow me to chop his head off." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave him, for he has companions who pray and fast in such a way that you will consider your fasting negligible in comparison to theirs. They recite Qur'an but it does not go beyond their throats (i.e. they do not act on it) and they will desert Islam as an arrow goes through a victim's body, so that the hunter, on looking at the arrow's blade, would see nothing on it; he would look at its Risaf and see nothing: he would look at its Na,di and see nothing, and he would look at its Qudhadh ( 1 ) and see nothing (neither meat nor blood), for the arrow has been too fast even for the blood and excretions to smear. The sign by which they will be recognized is that among them there will be a black man, one of whose arms will resemble a woman's breast or a lump of meat moving loosely. Those people will appear when there will be differences amongst the people." I testify that I heard this narration from Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I testify that ʿAli bin Abi Talib fought with such people, and I was in his company. He ordered that the man (described by the Prophet ﷺ ) should be looked for. The man was brought and I looked at him and noticed that he looked exactly as the Prophet ﷺ had described him. When Haruria (the Khawarij) set out and as he was with 'Ali b. Abu Talib (Allah be pleased with him) they said, "There is no command but that of Allah." Upon this 'Ali said: The statement is true but it is intentionally applied (to support) a wrong (cause). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ described their characteristics and I found these characteristics in them. They state the truth with their tongue, but it does not go beyond this part of their bodies (and the narrator pointed towards his throat). The most hateful among the creation of Allah is one black man among them (Khawarij). One of his hand is like the teat of a goat or the nipple of the breast. When 'Ali b. Abu Talib (Allah be pleased with him) killed them, he said: Search (for his dead body). They searched for him, but they did not find it (his dead body). Upon this he said: Go (and search for him). By Allah, neither I have spoken a lie nor has the lie been spoken to me. 'Ali said this twice and thrice. They then found him (the dead body) in a rain. They brought (his dead) body till they placed it before him (Hadrat 'Ali). 'Ubaidullah said: And, I was present at (that place) when this happened and when 'Ali said about them. A person narrated to me from Ibn Hanain that he said: I saw that black man. (Using translation from Muslim 1066g)

When I mention a tradition to you from the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him), it is dearer to me that I fall from the heaven than I lie on him. But when I talk to you about matters between me and you, then war is a deception. I heard the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) say: Towards the end of the time there will be people who are young in age and from Islam as an arrow goes through the animal aimed at, and their faith will not pass their throats. Wherever you meet them kill them, for their killing will bring a reward for him who kills them on the day of Resurrection. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4767)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A group of people will emerge in the end times who recite the Quran but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion as an arrow passes through its target. Their fighting is an obligation upon every Muslim." Yusuf ibn Abi Ishaq disagreed with him and caused a conflict between Abi Ishaq and Suwaid ibn Ghafalah Abdulrahman ibn Tharwan.

We went out with ‘Ali to the Khawarij, and he fought them and killed them. Then he said: Look, for the Prophet ﷺ of Allah said: “There will emerge people who speak the truth but it will not go further than their throats; they will pass out of the truth as the arrow passes through the prey. Their sign is that among them will be a black man with a deformed hand, with black hairs on his hand.” If it is him, you will have killed the worst of people, and if it is not him, you will have killed the best of people.” We wept, then he said: Go and look. So we looked, and we found the one with the deformity. We fell down in prostration and ‘Ali fell down in prostration with us, but he said: ʿThey speak the word of truth.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 848)

[Machine] "I used to wrestle a man who had something in his hand," so I asked him, "What happened to your hand?" He replied, "A camel ate it." When the Day of Nahrwan came, Ali killed Al-Haruriyah, and Ali was upset by their killing. At that time, he could not find that particular camel's udder, so he looked around until he found it in a slaughterhouse. He said, "Allah is truthful and His Messenger has delivered the message." He also said, "And he had three hairs on his shoulders like the nipple of the udder."

[Machine] I was sitting with Ali when a man wearing traveling clothes entered. Ali was speaking to the people and they were speaking to him. The man asked Ali, "May I speak?" But Ali did not turn to him and he was preoccupied with something. So, I sat next to the man and asked him, "What's your news?" He replied, "I was performing Umrah and I met Aisha who said to me, 'These people who have left your land are called Haruriyyah.' I said, 'They left from a place called Harurā', so they are called that.' She said, 'Blessed is the one who witnessed their destruction. If the son of Abu Talib wanted, he could inform you about them.' So, I came to ask him about their news. When Ali finished, he said, 'Where is the one who sought permission?' So, the man narrated the story to him as he had narrated it to us. He said, 'I entered upon the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and there was no one with him except Aisha, the Mother of the Believers.' So, he said to me, 'O Ali, how are you and your people?' I replied, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' Then he pointed with his hand and said, 'There are people who come out from the east reciting the Quran, but their understanding does not go beyond their throats. They pass through the religion just as an arrow passes through its target. Among them is a man whose appearance is deceiving, as if his hand is in the breast. Shall I inform you about them?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'I solemnly swear by Allah, have I informed you about them?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'So you come to me and inform me that he is not among them, and then I swear by Allah that he is among them? Then you come to me and drag him as you were named?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.'"

[Machine] "When it was the day of Nahrawan, he met the Khawarij and did not leave until they engaged in battle with spears and they were all killed. Ali said, 'Look for Thudayyah.' They looked for him but did not find him. Ali said, 'I did not lie and I was not lied to. Look for him.' They looked for him and found him in the land of Wahdah, with people of the slain surrounding him. There was a man with wounds similar to the marks of the distaff (a spinning tool). Ali and the people exclaimed in wonder at that."

[Machine] Indeed, it has been mentioned to me about an incident that occurred from the east, in which Thudayyah was present. Fight against them, the Haruriyyah said to each other, "Do not speak to him, for he will refute you as he did on the day of Harura." So some of them threw spears at each other. A man from the companions of Ali said, "Cut off the spears, then turn and kill them." And it was mentioned that on that day, twelve or thirteen men from the companions of Ali were killed. Ali said, "Look for the trickery, and it will occur on the day of Shat." They replied saying, "We are unable to do it." Ali then rode the Prophet's white camel and came back with a sheep from the land. He said, "Look for it among these and bring it out." They replied, "We do not deny nor lie." Ali said, "Proceed and do not rely, except if I fear that you will rely, I would not have informed you of what Allah has decreed for you, through the words of the Prophet, ﷺ . And indeed, we witnessed some people in Yemen." They asked, "How, O Amir al-Muminin?" He said, "Their inclinations were with us."

Zaid b. Wahb al-Juhani told us that he was in the army which proceeded to (fight with) the Khawarij in the company of ʿAli. ʿAli then said: O people! I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: there will appear from among my community people who recite the Qur'an, and your recitation has no comparison with their recitation, and your prayer has no comparison with their prayer, and your fasts have no comparison with their fasts. They will recite the Qur'an thinking that it is beneficial for them, while it is harmful for them. Their prayer will not pass their collar-bones. They will swerve from Islam as an arrow goes through the animal shot at. If the army that is approaching them knows what (reward) has been decided for them at the tongue of their Prophet ﷺ, they would leave (other good) activities. The sign of that is that among them there will be a man who has an upper arm, but not hand; on his upper arm there will be something like the nipple of a female breast, having white hair thereon. Will you go to Muʿawiyah and the people of Syria, and leave them behind among your children and property? I swear by Allah, I hope these are the same people, for they shed the blood unlawfully, and attacked the cattle of the people so go on in the name of Allah. Salamah b. Kuhail said: Zaid b. Wahb then informed me of all the halting places one by one, (saying): Until we passed a bridge. When we fought with each other, ʿAbd Allah b. Wahb al-Rasibi, who was the leader of the Khawarij, said to them: Throw away the lances and pull out the swords from their sheaths, for I am afraid they will adjure you as they had adjured on the day of Harura. So they threw away their lances and pulled out their swords, and the people pierced them with their lances. They were killed (lying one on the other). On that day only two persons of the partisans (of ʿAli) were afflicted. ʿAli said: Search for the man with the crippled hand. But they could not find him. Then ʿAli got up himself and went to the people who had been killed and were lying on one another. He said: Take them out. They found him just near the ground. So he shouted: Allah is Most Great! He said: Allah spoke the truth, and His Apostle has conveyed. ʿUbaidat al-Salmani stood up to him, saying: Commander of the Faithful! Have you heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: Yes, by him, there is no God but He. He put to swear thrice and he swore. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4768)

So we sought him and found him, and we directed him towards Ali. When he saw him, he said, "Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!" He said, "By Allah, had you not hesitated and mentioned a word that implied something, I would have told you what Allah has decreed upon these people, from the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ , for whoever takes charge of their killing." I said, "Did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "Yes, by the Lord of the Kaaba, I heard it three times."

[Machine] "I fear for you because of them," I said. They replied, "No, it is not so." I put on my clothes, mounted my horse and entered their residence in broad daylight while they were eating. They welcomed me, saying, "Welcome, O Ibn Abbas! What brings you here?" I told them, "I have come to you from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, the Muhajirin and the Ansar, and from the Prophet's ﷺ cousin and son-in-law. The Quran was revealed to them, so they are more knowledgeable than you in interpreting it. Among them, there is no one from you to inform you about what they say, and I inform them of what you say." Then a group of them left the gathering. I said to them, "Bring forth what you hold against the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his cousin." They replied, "There are three things." I asked, "What are they?" They said, "The first is that they claim that only men have the authority to make decisions in matters related to Allah. And Allah says, 'The decision is only for Allah' (Quran 6:57). So what do men and their rulings have to do with it?" I said, "This is one point. What is the second?" They said, "The second is that Ali fought but did not curse or plunder. If they were disbelievers, the spoils of war would have been lawful for them. And if they were believers, their wealth and lives should not have been violated." I said, "This is the second point. What is the third?" They mentioned a certain phrase, the meaning of which was that Ali dissociated himself from the Amir al-Mu'minin. So if he is not the Amir al-Mu'minin, then he is the Amir of the disbelievers." I asked them, "Do you have anything else besides these points?" They replied, "This is sufficient for us." I said to them, "What if I were to recite to you from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet, anything that contradicts your views, would you reconsider?" They said, "Yes." I said, "As for your statement that only men have the authority to make decisions in matters related to Allah, I recite to you from the Book of Allah that Allah has delegated His authority to men in exchange for a quarter of a dirham. (Referring to the verse in Surah An-Nisa, Verse 95) Allah commanded them to judge in it." I asked, "What do you think about the saying of Allah, 'O you who have believed, do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram. And whoever of you kills it intentionally - the penalty is an equivalent from sacrificial animals to what he killed, as judged by two just men among you.' (Quran 5:95)". It was part of Allah's ruling that men should judge in it. If He had willed, He could have judged in it Himself. So one of the two points has been proven. I ask you by Allah, is men's ruling in resolving disputes and shedding their blood better, or is their ruling in one rabbit better?" They replied, "Indeed, their ruling in resolving disputes and shedding their blood is better." I then asked, "And what about the ruling regarding a woman and her husband, 'And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people.' (Quran 4:35)". I asked them to answer me by Allah, is men's

[Machine] I was the scribe of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Hudaybiyah, so he wrote down what was agreed upon by Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, and Suhail ibn Amr. Suhail said, "If we knew that he is the Messenger of Allah, we wouldn't have fought him; erase it." I said, "By Allah, he is the Messenger of Allah, and even if you dislike it, I will not erase it." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Show me the place of it." So I showed it to him and he erased it. He also said, "Indeed, you will have something similar come to you while you will be forced."
When Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded a peace treaty with the people of Hudaibiya, ʿAli bin Abu Talib wrote the document and he mentioned in it, "Muhammad, Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." The pagans said, "Don't write: 'Muhammad, Messenger of Allah ﷺ', for if you were an apostle we would not fight with you." Allah's Apostle asked ʿAli to rub it out, but ʿAli said, "I will not be the person to rub it out." Messenger of Allah ﷺ rubbed it out and made peace with them on the condition that the Prophet ﷺ and his companions would enter Mecca and stay there for three days, and that they would enter with their weapons in cases. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2698)
When the Prophet ﷺ went out for the ʿUmra in the month of Dhal-Qa'da, the people of Mecca did not allow him to enter Mecca till he agreed to conclude a peace treaty with them by virtue of which he would stay in Mecca for three days only (in the following year). When the agreement was being written, the Muslims wrote: "This is the peace treaty, which Muhammad, Apostle of Allah has concluded." The infidels said (to the Prophet), "We do not agree with you on this, for if we knew that you are Apostle of Allah we would not have prevented you for anything (i.e. entering Mecca, etc.), but you are Muhammad, the son of ʿAbdullah." Then he said to ʿAli, "Erase (the name of) 'Apostle of Allah'." ʿAli said, "No, by Allah, I will never erase you (i.e. your name)." Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the writing sheet...and he did not know a better writing..and he wrote or got it the following written! "This is the peace treaty which Muhammad, the son of ʿAbdullah, has concluded: "Muhammad should not bring arms into Mecca except sheathed swords, and should not take with him any person of the people of Mecca even if such a person wanted to follow him, and if any of his companions wants to stay in Mecca, he should not forbid him." (In the next year) when the Prophet ﷺ entered Mecca and the allowed period of stay elapsed, the infidels came to ʿAli and said "Tell your companion (Muhammad) to go out, as the allowed period of his stay has finished." So the Prophet ﷺ departed (from Mecca) and the daughter of Hamza followed him shouting "O Uncle, O Uncle!" ʿAli took her by the hand and said to Fatima, "Take the daughter of your uncle." So she made her ride (on her horse). (When they reached Medina) ʿAli, Zaid and Jaʿfar quarreled about her. ʿAli said, "I took her for she is the daughter of my uncle." Jaʿfar said, "She is the daughter of my uncle and her aunt is my wife." Zaid said, "She is the daughter of my brother." On that, the Prophet ﷺ gave her to her aunt and said, "The aunt is of the same status as the mother." He then said to ʿAli, "You are from me, and I am from you," and said to Jaʿfar, "You resemble me in appearance and character," and said to Zaid, "You are our brother and our freed slave." ʿAli said to the Prophet 'Won't you marry the daughter of Hamza?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "She is the daughter of my foster brother." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4251)

[Machine] From Ali, it was narrated that they argued over the daughter of Hamza. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled in favor of her aunt and said, "Indeed, the aunt is like a mother." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, can't you marry her?" He said, "She is not permissible for me, for she is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding." And he said to Ali, "You are from me and I am from you." And he said to Zaid, "You are our brother and our freed slave." And he said to Ja'far, "You resemble my creation and my manners."
