9. Book of Ṣalāh (10/30)
٩۔ كِتَابُ الصَّلَاةِ ص ١٠
ذِكْرُ نَفْيِ الْفِطْرَةِ عَنْ مَنْ لَمْ يُقِمْ صُلْبَهُ فِي الرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ
[Machine] Hudhaifah saw a man at the gates of Kindah knocking, so he said, "How long have you been praying this prayer?" He replied, "For forty years." Hudhaifah said, "If I were to die, I would die upon a way other than the way that Muhammad ﷺ was upon. Indeed, the man lightens and completes the bowing and prostration."
[Machine] He heard Ali ibn Abi Talib say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited me from reciting while bowing and prostrating."
أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ يَقُولُ «نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ أَقْرَأَ رَاكِعًا وَسَاجِدًا»
ذِكْرُ الزَّجْرِ عَنِ الْقِرَاءَةِ فِي الرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ لِلْمُصَلِّي فِي صَلَاتِهِ
"The Prophet ﷺ drew back the curtain when the people were in rows behind Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: 'O people, there is nothing left of the features of Prophethood except a good dream that a Muslim sees or is seen by others for him.' Then he said: 'Verily, I have been forbidden from reciting the Qur'an when bowing or prostrating. As for bowing, glorify the Lord therein, and as for prostration, strive hard in supplication for it is more deserving of a response.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1045)
[Machine] "I prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and when he went into the bowing position, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great.' Then, when he prostrated, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.'"
[Machine] When it was revealed "So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord, the Great," he said, "Place it in your prostrations."
لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ} قَالَ «اجْعَلُوهَا فِي سُجُودِكُمْ»
ذِكْرُ إِبَاحَةِ نَوْعٍ ثَالِثٍ مِنَ التَّسْبِيحِ إِذَا سَبَّحَ الْمَرْءُ بِهِ فِي رُكُوعِهِ
All Glorious, All Holy, Lord of the Angels and the Spirit. (Using translation from Muslim 487a)
"The Prophet ﷺ drew back the curtain when the people were in rows behind Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: 'O people, there is nothing left of the features of Prophethood except a good dream that a Muslim sees or is seen by others for him.' Then he said: 'Verily, I have been forbidden from reciting the Qur'an when bowing or prostrating. As for bowing, glorify the Lord therein, and as for prostration, strive hard in supplication for it is more deserving of a response.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1045)
ʿO Allah, to You I have bowed, in You I have believed and to You I have submitted. You are my Lord. My hearing my sight, my brain, my bones and my sinews submit to You. Whatever my feet carry is for Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 960)
[Machine] I heard that Anas ibn Malik described to us the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , saying, "He would stand and perform the prayer, and when he raised his head from the bowing position, we would say, 'He has forgotten the length of standing.'"
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would perform the rukoo' (bowing position), he would say, "O Allah, for you I have bowed and in You I believe, and to You I have submitted. My hearing, sight, mind, bones, and nerves all humble themselves for You." And when he would raise his head from the rukoo', he would say, "Allah hears the one who praises Him, our Lord, and to You belongs all praise, filling the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and filling whatever You will after that."
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his head from Ruku’, he said: ‘Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, Allahumma, Rabbana lakal-hamd, mil’ as-samawati wa mil’ al- ard wa mil’ ma shi’ta min shay’in ba’d (Allah hears those who praise Him. O Allah! O our Lord, to You is the praise as much as fills the heavens, as much as fills the earth and as much as You will after that).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 878)
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “ Allah listens to him who praises Him,” he also said: O Allah, our Lord, to thee be the praise in all heavens. Mu’ammil said( in his version); “ In all the heavens, and in all the earth, and in all that it pleases Thee to create afterwards. O thou Who art worthy of praise and glory, most worthy of what a servant says, and we are all thy servants, no one can withhold what thou givest or give what Thou withholdest. “The narrators then were agreed on the words: “And riches cannot avail a wealthy person with Thee.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 847)
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his head after bowing, he said: Allah! our Lord, to Thee be the praise that would fill the heavens and the earth and that which is between them, and that which will please Thee besides (them). Worthy art Thou of all praise and glory. No one can withhold what Thou givest, or give what Thou withholdest. And the greatness O! the great availeth not against Thee. (Using translation from Muslim 478a)
When the Imam says: “Allah listens to him who praised Him,” say: “O Allah, our lord, to Thee be the praise, “ for if what anyone says synchronises with what the angels say, he will be forgiven his past sins. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 848)
“When the Imam says: ‘Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him),’ say: ‘Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (O our Lord, to You is the praise).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 876)
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِذَا قَالَ الْإِمَامُ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ فَقُولُوا رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ»
ذِكْرُ الْإِبَاحَةِ لِلْمَرْءِ أَنْ يَقُولُ مَا وَصَفْنَا بِحَذْفِ الْوَاوِ مِنْهُ
“When the Imam says: ‘Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him),’ say: ‘Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (O our Lord, to You is the praise).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 876)
One day we were praying behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his head after bowing, he said: Allah listened to him who praised Him. A man behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: O Allah, Our Lord, and to Thee be praise, much praise, good and blessed. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he asked: Which of you if the one who spoke (the words) just now. The man said: I (uttered) these words, Prophet of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I saw more than thirty angels racing against one another to be the one to write them first. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 770)
When the Imam says: “Allah listens to him who praised Him,” say: “O Allah, our lord, to Thee be the praise, “ for if what anyone says synchronises with what the angels say, he will be forgiven his past sins. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 848)
I saw that the Prophet ﷺ placed his knees (on the ground) before placing his hands when he prostrated himself. And when he stood up, he raised his hands before his knees. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 838)
[Machine] I was at Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, when someone from her relatives brought a young boy who had a mark on his face. He stood up to pray, and when he went to prostrate, he blew. Umm Salamah told him not to do that, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say to a young boy with a similar mark on his face, "O Rabah! Beautify your face."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not extend your arms when you pray, like stretching the wings of a bird, but rather keep them firmly against your sides and let your palms rest on your thighs. Avoid crossing your fingers, for if you do so, every limb of yours will prostrate."
[Machine] I heard Al-Bara' saying, "The Prophet ﷺ used to prostrate on the palms of his hands."
سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ يَقُولُ «كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَسْجُدُ عَلَى أَلْيَتَيْ كَفَّيْهِ
ذِكْرُ الْأَمْرِ بِرَفْعِ الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ عَنِ الْأَرْضِ عِنْدَ الِانْتِصَابِ فِي السُّجُودِ
[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic phrase into English is: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'When you prostrate, place your palms on the ground and raise your elbows and stand up straight.'"
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا سَجَدْتَ فَضَعْ كَفَّيْكَ وَارْفَعْ مِرْفَقَيْكَ وَانْتَصِبْ»
ذِكْرُ الْأَمْرِ بِضَمِّ الْفَخِذَيْنِ عِنْدَ السُّجُودِ لِلْمُصَلِّي
when one of you prostrates himself, he should not stretch out his forearms( on the ground) like a dog and he should join both of his thighs. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 901)
The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ complained to the Prophet ﷺ about the hardship when they kept their forearms far away from their sides while prostrating. He said: Take help with the elbows (by spreading them on the ground and sticking them to the sides). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 902)
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ used to raise his hands and spread them in front of him during prostration until the whiteness of his armpits was visible."
«كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا سَجَدَ فَرَّجَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ حَتَّى يَبْدُوَ بَيَاضُ إِبْطَيْهِ»
ذِكْرُ مَا يُسْتَحَبُّ لِلْمُصَلِّي ضَمُّ الْأَصَابِعِ فِي السُّجُودِ
[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic phrase into English is: "The Prophet ﷺ used to separate his fingers when he bowed and join them when he prostrated."
«أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا رَكَعَ فَرَّجَ أَصَابِعَهُ وَإِذَا سَجَدَ ضَمَّ أَصَابِعَهُ»
ذِكْرُ الْبَيَانِ بِأَنَّ الْمَرْءَ إِذَا سَجَدَ، سَجَدَ مَعَهُ آرَابُهُ السَّبْعُ
when a servant (of Allah) prostrates himself, the seven limbs, i.e, his face, his palms, his knees and his feet prostrate along with him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 891)
