[Machine] I heard him say, "If a revelation from my Lord comes to me, giving me the choice between being informed that I am among the people of Paradise or that I am among the people of Hell, or becoming dust and ashes, I would choose to become dust and ashes."
سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ «لَوْ أَتَانِي آتٍ مِنْ رَبِّي ﷻ فَخَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يُخْبِرَنِي أَنِّي مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ أَنَا أَوْ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ وَبَيْنَ أَنْ أَصِيرَ تُرَابًا لَاخْتَرْتُ أَنْ أَصِيرَ تُرَابًا»
[Machine] "Mutarraf: I don't know what you are talking about when mentioning the contrast between me and the paradise."
مُطَرِّفٌ «لَا أَدْرِي مَا تَقُولُونَ حَالَ ذِكْرِ النَّارِ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ الْجَنَّةِ»
[Machine] "And by Allah, if our gathering in this matter is in accordance with what we have previously received from Allah in the previous book, then it is indeed a great blessing for us. And if Allah has granted us in what He has divided for us, then it is indeed a great blessing for us."
وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ كَانَ مَجْلِسُنَا هَذَا فِيمَا سَبَقَ لَنَا مِنَ اللَّهِ فِي الْكِتَابِ السَّابِقِ لَنِعْمَ مَا سُبِقَ لَنَا وَلَئِنْ كَانَ اللَّهُ أَعْطَانَاهُ فِيمَا قَسَمَ لَنَا لَنِعْمَ مَا قُسِمَ لَنَا
[Machine] "The righteousness of the heart is achieved through righteous actions, and righteous actions are accomplished with righteous intentions."
«صَلَاحُ قَلْبٍ بِصَلَاحِ عَمَلٍ وَصَلَاحُ عَمَلٍ بِصَلَاحِ نِيَّةٍ»
[Machine] I heard Muttarif say, "No two people have ever loved each other for the sake of Allah except that the better of the two loved their companion more intensely. I mentioned this to al-Hasan, and he said, 'It is true.'"
سَمِعْتُ مُطَرِّفًا يَقُولُ «مَا تَحَابَّ قَوْمٌ قَطُّ فِي اللَّهِ ﷻ إِلَّا كَانَ أَفْضَلَهُمَا أَشَدُّهُمَا حُبًّا لِصَاحِبِهِ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلْحَسَنِ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ»
[Machine] If the hope and fear of a believer were to be weighed, neither of them would outweigh the other.
«لَوْ وُزِنَ رَجَاءُ الْمُؤْمِنِ وَخَوْفُهُ مَا رَجَحَ أَحَدُهُمَا صَاحِبَهُ»
«فَلَعَلَّكَ لَا تَفْعَلُ»
اللَّهُ ﷻ «هَذَا عَبْدِي حَقًّا»
[Machine] To me, Mutarraf, the fear of the fire has prevented me from asking Allah for paradise. Then a man from the people of Madinah, known as 'Utbah, said, "So 'Utbah, what is it that Allah does not seek from His slaves?"
لِي مُطَرِّفٌ لَقَدْ حَالَ خَوْفُ أوْ ذِكْرُ النَّارِ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ أَنْ أَسْأَلَ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ وَثَمَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ يُقَالُ لَهُ عُتْبَةَ قَالَ فَقَالَ عُتْبَةُ مَا ابْتَغَى اللَّهُ هَذَا مِنْ عِبَادِهِ
[Machine] He used to wear a turban and ride horses, and whenever I approached him, it was a delight for the eyes.
كَانَ يَلْبَسُ الْمَطَارِفَ وَيَرْكَبُ الْخَيْلَ فَإِذَا أَفْضَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ لَقُرَّةُ عَيْنٍ
[Machine] Mutarrif said, "I considered what is beneficial and contains no harm, and so it is that the servant should be healed and express gratitude."
قَالَ مُطَرِّفٌ «نَظَرْتُ مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَا شَرَّ فِيهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ أَنْ يُعَافَى الْعَبْدُ فَيَشْكُرَ»
[Machine] That Mutarrif used to say, "There is no person except that they are foolish when it comes to their relationship with their Lord, except that some foolishness is less severe than others."
أَنَّ مُطَرِّفًا كَانَ يَقُولُ «مَا مِنَ النَّاسِ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا وَهُوَ أَحْمَقُ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ رَبِّهِ ﷻ غَيْرَ أَنَّ بَعْضَ الْحُمْقِ أَهْوَنُ مِنْ بَعْضٍ»
[Machine] While I was with a group of people, a man said, "These two men are from the people of Paradise." Then, the group member I was with looked at him with disapproval, and I recognized the dislike on his face. He then raised his gaze towards the sky and said, "O Allah, teach us and do not make us ignorant. O Allah, teach us and do not make us ignorant."
بَيْنَمَا أَنَا مَعَ مَذْعُورٍ إِذَا رَجُلٌ يَقُولُ هَذَانِ رَجُلَانِ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ مَذْعُورٌ فَعَرَفْتُ الْكَرَاهِيَةَ فِي وَجْهِهِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ بَصَرَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ «اللَّهُمَّ تَعْلَمُنَا وَلَا يَعْلَمُنَا اللَّهُمَّ تَعْلَمُنَا وَلَا يَعْلَمُنَا»
[Machine] "Matarif: O Allah, if You are not pleased with us, then forgive us."
مُطَرِّفٌ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ لَمْ تَرْضَ عَنَّا فَاعْفُ عَنَّا»
[Machine] "Mutarrif ibn Abdullah ibn Al-Sheheer used to say, 'Verily, the most beloved servants of Allah to Allah are the grateful and patient ones, who, when they are afflicted, remain patient, and when they are granted blessings, are grateful.'"
كَانَ مُطَرِّفُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ أَحَبَّ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ إِلَى اللَّهِ الشَّكُورُ الصَّابِرُ الَّذِي إِذَا ابْتُلِيَ صَبَرَ وَإِذَا أُعْطِيَ شَكَرَ»
[Machine] "He used to say, 'The virtue of knowledge is more beloved to Allah than the virtue of worship, and the best of your religion is self-control.'"
كَانَ [195] مُطَرِّفٌ يَقُولُ «فَضْلُ الْعِلْمِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ فَضْلِ الْعِبَادَةِ وَخَيْرُ دِينِكُمُ الْوَرَعُ»
عَنْ مَحَارِمِهِ»
[Machine] "That whoever passed by would take a grip, wasn't he going to the wall of the people?"
أَنَّ كُلَّ مَنْ مَرَّ أَخَذَ قَبْضَةً أَلَيْسَ كَانَ يَذْهَبُ حَائِطُ الْقَوْمِ؟»
[Machine] Mutarrif said, "Acquire knowledge and worship, and then withdraw."
قَالَ مُطَرِّفٌ «تَفَقَّهُوا وَتَعَبَّدُوا ثُمَّ اعْتَزِلُوا»
[Machine] Mutarrif bin Al-Shekhair said, "Surely, death has corrupted the people's enjoyment, so seek out a pleasure without death."
قَالَ مُطَرِّفُ بْنُ الشِّخِّيرِ «إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَوْتَ قَدْ أَفْسَدَ عَلَى النَّاسِ نَعِيمَهُمْ فَالْتَمِسُوا نَعِيمًا لَا مَوْتَ فِيهِ»
إِلَّا فَأَخَذَ ذَلِكَ فِيَّ
[Machine] From Qatada's statement, "Indeed in that are signs for every patient and grateful person" [Ibrahim 5]. He said, "Mutarrif used to say, 'What a great servant is the patient and grateful one, who shows gratitude when given something and remains patient when tested.' "
عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَوْلَهُ ﷻ {إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ شَكُورٍ} [إبراهيم 5] قَالَ كَانَ مُطَرِّفٌ يَقُولُ «نِعْمَ الْعَبْدُ الصَّبَّارُ الشَّكُورُ الَّذِي إِذَا أُعْطِيَ شَكَرَ وَإِذَا ابْتُلِيَ صَبَرَ»
[Machine] "To spend the night standing and wake up fascinated."
أَنْ أَبِيتَ قَائِمًا وَأُصْبِحَ مُعْجَبًا»
[Machine] "If I were to stand between paradise and hell, and someone called out to me: 'O transgressor, would you like me to inform you which of the two you belong to?' I would rather be silent and remain as lifeless ashes, for that would be more beloved to me than being told which of the two I am."
«لَوْ قَدْ وَقَفْتُ بَيْنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ وَنُودِيتُ يَا مُطَرِّفُ أَيَسُرُّكَ أَنْ نُخْبِرَكَ فِي أَيَّتِهِمَا أَنْتَ لَكَانَ أَنْ أَكُونَ رَمَادًا هَامِدًا أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُخْبَرَ فِي أَيِّهِمَا أَنَا»
[Machine] I remembered the importance of doing good deeds, as there are many, such as fasting and praying. And all of it is in the hands of Allah. You are unable to do anything except by asking Him and He will give you. So, the coming together of good deeds is supplication.
تَذَكَّرْتُ مَا جِمَاعُ الْخَيْرِ فَإِذَا الْخَيْرُ كَثِيرٌ الصَّوْمُ وَالصَّلَاةُ وَإِذَا هُوَ فِي يَدِ اللَّهِ ﷻ وَإِذَا أَنْتَ لَا تَقْدِرُ عَلَى مَا فِي يَدِ اللَّهِ ﷻ إِلَّا أَنْ تَسْأَلَهُ فَيُعْطِيَكَ فَإِذَا جِمَاعُ الْخَيْرِ الدُّعَاءُ
[Machine] "Oh Allah, do not let me forget Your remembrance and do not let me fall for Your deception, but instead say, 'Oh Allah, do not let me forget Your remembrance and I seek refuge in You from believing in Your deception until You grant me security."
أَنْ يَقُولَ اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُنْسِنِي ذِكْرَكَ وَلَا تُؤَمِّنِّي مَكْرَكَ وَلَكِنْ يَقُولُ «اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُنْسِنِي ذِكْرَكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ آمَنَ مَكْرَكَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَنْتَ تُؤَمِّنِّي»
[Machine] "He said that the one who makes excuses is a troublemaker and the one who blames others is angry."
أَنَّهُ قَالَ الْمُعَاذِرُ مُفَاجِرٌ وَالْمُعَاتِبُ مُغَاضِبٌ
[Machine] Mu'tarif used to say that when he entered his house, the utensils of his house would glorify with him.
كَانَ مُطَرِّفٌ إِذَا دَخَلَ بَيْتَهُ سَبَّحَتْ مَعَهُ آنِيَةُ بَيْتِهِ
[Machine] "The companionship of the righteous is better than solitude, and solitude is better than the company of evil people."
«جَلِيسُ الصَّالِحِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْوَحْدَةِ وَالْوَحْدَةُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ جَلِيسِ السُّوءِ»
[Machine] "So He illuminated for him like a lamp at the end of his stick."
«فَأَضَاءَ لَهُ مِثْلَ السِّرَاجِ عَلَى طَرَفِ سَوْطِهِ»
أَنْ يَظْفَرَ بِهِ
[Machine] "I found this person torn between Allah and Satan, so if Allah knows goodness in his heart, He will draw him towards it, and if Allah does not know goodness in him, He leaves him to himself. And whoever is left to himself is indeed perished."
«وَجَدْتُ هَذَا الْإِنْسَانَ مُلْقًى بَيْنَ اللَّهِ وَبَيْنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِنْ يَعْلَمِ اللَّهُ فِي قَلْبِهِ خَيْرًا يَجْبِذْهُ إِلَيْهِ وَإِنْ لَا يَعْلَمْ فِيهِ خَيْرًا وَكَّلَهُ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ وَمَنْ وَكَّلَهُ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ فَقَدْ هَلَكَ»
[Machine] Meeting my brothers is dearer to me than meeting my family. My family calls me "Oh, father! Oh, father!" and my brothers invoke Allah for me with a supplication in which I hope for good.
لِقَاءُ إِخْوَانِي أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ لِقَاءِ أَهْلِي أَهْلِي يَقُولُونَ يَا أَبِي يَا أَبِي وَإِخْوَانِي يُدْعَوْنَ اللَّهَ لِي بِدَعْوَةٍ أَرْجُو فِيهَا الْخَيْرَ
[Machine] I heard Ghaylan mention about Muttarif, he said, "I prefer to be healthy and be grateful rather than to be tested and be patient." Muttarif said, "I looked into gratitude and good health, and behold, they are the best of this world and the Hereafter."
سَمِعْتُ غَيْلَانَ يَذْكُرُ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ قَالَ لَأَنْ أُعَافَى فَأَشْكُرَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُبْتَلَى فَأَصْبِرَ قَالَ مُطَرِّفٌ نَظَرْتُ فِي الشُّكْرِ وَالْعَافِيَةِ فَإِذَا فِيهِمَا خَيْرُ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ
[Machine] He used to say, "Beware of people with bad intentions."
أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ «احْتَرِسُوا مِنَ النَّاسِ بِسُوءِ الظَّنِّ»
[Machine] "If anyone wants to know what he has with Allah, let him see what Allah has with him."
أَنْ يَعْلَمَ مَا لَهُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ مَا لِلَّهِ عِنْدَهُ»
[Machine] Mu'tarif said, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of the ruler and the evil that their pens produce. I seek refuge in You that I may say a word of obedience to You in which Your satisfaction is sought, seeking in it anything other than Your pleasure. I seek refuge in You that I may scheme anything that displeases You with regards to my affairs. I seek refuge in You that anyone should rejoice in what You have taught me from me. I seek refuge in You that I may become a lesson for others. I seek refuge in You that I may seek assistance in any of Your disobediences that afflict me."
قَالَ مُطَرِّفٌ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ السُّلْطَانِ وَشَرِّ مَا تَجْرِي بِهِ أَقْلَامُهُمْ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَقُولَ قَوْلًا مِنْ طَاعَتِكَ فِيهِ رِضَاكَ أَلْتَمِسُ فِيهِ شَيْئًا سِوَى وَجْهِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُدَبِّرَ مِنْ أَمْرِي شَيْئًا يَشِينُنِي عِنْدِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَحَدٌ سَعِدَ بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي مِنِّي وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَكُونَ عِبْرَةً لِغَيْرِي وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَسْتَعِينَ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ مَعَاصِيكَ مِنْ ضُرٍّ نَزَلَ بِي»
[Machine] "That you stay wakeful during the night and become amazed during the day."
أَنْ أَبِيتَ قَائِمًا وَأُصْبِحُ مُعْجَبًا»
[Machine] "To work for the present as if you were working for the hereafter."
أَنْ تَعْمَلَ لِلدُّنْيَا بِعَمَلِ الْآخِرَةِ»
[Machine] That Mutarrif dug a grave for himself in his home, and then he was carried until he read the Quran in it. When he died, he was buried in it. May Allah have mercy on him.
أَنَّ مُطَرِّفًا حَفَرَ لَهُ قَبْرًا فِي دَارِهِ ثُمَّ كَانَ يُحْمَلُ حَتَّى قَرَأَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنَ فَلَمَّا مَاتَ دُفِنَ فِيهِ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ
[Machine] He said to me, "Indeed, you will meet two men. One of them fasts and prays more than the other, and the other is more generous to the poor. They are both dear to Allah, but they are far away from each other." They said, "And how can that be, O Abu Bakr?" He said, "The one who is more cautious in his unlawful actions."
قَالَ لِي إِنَّكَ لَتَلْقَى الرَّجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَكْثَرُ صَوْمًا وَصَلَاةً وَالْآخَرُ أَكْرَمُهُمَا عَلَى اللَّهِ ﷻ بَوْنًا بَعِيدًا قَالُوا وَكَيْفَ يَكُونُ ذَلِكَ يَا أَبَا بَحْرٍ؟ قَالَ يَكُونُ أَوْرَعَهُمَا فِي حَرَامِهِ
[Machine] Mutarrif said, "Indeed, here there are people who claim that if they wanted, they would enter Paradise, and if they wanted, they would enter the Fire. So Allah has distanced them. If they enter the Fire, then I swear by Allah, Mutarrif, with three oaths that he will strive and never enter Paradise as a servant except for a servant whom Allah wills to enter deliberately."
قَالَ مُطَرِّفٌ «إِنَّ هَا هُنَا أَقْوَامًا يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّهُمْ إِنْ شَاءُوا دَخَلُوا الْجَنَّةَ وَإِنْ شَاءُوا دَخَلُوا النَّارَ فَأَبْعَدَهُمُ اللَّهُ إِنْ هُمْ دَخَلُوا النَّارَ ثُمَّ حَلَفَ مُطَرِّفٌ بِاللَّهِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيْمَانٍ يَجْتَهِدُ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ عَبْدٌ أَبَدًا إِلَّا عَبْدٌ شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُ إِيَّاهَا عَمْدًا»
[Machine] Mutarrif said, "The example of the son of Adam is like that of this stone, if it is struck with something, it moves, and if not, it remains a stone lying on the ground. Then he recited, 'And whoever does not have Allah as a light, for him there is no light.' [Quran 24:40]."
قَالَ مُطَرِّفٌ إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ ابْنِ آدَمَ مَثَلُ هَذَا الْحَجَرِ إِنْ حُرِّكَ بِشَيْءٍ تَحَرَّكَ وَإِلَّا إِنَّمَا هُوَ حَجَرٌ مُلْقًى فِي الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ {وَمَنْ لَمْ يَجْعَلِ اللَّهُ لَهُ نُورًا فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ نُورٍ} [النور 40]
[Machine] One of them said, "It is as if you were not in this world and you are still from the people of the Hereafter. Peace be upon you." The other said, "Afterwards, the last person to be killed will feel like they have already died. Peace be upon you." Mutarraf and his companion witnessed this situation, so one of them said to his companion, "What a great situation this is if it wasn't for me being among them." And the other said, "O Allah, do not reject them because of me."
أَحَدُهُمَا أَمَّا بَعْدُ كَأَنَّكَ بِالدُّنْيَا لَمْ تَكُنْ وَأَنْتَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْآخِرَةِ لَمْ تَزَلْ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ وَكَتَبَ الْآخَرُ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ آخِرَ مَنْ قُضِيَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَوْتُ كَأَنَّهُ قَدْ مَاتَ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ وَشَهِدَ مُطَرِّفٌ وَصَاحِبٌ لَهُ الْمَوْقِفَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا لِصَاحِبِهِ نِعْمَ الْمَوْقِفُ هَذَا لَوْلَا أَنِّي فِيهِمْ قَالَ وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَرُدَّهُمْ مِنْ أَجْلِي
[Machine] Indeed, good words around the throne have a resonance like the buzzing of bees, reminding their owner.
«إِنَّ الْكَلَامَ الطِّيبَ حَوْلَ الْعَرْشِ لَهُ دَوِيٌّ كَدَوِيِّ النَّحْلِ يَذْكُرُ صَاحِبَهُ»
[Machine] He used to say when this verse was recited to him, "If people knew the extent of Allah's forgiveness, mercy, and His overlooking their wrongdoings, their eyes would become overwhelmed with tears. And if people knew the extent of Allah's punishment, retribution, severity, and vengeance, they would never stop shedding tears, and food and drink would not benefit them."
أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا تُلِيَ عَلَيْهِ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُو مَغْفِرَةٍ لِلنَّاسِ عَلَى ظُلْمِهِمْ} [الرعد 6] قَالَ «فَلَوْ يَعْلَمُ النَّاسُ قَدْرَ مَغْفِرَةِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ وَتَجَاوُزِ اللَّهِ لَقَرَّتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُ النَّاسُ قَدْرَ عَذَابِ اللَّهِ وَنَكَالِ اللَّهِ وَبَأْسِ اللَّهِ وَنِقَمِ اللَّهِ مَا رَقَأَ لَهُمْ دَمْعٌ وَلَا انْتَفَعُوا بِطَعَامٍ وَلَا شَرَابٍ»
[Machine] "He heard what non other than Al-Hassan said, may Allah have mercy on him."
أَسْمَعَ مَا يَقُولُ غَيْرَ الْحَسَنِ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ»
[Machine] Mutaraff used to travel from his village to Basra, and his whip would light up for him. His brother would say to him, "If we told people about this, they would accuse us of lying." The one who accuses me of lying is the biggest liar. Abdullah informed us, Ali ibn Muslim informed us, Abdul Samad informed us, Hammad reported from Ali ibn Zaid, from Mutaraff, from Ka'b who said: "If the wind was held back from people for three [days], you would hear everything between the heavens and the earth."
كَانَ مُطَرِّفٌ يُقْبِلُ مِنْ ضَيْعَتِهِ إِلَى الْبَصْرَةِ فَيُضِيءُ لَهُ سَوْطُهُ فَيَقُولُ لَهُ أَخُوهُ إِنَّا لَوْ حَدَّثْنَا النَّاسَ بِكَذَا كَذَّبُونَا قَالَ الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِهِ أَكْذَبُ
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ يَعْنِي ابْنَ زَيْدٍ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، عَنْ كَعْبٍ قَالَ: «لَوْ حُبِسَتِ الرِّيحُ عَنِ النَّاسِ ثَلَاثًا لَأَنْتَنَ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ»
[Machine] I said to Muṭarrif, "Indeed, between me and the mosque are ruins with dry ruins in them, and in front of them is good land." He said, "The good land purifies the corrupt land."
قُلْتُ لِمُطَرِّفٍ إِنَّ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ الْمَسْجِدِ خَرَابَاتٍ فِيهَا عَذِرَاتٌ يَابِسَةٌ وَبَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا أَرْضٌ طَيِّبَةٌ فَقَالَ «الْأَرْضُ الطَّيِّبَةُ تُطَهِّرُ الْأَرْضَ الْخَبِيثَةَ»
[Machine] About Qatada's statement regarding the saying of Allah, "They used to sleep but little during the night." [Adh-Dhariyat 17], Al-Hasan said: "They would not sleep until they had performed the "Isha" prayer."
