Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn Chapter 0.09Contemplation

Regarding contemplating the greatness of Allah's creation, the fleeting nature of this world, the terrors of the Hereafter, and all related matters, as well as the self's shortcomings, disciplining it, and guiding it toward righteousness.

Allah the Exalted said, "I only admonish you with one thing: that you stand up for Allah, in pairs or individually, and then reflect" [Saba 46].

And He the Exalted said, "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides and reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): 'Our Lord, You have not created this aimlessly; exalted are You'" [Al Imran 190, 191].

And He the Exalted said, "Do they not look at the camels, how they are created? And at the sky, how it is raised up? And at the mountains, how they are set up? And at the earth, how it is spread out? So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder" [Ghashiyah 18-21].

And He the Exalted said, "Have they not traveled through the earth and observed" [Muhammad 10]. There are many such verses in this regard.

Among the hadiths is the previous one: "The wise one is the one who holds himself accountable."

[Machine] I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when he saw me, I heard him say, "This is the master of the Arabs." He then said, "When we descended, I came to him and started talking to him." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, the wealth that I have does not have any followers from guests, and my dependents have increased." He said, "The best wealth is 40 dinars and more, and woe to those who have 200 dinars, unless they give in its messengers, emergencies, and to the poor, and slaughter their fat camels to feed the contented and the needy." I said, "O Prophet of Allah, what noble manners and good conduct!" He said, "What do you do?" I said, "The camels graze, and people come and whoever wishes takes the lead of a she-camel and takes it away." He said, "What do you do with the weak camels?" I said, "I do not give away the young or the wounded she-camels." He said, "What is more beloved to you, your wealth or the wealth of your allies?" I said, "My wealth is more beloved to me than the wealth of my allies." He said, "Then, you have from your wealth what you have eaten and exhausted, or what you have worn and worn out, or what you have given away and spent, and otherwise they gather it and give it to you." I said, "By Allah, even if they remain, I will spend their number." Al-Hasan said, "So he did, by Allah." When death approached Qays, he said, "O my sons, take advice from me. I find nothing more sincere for you than what I advise you with when I die. So, honor your elders and do not dishonor your young ones, as people will laugh at you and disrespect you. And be wary of asking, as it is the end of a person's earning. For no one asks except that his earning is left behind. And when I die, do not wail over me, as I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding wailing. Shroud me in the same clothes that I used to pray and fast in. And when you bury me, do not bury me in a place where anyone can see me, for there were some disputes between me and Bakr ibn Wail in the time of ignorance, and I fear they may dig me up and do things that would harm your religion and worldly affairs." Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "He advised them during his life and he advised them in death."

ahmad-zuhd:371ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Sayyār > Jaʿfar

[Machine] I heard Abu Imran Al-Jawni recite this verse:

"Have you not heard of those who disputed with David about the wall, when they entered his private chamber and David was alarmed by them? They said, 'Do not be afraid. We are two adversaries, one of whom has wronged the other, so decide between us with truth and do not exceed [the right] and guide us to the sound path.' '[Surah Sad, 38: 21-22]

Then David said to them, "Sit down and let us judge the matter." And when they had sat down, he said, "One of you is the one who wronged the other, so if you want me to judge in your case fairly, bring me a hundred sheep as a fine. And when he had wronged him, he said, "Indeed, this is my brother. He has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, 'Entrust her to me,' and he convinced me with his speech."

David replied, "Surely, he has wronged you in demanding your ewe for his [flock of] ewes. And many partners oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and what few they are. And David became certain that We had tried him, so he said, "Indeed, I have wronged myself, and I bow in repentance to You, O Allah, so forgive me." And he bowed down in prostration for forty nights and days, barely raising his head [in prayer] except for the compulsory prayers. He said, "This is how I am now, and my forehead, hands, and knees are wounded."

Then an angel came to him and said, "O David, I am a messenger from your Lord. And He says to you, 'Raise your head, for I have forgiven you.'" David said, "O Lord, how can You forgive me when You are an equitable judge and the one who should not exceed the bounds of justice? How can You forgive me for the darkness of a man's wrongdoing?" Allah left him and did not answer his plea. Then another angel came to him and said, "O David, I am a messenger from your Lord. And He says to you that on the Day of Judgment, you and the son of Surayya will come to me, disputing a case, and I will rule in his favor against you. Then I will ask him to give me the ewe as a gift, and he will willingly give it to me. Then I will return it to you as a favor. And then I will forgive your sins." David said, "Now I know, O Lord, that You have forgiven me."
