10. Asceticism of Daʿūd (David)

ahmad-zuhd:359ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Abū al-Yamān > Ibn ʿAyyāsh > ʿUmārah b. Ghaziyyah al-Anṣārī > Ḥumayd b. ʿUbayd a freed slave of Banī al-Muʿallá > Thābit al-Bunānī > Anas b. Mālik

[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said to Jibril ﷺ : "Why have I never seen Mikael ﷺ laugh?" He said, "Mikael has not laughed since the Fire was created."

ahmad-zuhd:360ʿAbdullāh > Bī > al-Walīd b. Muslim > Ibn Jābir > 60 Ismāʿīl b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abū al-Muhājir

[Machine] That the Prophet Dawud ﷺ used to be blamed for crying too often, so he would say, "Leave me to cry before the Day of Crying; before the burning of the bones and the igniting of the flax; before the angels, rough and tough, are commanded to do what they are commanded and to carry out what they are instructed."

ahmad-zuhd:361ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿAbd al-Raḥman > al-Rabīʿ b. Ṣubayḥ > al-Ḥasan > Nabī Allāh Dāwud ʿAlayh al-Salām Ilahī Law

[Machine] "For every strand of my hair, there are two tongues that praise the night, the day, and all of eternity. I have never fulfilled the right of gratitude for a blessing."

ahmad-zuhd:362ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Jābir b. Zayd > al-Mughīrah b. ʿUyaynah

[Machine] David, ﷺ , said: "O Lord, has anyone from your creation spent this night longer in remembrance of you than me?" So Allah revealed to him: "Yes, the frog, and Allah sent down upon him: 'O family of David, work [i.e., sincerely] in gratitude.' And few of My servants are grateful." He said: "O Lord, how can I bear Your gratitude, while it is You who bestows favors upon me, then sustains me with blessings, and then increases me in favor upon favor? So the favors are from You, O Lord, and the gratitude is from You, so how can I bear Your gratitude, O Lord?" He said: "Now you have known Me, O David, in truth of My knowledge."

ahmad-zuhd:363ʿAbdullāh > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar al-Jushamī > Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān > al-Jaʿd > Balaghanā > Dāwud ﷺ

[Machine] "My God, what is the reward for one who consoles a sorrowful person, seeking only Your countenance?" He said, "His reward is that he will be dressed in the garment of piety." He said, "My God, what is the reward for one who attends a funeral, seeking only Your countenance?" He said, "His reward is that my angels will attend to him when he dies, and that I will pray for his soul among the souls." He said, "My God, what is the reward for one who supports an orphan or a widow?" Jafar asked, "I said to Abu Othman, who was bald, what does 'supports' mean?" He said, "He seeks nothing by it except Your countenance." He said, "His reward is that I will shade him under my throne on the day when there is no shade except for my shade." He said, "My God, what is the reward for one whose eyes overflow with tears from fear of You?" He said, "His reward is that I will grant him faith on the Day of the Greatest Terror, and I will protect his face from the heat of Hellfire."

ahmad-zuhd:364ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Sayyār > Jaʿfar > Mālik

[Machine] David ﷺ said, "O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, my hearing, my sight, my family, and even cold water."

ahmad-zuhd:366ʿAbdullāh > Hudbah b. Khālid > Ḥammād b. Salamah > ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib > ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr

[Machine] That David, ﷺ , a garden of his tears grew around him, so Allah revealed to him, "O David, do you want me to increase you in your kingdom and your offspring?" He said, "My Lord, I want you to forgive me."

ahmad-zuhd:367ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Ibrāhīm b. Khālid > ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Wahbb. Munabbih

[Machine] I heard Wahb bin Munabbih saying, "When Prophet Dawud (David), ﷺ , committed a sin, he did not eat any food except from what was moistened by his tears, and he did not drink any drink except mixed with his tears."

ahmad-zuhd:368ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Ibrāhīm b. Khālid > ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Wahbb. Munabbih

[Machine] "O Lord, I cannot bear the heat of your sun, so how can I bear the heat of your fire? O Lord, I cannot bear the sound of your mercy, meaning thunder, so how can I bear the sound of your punishment?"

[Machine] Prophet David ﷺ said, "O my Lord, do not burden me with wicked people, lest I become one of them."

ahmad-zuhd:370ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Ibrāhīm b. Khālid > ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Dariyyah > Balaghanī

[Machine] It was from the supplication of Prophet Dawud ﷺ , "O Allah, do not make me poor, lest I become unjust, and do not make me rich, lest I become arrogant."

ahmad-zuhd:371ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Sayyār > Jaʿfar

[Machine] I heard Abu Imran Al-Jawni recite this verse:

"Have you not heard of those who disputed with David about the wall, when they entered his private chamber and David was alarmed by them? They said, 'Do not be afraid. We are two adversaries, one of whom has wronged the other, so decide between us with truth and do not exceed [the right] and guide us to the sound path.' '[Surah Sad, 38: 21-22]

Then David said to them, "Sit down and let us judge the matter." And when they had sat down, he said, "One of you is the one who wronged the other, so if you want me to judge in your case fairly, bring me a hundred sheep as a fine. And when he had wronged him, he said, "Indeed, this is my brother. He has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, 'Entrust her to me,' and he convinced me with his speech."

David replied, "Surely, he has wronged you in demanding your ewe for his [flock of] ewes. And many partners oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and what few they are. And David became certain that We had tried him, so he said, "Indeed, I have wronged myself, and I bow in repentance to You, O Allah, so forgive me." And he bowed down in prostration for forty nights and days, barely raising his head [in prayer] except for the compulsory prayers. He said, "This is how I am now, and my forehead, hands, and knees are wounded."

Then an angel came to him and said, "O David, I am a messenger from your Lord. And He says to you, 'Raise your head, for I have forgiven you.'" David said, "O Lord, how can You forgive me when You are an equitable judge and the one who should not exceed the bounds of justice? How can You forgive me for the darkness of a man's wrongdoing?" Allah left him and did not answer his plea. Then another angel came to him and said, "O David, I am a messenger from your Lord. And He says to you that on the Day of Judgment, you and the son of Surayya will come to me, disputing a case, and I will rule in his favor against you. Then I will ask him to give me the ewe as a gift, and he will willingly give it to me. Then I will return it to you as a favor. And then I will forgive your sins." David said, "Now I know, O Lord, that You have forgiven me."

ahmad-zuhd:372ʿAbdullāh > Bī > ʿAbdullāh b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿUmar b. Kaysān > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Būdharayh

[Machine] In the book of the Psalms of David, there are three letters of blessing for those who do not walk in the path of the wrongdoers, and blessed are those who do not follow the commands of the oppressors, and blessed are those who do not associate with the lazy.

[Machine] Allah inspired unto David, "O David, love Me and love those who love Me. And make My worship beloved to My servants." David said, "O Lord, how is this? [Machine] That the Prophet Dawood ﷺ ordered a caller to call for a congregational prayer, so the people came out, knowing that it would be a day of advice, discipline, and supplication. When he arrived at his place, he said, "O Allah, forgive us," and then he left. The last people facing the first people asked them, "What's wrong with you?" They said, "Indeed, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ only made one supplication, then left." They said, "Glory be to Allah! We were hoping that this day would be a day of worship, supplication, advice, and discipline, but he only made one supplication." They said, "So Allah revealed to him to convey this to his people, for they have surpassed your supplication. Indeed, whoever I forgive, I will rectify his affairs in this world and the hereafter."
