"Whoever fasts Ramadan, performs the Salat, performs Hajj to the House" - I do not know whether he mentioned Zakat or not - "except that it is binding on Allah that He forgive him, whether he emigrated in the cause of Allah, or remained in his land in which he was born." Mu'adh said: "Should I not inform the people of this?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave the people to do deeds, for verily in Paradise there are a hundred levels, what is between every two levels is like what is between the heavens and the earth. Al-Firdaus is the highest of Paradise and its most expansive, and above that is the Throne of Ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful), and from it the rivers of Paradise are made to flow forth. So when you ask Allah, ask Him for Al-Firdaus." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2530)

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever prays these five prayers and fasts in the month of Ramadan, I do not know if he has mentioned his charity or not. It is the right of Allah to forgive him whether he emigrates or stays where his mother bore him." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, shouldn't I go out and announce it to the people?" He said, "No, leave the people to do their work, for paradise has one hundred degrees, and between each degree is like the distance between heaven and earth. The highest of its degrees is Al-Firdaus."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever believes in Allah and His Messenger, establishes prayer, gives zakat, and fasts in Ramadan, it is the right of Allah to admit him into Paradise, whether he migrated in the path of Allah or died in his birthplace." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, should we not inform the people about this?" He said, "In Paradise, there are one hundred degrees between each two degrees, as there is between the heaven and the earth. Allah has prepared it for the mujahideen in His cause. So, when you ask Allah, ask for Al-Firdaus, for it is the middle and highest part of Paradise, and from it, the rivers of Paradise gush forth, and above it is the Throne of the Most Merciful. He said, "And Abu Al-Azhar narrated to us, Yunus bin Muhammad narrated to us. He said, "So, Fuwlayh narrated to us this Hadith, from Hilal bin Ali, from 'Ata' bin Yasar, from Abu Hurairah, in a similar manner, and he did not have any doubt."

When she got up to return, Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up with her and accompanied her, and when he reached near the gate of the Mosque close to the door (of the house) of Um Salama, the wife of the Prophet, two Ansari men passed by them and greeted Allah's Apostle and then went away. Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed them saying, "Don't hurry! (She is my wife)," They said, "Glorified be Allah! O Messenger of Allah ﷺ (You are far away from any suspicion)," and his saying was hard on them. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Satan circulates in the mind of a person as blood does (in his body). I was afraid that Satan might put some (evil) thoughts in your minds."

The wife of the Prophet ﷺ that she went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in Iʿtikaf (staying in the mosque) during the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. She spoke to him for an hour (a while) at night and then she got up to return home. The Prophet ﷺ got up to accompany her, and when they reached the gate of the mosque opposite the dwelling place of Um Salama, the wife of the Prophet, two Ansari men passed by, and greeting Messenger of Allah ﷺ , they quickly went ahead. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "Do not be in a hurry She is Safiya, the daughter of Huyai." They said, "Subhan Allah! O Messenger of Allah ﷺ (how dare we suspect you)." That was a great thing for both of them. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Satan runs in the body of Adam's son (i.e. man) as his blood circulates in it, and I was afraid that he (Satan) might insert an evil thought in your hearts."

Safiya, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ told me that she went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ to visit him in the mosque while he was in Iʿtikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. She had a talk with him for a while, then she got up in order to return home. The Prophet ﷺ accompanied her. When they reached the gate of the mosque, opposite the door of Um-Salama, two Ansari men were passing by and they greeted Allah's Apostle . He told them: Do not run away! And said, "She is (my wife) Safiya bint Huyai." Both of them said, "Subhan Allah, (How dare we think of any evil) O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" And they felt it. The Prophet said (to them), "Satan reaches everywhere in the human body as blood reaches in it, (everywhere in one's body). I was afraid lest Satan might insert an evil thought in your minds." bukhari:2010Ibn Shihāb > ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAbd al-Qārī > Kharajt

I went out in the company of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb one night in Ramaḍān to the mosque and found the people praying in different groups. A man praying alone or a man praying with a little group behind him. So, ʿUmar said: In my opinion, it would better to collect them under the leadership of one reciter. So, he made up his mind to congregate them behind Ubay b. Kaʿb. Then on another night, I went again in his company and the people were praying behind their reciter. On that, ʿUmar remarked: What an excellent *bidʿah* (innovation) this is; but the prayer which they do not perform and sleep at its time is better than the one they are offering. ˹What˺ he meant is the prayer in the last part of the night, (i.e. Tahajjud) ˹In those days˺ people used to pray in the early part of the night.

malik:6-3Mālik > Ibn Shihāb > ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAbd al-Qārī

Malik related to me from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn az-Zubayr that Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari said, "I went out with Umar ibn alKhattab in Ramadan to the mosque and the people there were spread out in groups. Some men were praying by themselves, whilst others were praying in small groups. Umar said, 'By Allah! It would be better in my opinion if these people gathered behind one reciter.' So he gathered them behind Ubayy ibn Kab. Then I went out with him another night and the people were praying behind their Qur'an reciter. Umar said, 'How excellent this new way is, but what you miss while you are asleep is better than what you watch in prayer.' He meant the end of the night, and people used to watch the beginning of the night in prayer."

The Prophet ﷺ left Medina (for Mecca) in the company of ten-thousand (Muslim warriors) in (the month of) Ramadan, and that was eight and a half years after his migration to Medina. He and the Muslims who were with him, proceeded on their way to Mecca. He was fasting and they were fasting, but when they reached a place called Al-Kadid which was a place of water between 'Usfan and Kudaid, he broke his fast and so did they. (Az-Zuhri said, "One should take the last action of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and leave his early action (while taking a verdict.")

I used to sit with Ibn 'Abbas and he made me sit on his sitting place. He requested me to stay with him in order that he might give me a share from his property. So I stayed with him for two months. Once he told (me) that when the delegation of the tribe of 'Abdul Qais came to the Prophet, the Prophet ﷺ asked them, "Who are the people (i.e. you)? (Or) who are the delegate?" They replied, "We are from the tribe of Rabi'a." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to them, "Welcome! O people (or O delegation of 'Abdul Qais)! Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We cannot come to you except in the sacred month and there is the infidel tribe of Mudar intervening between you and us. So please order us to do something good (religious deeds) so that we may inform our people whom we have left behind (at home), and that we may enter Paradise (by acting on them)." Then they asked about drinks (what is legal and what is illegal). The Prophet ﷺ ordered them to do four things and forbade them from four things. He ordered them to believe in Allah Alone and asked them, "Do you know what is meant by believing in Allah Alone?" They replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "It means: 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Messenger of Allah ﷺ. 2. To offer prayers perfectly 3. To pay the Zakat (obligatory charity) 4. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan. 5. And to pay Al-Khumus (one fifth of the booty to be given in Allah's Cause). Then he forbade them four things, namely, Hantam, Dubba,' Naqir Ann Muzaffat or Muqaiyar; (These were the names of pots in which Alcoholic drinks were prepared) (The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the container of wine and he meant the wine itself). I was an interpreter between the people and Ibn ʿAbbas. Once Ibn ʿAbbas said that a delegation of the tribe of ʿAbdul Qais came to the Prophet ﷺ who asked them, "Who are the people (i.e. you)? (Or) who are the delegates?" They replied, "We are from the tribe of Rabiʿa." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to them, "Welcome, O people (or said, "O delegation (of ʿAbdul Qais).") Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "We have come to you from a distant place and there is the tribe of the infidels of Mudar intervening between you and us and we cannot come to you except in the sacred month. So please order us to do something good (religious deeds) and that we may also inform our people whom we have left behind (at home) and that we may enter Paradise (by acting on them.)" The Prophet ordered them to do four things, and forbade them from four things. He ordered them to believe in Allah Alone, the Honorable the Majestic and said to them, "Do you know what is meant by believing in Allah Alone?" They replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "(That means to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His Apostle, to offer prayers perfectly, to pay Zakat, to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan, (and) to pay Al-Khumus (one fifth of the booty to be given in Allah's cause)." Then he forbade them four things, namely Ad-Dubba.' Hantam, Muzaffat (and) An-Naqir or Muqaiyar (These were the names of pots in which alcoholic drinks used to be prepared). The Prophet ﷺ further said, "Memorize them (these instructions) and tell them to the people whom you have left behind."

I said to Ibn ʿAbbas, "I have an earthenware pot containing Nabidh (i.e. water and dates or grapes) for me, and I drink of it while it is sweet. If I drink much of it and stay with the people for a long time, I get afraid that they may discover it (for I will appear as if I were drunk). Ibn ʿAbbas said, "A delegation of ʿAbdul Qais came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Welcome, O people! Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! There are the Mudar pagans between you and us, so we cannot come to you except in the sacred Months. So please teach us some orders on acting upon which we will enter Paradise. Besides, we will preach that to our people who are behind us." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I order you to do four things and forbid you from four things (I order you): To believe in Allah...Do you know what is to believe in Allah? That is to testify that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah: (I order you also to offer prayers perfectly to pay Zakat; and to fast the month of Ramadan and to give the Khumus (i.e. one-fifth of the booty) (for Allah's Sake). I forbid you from four other things (i.e. the wine that is prepared in) Ad-Dubba, An-Naquir, Az-Hantam and Al-Muzaffat. (See Hadith No. 50 Vol. 1)

When the delegate of ʿAbd Al-Qais came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "Who are the delegate?" They said, "The delegate are from the tribe of Rabiʿa." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Welcome, O the delegate, and welcome! O people! Neither you will have any disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "O Allah's Apostle! They also asked (the Prophet) about drinks. He forbade them from four things and ordered them to do four things. He ordered them to believe in Allah, and asked them, "Do you know what is meant by belief in Allah?" They said, "Allah and His Apostle know best." He said, ''To testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, the One, Who has no partners with Him, and that Muhammad is Messenger of Allah ﷺ; and to offer prayers perfectly and to pay Zakat." (the narrator thinks that fasting in Ramadan is included), "and to give one-fifth of the war booty (to the state)." Then he forbade four (drinking utensils): Ad-Duba', Al56 Hantam, Al-Mazaffat and An-Naqir, or probably, Al-Muqaiyar. And then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Remember all these things by heart and preach it to those whom you have left behind."

[Machine] A delegation from the tribe of Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , among them was al-Ashajj, the brother of Banu Asar. They said, "O Prophet of Allah, we are not from the tribe of Rabi'ah and there are unbelievers from the tribe of Mudhar between us and you. We can only come to you during the sacred month. So, give us a command by which if we act upon it, we will enter Paradise and call those after us to it." He ordered them with four things and prohibited them from four things. He ordered them to worship Allah alone and not associate anything with Him, to fast during Ramadan, to perform Hajj to the Kaaba, and to give one-fifth of the spoils of war. He prohibited them from four things - drinking from wineskins, bladder, jug, and cup. They asked, "In what shall we drink then, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Drink from the leather water container that has been tied."

We can only come to you during the sacred month. So inform us of an action that will allow us to enter Paradise and we can inform those behind us. They also asked him about certain drinks, so he ordered them to consume four and prohibited them from four others. He ordered them to have faith in Allah, and they said, 'We know that Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'The testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting Ramadan, and giving one-fifth of the spoils of war. He also prohibited them from drinking out of pots and pipes made of the skin of dead animals.' He said, 'Keep them in mind and inform those who are behind you.'"

"I said to Ibn 'Abbas that my grandmother makes Nabidh in an earthenware jar and it is sweet. If I drink a lot of it and sit with people, I am worried that they will find out. He said: 'The delegation of 'Abdul-Qais came to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he said: Welcome to a delegation that is not disgraced or filled with regret. They said: O Messenger of Allah, the idolators are between us and you, and we can only reach you during the sacred months. Tell us of something which, if we do it, we will enter Paradise, and we can tell it to those whom we left behind. He said: I will enjoin three things upon you, and forbid four things to you. I order you to have faith in Allah, and do you know what faith in Allah is? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: (It means) testifying that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, establishing Salah, paying Zakah and giving one-fifth (the Khums) of the spoils of war. The Prophet ﷺ further said (to them): "Memorize them (these instructions) and convey them to the people whom you have left behind." (Using translation from Bukhārī 53)

He welcomed the delegation, saying, 'Welcome to the delegation, which does not include the Khazay and the Nadamah.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we are a group from Rabi'ah, and we have come to you from a far place. There is an unbelieving tribe, Mudhar, between us and you. We only come to you during the sacred month. So, give us some instructions that we can convey to those behind us and that will help us enter Paradise.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I command you to adhere to four things and forbid you from four things. I command you to have faith in Allah alone. Do you know what having faith in Allah means? It is to bear witness that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to pay Zakah, to fast in Ramadan, and to give one-fifth of the spoils. I forbid you from four things: from using animals with saddles and bells, from branding the face of animals, from slashing the ears of animals, and from cutting their tails. And sometimes, he ﷺ added, 'from docking their ears.'" So, remember and convey this to those behind you.

The Prophet ﷺ observed the fast on the 10th of Muharram ('Ashura), and ordered (Muslims) to fast on that day, but when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was prescribed, the fasting of the 'Ashura' was abandoned. ʿAbdullah did not use to fast on that day unless it coincided with his routine fasting by chance.

Fasting was observed on the day of 'Ashura' (i.e. 10th of Muharram) by the people of the Pre-lslamic Period. But when (the order of compulsory fasting) in the month of Ramadan was revealed, the Prophet said, "It is up to one to fast on it (i.e. day of 'Ashura') or not."
