Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'n Nadr, the mawla of Umar ibn Ubaydullah, from Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast for so long that we thought he would never stop fasting, and he would go without fasting for so long that we thought he would never fast again. I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast for a complete month except for Ramadan, and I never saw him do more fasting in any one month than he did in Shaban.'

Institutionalization of Tarawih by Umar ᴿᴬ

bukhari:2010Ibn Shihāb > ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAbd al-Qārī > Kharajt

I went out in the company of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb one night in Ramaḍān to the mosque and found the people praying in different groups. A man praying alone or a man praying with a little group behind him. So, ʿUmar said: In my opinion, it would better to collect them under the leadership of one reciter. So, he made up his mind to congregate them behind Ubay b. Kaʿb. Then on another night, I went again in his company and the people were praying behind their reciter. On that, ʿUmar remarked: What an excellent *bidʿah* (innovation) this is; but the prayer which they do not perform and sleep at its time is better than the one they are offering. ˹What˺ he meant is the prayer in the last part of the night, (i.e. Tahajjud) ˹In those days˺ people used to pray in the early part of the night.

malik:6-3Mālik > Ibn Shihāb > ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAbd al-Qārī

Malik related to me from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn az-Zubayr that Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari said, "I went out with Umar ibn alKhattab in Ramadan to the mosque and the people there were spread out in groups. Some men were praying by themselves, whilst others were praying in small groups. Umar said, 'By Allah! It would be better in my opinion if these people gathered behind one reciter.' So he gathered them behind Ubayy ibn Kab. Then I went out with him another night and the people were praying behind their Qur'an reciter. Umar said, 'How excellent this new way is, but what you miss while you are asleep is better than what you watch in prayer.' He meant the end of the night, and people used to watch the beginning of the night in prayer."

Then he called for a container of water and drank it during the day for the people to see, and he broke his fast until he reached Makkah." Ibn Abbas used to say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast while traveling, but he also used to break his fast. So whoever wished, would fast, and whoever wished, would break their fast."

The Prophet ﷺ left Medina (for Mecca) in the company of ten-thousand (Muslim warriors) in (the month of) Ramadan, and that was eight and a half years after his migration to Medina. He and the Muslims who were with him, proceeded on their way to Mecca. He was fasting and they were fasting, but when they reached a place called Al-Kadid which was a place of water between 'Usfan and Kudaid, he broke his fast and so did they. (Az-Zuhri said, "One should take the last action of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and leave his early action (while taking a verdict.")

I was an interpreter between the people and Ibn ʿAbbas. Once Ibn ʿAbbas said that a delegation of the tribe of ʿAbdul Qais came to the Prophet ﷺ who asked them, "Who are the people (i.e. you)? (Or) who are the delegates?" They replied, "We are from the tribe of Rabiʿa." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to them, "Welcome, O people (or said, "O delegation (of ʿAbdul Qais).") Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "We have come to you from a distant place and there is the tribe of the infidels of Mudar intervening between you and us and we cannot come to you except in the sacred month. So please order us to do something good (religious deeds) and that we may also inform our people whom we have left behind (at home) and that we may enter Paradise (by acting on them.)" The Prophet ordered them to do four things, and forbade them from four things. He ordered them to believe in Allah Alone, the Honorable the Majestic and said to them, "Do you know what is meant by believing in Allah Alone?" They replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "(That means to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His Apostle, to offer prayers perfectly, to pay Zakat, to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan, (and) to pay Al-Khumus (one fifth of the booty to be given in Allah's cause)." Then he forbade them four things, namely Ad-Dubba.' Hantam, Muzaffat (and) An-Naqir or Muqaiyar (These were the names of pots in which alcoholic drinks used to be prepared). The Prophet ﷺ further said, "Memorize them (these instructions) and tell them to the people whom you have left behind."

If I drink much of it and stay with the people for a long time, I get afraid that they may discover it (for I will appear as if I were drunk). Ibn ʿAbbas said, "A delegation of ʿAbdul Qais came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Welcome, O people! Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Besides, we will preach that to our people who are behind us." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Welcome, O the delegate, and welcome! O people! Neither you will have any disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "O Allah's Apostle! They also asked (the Prophet) about drinks. He forbade them from four things and ordered them to do four things. He ordered them to believe in Allah, and asked them, "Do you know what is meant by belief in Allah?" They said, "Allah and His Apostle know best." He said, ''To testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, the One, Who has no partners with Him, and that Muhammad is Messenger of Allah ﷺ; and to offer prayers perfectly and to pay Zakat." (the narrator thinks that fasting in Ramadan is included), "and to give one-fifth of the war booty (to the state)." Then he forbade four (drinking utensils): Ad-Duba', Al56 Hantam, Al-Mazaffat and An-Naqir, or probably, Al-Muqaiyar. And then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Remember all these things by heart and preach it to those whom you have left behind."

I was sitting with Ibn Abbas and he made me sit on his sitting place. He requested me to stay with him in order that he might give me a share from his property. So I stayed with him for two months. Once he told (me) that when the delegation of the tribe of 'Abdul Qais came to the Prophet, the Prophet ﷺ asked them, "Who are the people (i.e. you)? (Or) who are the delegate?" They replied, "We are from the tribe of Rabi'a." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to them, "Welcome! O people (or O delegation of 'Abdul Qais)! Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." So please order us to do something good (religious deeds) so that we may inform our people whom we have left behind (at home), and that we may enter Paradise (by acting on them)." Then they asked about drinks (what is legal and what is illegal). The Prophet ﷺ ordered them to do four things and forbade them from four things.

He ordered them to believe in Allah Alone and asked them, "Do you know what is meant by believing in Allah Alone?" They replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "It means: 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Messenger of Allah ﷺ. 2. To offer prayers perfectly 3. To pay the Zakat (obligatory charity) 4. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan. 5. And to pay Al-Khumus (one fifth of the booty to be given in Allah's Cause).

Then he forbade them four things, namely, Hantam, Dubba,' Naqir Ann Muzaffat or Muqaiyar; (These were the names of pots in which Alcoholic drinks were prepared) (The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the container of wine and he meant the wine itself). The Prophet ﷺ further said (to them): "Memorize them (these instructions) and convey them to the people whom you have left behind."

[Machine] A delegation from the tribe of Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , among them was al-Ashajj, the brother of Banu Asar. They said, "O Prophet of Allah, we are not from the tribe of Rabi'ah and there are unbelievers from the tribe of Mudhar between us and you. We can only come to you during the sacred month. So, give us a command by which if we act upon it, we will enter Paradise and call those after us to it." He ordered them with four things and prohibited them from four things. He ordered them to worship Allah alone and not associate anything with Him, to fast during Ramadan, to perform Hajj to the Kaaba, and to give one-fifth of the spoils of war. He prohibited them from four things - drinking from wineskins, bladder, jug, and cup. They asked, "In what shall we drink then, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Drink from the leather water container that has been tied."

[Machine] I heard Ibn Abbas say, "When the delegation of Abd al-Qays arrived to the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , he asked, 'From which tribe or people is this delegation?' They replied, 'From the tribe of Rabi'ah.' He said, 'Welcome to the delegation, or people, who are not treacherous nor deceitful.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we have come to you from a distant and dangerous place, and between us and you is the territory of the disbelievers of Mudar. We can only come to you during the sacred month. So inform us of an action that will allow us to enter Paradise and we can inform those behind us. They also asked him about certain drinks, so he ordered them to consume four and prohibited them from four others. He ordered them to have faith in Allah, and they said, 'We know that Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'The testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting Ramadan, and giving one-fifth of the spoils of war. He prohibited them from predatory animals, such as the dog and the eagle, and from slaughtered animals in the name of their idols. He also prohibited them from drinking out of pots and pipes made of the skin of dead animals.' He said, 'Keep them in mind and inform those who are behind you.'"

I used to sit with Ibn 'Abbas and he made me sit on his sitting place. Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We cannot come to you except in the sacred month and there is the infidel tribe of Mudar intervening between you and us. So please order us to do something good (religious deeds) so that we may inform our people whom we have left behind (at home), and that we may enter Paradise (by acting on them)." Then they asked about drinks (what is legal and what is illegal). The Prophet ﷺ further said (to them): "Memorize them (these instructions) and convey them to the people whom you have left behind." (Using translation from Bukhārī 53)

[Machine] I heard Ibn Abbas saying, "When the delegation of Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he asked, 'From which tribe are you?' They replied, 'From Rabi'ah.' He welcomed the delegation, saying, 'Welcome to the delegation, which does not include the Khazay and the Nadamah.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we are a group from Rabi'ah, and we have come to you from a far place. There is an unbelieving tribe, Mudhar, between us and you. We only come to you during the sacred month. So, give us some instructions that we can convey to those behind us and that will help us enter Paradise.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I command you to adhere to four things and forbid you from four things. I command you to have faith in Allah alone. Do you know what having faith in Allah means? It is to bear witness that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to pay Zakah, to fast in Ramadan, and to give one-fifth of the spoils. I forbid you from four things: from using animals with saddles and bells, from branding the face of animals, from slashing the ears of animals, and from cutting their tails. And sometimes, he ﷺ added, 'from docking their ears.'" So, remember and convey this to those behind you.

The Prophet ﷺ observed the fast on the 10th of Muharram ('Ashura), and ordered (Muslims) to fast on that day, but when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was prescribed, the fasting of the 'Ashura' was abandoned. ʿAbdullah did not use to fast on that day unless it coincided with his routine fasting by chance.

A Bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Tell me of such a deed as will make me enter Paradise, if I do it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Worship Allah, and worship none along with Him, offer the (five) prescribed compulsory prayers perfectly, pay the compulsory Zakat, and fast the month of Ramadan." The Bedouin said, "By Him, in Whose Hands my life is, I will not do more than this."

When he (the Bedouin) left, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever likes to see a man of Paradise, then he may look at this man." Narrated Abu Zur'a: From the Prophet ﷺ the same as above.

Messenger of Allah, direct me to a deed by which I may be entitled to enter Paradise. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) remarked: You worship Allah and never associate anything with Him, establish the obligatory prayer, and pay the Zakat which is incumbent upon you, and observe the fast of Ramadan. He (the bedouin) said: By Him in Whose hand is my life, I will never add anything to it, nor will I diminish anything from it.

[Machine] A Bedouin man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, guide me to a deed that if I perform it, I will enter Paradise." The Prophet replied, "Worship Allah alone, without associating any partners with Him, establish the obligatory prayers, give the obligatory charity, and fast during the month of Ramadan." The Bedouin man said, "By the One who has sent you with the truth, I will not increase or decrease upon this." Then, as he turned to leave, the Prophet said, "Whoever wants to see a man from the people of Paradise, let him look at this man."

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered to observe fast (on 'Ashura) before the fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory. But when it became obligatory, then he who wished fasted on the day of Ashura, and he who wished did not observe it (on that day).

Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned Ramadan and said, "Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadan), and do not give up fasting till you see the crescent (of Shawwal), but if the sky is overcast (if you cannot see it), then act on estimation (i.e. count Sha'ban as 30 days).
