Sa'eed bin Abi Sa'eed Al-Maqburi narrated that Abu Salamah informed him that he had asked Aishah: "How was the Salat of Messenger of Allah (A) [at night] during Ramadan?" She said: "Messenger of Allah (S) would pray - neither in Ramadan nor in any other month - more than eleven Rak'ah. He would pray four, and do not ask about their excellence or length, then he would pray four, and do not ask about their excellence or length, then he would pray three." Aishah said: "I asked: 'O Messenger of Allah! Do you sleep before having performed Witr?" He said: 'O Aishah! Indeed my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.'"

Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Ṣaḥīḥ.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Said ibn Abi Said al-Maqburi from Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf that he asked A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ what the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was like during Ramadan. She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not go above eleven rakas in Ramadan or at any other time. He prayed four - do not ask me about their beauty or length. Then he prayed another four - do not ask me about their beauty and length. Then he prayed three." A'isha continued, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, are you sleeping before you do the witr?' He said, A'isha, my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.' "

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not observe either in Ramadan or in other months more than eleven rak'ahs (of the night prayer). He (in the first instance) observed four rak'ahs. Ask not about their excellence and their length (i. e. these were matchless in perfection and length). He again observed four rak'ahs, and ask not about their excellence and their length. He would then observe three rak'ahs (of the Witr prayer). 'A'isha again said: I said: Messenger of Allah, do you sleep before observing the Witr prayer? He said: O 'A'isha, my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep. (Using translation from Muslim 738a)

One night Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the prayer in the Mosque and the people followed him. The next night he also offered the prayer and too many people gathered. On the third and the fourth nights more people gathered, but Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not come out to them. In the morning he said, "I saw what you were doing and nothing but the fear that it (i.e. the prayer) might be enjoined on you, stopped me from coming to you." And that happened in the month of Ramadan.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn az- Zubayr from A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in the mosque one night and people prayed behind him. Then he prayed the next night and there were more people. Then they gathered on the third or fourth night and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not come out to them. Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed them saying, "Don't hurry! (She is my wife)," They said, "Glorified be Allah! The wife of the Prophet ﷺ that she went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in Iʿtikaf (staying in the mosque) during the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. She spoke to him for an hour (a while) at night and then she got up to return home. The Prophet ﷺ got up to accompany her, and when they reached the gate of the mosque opposite the dwelling place of Um Salama, the wife of the Prophet, two Ansari men passed by, and greeting Messenger of Allah ﷺ , they quickly went ahead. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "Do not be in a hurry She is Safiya, the daughter of Huyai." They said, "Subhan Allah! O Messenger of Allah ﷺ (how dare we suspect you)." That was a great thing for both of them. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Satan runs in the body of Adam's son (i.e. man) as his blood circulates in it, and I was afraid that he (Satan) might insert an evil thought in your hearts."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ deputed me to keep Sadaqat (al-Fitr) of Ramadan. A comer came and started taking handfuls of the foodstuff (of the Sadaqa) (stealthily). I took hold of him and said, "By Allah, I will take you to Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He said, "I am needy and have many dependents, and I am in great need." I released him, and in the morning Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, "What did your prisoner do yesterday?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The person complained of being needy and of having many dependents, so, I pitied him and let him go." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, he told you a lie and he will be coming again." I believed that he would show up again as Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told me that he would return.
So, I waited for him watchfully. When he (showed up and) started stealing handfuls of foodstuff, I caught hold of him again and said, "I will definitely take you to Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "Leave me, for I am very needy and have many dependents. I promise I will not come back again." I pitied him and let him go. In the morning Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, "What did your prisoner do." I replied, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He complained of his great need and of too many dependents, so I took pity on him and set him free." Allah's Apostle said, "Verily, he told you a lie and he will return."
I waited for him attentively for the third time, and when he (came and) started stealing handfuls of the foodstuff, I caught hold of him and said, "I will surely take you to Messenger of Allah ﷺ as it is the third time you promise not to return, yet you break your promise and come." He said, "(Forgive me and) I will teach you some words with which Allah will benefit you." I asked, "What are they?" He replied, "Whenever you go to bed, recite "Ayat-al-Kursi"-- 'Allahu la ilaha illa huwa-l-Haiy-ul Qaiyum' till you finish the whole verse. (If you do so), Allah will appoint a guard for you who will stay with you and no satan will come near you till morning. " So, I released him. In the morning, Allah's Apostle asked, "What did your prisoner do yesterday?" I replied, "He claimed that he would teach me some words by which Allah will benefit me, so I let him go." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What are they?" I replied, "He said to me, 'Whenever you go to bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi from the beginning to the end ---- Allahu la ilaha illa huwa-lHaiy-ul-Qaiyum----.' He further said to me, '(If you do so), Allah will appoint a guard for you who will stay with you, and no satan will come near you till morning.' (Abu Huraira or another sub-narrator) added that they (the companions) were very keen to do good deeds. The Prophet ﷺ said, "He really spoke the truth, although he is an absolute liar. Do you know whom you were talking to, these three nights, O Abu Huraira?" Abu Huraira said, "No." He said, "It was Satan."

Ibn ʿUmar said, "The Prophet ﷺ made incumbent on every male or female, free man or slave, the payment of one Sa' of dates or barley as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (or said Sadaqa-Ramadan)." The people then substituted half Sa' of wheat for that. Ibn ʿUmar used to give dates (as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr). Once there was scarcity of dates in Medina and Ibn ʿUmar gave barley. 'And Ibn ʿUmar used to give Sadaqat-ul- Fitr for every young and old person. He even used to give on behalf of my children. Ibn ʿUmar used to give Sadaqat-ul-Fitr to those who had been officially appointed for its collection. People used to give Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (even) a day or two before the ʿId.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ obligated the charity of Fitrah or he said Ramadan upon the male and female, free or slave, one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley. The people adhered to it by giving half a Sa' of wheat instead. Ibn 'Umar used to give dates, but the people of Madinah preferred barley, so he gave barley. Ibn 'Umar used to give on behalf of the young and old, to the point that he would give on behalf of the family of Banu Nafi'. It was narrated that Abu 'Amr Al-'Adibi informed us, who was informed by Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili, who was informed by Abu Ya'la, who was informed by Abu Rabi', who mentioned it with a chain similar to this, except that he said that there was no doubt regarding the charity of Fitrah and he said "from dates" generically. And he added that Abdullah would give it when the ones who would receive it would sit, and they used to sit before the day of Fitrah for a day or two.

The people used to fast on 'Ashura (the tenth day of the month of Muharram) before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory. And on that day the Kaʿba used to be covered with a cover. When Allah made the fasting of the month of Ramadan compulsory, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wishes to fast (on the day of 'Ashura') may do so; and whoever wishes to leave it can do so."

The people used to fast on 'Ashura (the tenth day of the month of Muharram) before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory. And on that day the Kaʿba used to be covered with a cover. When Allah made the fasting of the month of Ramadan compulsory, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wishes to fast (on the day of 'Ashura') may do so; and whoever wishes to leave it can do so." Aisha said, "the Prophet ﷺ used to practice Iʿtikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan and I used to pitch a tent for him, and after offering the morning prayer, he used to enter the tent." Hafsa asked the permission of ʿAisha to pitch a tent for her and she allowed her and she pitched her tent. When Zainab bint Jahsh saw it, she pitched another tent. In the morning the Prophet ﷺ noticed the tents. He said, 'What is this?" He was told of the whole situation. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you think that they intended to do righteousness by doing this?" He therefore abandoned the Iʿtikaf in that month and practiced Iʿtikaf for ten days in the month of Shawwal."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to practice Iʿtikaf every year in the month of Ramadan. And after offering the morning prayer, he used to enter the place of his Iʿtikaf. ʿAisha asked his permission to let her practice Iʿtikaf and he allowed her, and so she pitched a tent in the mosque. When Hafsa heard of that, she also pitched a tent (for herself), and when Zainab heard of that, she too pitched another tent. When, in the morning, Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished the morning prayer, he saw four tents and asked, "What is this?" He was informed about it. He then said, "What made them do this? Is it righteousness? Remove the tents, for I do not want to see them." So, the tents were removed. The Prophet ﷺ did not perform Iʿtikaf that year in the month of Ramadan, but did it in the last ten days of Shawwal.
