The Prophet ﷺ said, "A man used to do sinful deeds, and when death came to him, he said to his sons, 'After my death, burn me and then crush me, and scatter the powder in the air, for by Allah, if Allah has control over me, He will give me such a punishment as He has never given to anyone else.' When he died, his sons did accordingly. Allah ordered the earth saying, 'Collect what you hold of his particles.' It did so, and behold! There he was (the man) standing. Allah asked (him), 'What made you do what you did?' He replied, 'O my Lord! I was afraid of You.' So Allah forgave him. " Another narrator said "The man said, Fear of You, O Lord!"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ كَانَ رَجُلٌ يُسْرِفُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ لِبَنِيهِ إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اطْحَنُونِي ثُمَّ ذَرُّونِي فِي الرِّيحِ فَوَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ قَدَرَ عَلَىَّ رَبِّي لَيُعَذِّبَنِّي عَذَابًا مَا عَذَّبَهُ أَحَدًا فَلَمَّا مَاتَ فُعِلَ بِهِ ذَلِكَ فَأَمَرَ اللَّهُ الأَرْضَ فَقَالَ اجْمَعِي مَا فِيكِ مِنْهُ فَفَعَلَتْ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَائِمٌ فَقَالَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ قَالَ يَا رَبِّ خَشْيَتُكَ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ مَخَافَتُكَ يَا رَبِّ

The Prophet ﷺ said, "There was a man amongst the people who had suspicion as to the righteousness of his deeds. Therefore he said to his family, 'If I die, take me and burn my corpse and throw my ashes into the sea on a hot (or windy) day.' They did so, but Allah, collected his particles and asked (him), What made you do what you did?' He replied, 'The only thing that made me do it, was that I was afraid of You.' So Allah forgave him."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ كَانَ رَجُلٌ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ يُسِيءُ الظَّنَّ بِعَمَلِهِ فَقَالَ لأَهْلِهِ إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَخُذُونِي فَذَرُّونِي فِي الْبَحْرِ فِي يَوْمٍ صَائِفٍ فَفَعَلُوا بِهِ فَجَمَعَهُ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى الَّذِي صَنَعْتَ قَالَ مَا حَمَلَنِي إِلاَّ مَخَافَتُكَ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ

"I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'There was a man who wronged himself greatly, and when he was dying he said to his family: When I am dead, burn my body then grind my bones and scatter me in the wind and at sea, for by Allah , if Allah gets hold of me, he will punish me in a way that He will not punish anyone else. So his family did that, but Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said to everything that had taken any part of him to give up what it had taken. Then there he was, standing Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said: What made you do what you did? He said: Fear of You. So Allah forgave him."'

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ أَسْرَفَ عَبْدٌ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ حَتَّى حَضَرَتْهُ الْوَفَاةُ قَالَ لأَهْلِهِ إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونِي ثُمَّ اذْرُونِي فِي الرِّيحِ فِي الْبَحْرِ فَوَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ قَدَرَ اللَّهُ عَلَىَّ لَيُعَذِّبَنِّي عَذَابًا لاَ يُعَذِّبُهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِهِ قَالَ فَفَعَلَ أَهْلُهُ ذَلِكَ قَالَ اللَّهُ ﷻ لِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ أَخَذَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا أَدِّ مَا أَخَذْتَ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَائِمٌ قَالَ اللَّهُ ﷻ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ قَالَ خَشْيَتُكَ فَغَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ

“A man went to extremes in committing sins. When death came to him, he left instructions to his sons, saying: ‘When I die, burn me, then grind me into powder, then scatter me in the wind and in the sea, for by Allah, if my Lord has power over me, He will subject me to a punishment that He has never subjected anyone to.’ So they did that to him, then (Allah) said to the earth: ‘Return what you have taken,’ and there he was, standing. He said to him: ‘What made you do what you have done?’ He said: ‘Fear of You, O Lord.’ So He forgave him because of that (fear).”

الزُّهْرِيُّ أَلاَ أُحَدِّثُكَ بِحَدِيثَيْنِ عَجِيبَيْنِ أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَسْرَفَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ أَوْصَى بَنِيهِ فَقَالَ إِذَا أَنَا مِتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونِي ثُمَّ ذَرُّونِي فِي الرِّيحِ فِي الْبَحْرِ فَوَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ قَدَرَ عَلَىَّ رَبِّي لَيُعَذِّبُنِي عَذَابًا مَا عَذَّبَهُ أَحَدًا قَالَ فَفَعَلُوا بِهِ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لِلأَرْضِ أَدِّي مَا أَخَذْتِ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَائِمٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ قَالَ خَشْيَتُكَ أَوْ مَخَافَتُكَ يَا رَبِّ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ لِذَلِكَ

[AI] A man who never did any good except monotheism. So, when death approached him, he said to his family, "When I die, take me and burn me until you turn me into ashes. Then grind me, and scatter me into the sea on a windy day." He said, "They did that to him." He said, "Then he was in Allah's grip." Allah said to him, "What compelled you to do what you did?" He said, "Out of fear of you." Allah forgave him.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا لَمْ يَعْمَلْ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ شَيْئًا قَطُّ إِلَّا التَّوْحِيدَ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتْهُ الْوَفَاةُ قَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ إِذَا أَنَا مِتُّ فَخُذُونِيوَاحْرُقُونِي حَتَّى تَدَعُونِي حُمَمَةً ثُمَّ اطْحَنُونِي ثُمَّ اذْرُونِي فِي الْبَحْرِ فِي يَوْمٍ رَاحٍ قَالَ فَفَعَلُوا بِهِ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَإِذَا هُوَ فِي قَبْضَةِ اللهِ قَالَ فَقَالَ اللهُ ﷻ لَهُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ مَخَافَتُكَ قَالَ فَغَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ

لِي الزُّهْرِيُّ أَلَا أُحَدِّثُكَ بِحَدِيثَيْنِ عَجِيبَيْنِ؟ قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أَسْرَفَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ أَوْصَى بَنِيهِ فَقَالَ إِذَا أَنَا مِتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونِي ثُمَّ اذْرُونِي فِي الرِّيحِ فِي الْبَحْرِ فَوَاللهِ لَئِنْ قَدَرَ عَلَيَّ رَبِّي لَيُعَذِّبَنِّي عَذَابًا مَا عُذِّبَهُ أَحَدٌ قَالَ فَفَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ بِهِ فَقَالَ اللهُ لِلْأَرْضِ أَدِّي مَا أَخَذْتِ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَائِمٌ فَقَالَلَهُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ خَشْيَتُكَ يَا رَبِّ أَوْ مَخَافَتُكَ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ بِذَلِكَ

[AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ, and others including Al-Hasan and Ibn Sireen, that the Prophet ﷺ said, "There was a man among those who came before you who had never done any good deeds except for believing in the Oneness of Allah. When he was about to die, he said to his family, 'When I die, burn my body until it turns into ashes, then grind it into powder, and scatter it on a windy day.' After he died, they did as he had instructed. Then, Allah held his remains in His hand and said to him, 'O son of Adam, what made you do what you did?' He replied, 'O Lord, it was out of fear of You.' Allah forgave him because of that, even though he had never done any good deeds except for believing in the Oneness of Allah."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَغَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَابْنِ سِيرِينَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ كَانَ رَجُلٌ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا قَطُّ إِلَّا التَّوْحِيدَ فَلَمَّا احْتُضِرَ قَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ انْظُرُوا إِذَا أَنَا مِتُّ أَنْ يُحْرِقُوهُ حَتَّى يَدَعُوهُ حُمَمًا ثُمَّ اطْحَنُوهُ ثُمَّ اذْرُوهُ فِي يَوْمٍ راحٍ فَلَمَّا مَاتَ فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ بِهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ فِي قَبْضَةِ اللهِ فَقَالَ اللهُ ﷻ يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتَ؟ قَالَ أَيْ رَبِّ مِنْ مَخَافَتِكَ قَالَ فَغُفِرَ لَهُ بِهَا وَلَمْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا قَطُّ إِلَّا التَّوْحِيدَ

When death approached him, he said to his family, 'When I die, burn me, then crush me, and scatter half of me in the sea and half on land.' Then Allah commanded the land and the sea to collect his remains. Then He asked, 'What made you do what you did?' He replied, 'Out of fear and awe of You.' Allah forgave him because of this."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَقَدْ دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ الْجَنَّةَ مَا عَمِلَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ قَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ حِينَ حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ إِذَا أَنَا مِتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونِي ثُمَّ اذْرُوا نِصْفِي فِي الْبَحْرِ وَنِصْفِي فِي الْبَرِّ فَأَمَرَ اللهُ الْبَرَّ وَالْبَحْرَ فَجَمَعَاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ مَخَافَتُكَ قَالَ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ بِذَلِكَ

Then Allah gathered him in His hand and asked him: "What made you do what you did?" He replied: "Out of fear of You." Allah said: "Indeed, I have forgiven you."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ رَجُلٌ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ يَعْمَلُ بِالْمَعَاصِي فَلَمَّا حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اطْحَنُونِي ثُمَّ ذَرُّونِي فِي الْبَحْرِ فِي يَوْمِ رِيحٍ عَاصِفٍ قَالَ فَلَمَّا مَاتَ فَعَلُوا قَالَ فَجَمَعَهُ اللهُ فِي يَدِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ خَوْفُكَ قَالَ فَإِنِّي قَدْ غَفَرْتُ لَكَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Among those who came before you, there was a man to whom Allah bestowed wealth and children. When death approached him, he gathered his children and asked them, 'What kind of father was I to you?' They replied, 'You were the best of fathers.' He said, 'By Allah, I have never cherished anything more in the sight of Allah than you. And indeed, your Lord will punish me for it. Now, when I die, burn my body, then crush it, and scatter the ashes into an extremely windy day.' Allah commanded the wind, and when the Day of Resurrection comes and the man is standing, he will be asked, 'What made you do what you did?' He will reply, 'Out of fear of You, O Allah.' And Allah will say, 'By My might and majesty, I have forgiven him.'"

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «كَانَ فِيمَنْ سَلَفَ مِنَ النَّاسِ رَجُلٌ رَغَسَهُ اللَّهُ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا فَلَمَّا حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ جَمَعَ بَنِيهِ فقَالَ أَيَّ أَبٍ كُنْتُ لَكُمْ؟ قَالُوا خَيْرَ أَبٍ فقَالَ إِنَّهُ وَاللَّهِ مَا ابْتَأَرَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ خَيْرًا قَطُّ وَإِنَّ رَبَّهُ يُعَذِّبُهُ فَإِذَا أَنَا مِتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونِي ثُمَّ اذْرُونِي فِي رِيحٍ عَاصِفٍ قَالَ اللَّهُ كُنْ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ قَائِمٌ قَالَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ مَخَافَتُكَ قَالَ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ إِنْ يَلْقَاهُ غَيْرَ أَنْ غُفِرَ لَهُ»

قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يقول أسرف رجل على نفسه حتى إذا حضرته الوفاة قال لأهله إذا أنا مت فأحرقوني ثُمَّ اسحقوني ثُمَّ اذروني في الريح فوالله لئن قدر الله علي ليعذبني عذابًا لا يعذبه أحدًا من خلقه قال ففعل به أهله ذلك فقال الله تبارك وتعالى لكل شيء أخذ منه شيئا أد ما أخذت فإذا هو قائم فقال الله تبارك وتعالى ما حملك على ما صنعت قال خشيتك فغفر الله له

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: Verily, there was a man among those before you whom Allah blessed with wealth and children. He said to his family, "When I die, burn me until I become charcoal, then crush me and scatter me." For indeed, if my Lord is able to do so, He will punish me with a punishment that He has not inflicted upon anyone from the worlds." So they did that, and Allah commanded him to be gathered. So there he was, standing before Allah, and He said, "What caused you to do what you did?" He said, "Out of fear of You, O Lord." So Allah forgave him.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ رَغَسَهُ اللهُ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا فَقَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي حَتَّى إِذَا صِرْتُ فَحْمًا فَاسْحَقُونِي ثُمَّ اذْرُونِي فَإِنَّ رَبِّي إِنْ يَقْدِرْ عَلَيَّ يُعَذِّبْنِي عَذَابًا لَا يُعَذِّبُهُ أَحَدًا مِنَ الْعَالَمِينَ فَفَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ فَأَمَرَ اللهُ ﷻ بِهِ فَجُمِعَ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَائِمٌ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ اللهِ ﷻ فَقَالَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ خَشْيَتُكَ أَيْ رَبِّ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ

[AI] A man who had wealth but never did any good with it, when death came to him, he said to his family, "When I die, burn me, then crush my ashes, and scatter me in the wind." This was done to him, and Allah gathered him and said, "What led you to do what you did?" He said, "Out of fear of You." And so, he attained the mercy of Allah.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ لَهُ مَالٌ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ فِيهِ خَيْرًا قَطُّ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ بِهِ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَاحْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونِي ثُمَّ اذْرُونِي فِي الرِّيحِ فَفُعِلَ ذَلِكَ بِهِ فَجَمَعَهُ اللهُ فَقَالَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ مِنْ أَجْلِ مَخَافَتِكَ فَنَالَتْهُ رَحْمَةُ اللهِ

"There was a man among those who came before you who thought badly of his deeds, so when death was approaching he said to his family: 'When I am dead, burn my body and grind up my bones, then scatter me in the sea, for if Allah gets hold of me, He will never forgive me.' But Allah commanded the angles to seize his soul. He said to him: 'What made you do what you did?' He said:: 'O Lord, I only did it because I feared You.' So Allah forgave him." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2080)

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «كَانَ رَجُلٌ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ سَيِّءُ الظَّنَّ بِعَمَلِهِ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتْهُ الْوَفَاةُ» قَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي ثُمَّ اطْحَنُونِي ثُمَّ اذْرُونِي فِي الْبَحْرِ فَإِنَّ اللهَ يَقْدِرُ عَلَيَّ لَمْ يَغْفِرْ لِي قَالَ فَأَمَرَ اللهُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ فَتَلَقَّتْ رُوحَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتَ؟ قَالَ يَا رَبِّ مَا فَعَلْتُ إِلَّا مِنْ مَخَافَتِكَ فَغَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ

"أَسْرَفَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى نفسِه؛ فَلَمَّا حَضَرهُ الموتُ أوْصى بنيه فقال: إِذَا أَنَا متُّ فأحْرقُونى، ثم اسْحقونى، ثم اذْرُونى في البحر، فوَاللهِ لئن قدِر عليَّ ربِّى ليُعَذبَنِى عذَابًا ما عذَّبهُ أحدًا، فَفَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ به، فقال اللهُ للأرْضِ: أَدِّى مَا أَخذتِ، فإِذا هُوَ قائِمُ، فَقَال: ما حَمَلَكَ علَى ما صَنَعْتَ؟ قال: خَشْيَتُكَ ياربِّ؛ فَغُفِرَ لَهُ بذِلِكَ ".

"I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'There was a man who wronged himself greatly, and when he was dying he said to his family: When I am dead, burn my body then grind my bones and scatter me in the wind and at sea, for by Allah , if Allah gets hold of me, he will punish me in a way that He will not punish anyone else. So his family did that, but Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said to everything that had taken any part of him to give up what it had taken. Then there he was, standing Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said: What made you do what you did? He said: Fear of You. So Allah forgave him."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2079)

"أَسْرَفَ عَبْدٌ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا حَضَرَتْهُ الوفاةُ قال لأهله: إذا مُتُّ فاحْرِقُونى ثُمَّ اسْحقونى، ثُمَّ ذرُّونِى في الريح في البحرِ، فواللهِ لئِنْ قَدَرَ عَلَيَّ ربى لَيُعَذبنى عَذَابًا لا يُعَذِّبهُ أحدًا من خَلقِهِ بَعْدُ، فَفعَل أهلُه ذلِكَ، فقال اللهَ لِكُلِّ شيءٍ أَخَذَ منه شيئًا، أدِّ ما أخَذْتَ منه، فإِذا هو قائِمٌ، فقال اللهُ: ما حَمَلَك على ما صنعتَ؟ قال: خشْيَتُكَ فَغُفِرَ لَهُ".

"إِنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ رَغَسَهَ اللَّهُ مالًا، فَقَالَ لِبَنِيهِ لَمَّا حُضِرَ، أى أبٍ كُنْتُ لكم؟ قالوا: خَيْرَ أبٍ، قال: إِنِّى لَمْ أَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا قَط، فإِذَا مِتُ فَأَحْرقُونِى ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونى ثُمَّ ذَرُّونى في يومٍ عاصفِ فَفَعَلُوا، فَجَمَعهُ اللَّهُ فقال: مَا حَمَلَكَ على ما فعلت؟ قال: مَخَافَتُكَ، فَتَلَقَّاهُ رحْمَتُه".

"عَنْ (*) فِيمن سَلَفَ مِنَ النَّاسِ رَجُلٌ رَغَسَهُ الله -تَعَالَى- مَالًا وَوَلَدًا، فَلَمَّا حَضَرهُ الْموتُ جَمَع بَنِيهِ فَقَالَ: أَىُّ أَبٍ كُنْتُ لَكُم؟ قَالُوا خَيْر أَبٍ، فَقَالَ إِنَّه وَالله ما ابتأر عِنْدَ الله خَيْرًا قَطُّ، وإنَّ رَبَّه يُعَذِّبُهُ فَإِذَا أَنَا مِتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِى ثم اسْحَقُونِى، ثُمَ ذرونِى في رِيحٍ عَاصِف، قَالَ الله: كَنْ فَإِذَا هو رَجُل قَائِمٌ، قَالَ: مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْت؟ قَالَ: مَخَافَتكَ فَوَالَّذِى نَفْسِى بِيَده إن تلقاه غير أن غَفَر لَهُ".
