(daughter of Abu Sufyan) I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Marry my sister. the daughter of Abu Sufyan." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you like that?" I replied, "Yes, for even now I am not your only wife and I like that my sister should share the good with me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "But that is not lawful for me." I said, We have heard that you want to marry the daughter of Abu Salama." He said, "(You mean) the daughter of Um Salama?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Even if she were not my step-daughter, she would be unlawful for me to marry as she is my foster niece. I and Abu Salama were suckled by Thuwaiba. So you should not present to me your daughters or your sisters (in marriage)." Narrated 'Urwa: Thuwaiba was the freed slave girl of Abu Lahb whom he had manumitted, and then she suckled the Prophet. When Abu Lahb died, one of his relatives saw him in a dream in a very bad state and asked him, "What have you encountered?" Abu Lahb said, "I have not found any rest since I left you, except that I have been given water to drink in this (the space between his thumb and other fingers) and that is because of my manumitting Thuwaiba."

أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ أَخْبَرَتْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ انْكِحْ أُخْتِي بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَقَالَ أَوَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَارَكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لاَ يَحِلُّ لِي قُلْتُ فَإِنَّا نُحَدَّثُ أَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْكِحَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حَجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا لاَبْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ قَالَ عُرْوَةُ وَثُوَيْبَةُ مَوْلاَةٌ لأَبِي لَهَبٍ كَانَ أَبُو لَهَبٍ أَعْتَقَهَا فَأَرْضَعَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَلَمَّا مَاتَ أَبُو لَهَبٍ أُرِيَهُ بَعْضُ أَهْلِهِ بِشَرِّ حِيبَةٍ قَالَ لَهُ مَاذَا لَقِيتَ قَالَ أَبُو لَهَبٍ لَمْ أَلْقَ بَعْدَكُمْ غَيْرَ أَنِّي سُقِيتُ فِي هَذِهِ بِعَتَاقَتِي ثُوَيْبَةَ

I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Do you like to have (my sister) the daughter of Abu Sufyan?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "What shall I do (with her)?" I said, "Marry her." He said, "Do you like that?" I said, "(Yes), for even now I am not your only wife, so I like that my sister should share you with me." He said, "She is not lawful for me (to marry)." I said, "We have heard that you want to marry." He said, "The daughter of Um Salama?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Even if she were not my stepdaughter, she should be unlawful for me to marry, for Thuwaiba suckled me and her father (Abu Salama). So you should neither present your daughters, nor your sisters, to me."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَ فَأَفْعَلُ مَاذَا قُلْتُ تَنْكِحُ قَالَ أَتُحِبِّينَ قُلْتُ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِيكَ أُخْتِي قَالَ إِنَّهَا لاَ تَحِلُّ لِي قُلْتُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ قَالَ ابْنَةَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ وَقَالَ اللَّيْثُ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ دُرَّةُ بِنْتُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ

I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan." He said, "Do you like that?" I said, "Yes, for even now I am not your only wife; and the most beloved person to share the good with me is my sister." The Prophet ﷺ said, "But that is not lawful for me (i.e., to be married to two sisters at a time.)" I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Allah, we have heard that you want to marry Durra, the daughter of Abu Salama." He said, "You mean the daughter of Um Salama?" I said, "Yes." He said, "By Allah ! Even if she were not my stepdaughter, she would not be lawful for me to marry, for she is my foster niece, for Thuwaiba has suckled me and Abu Salama; so you should neither present your daughters, nor your sisters to me."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ انْكِحْ أُخْتِي بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَ وَتُحِبِّينَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَارَكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لاَ يَحِلُّ لِي قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَوَاللَّهِ إِنَّا لَنَتَحَدَّثُ أَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْكِحَ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَوَاللَّهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ فِي حَجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا لاَبْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

(the wife of the Prophet) I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Will you marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you like that?" I said, "Yes, for I am not your only wife, and the person I like most to share the good with me, is my sister." He said, "That is not lawful for me." I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We have heard that you want to marry Durra, the daughter of Abu Salama." He said, "You mean the daughter of Um Salama?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Even if she were not my stepdaughter, she is unlawful for me, for she is my foster niece. Thuwaiba suckled me and Abu Salama. So you should not present to me your daughters and sisters." Narrated 'Urwa: Thuwaiba had been a slave girl whom Abu Lahab had emancipated.

أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ انْكِحْ أُخْتِي ابْنَةَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَ وَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَارَكَنِي فِي الْخَيْرِ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لاَ يَحِلُّ لِي فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَوَاللَّهِ إِنَّا نَتَحَدَّثُ أَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْكِحَ دُرَّةَ ابْنَةَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ ابْنَةَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَوَاللَّهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حَجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ وَقَالَ شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ عُرْوَةُ ثُوَيْبَةُ أَعْتَقَهَا أَبُو لَهَبٍ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me and I said to him: Have you any inclination towards my the daughter of Abu Sufyan? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Then what should I do? I said: Marry her. He said: Do you like that? I said: I am not the exclusive (wife) of yours; I, therefore, wish to join my sister in good. He, said: She is not lawful for me. I said: I have been informed that you have given the proposal of marriage to Durrah daughter of Abu Salama He raid: You mean the daughter of Umm Salama? I said: Yes. He said: Even if she had not been my step-daughter brought up under my guardianship, she would not have been lawful for me, for she is the daughter of my foster-brother (Hamza), for Thuwaiba had suckled me and her father. So do not give me the proposal of the marriage of your daughters and sisters.

دَخَلَ عَلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَقَالَ أَفْعَلُ مَاذَا قُلْتُ تَنْكِحُهَا قَالَ أَوَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ قُلْتُ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي الْخَيْرِ أُخْتِي قَالَ فَإِنَّهَا لاَ تَحِلُّ لِي قُلْتُ فَإِنِّي أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حَجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

"O Messenger of Allah, marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan." She said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Would you like that?' I said: 'Yes; I do not have you all to myself and I would like to share this goodness with my sister.' The Prophet said: 'Your sister is not permissible for me (to marry).' I said: 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, we have been saying that you want to marry Durrah bint Abi Salamah.' He said: 'The daughter of Umm Salamah?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'By Allah, even if she were not my stepdaughter who is in my care, she would not be permissible for me (to marry), because she is the daughter of my brother through breast-feeding. Thuwaibah breastfed Abu Salamah and I. So do not offer your daughters or sisters to me in marriage.'"

أَنَّ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ وَأُمُّهَا أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ أَخْبَرَتْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنْكِحْ أُخْتِي بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَتْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَوَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكِ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ يُشَارِكُنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنَّ أُخْتَكِ لاَ تَحِلُّ لِي فَقُلْتُ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا لَنَتَحَدَّثُ أَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْكِحَ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ بِنْتُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَوْلاَ أَنَّهَا رَبِيبَتِي فِي حَجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا لاَبْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

"O Messenger of Allah, marry the daughter of my father" - meaning her sister. The Messenger of Allah said: "Would you like that?" She said: "Yes; I do not have you all to myself, and I would like to share this goodness with my sister." The Prophet said: "That is not permissible for me." Umm Habibah said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, we have been saying that you want to marry Durrah bint Abi Salamah." He said: "The daughter of Umm Salamah?" I said: "Yes." He said: "By Allah, even if she were not my stepdaughter who is in my care, she would not be permissible for me (to marry), because she is the daughter of my brother through breast-feeding. Thuwaibah breastfed Abu Salamah and I. So do not offer your daughters or sisters to me in marriage."

أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنْكِحْ بِنْتَ أَبِي تَعْنِي أُخْتَهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكِ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَرِكَتْنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لاَ يَحِلُّ قَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ تَحَدَّثْنَا أَنَّكَ تَنْكِحُ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ بِنْتُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ نَعَمْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَوَاللَّهِ لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حَجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ إِنَّهَا لاَبْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

"O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of my sister?" He said: "What for?" She said: "For marriage." He said: "Would you like that?" She said: "Yes; I do not have you all to myself, and I would like to share this goodness with my sister." He said: "She is not permissible for me (to marry)." She said: "But I heard that you want to marry Durrah, the daughter of Umm Salamah." He said: "The daughter of Umm Salamah?" She said: "Yes." He said: "By Allah, even if she were not my stepdaughter she would not be permissible for me (to marry), because she is the daughter of my brother through breast-feeding. Do not offer your daughters and sisters to me in marriage."

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي قَالَ فَأَصْنَعُ مَاذَا قَالَتْ تَزَوَّجُهَا قَالَ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكِ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ يَشْرَكُنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ إِنَّهَا لاَ تَحِلُّ لِي قَالَتْ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ بِنْتُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا لاَبْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

Umm Salamah reported Umm Habibah said “Are you interested in my sister, Apostle of Allaah ﷺ?” He said “What should I do?” She said “You marry her” He said “Your sister?” She said “Yes”. He said “Do you like that?” she said “I am not alone with you of those who share me in this good, my sister is most to my liking. He said “She is not lawful for me.” She said “By Allaah, I was told that you were going to betroth with you Darrah to Durrah , the narrator Zuhair doubted the daughter of Abu Salamah. He said “The daughter of Umm Salamah? She said “Yes”. He said “(She is my step daughter). Even if she had not been my step daughter under my protection, she would not have been lawful for me. She is my foster niece (daughter of my brother by fosterage). Thuwaibah suckled me as well as his father (Abu Salamah). So do not present to me your daughters and your sisters.

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي قَالَ فَأَفْعَلُ مَاذَا قَالَتْ فَتَنْكِحُهَا قَالَ أُخْتَكِ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَوَتُحِبِّينَ ذَاكَ قَالَتْ لَسْتُ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ بِكَ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَرَكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ فَإِنَّهَا لاَ تَحِلُّ لِي قَالَتْ فَوَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ أَوْ ذَرَّةَ شَكَّ زُهَيْرٌ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَمَا وَاللَّهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

“Marry my sister 'Azzah.” The Messenger of Allah said: 'Would you like that? “She said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah. I am not the only one living with you and the one who most deserves to share good thingswith me is my sister.” The Messenger of Allah said: “But that is not permissible for me.” She said: “But we throught that you wanted to marry Durrah bint Abi Salmah.” The Messenger of Allah said: The daughter of Umm Salamah?” She said: “Yes” The Messenger of Allah said: “Even if she were not my step-daughter who is under my care, she would not be permissible for me, because she is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding. Tuwaibah breastfed both her father and I. So do not offer your sisters and daughters to me for marriage.”

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ انْكِحْ أُخْتِي عَزَّةَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَلَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَقُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ لاَ يَحِلُّ لِي قَالَتْ فَإِنَّا نَتَحَدَّثُ أَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْكِحَ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَإِنَّهَا لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَىَّ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ بَنَاتِكُنَّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ نَحْوَهُ

[Machine] Umm Habiba, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, do you have any interest in my sister?" He asked, "What will I do with her?" She said, "Marry her." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "And do you approve of that?" She said, "Yes, I am not forbidden to you, and who is more deserving to share in the goodness of my sister than you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "She is not permissible for me." She said, "By Allah, I have heard that you are proposing to marry Durrah, the daughter of Umm Salamah's son (from a previous marriage). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If she were permissible for me, I would not have married her. She has breastfed me and her father, Thuwaybah, was the wet nurse of the Banu Hashim. So, do not propose any of your sisters or daughters to me."

جَاءَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي؟ قَالَ فَأَصْنَعُ بِهَا مَاذَا؟ قَالَتْ تَزَوَّجُهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟ فَقَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَقُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِي قَالَتْ فَوَاللهِ لَقَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ ابْنَةَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كَانَتْ تَحِلُّ لِي لَمَا تَزَوَّجْتُهَا قَدْ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ مَوْلَاةُ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا بَنَاتِكُنَّ

Umm Salamah reported Umm Habibah said “Are you interested in my sister, Apostle of Allaah ﷺ?” He said “What should I do?” She said “You marry her” He said “Your sister?” She said “Yes”. He said “Do you like that?” she said “I am not alone with you of those who share me in this good, my sister is most to my liking. He said “She is not lawful for me.” She said “By Allaah, I was told that you were going to betroth with you Darrah to Durrah , the narrator Zuhair doubted the daughter of Abu Salamah. He said “The daughter of Umm Salamah? She said “Yes”. He said “(She is my step daughter). Even if she had not been my step daughter under my protection, she would not have been lawful for me. She is my foster niece (daughter of my brother by fosterage). Thuwaibah suckled me as well as his father (Abu Salamah). So do not present to me your daughters and your sisters. يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي ابْنَةِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ؟ قَالَ فَأَفْعَلُ مَاذَا؟ قَالَتْ تَنْكِحُهَا قَالَ وَذَاكَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي الْخَيْرِ أُخْتِي قَالَ إِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِي قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ ابْنَةَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ ابْنَةُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَوَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي لَمَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

“Marry my sister 'Azzah.” The Messenger of Allah said: 'Would you like that? “She said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah. I am not the only one living with you and the one who most deserves to share good thingswith me is my sister.” The Messenger of Allah said: “But that is not permissible for me.” She said: “But we throught that you wanted to marry Durrah bint Abi Salmah.” The Messenger of Allah said: The daughter of Umm Salamah?” She said: “Yes” The Messenger of Allah said: “Even if she were not my step-daughter who is under my care, she would not be permissible for me, because she is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding. Tuwaibah breastfed both her father and I. So do not offer your sisters and daughters to me for marriage.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1939)

“Marry my sister 'Azzah.” The Messenger of Allah said: 'Would you like that? “She said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah. يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ انْكِحْ بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ لِأُخْتِهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «وَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ يُشَارِكُنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَا يَحِلُّ» قَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ حُدِّثْنَا أَنَّكَ تُنْكِحُ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ «ابْنَةُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ?» فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ نَعَمْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةَ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ»

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ married the daughter of Abu Sufyan for his sister and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you like that?" She said, "Yes, I am not denying you, and I love those who share with me in goodness, my sister." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "So this is not permissible." Umm Habibah said, "O Messenger of Allah, it has been said that you have married Durrat bint Abu Salamah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The daughter of Umm Salamah?" Umm Habibah said, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If she had not been my foster niece, she would not have been permissible for me to marry because she is the daughter of my brother from breastfeeding. I and Abu Salamah both breastfed Thawbah, so do not present your daughters or sisters to me."

لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ انْكِحْ بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ لِأُخْتِهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَوَ تُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَارَكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَا يَحِلُّ» قَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَقَدْ تُحَدِّثَ أَنَّكَ نَاكِحٌ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟» قَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ نَعَمْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِأَنَّهَا بِنْتُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي أَنَا وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُ»

[Machine] Um Habiba, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, informed him that she had said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan." She claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Do you desire that?" She replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah. I am not opposed to it, and I love for the one who shares goodness with me to also share my sister." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is not permissible for me." I (the narrator) said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have been speaking that you want to marry Durrah, the daughter of Abu Salama." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The daughter of Abu Salama?" She said, "Yes." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Allah, if it were not for the fact that she is my milk sister, as she breastfed me alongside Abu Salama's daughter Thuwaybah, she would have become permissible for me. Therefore, do not present your daughters or sisters to me."

أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَخْبَرَتْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ انْكِحْ أُخْتِي بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَزَعَمَتْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهَا «أَوَ تُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَا يَحِلُّ لِي» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا لَنَتَحَدَّثُ أَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْكِحَ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَأَيْمُ اللهِ لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي لَمَا حَلَّتْ لِي لِأَنَّهَا بِنْتُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ»

[Machine] Um Habiba, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "Do you like that?" She replied, "I have no objection, and no one is better than you to marry my sister." He said, "It is not permissible for me." She said, "By Allah, we have heard that you intend to marry Durrat, the daughter of Um Salama." He asked, "The daughter of Um Salama?" She replied, "Yes." He said, "By Allah, if she was not my foster sister, it would have been permissible for me. She is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding, and she breastfed me and Thawiba. So, do not offer your daughters or sisters to me."

أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ انْكِحْ أُخْتِي بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَوَ تُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟» قَالَتْ مَا أَنَا بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَخَيْرُ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ «إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَا يَحِلُّ لِي» قَالَتْ فَوَاللهِ إِنَّا لَنُحَدَّثُ أَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْكِحَ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ «بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَوَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا لَابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ لَقَدْ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَإِيَّاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ»

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , entered upon me, so I said, "Do you have any interest in my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan?" The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "What would you do?" I said, "I want to marry her." He asked, "Your sister?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Do you really want that?" I said, "Yes, I am not compelled, and I love whoever you choose for me, even if it is my sister." He said, "She is not permissible for me." I said, "By Allah, I have been informed that you are proposing to marry the daughter of Abu Salama." He asked, "The daughter of Abu Salama?" I said, "Yes." He said, "By Allah, if she was not my stepdaughter, she would not have been lawful for me. She is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding, and Thawiba breastfed both me and her. Therefore, do not present your daughters and sisters to me."

دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَأَفْعَلُ مَاذَا؟» قُلْتُ فَتَنْكِحُهَا قَالَ «أُخْتَكِ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «أَوَ تُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ «إِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِي» قُلْتُ وَاللهِ لَقَدْ أُنْبِئْتُ أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ «بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «وَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا بِنْتُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَإِيَّاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَأَخَوَاتِكُنَّ»

[Machine] The messenger of Allah, ﷺ , entered upon me, so I said, "Do you have any interest in my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan?" He said, "What will you do?" I said, "Marry her." He said, "Your sister?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Do you wish for that?" I said, "Yes, I am not opposed to it, and I love her." He said, "Does she feel the same?" I said, "By Allah, I have been informed that you are proposing to marry Durrah, the daughter of Abu Salama." He said, "The daughter of Abu Salama?" I said, "Yes." He said, "By Allah, if she was not my stepdaughter, she would not be lawful for me. She is my brother's daughter through breastfeeding. Thuwaybah breastfed both her and me. So, do not propose your daughters or sisters to me."

دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ؟ قَالَ «أَفْعَلُ مَاذَا؟» قُلْتُ تَنْكِحُهَا قَالَ «أُخْتَكِ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «أَوَ تُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ أَوْ قَالَتْ وَأَحَقُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ «فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِي» قَالَتْ فَوَاللهِ لَقَدْ أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ «بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَوَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَإِيَّاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ»

[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, do you have any interest in my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan?" He said, "No, she is not permissible for me." She said, "I have heard that you are proposing to Durrah, the daughter of Abu Salama." He said, "She is the daughter of my foster mother, and even if she was not my foster sister, she would not have been permissible for me. She breastfed me and Thawiba as well. So, do not present to me your sisters or daughters."

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ؟ قَالَ «لَا إِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِي» قَالَتْ إِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ «بِنْتُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ وَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا بِنْتُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَإِيَّاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا بَنَاتِكُنَّ»

"O Messenger of Allah, marry the daughter of my father" - meaning her sister. The Messenger of Allah said: "Would you like that?" She said: "Yes; I do not have you all to myself, and I would like to share this goodness with my sister." The Prophet said: "That is not permissible for me." Umm Habibah said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, we have been saying that you want to marry Durrah bint Abi Salamah." He said: "The daughter of Umm Salamah?" I said: "Yes." He said: "By Allah, even if she were not my stepdaughter who is in my care, she would not be permissible for me (to marry), because she is the daughter of my brother through breast-feeding. Thuwaibah breastfed Abu Salamah and I. So do not offer your daughters or sisters to me in marriage." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3285)

أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنْكِحْ ابْنَةَ أَبِي تَعْنِي أُخْتَهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «وَتُحِبِّينَ ذَاكَ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَارَكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَا يَحِلُّ» قَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَاللهِ لَقَدْ تَحَدَّثْنَا أَنَّكَ تَنْكِحُ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ «بِنْتُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟» قَالَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ نَعَمْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَوَاللهِ لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حَجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا لَابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ»

"O Messenger of Allah, marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan." She said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Would you like that?' I said: 'Yes; I do not have you all to myself and I would like to share this goodness with my sister.' The Prophet said: 'Your sister is not permissible for me (to marry).' I said: 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, we have been saying that you want to marry Durrah bint Abi Salamah.' He said: 'The daughter of Umm Salamah?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'By Allah, even if she were not my stepdaughter who is in my care, she would not be permissible for me (to marry), because she is the daughter of my brother through breast-feeding. أَنَّ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ وَأُمُّهَا أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ أَخْبَرَتْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنْكِحْ أُخْتِي ابْنَةَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَتْ فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَوَ تُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟» فَقَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَارَكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَا يَحِلُّ لِي» فَقُلْتُ وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا لَنَتَحَدَّثُ أَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْكِحَ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ «ابْنَةُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟» فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ «وَاللهِ لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حَجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا لَابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعْتِنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ» أَدْخَلَ هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ بَيْنَ زَيْنَبَ وَبَيْنَ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ

"O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of my sister?" He said: "What for?" She said: "For marriage." He said: "Would you like that?" She said: "Yes; I do not have you all to myself, and I would like to share this goodness with my sister." He said: "She is not permissible for me (to marry)." She said: "But I heard that you want to marry Durrah, the daughter of Umm Salamah." He said: "The daughter of Umm Salamah?" She said: "Yes." He said: "By Allah, even if she were not my stepdaughter she would not be permissible for me (to marry), because she is the daughter of my brother through breast-feeding. Do not offer your daughters and sisters to me in marriage." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3287)

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي؟ قَالَ «فَأَصْنَعُ مَاذَا؟» قَالَتْ تَزَوَّجْهَا قَالَ «فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكِ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ يَشْرَكُنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ «فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِي» قَالَتْ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تُخْطَبُ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أُبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ «ابْنَةُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ وَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي إِنَّهَا لَابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ قَالَ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

Umm Salamah reported Umm Habibah said “Are you interested in my sister, Apostle of Allaah ﷺ?” He said “What should I do?” She said “You marry her” He said “Your sister?” She said “Yes”. He said “Do you like that?” she said “I am not alone with you of those who share me in this good, my sister is most to my liking. He said “She is not lawful for me.” She said “By Allaah, I was told that you were going to betroth with you Darrah to Durrah , the narrator Zuhair doubted the daughter of Abu Salamah. He said “The daughter of Umm Salamah? She said “Yes”. He said “(She is my step daughter). Even if she had not been my step daughter under my protection, she would not have been lawful for me. She is my foster niece (daughter of my brother by fosterage). Thuwaibah suckled me as well as his father (Abu Salamah). So do not present to me your daughters and your sisters. يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَاعِلٌ مَاذَا؟ قَالَتْ تَنْكِحُهَا قَالَ أُخْتُكِ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَوَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِي قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ فَوَاللهِ لَقَدْ أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ ابْنَةَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ ابْنَةُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَوَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي؛ إِنَّهَا لَابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ هِشَامٍ وَالزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ

I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan." He said, "Do you like that?" I said, "Yes, for even now I am not your only wife; and the most beloved person to share the good with me is my sister." The Prophet ﷺ said, "But that is not lawful for me (i.e., to be married to two sisters at a time.)" I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Allah, we have heard that you want to marry Durra, the daughter of Abu Salama." He said, "You mean the daughter of Um Salama?" I said, "Yes." He said, "By Allah ! Even if she were not my stepdaughter, she would not be lawful for me to marry, for she is my foster niece, for Thuwaiba has suckled me and Abu Salama; so you should neither present your daughters, nor your sisters to me." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5107)

أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ انْكِحْ أُخْتِي بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَتْ نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَارَكَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَتْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَا يَحِلُّ لِي قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَوَاللهِ إِنَّا لَنَتَحَدَّثُ أَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْكِحَ دُرَّةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِنْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟ قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَوَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي؛ إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَا سَلَمَةَ ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

[Machine] Narrated by Umm Habiba, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), she said, "O Messenger of Allah, do you have any desire for Durrah, the daughter of Abu Sufyan?" He asked, "What would you do?" She replied, "I would marry her to you." He then asked, "Do you love that?" She responded, "I am not the one who decides, but I love whoever shares goodness with me, my sister." He said, "Then she is not permissible (for you)." Umm Habiba said, "But I have heard that you are engaged to Zainab, the daughter of Umm Salama." The Prophet asked, "The daughter of Um Salama?" She confirmed, "Yes." He said, "By Allah, if she had not been my foster daughter, she would not have been permissible for me. She breastfed me and her father, Thuwaybah. So do not present your daughters or sisters to me."

عَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي دُرَّةَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ؟ قَالَ فَأَفْعَلُ مَاذَا؟ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ تَنْكِحُهَا قَالَ أَتُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟ قُلْتُ لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ يَشْرَكُنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي قَالَ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ ابْنَةُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَوَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حِجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي لَقَدْ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ فَلَا تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ

"عَنْ عُروَةَ، عَنْ زَيْنَب بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أُمَّ حبيبةَ قَالَتْ: دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ: هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي ابْنَةِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ؟ قَالَ: أَفْعَلُ مَاذَا؟ قُلْتُ: تَنْكِحُهَا، قَالَ: أُخْتكِ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: أَو تُحِبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟ قلْتُ: نَعَمْ لَسْتُ لَكَ [بِمُخْليَةٍ] وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَركَنِي فِي خَيْرٍ أُخْتِي، قَالَ: فَإنَّهَا لا تَحِلُّ لي، قُلْتُ: وَاللهِ لَقَدْ أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ [زَيْنَب] بِنْتَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، [فَقَالَ]: بِنْتُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَوَاللهِ لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنَ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حجْرِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي، إِنَّهَا لابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ، لَقَدْ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وأَبَاهَا ثُوَيَبْةُ، فَلَا تعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ، وَلَا أَخَوَاتكنَّ، قَالَ عُرْوَةُ: وَكَانَتْ ثُوَيْبَةُ مَوْلَاةً لَأَبِي لَهَبٍ وَكان أبو لهبٍ أعتقها فَأَرْضَعَتْ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ فلَمَّا رَآهُ بَعْضُ أَهْلِهِ فِي النَّوْمِ، فَقَالَ: مَاذَا لَقِيتَ؟ قَالَ: أبُو [لَهَبٍ] لَمْ أَلْقَ بِعْدَكُمْ رَاحَةً غَيْرَ أَنِّي سُقِيتُ فِي هَذِهِ مِنِّي لِعْتِقي ثُوَيْبَةَ، وَأَشَارَ إِلَى النُّقْرَةِ التِي [تلي] الإِبْهَامَ وَالتي تَلِيهَا".

"عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ: جَاءَتْ أُمُّ حَبِيبَة إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالْت يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ: هَلْ لَكَ فِي أُخْتِي؟ قَالَ: أَصْنَعُ بِهَا مَاذَا؟ قَالَتْ: تَزَوَّجْهَا، قَالَ: وَتُحبِّينَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ وَلَسْتُ بِمُخْلِيةٍ، وَأَحَقُّ مَنْ شَرِكَنِي فِي خَيْر أُخْتِي قَالَ: إِنَّهَا لَا تَحِلُّ لِي، قَالَتْ: واللهِ لَقَدْ أُخْبِرْتُ أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ دُرَّةَ ابْنَةَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، فَقَالَ رَسُول اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي فِي حجْرِي لَمَا حَلَّتْ لِي وَقَدْ أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ مَوْلَاةُ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ فَلَا تَعْرِضَن عَلَيَّ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ وَلَا بَنَاتِكُنَّ".
