Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army detachment and made Usama bin Zaid its commander. Some people criticized (spoke badly of) Usama's leadership. So Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up saying, "If you people are criticizing Usama's leadership, you have already criticized the leadership of his father before. But Waaimullah (i.e., By Allah), he (i.e. Zaid) deserved the leadership, and he was one of the most beloved persons to me; and now this (his son Usama) is one of the dearest persons to me after him." (See Hadith No. 765, Vol. 5)  

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعْثًا وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فَطَعَنَ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ فِي إِمْرَتِهِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَطْعَنُونَ فِي إِمْرَتِهِ فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَطْعَنُونَ فِي إِمْرَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لَخَلِيقًا لِلإِمَارَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ بَعْدَهُ  

Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent troops appointed Usama bin Zaid as their commander. The people criticized his leadership. Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and said, "If you (people) are criticizing his (i.e. Usama's) leadership you used to criticize the leadership of his father before. By Allah, he (i.e. Zaid) deserved the leadership indeed, and he used to be one of the most beloved persons to me, and now this (i.e. his son, Usama) is one of the most beloved persons to me after him."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed Usama bin Zaid as the commander of some people. Those people criticized his leadership. The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you speak ill of his leadership, you have already spoken ill of his father's leadership before. By Allah, he deserved to be a Commander, and he was one of the most beloved persons to me and now this (i.e. Usama) is one of the most beloved persons to me after him.  

أَمَّرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُسَامَةَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ فَطَعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَالَ إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَدْ طَعَنْتُمْ فِي إِمَارَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ كَانَ خَلِيقًا لِلإِمَارَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ بَعْدَهُ  

The Prophet ﷺ sent an army under the command of Usama bin Zaid. When some people criticized his leadership, the Prophet ﷺ said, "If you are criticizing Usama's leadership, you used to criticize his father's leadership before. By Allah! He was worthy of leadership and was one of the dearest persons to me, and (now) this (i.e. Usama) is one of the dearest to me after him (i.e. Zaid).  

بَعَثَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَعْثًا وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فَطَعَنَ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنْ تَطْعُنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَطْعُنُونَ فِي إِمَارَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لَخَلِيقًا لِلإِمَارَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ بَعْدَهُ  

You object to his command and before this you objected to the command of his father (Zaid). By Allah, he was fit as the commander and he was one of the dearest of persons to me and after him, behold! this one (Usama) is one of the dearest of persons to me.  

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعْثًا وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فَطَعَنَ النَّاسُ فِي إِمْرَتِهِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمْرَتِهِ فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَطْعَنُونَ فِي إِمْرَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لَخَلِيقًا لِلإِمْرَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ بَعْدَهُ  

You object to the command of Usima b. Zaid as you had objected before to the command of his father (Zaid). By Allah, he was most competent for it and, by Allah, he was dearest to me amongst people and, by Allah, the same is the case with Usama b. Zaid. He is most dear to me after him and I advise you to treat him well for he is pious amongst you.  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ يُرِيدُ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فَقَدْ طَعَنْتُمْ فِي إِمَارَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لَخَلِيقًا لَهَا وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لأَحَبَّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنَّ هَذَا لَهَا لَخَلِيقٌ يُرِيدُ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لأَحَبَّهُمْ إِلَىَّ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ فَأُوصِيكُمْ بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ صَالِحِيكُمْ  

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent and army and put Usamah bin Zaid in charge of them. So the people contested his leadership, so the Prophet ﷺ said: 'If you contest his leadership, then you did contest the leadership of his father before him. And indeed, by Allah, he was certainly fit for leadership, and he was of the most beloved of people to me, and this one is among the most beloved of people to me after him.'"  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ بَعْثًا وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فَطَعَنَ النَّاسُ فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَطْعَنُونَ فِي إِمْرَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لَخَلِيقًا لِلإِمَارَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا مِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ بَعْدَهُ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ  

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he ordered Usama, informed him that people criticize Usama and undermine his leadership. He stood up as Salim narrated to me and said, "You criticize Usama and undermine his leadership, and you have done the same with his father before. Despite being suitable for leadership and being the most beloved to me, his son after him is also beloved to me. So, treat him kindly, as he is among the best of you."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ أَمَّرَ أُسَامَةَ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ النَّاسَ يَعِيبُونَ أُسَامَةَ وَيَطْعَنُونَ فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَامَ كَمَا حَدَّثَنِي سَالِمٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّكُمْ تَعِيبُونَ أُسَامَةَ وَتَطْعَنُونَ فِي إِمَارَتِهِ وَقَدْ فَعَلْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فِي أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَخَلِيقًا لِلْإِمَارَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَأَحَبَّ النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ إِلَيَّ وَإِنَّ ابْنَهُ هَذَا بَعْدَهُ مِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ فَاسْتَوْصُوا بِهِ خَيْرًا فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ خِيَارِكُمْ

[Machine] From the Messenger of Allahﷺ when he commanded Usama bin Zaid and he was informed that people were criticizing and undermining his leadership, the Messenger of Allahﷺ stood among the people and said, as Salim narrated to me: "Indeed, you criticize Usama and undermine his leadership, although you did the same with his father before, even though he was qualified for leadership and was the dearest of all people to me. And surely, his son after him is the dearest of all people to me. Therefore, treat him well, for he is among your best. Salim said, I have never heard Abdullah narrate this hadith without saying, 'God forbid that it should be Fatima.'"

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعْثًا وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فَطَعَنَ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ فِي إِمْرَتِهِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمْرَتِهِ فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَطْعَنُونَ فِي إِمْرَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَأَيْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ خَلِيقًا لِلْإِمَارَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ بَعْدَهُ»

طَعَنَ النَّاسُ فِي إِمَارَةِ ابْنِ زَيْدٍ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَةِ ابْنِ زَيْدٍ فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَطْعَنُونَ فِي إِمَارَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ وَايْمُ اللهِ إِنْ كَانَ حَقِيقًا لِلْإِمَارَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لِمَنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ إِلَيَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَأُحِبُّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ بَعْدَهُ فَاسْتَوْصُوا بِهِ خَيْرًا فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ خِيَارِكُمْ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Usama to deliver the message that people were criticizing and finding fault in his leadership. He said, "You criticize Usama and find fault in his leadership, even though you did the same to his father before. Even if he was not fit for leadership, he is the most beloved person to me. And his son after him is the most beloved person to me. Treat him well, as he is among your best." Salim said, "I have never heard Abdullah bin Umar narrate this hadith without adding, 'May Allah protect Fatima.'"

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعْثًا وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فَطَعَنَ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَطْعَنُونَ عَلَى إِمَارَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَايْمُ اللهِ لَئِنْ كَانَ خَلِيقًا لِلْإِمَارَةِ وَإِنَّ أَبَاهُ مِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ بَعْدَهُ  

The Prophet ﷺ sent an army under the command of Usama bin Zaid. When some people criticized his leadership, the Prophet ﷺ said, "If you are criticizing Usama's leadership, you used to criticize his father's leadership before. By Allah! He was worthy of leadership and was one of the dearest persons to me, and (now) this (i.e. Usama) is one of the dearest to me after him (i.e. Zaid). (Using translation from Bukhārī 3730)

"إِنْ تَطعَموا فِى إِمَارتَه فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَطعَنُونَ فِى إِمَارَةِ أَبيه منْ قَبْلِ وَأَيْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لَخَليقًا للإمارَةِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ لَمِنْ أحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاس إِلَىَّ بَعْدَهُ وَأوْصِيكُمْ بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ صَالِحِيكُمْ" .  

" عنِ ابن عمر أن رسول الله ﷺ قَالَ حِينَ أمَّرَ أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْد وَبَلَغَهُ أَنَّ النَّاسَ عَابُوا إِمَارَتَهُ فَطَعَنُوا فِيهَا، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ فِى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ: ألَا إِنَّكُمْ تَعِيبُونَ أُسَامَةَ وَتَطْعَنُونَ في إِمَارَتهِ وَقَدْ فَعَلتُمْ ذَلِكَ بأَبيهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَخَلِيقًا للإمَارة وَإنْ كَانَ لأحَبَّ النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ إِلَىَّ وَأَنَّ ابْنَهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ لَأَحَبُّ النَّاسِ إِلَى فَاسْتوْصُوا بِه خَيْرًا فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ خِيَارِكُمْ، قَالَ سَالِمٌ: مَا سمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الله بْنَ عُمَرَ يحُدِّثُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ قَطُّ إِلَّا قَالَ: وَالله مَا حَاشَا فَاطمَةَ ".
