I have heard from one upon whom Surah al-Baqara was revealed (the Holy Prophet) pronouncing Talbiya at this place.

قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَنَحْنُ بِجَمْعٍ سَمِعْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ يَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الْمَقَامِ لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ

We heard 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud saying to the gathering of people (at Muzdalifa) that he had heard Talbiya from him, upon whom Surah al-Baqara was revealed, at this very place. And so he ('Abdullah b. Mas'ud) pronounced Talbiya and we also pronounced it with him.

سَمِعْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ هَا هُنَا يَقُولُ لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ ثُمَّ لَبَّى وَلَبَّيْنَا مَعَهُ

By him, besides Whom there is no other god, that is the place (of flinging stones) of one upon whom Surah al-Baqara was revealed (the Holy Prophet).

رَمَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ مِنْ بَطْنِ الْوَادِي بِسَبْعِ حَصَيَاتٍ يُكَبِّرُ مَعَ كُلِّ حَصَاةٍ قَالَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ أُنَاسًا يَرْمُونَهَا مِنْ فَوْقِهَا فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ هَذَا وَالَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

I heard Hajjaj b. Yusuf saying as he was delivering sermon on the pulpit: Observe the order of the (Holy) Qur'an which has been observed by Gabriel. (Thus state the surahs in this manner)" one in which mention has been made of al-Baqara,"" one in which mention has been made of women (Surah al-Nisa')" and then the surah in which mention has been made of the Family of 'Imrin. He (the (narrator) said: I met Ibrahim and informed him about these words of his (the statement of Hajjaj b. Yusuf). He cursed him and said: Abd al-Rahman b. Yazid has narrated to me that when he was in the company of 'Abdullah b. Mas'udd (Allah be pleased with them) he came to Jamrat al-'Aqaba and then entered the heart of the valley and faced towards it (the Jamra) and then flung seven pebbles at it from the heart of the valley pronouncing Takbir with every pebble. I said: Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, people fling pebbles at it (Jamra) from the upper side, whereupon he said: By Him besides Whom there is no god, that is the place (of flinging pebbles of one) upon whom Surah al-Baqara was revealed;

أَلِّفُوا الْقُرْآنَ كَمَا أَلَّفَهُ جِبْرِيلُ السُّورَةُ الَّتِي يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا الْبَقَرَةُ وَالسُّورَةُ الَّتِي يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا النِّسَاءُ وَالسُّورَةُ الَّتِي يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا آلُ عِمْرَانَ قَالَ فَلَقِيتُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِقَوْلِهِ فَسَبَّهُ وَقَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فَأَتَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ فَاسْتَبْطَنَ الْوَادِيَ فَاسْتَعْرَضَهَا فَرَمَاهَا مِنْ بَطْنِ الْوَادِي بِسَبْعِ حَصَيَاتٍ يُكَبِّرُ مَعَ كُلِّ حَصَاةٍ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَرْمُونَهَا مِنْ فَوْقِهَا فَقَالَ هَذَا وَالَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

That is the place (of flinging pebbles of one) upon whom Surah al-Baqara was revealed.

أَنَّهُ حَجَّ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَرَمَى الْجَمْرَةَ بِسَبْعِ حَصَيَاتٍ وَجَعَلَ الْبَيْتَ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ وَمِنًى عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَقَالَ هَذَا مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

"When we were in Jam (Al-Muzadalifah), Ibn Masud said: 'I heard the one to whoem surat Al-Baqarah was revealed say, in this place: Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik."

قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ وَنَحْنُ بِجَمْعٍ سَمِعْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ يَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الْمَكَانِ لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ

"It was said to Abdullah bin Masud that some people were stoning the Jamart from above al-Aqabah." He said: "So Abdullah stoned it from the bottom of the valley, then he said: 'From here - by the One beside Whom there is no other God - did the one to whom surat Al-Baqarah was revealed, stone it."

إِنَّ نَاسًا يَرْمُونَ الْجَمْرَةَ مِنْ فَوْقِ الْعَقَبَةِ قَالَ فَرَمَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ مِنْ بَطْنِ الْوَادِي ثُمَّ قَالَ مِنْ هَا هُنَا وَالَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ رَمَى الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

"I sqa Ibn Masud stone Jamratul 'Aqabah from the bottom of the valley, then he said: ;This - by the One beside Whom there is no other God-is the place where the one to whom Surat Al-Baqarah was revealed stood."'

رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ رَمَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ مِنْ بَطْنِ الْوَادِي ثُمَّ قَالَ هَا هُنَا وَالَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

“When ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud stoned ‘Aqabah Pillar, he went to the bottom of the valley and turned to face the Ka’bah, with the Pillar on his right hand side. Then he threw seven pebbles, saying the Takbir with each one. Then he said: ‘From here, by the One besides Whom there is none worthy of worship, did the one throw, to whom Surat Al-Baqarah was revealed.’”

لَمَّا أَتَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ اسْتَبْطَنَ الْوَادِيَ وَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْكَعْبَةَ وَجَعَلَ الْجَمْرَةَ عَلَى حَاجِبِهِ الأَيْمَنِ ثُمَّ رَمَى بِسَبْعِ حَصَيَاتٍ يُكَبِّرُ مَعَ كُلِّ حَصَاةٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ مِنْ هَاهُنَا وَالَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ رَمَى الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

"I saw Ibn Masud stone Jamratul 'Aqabah from the bottom of the valley, then he said: This - by the One besides Whom there is no other God-is the place where the one to whom Surat Al-Baqarah was revealed stood."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3072)

قَالَ رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ رَمَى الْجَمْرَةَ جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ مِنْ بَطْنِ الْوَادِي ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

[AI] That Abdullah responded when he returned from a gathering, it was said: "This is an Arab." Abdullah said: "Do people forget or have they gone astray? I have heard the one upon whom Surat Al-Baqarah was revealed saying in this place: 'Labbaik Allahumma labbaik'."

أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ لَبَّى حِينَ أَفَاضَ مِنْ جَمْعٍ فَقِيلَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ هَذَا فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ أَنَسِيَ النَّاسُ أَمْ ضَلُّوا؟ سَمِعْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ يَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الْمَكَانِ لَبَّيْكَ اللهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ

[AI] Abdullah was throwing the Pebbles from the Mas'ila, so I said, "Are you throwing it from here?" He replied, "Yes, by the One besides whom there is no god, I am throwing it from here, the same place where the Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed to him."

كَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يَرْمِي الْجَمْرَةَ مِنَ الْمَسِيلِ فَقُلْتُ أَمِنْ هَاهُنَا تَرْمِيهَا؟ فَقَالَ مِنْ هَاهُنَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ رَمَاهَا الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

I performed Hajj with Ibn Masʿud , and saw him doing Rami of the big Jamra (Jamrat-ul-Aqaba) with seven small pebbles, keeping the Kaʿba on his left side and Mina on his right. He then said, "This is the place where the one on whom Surat-al-Baqara was revealed (i.e. Messenger of Allah ﷺ ) stood." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1749)

أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ اسْتَبْطَنَ الْوَادِيَ وَاعْتَرَضَ الْجِمَارَ اعْتِرَاضًا وَجَعَلَ الْجَبَلَ فَوْقَ ظَهْرِهِ ثُمَّ رَمَى وَقَالَ هَذَا مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

[AI] Here, I saw the one to whom Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed, performing tawaf.

أَنَّهُ لَبَّى لَيْلَةَ جَمْعٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَاهُنَا رَأَيْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ يُلَبِّي

"It was said to Abdullah bin Masud that some people were stoning the Jamart from above al-Aqabah." He said: "So Abdullah stoned it from the bottom of the valley, then he said: 'From here - by the One beside Whom there is no other God - did the one to whom surat Al-Baqarah was revealed, stone it." رَمَى عَبْدُ اللهِ الْجَمْرَةَ فِي بَطْنِ الْوَادِي قُلْتُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ لَا يَرْمُونَ مِنْ هَاهُنَا قَالَ هَذَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

[AI] Abdullah threw from the middle of the valley, so I said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, people usually throw from above it." He replied, "By the One besides whom there is no god, this is the place on which Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed."

رَمَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ مِنْ بَطْنِ الْوَادِي فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَرْمُونَهَا مِنْ فَوْقِهَا فَقَالَ «هَذَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ»

أَنَّهُ اسْتَبْطَنَ الْوَادِيَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ فَرَمَى الْجَمْرَةَ جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةَ وَقَالَ هَذَا مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

أَنَّهُ رَمَى الْجَمْرَةَ بِسَبْعِ حَصَيَاتٍ فَجَعَلَ الْبَيْتَ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ وَمِنًى عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَقَالَ هَذَا مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

He went down into the middle of the valley when he threw at Jamarat al-Aqabah, placed the mountain behind his back, then threw and said, "This is the standing place of the one upon whom Surat al-Baqarah was revealed."

أَنَّهُ اسْتَبْطَنَ الْوَادِيَ حِينَ رَمَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ، وَجَعَلَ الْجَبَلَ خَلْفَ ظَهْرِهِ، ثُمَّ رَمَى وَقَالَ: هَذَا مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ.

[AI] Abdullah stood on Safa, near a crack, and said, "Here, by the One in whose hand is my soul, the one to whom Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed, has stood."

قَامَ عَبْدُ اللهِ عَلَى الصَّفَا عِنْدَ صَدْعٍ فِيهِ فَقَالَ «هَا هُنَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ قَامَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ»

I performed Hajj with Ibn Masʿud , and saw him doing Rami of the big Jamra (Jamrat-ul-Aqaba) with seven small pebbles, keeping the Kaʿba on his left side and Mina on his right. [AI] Here, I saw the one upon whom Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed, responding.

أَنَّهُ لَبَّى لَيْلَةَ جَمْعٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَاهُنَا رَأَيْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ يُلَبِّي

[AI] I heard the one on whom Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed reciting.

سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ يُلَبِّي لَيْلَةَ الْمُزْدَلِفَةِ فَقَالَ هَاهُنَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ «سَمِعْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ يُلَبِّي»

I have heard from one upon whom Surah al-Baqara was revealed (the Holy Prophet) pronouncing Talbiya at this place. (Using translation from Muslim 1283a)

قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ وَنَحْنُ بِجَمْعٍ سَمِعْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ يَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الْمَكَانِ «لَبَّيْكَ اللهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ»

قَامَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ عَلَى الصَّدْعِ الَّذِي فِي الصَّفَا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ هَا هُنَا يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ؟ فَقَالَ هَذَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ لَبَّى حِينَ أَفَاضَ مِنْ جَمْعٍ فَقِيلَ هَذَا أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ سَمِعْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ يَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الْمَكَانِ لَبَّيْكَ اللهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ

I heard Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf saying while delivering a sermon on the pulpit: "Memorize the Quran as Jibrilﷺ memorized it, namely the Surah Al-Baqarah, the Surah in which women are mentioned, and the Surah in which the family of Imran is mentioned." Then I met Ibrahim and informed him of what Al-Hajjaj said. Ibrahim cursed him and then said to me, "Abdul Rahman bin Yazid informed me that he was with Abdullah bin Mas'ud when they arrived at Al-Aqaba (a specific place) and he hid in the valley. Then, he cited the verses from Surah Al-Baqarah and threw seven stones, making the takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar) with each stone. I said, 'O Abu Abdullah, people throw them from above it.' He replied, 'By the One besides Whom none has the right to be worshipped, this is the point where Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed.'"

سَمِعْتُ الْحَجَّاجَ بْنَ يُوسُفَ يَقُولُ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ أَلِّفُوا الْقُرْآنَ كَمَا أَلَّفَهُ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ السُّورَةُ الَّتِي تُذْكَرُ فِيهَا الْبَقَرَةُ وَالسُّورَةُ الَّتِي تُذْكَرُ فِيهَا النِّسَاءُ وَالسُّورَةُ الَّتِي يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا آلُ عِمْرَانَ قَالَ فَلَقِيتُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِقَوْلِهِ فَسَبَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فَأَتَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ فَاسْتَبْطَنَ الْوَادِيَ فَاسْتَعْرَضَهَا فَرَمَاهَا مِنْ بَطْنِ الْوَادِي بِسَبْعِ حَصَيَاتٍ يُكَبِّرُ مَعَ كُلِّ حَصَاةٍ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَرْمُونَهَا مِنْ فَوْقِهَا فَقَالَ هَذَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَقَامُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ

"عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ: أَنَّهُ قَالَ بِجَمْعٍ: سَمِعْتُ الَّذِى أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ هَهُنَا يَقُولُ: لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ".
