that he saw Uthman b. Affan asking ˹for a tumbler of water˺ to perform ablution. (1) He poured water from it over his hands, and (2) washed them thrice, and then (3) put his right hand in the water container, and (4) rinsed his mouth, and (5) washed his nose by putting water in it, and then blowing it out. Then (6) he washed his face thrice and (7) forearms up to the elbows thrice, then (8) passed his ˹wet˺ hands over his head, and then (9) washed each foot thrice.

After that Uthman said, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ performing ablution like this of mine, and he said, 'If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-rakah prayer during which he does not speak (or does not think of anything else or does not break his wudu or does not innovate) then his past sins will be forgiven.'"

أَنَّهُ رَأَى عُثْمَانَ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ (١) فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ مِنْ إِنَائِهِ، (٢) فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ، ثُمَّ (٣) أَدْخَلَ يَمِينَهُ فِي الْوَضُوءِ، ثُمَّ (٤) تَمَضْمَضَ، (٥) وَاسْتَنْشَقَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ، ثُمَّ (٦) غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا، (٧) وَيَدَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ ثَلاَثًا، ثُمَّ (٨) مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ، ثُمَّ (٩) غَسَلَ كُلَّ رِجْلٍ ثَلاَثًا۔

ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأُ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا وَقَالَ «مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لاَ يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ۔»

I saw ʿUthman performing ablution; he washed his hands thrice, rinsed his mouth and then washed his nose, by putting water in it and then blowing it out, and washed his face thrice, and then washed his right forearm up to the elbow thrice, and then the left-forearm up to the elbow thrice, then smeared his head with water, washed his right foot thrice, and then his left foot thrice and said, "I saw Allah's Apostle performing ablution similar to my present ablution, and then he said, 'Whoever performs ablution like my present ablution and then offers two rakʿat in which he does not think of worldly things, all his previous sins will be forgiven."

رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ ؓ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمَرْفِقِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى إِلَى الْمَرْفِقِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ لاَ يُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَهُ فِيهِمَا بِشَىْءٍ إِلاَّ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

"I saw 'Uthman bin 'Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, performing Wudu'. He poured water on his hands three times and washed them, then he rinsed his mouth and his nose, then he washed his face three times, then he washed his right arm to the elbow three times, then the left likewise. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his right foot three times, then the left likewise. Then he said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing Wudu' like I have just done. Then he said: 'Whoever performs Wudu' as I have done, then prays two rak'ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.'"

"I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing Wudu' like I have just done." Then he said: "Whoever performs Wudu' as I have done, then stands and prays two Rak'ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.'"

"Uthman called for water for Wudu'. He washed his hands three times, then he rinsed his mouth and nose, then he washed his face three times, then washed his right hand up to the elbow three times. Then he washed his left hand likewise. Then he washed his left hand likewise. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his right foot up to the ankle three times, and he washed his left foot likewise, and he washed his left foot likewise. Then he said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing Wudu' as I have just done.' Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever performs Wudu' as I have just done, then prayes two Rak'ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.'"

أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ لاَ يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

I saw ‘ Uthman’ b. ‘Affan while he performed ablution. He poured water over his hands three times and then washed them. He then rinsed his mouth and then cleansed his nose with water (three times). He then washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, then washed his left arm in a similar manner; then wiped his head; then washed his right foot three times, then washed his left foot in a similar manner, and then said : I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing ablution like this ablution of mine. Then he (the Prophet) said: He who performs ablution like this ablution of mine and then offered two rakhahs of prayer without allowing his thoughts to be distracted, Allah will pardon all his past sins.

He said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do wudooʿ similar to what I just did, then he said: “Whoever does wudooʿ as I just did, then prays two rak’ahs without letting his mind wander, his previous sins will be forgiven”

رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوًا مِنْ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَا يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

I was standing with ‘Uthman bin ʿAffan ؓ and he said: Shall I not tell you how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ? We said: Yes indeed. He called for water and washed his face three times, rinsed his mouth and nose three times, then he washed his hands up to the elbow three times, then he wiped his head and his ears, and washed his feet three times. Then he said: This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ.

أَلا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ كَيْفَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأُ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى فَدَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى مِرْفَقَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأُ

[Machine] Uthman performed ablution, then gargled, sniffed water into his nose, washed his face three times, his arms three times, wiped his head, and washed his feet three times. Then he said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform ablution as I just did, then he said, 'Whoever performs ablution like my ablution and prays two units of prayer without allowing his thoughts to wander in them, his past sins will be forgiven.'"

أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ تَوَضَّأَ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ كَمَا تَوَضَّأْتُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَا يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ»

"I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing Wudu' like I have just done." Then he said: "Whoever performs Wudu' as I have done, then stands and prays two Rak'ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 85)

"I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing Wudu' like I have just done." Then he said: "Whoever performs Wudu' as I have done, then stands and prays two Rak'ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 85)

(the freed slave of ʿUthman bin ʿAffan) I saw ʿUthman bin ʿAffan asking (for a tumbler of water) to perform ablution (and when it was brought) he poured water from it over his hands and washed them thrice and then put his right hand in the water container and rinsed his mouth and washed his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out. Then he washed his face thrice and (then) forearms up to the elbows thrice, then passed his wet hands over his head and then washed each foot thrice. After that ʿUthman said, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ performing ablution like this of mine, and he said, 'If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-rakʿat prayer during which he does not think of anything else (not related to the present prayer) then his past sins will be forgiven. رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ ؓ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ يَدَهُ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ كَوُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَا يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا بِشَيْءٍ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

[Machine] I saw Uthman bin Affan perform ablution (wudu'). He poured water three times over his hands, then washed them. Then he rinsed his mouth and nose, then washed his face three times. Then he washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, followed by his left arm the same way. Then he wiped his head, then washed his right foot three times, followed by his left foot the same way. Then he said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform ablution similar to my ablution, then he said, 'Whoever performs ablution like my ablution, then prays two Rak'ahs, without talking to himself in them, his previous sins will be forgiven."

رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ ؓ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَا يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

"رأيتُ عثمانَ توضأَ فَأفْرغَ على يديهِ ثلاثًا فغسلهما، ثم مَضْمضَ ثلاثًا واستنْثَر ثَلاثًا، ثم غسلَ وجههُ ثلاثًا، ثم غسل يده اليُمنى إلى المرفق ثلاثًا، ثم غسل اليُسرى ثلاثًا مثل ذلك، ثم مسحَ رأسَهُ، ثم غسل قدمه اليمنى تلاثا، ثم اليسرى ثلاثًا، ثم قال: رأيتُ رسولَ الله ﷺ يتوضأُ نحوًا منْ وُضُوئِى هذَا ثم قال من توضأ نحو وضوئى هذا وفى لفظ: مثل وضوئى هذا، ثم صلَّى ركعتينِ لا يُحدِّثُ فِيهمَا نفسهُ، غُفِرَ لَهُ ما تقدمَ من ذنبهِ ".

"عَنْ أَبِى عَلقَمَةَ، عَن ابنِ عَفَّانَ أنَّهُ دَعَا يَوْمًا بِوَضُوء، ثُمَّ دَعَا نَاسًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسولِ الله ﷺ فَأفْرَغَ يَدَهُ اليُمْنى عَلَى يَدِهِ اليُسْرَى وَغسَلَهَا ثَلاثًا، ثُمَّ مَضْمَض ثَلاثًا، وَاسَتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَيهِ ثَلاثا ثلاثًا إلَى المِرْفَقيْنِ، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ برَأسِه، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ برجْلَيْهِ فَأنْقَاهُما، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رأَيْتُ رسُول الله ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأ مِثْلَ هَذَا الوُضُوءِ الَّذِى رَأيْتُمُونِى تَوضَّأتُهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَنْ تَوَضأ فَأحسنَ الوُضُوءَ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَينِ كانَ مِنْ ذنوبِه كَيومَ وَلَدتْهُ أُمُّهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَكَذَلِكَ يَا فُلاَنُ؟ قَال: نَعَمْ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَكَذَلكَ يَا فُلاَنُ؟ قَالَ: نعم، حَتَّى اسْتَشْهَدَ نَاسًا مَن أَصْحَابِ رَسولِ الله ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ: الحمدُ لله الذَّى وَافَقْتُمونِى عَلَى هَذَا".
