that he saw Uthman b. Affan asking ˹for a tumbler of water˺ to perform ablution. (1) He poured water from it over his hands, and (2) washed them thrice, and then (3) put his right hand in the water container, and (4) rinsed his mouth, and (5) washed his nose by putting water in it, and then blowing it out. Then (6) he washed his face thrice and (7) forearms up to the elbows thrice, then (8) passed his ˹wet˺ hands over his head, and then (9) washed each foot thrice.

After that Uthman said, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ performing ablution like this of mine, and he said, 'If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-rakah prayer during which he does not speak (or does not think of anything else or does not break his wudu or does not innovate) then his past sins will be forgiven.'"

أَنَّهُ رَأَى عُثْمَانَ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ (١) فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ مِنْ إِنَائِهِ، (٢) فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ، ثُمَّ (٣) أَدْخَلَ يَمِينَهُ فِي الْوَضُوءِ، ثُمَّ (٤) تَمَضْمَضَ، (٥) وَاسْتَنْشَقَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ، ثُمَّ (٦) غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا، (٧) وَيَدَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ ثَلاَثًا، ثُمَّ (٨) مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ، ثُمَّ (٩) غَسَلَ كُلَّ رِجْلٍ ثَلاَثًا۔

ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأُ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا وَقَالَ «مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لاَ يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ۔»

I saw ʿUthman performing ablution; he washed his hands thrice, rinsed his mouth and then washed his nose, by putting water in it and then blowing it out, and washed his face thrice, and then washed his right forearm up to the elbow thrice, and then the left-forearm up to the elbow thrice, then smeared his head with water, washed his right foot thrice, and then his left foot thrice and said, "I saw Allah's Apostle performing ablution similar to my present ablution, and then he said, 'Whoever performs ablution like my present ablution and then offers two rakʿat in which he does not think of worldly things, all his previous sins will be forgiven."

رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ ؓ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمَرْفِقِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى إِلَى الْمَرْفِقِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ لاَ يُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَهُ فِيهِمَا بِشَىْءٍ إِلاَّ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

I saw ‘ Uthman’ b. ‘Affan while he performed ablution. He poured water over his hands three times and then washed them. He then rinsed his mouth and then cleansed his nose with water (three times). He then washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, then washed his left arm in a similar manner; then wiped his head; then washed his right foot three times, then washed his left foot in a similar manner, and then said : I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing ablution like this ablution of mine. Then he (the Prophet) said: He who performs ablution like this ablution of mine and then offered two rakhahs of prayer without allowing his thoughts to be distracted, Allah will pardon all his past sins.

رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ مِثْلَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ مِثْلَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لاَ يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

The ablution water was brought to the Messenger ﷺ and he performed ablution; he washed his hands up to wrists three times, then washed his forearms three times. He then rinsed his mouth and snuffed up water three times; then he wiped his head and ears inside and outside.

أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ ظَاهِرِهِمَا وَبَاطِنِهِمَا

"I saw 'Uthman bin 'Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, performing Wudu'. He poured water on his hands three times and washed them, then he rinsed his mouth and his nose, then he washed his face three times, then he washed his right arm to the elbow three times, then the left likewise. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his right foot three times, then the left likewise. Then he said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing Wudu' like I have just done. Then he said: 'Whoever performs Wudu' as I have done, then prays two rak'ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.'"

"I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing Wudu' like I have just done." Then he said: "Whoever performs Wudu' as I have done, then stands and prays two Rak'ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.'"

أَنَّهُ رَأَى عُثَّمَانَ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ مِنْ إِنَائِهِ فَغَسَلَهَا ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ يَمِينَهُ فِي الْوَضُوءِ فَتَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَيَدَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ كُلَّ رِجْلٍ مِنْ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ مِثْلَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لاَ يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ بِشَىْءٍ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

"I saw 'Ali call for a chair and he sat down, then he called for water in a vessel and washed his hands three times, then he rinsed his mouth and nose with one hand, three times. Then he washed his face three times, and his hands three times. Then he dipped his hand in the vessel and wiped his head, then he washed each foot three times. Then he said: 'Whoever would like to see how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Wudu', this is his Wudu'.'"

شَهِدْتُ عَلِيًّا دَعَا بِكُرْسِيٍّ فَقَعَدَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فِي تَوْرٍ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ بِكَفٍّ وَاحِدٍ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَيَدَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَمَسَ يَدَهُ فِي الإِنَاءِ فَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَهَذَا وَضُوؤُهُ

I saw 'Ali performing Wudu'. He washed his hands three times, and rinsed his mouth three times and his nose three times, and he washed his face three times and each forearm three times. Then he wiped his head and washed each foot three times. Then he said: 'This is the Wudu' of the Prophet ﷺ.'"

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثًا وَتَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا قَالَ هَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ

"Uthman called for water for Wudu'. He washed his hands three times, then he rinsed his mouth and nose, then he washed his face three times, then washed his right hand up to the elbow three times. Then he washed his left hand likewise. Then he washed his left hand likewise. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his right foot up to the ankle three times, and he washed his left foot likewise, and he washed his left foot likewise. Then he said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing Wudu' as I have just done.' Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever performs Wudu' as I have just done, then prayes two Rak'ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.'"

أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ لاَ يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

[AI] Uthman performed ablution, then gargled, sniffed water into his nose, washed his face three times, his arms three times, wiped his head, and washed his feet three times. Then he said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform ablution as I just did, then he said, 'Whoever performs ablution like my ablution and prays two units of prayer without allowing his thoughts to wander in them, his past sins will be forgiven.'"

أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ تَوَضَّأَ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ كَمَا تَوَضَّأْتُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَا يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ»

I saw ʿUthman bin ʿAffan ؓ do wudooʿ, He poured water onto his hands three times and washed them, then he rinsed his mouth and nose, then he washed his face three times, then he washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, then the left arm likewise, then he wiped his head, then he washed his right foot three times, then the left foot likewise. He said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do wudooʿ similar to what I just did, then he said: “Whoever does wudooʿ as I just did, then prays two rak’ahs without letting his mind wander, his previous sins will be forgiven”

رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوًا مِنْ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَا يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

I entered upon Ibn Darah, the freed slave of ʿUthman, and he heard me rinsing my mouth. He said: O Muhammad! I said: Here I am. He said:Shall I not tell you about the wudoo’ of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I saw ʿUthman when he was in al-Maqaʿid. He called for water for wudoo’, then he rinsed his mouth three times, rinsed his nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his arms three times, wiped his head three times and washed his feet, then he said: Whoever would like to see how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudoo’, this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ.

عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ وَهُوَ بِالْمَقَاعِدِ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَهَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do wudoo’: he washed his face three times and his hands three times, and he washed his arms three times each, and wiped his head, and washed his feet thoroughly.

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًاوَيَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ غَسْلًا

Some water for wudoo’ was brought to ʿAli ؓ . He rinsed his mouth and nose three times, and washed his face three times, and washed his hands and forearms three times. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his feet. Then he said: This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do wudoo’. Then he recited some Qurʿan. Then he said: This is for the one who is not junub; as for the one who is junub, no - (he should not recite), not even one verse.

أُتِيَ عَلِيٌّ بِوَضُوءٍ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ثُمَّ قَالَهَذَا لِمَنْ لَيْسَ بِجُنُبٍ فَأَمَّا الْجُنُبُ فَلا وَلا آيَةَ

I saw ‘Ali ؓ urinate in ar-Rahbah, then he called for water and did wudoo’. He washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth and nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his forearms three times each, wiped his head and washed his feet three times each. Then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do as you have seen me do.

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا بَالَ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَتَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ كَالَّذِي رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ

‘Ali ؓ said: Shall I not show you how the Prophet ﷺ of Allah used to do wudooʿ? We said: Yes indeed. He said: Bring me a large vessel and a small vessel of water. He washed his hands three times; took water into his nose three times and blew it out three times; and he washed his face three times; he washed his arms up to the elbows three times; he wiped his head three times; and he washed his feet three times.

عَلِيٌّ أَلا أُرِيكُمْ كَيْفَ كَانَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأُ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَأْتُونِي بِطَسْتٍ وَتَوْرٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاثًا

أَنَّهُ رَأَى عُثْمَانَ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ مِنْ إِنَائِهِ فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ يَمِينَهُ فِي الْوُضُوءِ فَتَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَدَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ كُلَّ رِجْلٍ مِنْ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ «رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأُ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا» ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ مِثْلَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَا يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ»

قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ تَوَضَّأَ وَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ ظَاهِرِهِمَا وَبَاطِنِهِمَا وَخَلَّلَ أَصَابِعَ قَدَمَيْهِ وَخَلَّلَ لِحْيَتَهُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ قَبْلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ كَالَّذِي رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُهُ يُرْوَى عَنْ عُثْمَانَ إِلَّا مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ

قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ هَكَذَا وَقَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ دُونَ هَذَا كَفَاهُ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى أَبُو سَلَمَةَ عَنْ حُمْرَانَ إِلَّا هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ

أَنَّهُ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلَاثًا وَيَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ الْقَدَمَ الْيُمْنَى ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ الْيُسْرَى ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ

أَنَّهُ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ وَعِنْدَهُ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَفْرَغَ بِيَدِهِ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى الْيُسْرَى وَغَسَلَهُمَا ثَلَاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ فَأَنْقَاهُمَا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ مِثْلَ هَذَا الْوُضُوءِ وَقَالَ تَوَضَّئُوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَوَضَّأْتُ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَحْسَنَ وضُوءَهُ ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ كَانَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِ كَيَوْمِ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّهُ

عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَهَرَاقَ الْمَاءَ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَوَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ حَتَّى كَادَ أَنْ يَقْطُرَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا كَانَ يَتَوَضَّأُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى الْمِنْهَالُ عَنْ زِرٍّ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ؓ حَدِيثًا مُسْنَدًا إِلَّا هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ

[AI] I heard al-Miqdam bin Ma'di Karib say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought with ablution." So he performed ablution, washed his hands three times, then washed his face three times, then washed his arms three times, then gargled and sniffed water three times, then wiped his head, his ears (both outer and inner parts), and washed his feet three times.

سَمِعْتُ الْمِقْدَامَ بْنَ مَعْدِي كَرِبٍ يَقُولُ «أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِوَضُوءٍ» فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ ظَاهِرِهِمَا وَبَاطِنِهِمَا وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا

"I saw 'Ali call for a chair and he sat down, then he called for water in a vessel and washed his hands three times, then he rinsed his mouth and nose with one hand, three times. Then he washed his face three times, and his hands three times. Then he dipped his hand in the vessel and wiped his head, then he washed each foot three times. Then he said: 'Whoever would like to see how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Wudu', this is his Wudu'.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 94)

"I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing Wudu' like I have just done." Then he said: "Whoever performs Wudu' as I have done, then stands and prays two Rak'ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 85)

(the freed slave of ʿUthman bin ʿAffan) I saw ʿUthman bin ʿAffan asking (for a tumbler of water) to perform ablution (and when it was brought) he poured water from it over his hands and washed them thrice and then put his right hand in the water container and rinsed his mouth and washed his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out. Then he washed his face thrice and (then) forearms up to the elbows thrice, then passed his wet hands over his head and then washed each foot thrice. After that ʿUthman said, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ performing ablution like this of mine, and he said, 'If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-rakʿat prayer during which he does not think of anything else (not related to the present prayer) then his past sins will be forgiven. ' (Using translation from Bukhārī 164)

I saw 'Ali performing Wudu'. He washed his hands three times, and rinsed his mouth three times and his nose three times, and he washed his face three times and each forearm three times. Then he wiped his head and washed each foot three times. Then he said: 'This is the Wudu' of the Prophet ﷺ.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 115)

I saw ʿUthman bin ʿAffan ؓ do wudooʿ, He poured water onto his hands three times and washed them, then he rinsed his mouth and nose, then he washed his face three times, then he washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, then the left arm likewise, then he wiped his head, then he washed his right foot three times, then the left foot likewise. He said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do wudooʿ similar to what I just did, then he said: “Whoever does wudooʿ as I just did, then prays two rak’ahs without letting his mind wander, his previous sins will be forgiven” (Using translation from Aḥmad 421)

[AI] "That Ali was brought a chair, so he sat on it. Then he was brought a container of water, so he washed his hands three times. Then he rinsed his mouth and nostrils with one handful of water. He washed his face three times with one hand, and washed his arms three times. He put his hand in the container, then wiped his head with it. He then wiped his head and face with both hands, and I do not know if he wiped them forwards or backwards. He washed his feet three times, then he said, 'Whoever wants to see the purification of the Prophet, ﷺ , should look at this purification of his, ﷺ .'"

أَنَّ عَلِيًّا ؓ أُتِيَ بِكُرْسِيٍّ فَقَعَدَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِكُوزٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا مَعَ الِاسْتِنْشَاقِ بِمَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا بِيَدٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ فِي التَّوْرِ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأَقْبَلَ بِيَدَيْهِ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ وَلَا أَدْرِي أَدْبَرَ بِهِمَا أَمْ لَا؟ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى طُهُورِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَهَذَا طُهُورُهُ ﷺ

[AI] I saw Uthman bin Affan perform ablution (wudu'). He poured water three times over his hands, then washed them. Then he rinsed his mouth and nose, then washed his face three times. Then he washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, followed by his left arm the same way. Then he wiped his head, then washed his right foot three times, followed by his left foot the same way. Then he said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform ablution similar to my ablution, then he said, 'Whoever performs ablution like my ablution, then prays two Rak'ahs, without talking to himself in them, his previous sins will be forgiven."

رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ ؓ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا فَغَسَلَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِي هَذَا ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَا يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

I entered upon Ibn Darah, the freed slave of ʿUthman, and he heard me rinsing my mouth. He said: O Muhammad! I said: Here I am. He said:Shall I not tell you about the wudoo’ of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I saw ʿUthman when he was in al-Maqaʿid. He called for water for wudoo’, then he rinsed his mouth three times, rinsed his nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his arms three times, wiped his head three times and washed his feet, then he said: Whoever would like to see how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudoo’, this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ. عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ وَهُوَ بِالْمَقَاعِدِ فَدَعَا بِإِنَاءٍ فَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ قَدْمَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلْيَنْظُرْ إِلَى وُضُوئِي هَذَا وَقَدْ ذَكَرَ غَيْرُهُ التَّثْلِيثَ فِي الْقَدْمَيْنِ أَيْضًا

[AI] About the ablution of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he poured water into the container and then said, "Where is the one asking about the ablution of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" So he washed his hands three times, his face three times, his arms three times, and wiped his head until he felt the wetness. He washed his feet three times, three times. Then he said, "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution." The narration of the jurist does not include his statement, "until he felt the wetness," but the rest of the narration is the same.

عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَرَاقَ الْمَاءَ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَوَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ حَتَّى أَلَمَّ أَنْ يَقْطُرَ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأُ لَيْسَ فِي رِوَايَةِ الْفَقِيهِ قَوْلُهُ حَتَّى أَلَمَّ أَنْ يَقْطُرَ وَالْبَاقِي سَوَاءٌ

"رأيتُ عثمانَ توضأَ فَأفْرغَ على يديهِ ثلاثًا فغسلهما، ثم مَضْمضَ ثلاثًا واستنْثَر ثَلاثًا، ثم غسلَ وجههُ ثلاثًا، ثم غسل يده اليُمنى إلى المرفق ثلاثًا، ثم غسل اليُسرى ثلاثًا مثل ذلك، ثم مسحَ رأسَهُ، ثم غسل قدمه اليمنى تلاثا، ثم اليسرى ثلاثًا، ثم قال: رأيتُ رسولَ الله ﷺ يتوضأُ نحوًا منْ وُضُوئِى هذَا ثم قال من توضأ نحو وضوئى هذا وفى لفظ: مثل وضوئى هذا، ثم صلَّى ركعتينِ لا يُحدِّثُ فِيهمَا نفسهُ، غُفِرَ لَهُ ما تقدمَ من ذنبهِ ".

" عَن ابْنِ دَارَةَ قَالَ: رَأيْتُ عُثْمَانَ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَمَضْمَن ثَلاَثًا، وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا، وَغَسَل وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا، وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأسِهِ ثَلاَثًا، وغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَنْ أَحَبَّ أنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ فَهَذَا وضُوءُ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ ".

"عن حمران قال: رأيت عثمان توضأ فغسل يديه ثلاثًا، وغسل وجهه ثلاثًا، وغسل ذراعيه ثلاثًا، ومسح رأسه ثلاثًا، ثم غسل قدميه ثلاثًا، ثم قال: رأيت رسول الله ﷺ فتوضأ هكذا وقال: من توضأ دون هذا كفاه".

"عَنْ عَبدِ الله بنِ جَعْفَر، عَنْ عُثْمانَ بنِ عَفَّانَ أَنَّه تَوَضَّأ فَغَسَل يَدَيْه ثَلاثًا، كُلَّ وَاحِدَة مِنْهُما، وَاسْتَنثَر ثَلاثًا، ومَضْمَضَ ثَلاثًا، وَغَسلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وغَسَلَ ذِرَاعيْهِ كُلَّ واحدٍ مِنهُما ثَلاثًا ثلاثًا، وَمَسَح بِرَأسِه ثَلاثًا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا، كُل وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْهُمَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسولَ الله ﷺ يَتَوَضأ هَكَذَا".

"عَنْ أَبِى عَلقَمَةَ، عَن ابنِ عَفَّانَ أنَّهُ دَعَا يَوْمًا بِوَضُوء، ثُمَّ دَعَا نَاسًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسولِ الله ﷺ فَأفْرَغَ يَدَهُ اليُمْنى عَلَى يَدِهِ اليُسْرَى وَغسَلَهَا ثَلاثًا، ثُمَّ مَضْمَض ثَلاثًا، وَاسَتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَيهِ ثَلاثا ثلاثًا إلَى المِرْفَقيْنِ، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ برَأسِه، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ برجْلَيْهِ فَأنْقَاهُما، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رأَيْتُ رسُول الله ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأ مِثْلَ هَذَا الوُضُوءِ الَّذِى رَأيْتُمُونِى تَوضَّأتُهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَنْ تَوَضأ فَأحسنَ الوُضُوءَ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَينِ كانَ مِنْ ذنوبِه كَيومَ وَلَدتْهُ أُمُّهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَكَذَلِكَ يَا فُلاَنُ؟ قَال: نَعَمْ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَكَذَلكَ يَا فُلاَنُ؟ قَالَ: نعم، حَتَّى اسْتَشْهَدَ نَاسًا مَن أَصْحَابِ رَسولِ الله ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ: الحمدُ لله الذَّى وَافَقْتُمونِى عَلَى هَذَا".

"عَنْ شَقِيقِ بنِ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ عُثَمانَ تَوَضَّأ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسَتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا، وَغسَل وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وَخَلَّلَ لِحْيَتَه ثَلاثًا، وَغَسَل ذِرَاعَيْه ثَلاثا ثَلاثا، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأسِه ثَلاثا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْه ثَلاثًا ثلاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسولَ الله ﷺ فَعَلَ هَذَا".

"عن عَبْدِ خَير قَالَ: تَوَضَّأ علِى فمَضْمَض ثَلاثًا، واسْتَنْشَق ثَلاثًا مِنْ كَفٍّ وَاحِد، وَغَسَل وَجْهَه ثَلاثًا، ثُم ادْخَلَ يَدَه فِى الرَّكْوَةِ، فَمَسَحَ رَأسَه، وَغَسلَ رِجْلَيْه، ثُم قَالَ هذَا وضُوءُ نَبِيكمْ ﷺ "

"عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ أَنَّ عَليّا سُئِلَ عَنْ وضُوءِ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا، وَذِراعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا، وَمَسَح عَلَى رَأسهِ حَتَّى لَمَّا يَقْطُرْ، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: هَكَذَا كَانَ وضُوءُ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ ".

"عن عبد خير، عن عَلِىٍّ: أَنَّهُ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا، وَمَضْمَضَ، وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا، وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وَذِراَعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأسِهِ ثَلاَثًا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَنْ أَحَبَّ أنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ كَامِلًا فَليَنْظُرْ إِلَى هَذَا".

"تَوَضَّأ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثًا وَتَمَضْمَضَ، وَاسْتَنشَقَ ثَلاَثًا، وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وَذرَاعَيْه ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا، وَمَسَحَ رَأسَهُ، وَمَسَحَ ظَاهِرَ أُذُنَيْه وَبَاطِنَهُمَا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْه ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا، وَقَالَ: هَذَا الوُضُوءُ، مَنْ زَاد أَوْ نَقَصَ، فَقَدْ ظَلَمَ وأسَاءَ".
