The word that brings salvation
[AI] Some men from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, were so distressed over him that some of them were overcome by whisperings. Uthman said that he was one of them. While he was sitting in one of the forts, Umar ibn al-Khattab ᴿᴬ passed by him and greeted him, but he did not notice him. Umar went on until he entered upon Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ and said, "Shall I not tell you something astonishing? I passed by Uthman and greeted him, but he did not return my greeting." Then Abu Bakr and Umar came until they reached him, and both of them greeted him. Abu Bakr said, "Your brother Umar came to me and claimed that he passed by you and greeted you, but you did not return the greeting." Uthman said, "So I said: By Allah ﷻ, I did not notice you when you passed by, and you did not greet." Abu Bakr said, "Uthman has spoken the truth, and something preoccupied you from that." He said, "Yes." He said, "What was it?" I said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken before I could ask him about the salvation of this matter." Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ said, "I had asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that." Uthman said, "So I said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you; tell me it." Abu Bakr said, "I said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what is the salvation of this matter?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever accepts from me the word that I offered to my uncle, it will be salvation for him." This is how Mamar and Salih ibn Kaysan narrated it, and more than one followed them in this narration from Zuhri, from a man of the Ansar. Abdullah ibn Bishr also narrated this hadith from Zuhri, from Saeed ibn al-Musayyib, from Uthman, from Abu Bakr. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahim and al-Fadl ibn Sahl narrated it to us, both saying: Abu Ghassan narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Salam ibn Harb narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Bishr, from Zuhri, from Saeed ibn al-Musayyib, from Uthman ibn Affan, from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet ﷺ, with something similar to this hadith. Abu Bakr said: I only think that Abdullah ibn Bishr is the one who erred, and the hadith is the hadith of Mamar and Salih ibn Kaysan along with those who followed them. Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi also narrated it from the son of Zuhri's brother, from Zuhri, from Saeed ibn al-Musayyib, from Abdullah ibn Amr, from Uthman, from Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr said: This hadith is among those in which Muhammad ibn Umar was not followed in his narration. We only wanted to mention it so that it may be known that he did narrate it in this way.
