Salim b. 'Abdullah reported on the authority of his father that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be. upon him) used to observe Nafl (supererogatory) prayer on his ride no matter in what direction it turned its face, and he observed Witr too on it, but did not observe obligatory prayer on it. (Using translation from Muslim 700i)

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُسَبِّحُ عَلَى الرَّاحِلَةِ قِبَلَ أَيِّ وَجْهٍ تَوَجَّهُ وَيُوتِرُ عَلَيْهَا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ لَا يُصَلِّي عَلَيْهَا الْمَكْتُوبَةَ»

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , used to perform tasbeeh (glorification of Allah) while riding, in whichever direction he faced, and he would also offer the witr prayer on the mount, except that he would not offer the obligatory prayers on it.

[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to recite tasbih on his riding animal before any direction he faced and he used to perform the odd-numbered prayer on it, except that he did not pray on it the obligatory prayer. This is not mentioned in the hadith of Abu Dawood before

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Night prayer is offered as two rakʿat followed by two rakʿat and so on, and if you want to finish it, pray only one rakʿa which will be witr for all the previous rakʿat." Al-Qasim said, "Since we attained the age of puberty we have seen some people offering a three-rakʿat prayer as witr and all that is permissible. I hope there will be no harm in it."  

البخاري:٩٩٣حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرٌو أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ صَلاَةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تَنْصَرِفَ فَارْكَعْ رَكْعَةً تُوتِرُ لَكَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ قَالَ الْقَاسِمُ وَرَأَيْنَا أُنَاسًا مُنْذُ أَدْرَكْنَا يُوتِرُونَ بِثَلاَثٍ وَإِنَّ كُلاًّ لَوَاسِعٌ أَرْجُو أَنْ لاَ يَكُونَ بِشَىْءٍ مِنْهُ بَأْسٌ

The people mentioned the fire and the bell (they suggested those as signals to indicate the starting of prayers), and by that they mentioned the Jews and the Christians. Then Bilal was ordered to pronounce Adhan for the prayer by saying its wordings twice, and for the Iqama (the call for the actual standing for the prayers in rows) by saying its wordings once. (Iqama is pronounced when the people are ready for the prayer).

The people mentioned the fire and the bell (as means proposed for announcing the time of prayer) and by such a suggestion they referred to the Jews and the Christians. But Bilal was ordered, "Pronounce the words of the Adhan (i.e. call for the prayer) twice and the Iqama once only."

I was going to Mecca in the company of ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar and when I apprehended the approaching dawn, I dismounted and offered the witr prayer and then joined him. ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar said, "Where have you been?" I replied, "I apprehended the approaching dawn so I dismounted and prayed the witr prayer." ʿAbdullah said, "Isn't it sufficient for you to follow the good example of Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" I replied, "Yes, by Allah." He said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray witr on the back of the camel (while on a journey)."  

البخاري:٩٩٩حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ فَقَالَ

سَعِيدٌ فَلَمَّا خَشِيتُ الصُّبْحَ نَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ ثُمَّ لَحِقْتُهُ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ أَيْنَ كُنْتَ فَقُلْتُ خَشِيتُ الصُّبْحَ فَنَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَلَيْسَ لَكَ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى وَاللَّهِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ

I was travelling along with Ibn 'Umar on the way to Mecca. Sa'id said: When I apprehended dawn, I dismounted (the ride) and observed Witr prayer and then again joined him. Ibn 'Umar said to me: Where were you? I said: I apprehended the appearance of dawn, so I dismounted and observed Witr prayer. Upon this 'Abdullah said: Is there not a model pattern for you in the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I said: Yes, by Allah, and (then) he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe Witr prayer on the camel's back.  

مسلم:٧٠٠fوَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ قَالَ

سَعِيدٌ فَلَمَّا خَشِيتُ الصُّبْحَ نَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكْتُهُ فَقَالَ لِي ابْنُ عُمَرَ أَيْنَ كُنْتَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ خَشِيتُ الْفَجْرَ فَنَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَلَيْسَ لَكَ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُسْوَةٌ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى وَاللَّهِ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu Bakr ibn Umar that Said ibn Yasar said, ''I was travelling with Abdullah ibn Umar on the road to Makka, and fearing that it was nearly dawn. I dismounted and prayed witr. Abdullah said, 'Is there not a model for you in the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' I said, 'Of course, by Allah!' He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray witr on his camel.' "  

مالك:٧-١٥وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ

قَالَ كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ قَالَ سَعِيدٌ فَلَمَّا خَشِيتُ الصُّبْحَ نَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكْتُهُ فَقَالَ لِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ أَيْنَ كُنْتَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ خَشِيتُ الصُّبْحَ فَنَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَلَيْسَ لَكَ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى وَاللَّهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ  

ذِكْرُ خَبَرٍ رَابِعٍ يُصَرِّحُ بِأَنَّ الْوِتْرَ غَيْرُ فَرْضٍ

“I was with Ibn ‘Umar and I lagged behind and prayed Witr. He said: ‘What kept you?’ I said: ‘I was praying Witr.’ He said: ‘Do you not have the best of examples in the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ I said: ‘Of course.’ He said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray Witr while riding his camel.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1200)   

ابن حبّان:٢٤١٣أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ

كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ فَلَمَّا خَشِيتُ الصُّبْحَ نَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكْتُهُ فَقَالَ لِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ أَيْنَ كُنْتَ؟ فَقُلْتُ خَشِيتُ الْفَجْرَ فَنَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ لَكَ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُسْوَةٌ؟ » فَقُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ «فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ»

Anas said, "Bilal was ordered to pronounce the wording of Adhan twice and of Iqama once only." The sub narrator Ismaʿil said, "I mentioned that to Aiyub and he added (to that), "Except Iqama (i.e. Qadqamat- is-salat which should be said twice).

Ibn ʿUmar (while on a journey) used to offer the prayer and the witr on his mount (Rahila). He said that the Prophet ﷺ used to do so.  

البخاري:١٠٩٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الأَعْلَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ قَالَ وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ ؓ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ وَيُوتِرُ عَلَيْهَا وَيُخْبِرُ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَفْعَلُهُ

Ibn Umar used to pray witr on his camel and he mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ used to do that.  

النسائي:١٦٨٧أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ الْحُرِّ عَنْ نَافِعٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَيَذْكُرُ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ

Once I went to Abu- Saʿid Al-Khudri and asked him, "Won't you come with us to the date-palm trees to have a talk?" So Abu Saʿid went out and I asked him, "Tell me what you heard from the Prophet ﷺ about the Night of Qadr." Abu Saʿid replied, "Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Iʿtikaf (seclusion) on the first ten days of the month of Ramadan and we did the same with him. Gabriel came to him and said, 'The night you are looking for is ahead of you.' So the Prophet ﷺ performed the Iʿtikaf in the middle (second) ten days of the month of Ramadan and we too performed Iʿtikaf with him. Gabriel came to him and said, 'The night which you are looking for is ahead of you.' In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan the Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon saying, 'Whoever has performed Iʿtikaf with me should continue it. I have been shown the Night of "Qadr", but have forgotten its date, but it is in the odd nights of the last ten nights. I saw in my dream that I was prostrating in mud and water.' In those days the roof of the mosque was made of branches of date-palm trees. At that time the sky was clear and no cloud was visible, but suddenly a cloud came and it rained. The Prophet ﷺ led us in the prayer and I saw the traces of mud on the forehead and on the nose of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So it was the confirmation of that dream."  

البخاري:٨١٣حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ عَنْ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ

انْطَلَقْتُ إِلَى أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ فَقُلْتُ أَلاَ تَخْرُجُ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ نَتَحَدَّثْ فَخَرَجَ فَقَالَ قُلْتُ حَدِّثْنِي مَا سَمِعْتَ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ قَالَ اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَشْرَ الأُوَلِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَاعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَهُ فَأَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الَّذِي تَطْلُبُ أَمَامَكَ فَاعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ فَاعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَهُ فَأَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الَّذِي تَطْلُبُ أَمَامَكَ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ خَطِيبًا صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ مَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي نُسِّيتُهَا وَإِنَّهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فِي وِتْرٍ وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ كَأَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي طِينٍ وَمَاءٍ وَكَانَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ جَرِيدَ النَّخْلِ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ شَيْئًا فَجَاءَتْ قَزْعَةٌ فَأُمْطِرْنَا فَصَلَّى بِنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ وَالْمَاءِ عَلَى جَبْهَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَرْنَبَتِهِ تَصْدِيقَ رُؤْيَاهُ

I asked Abu Saʿid Al-Khudri, "Did you hear Messenger of Allah ﷺ talking about the Night of Qadr?" He replied in the affirmative and said, "Once we were in Iʿtikaf with Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the middle ten days of (Ramadan) and we came out of it in the morning of the twentieth, and Messenger of Allah ﷺdelivered a sermon on the 20th (of Ramadan) and said, 'I was informed (of the date) of the Night of Qadr (in my dream) but had forgotten it. So, look for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. I saw myself prostrating in mud and water on that night (as a sign of the Night of Qadr). So, whoever had been in Iʿtikaf with Messenger of Allah ﷺ should return for it.' The people returned to the mosque (for Iʿtikaf). There was no trace of clouds in the sky. But all of a sudden a cloud came and it rained. Then the prayer was established (they stood for the prayer) and Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrated in mud and water and I saw mud over the forehead and the nose of the Prophet.

[Machine] I said, "Will you not come with us to the palm trees so we can talk?" He said, "Okay." So he went out with us. I said, "Tell me what you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying about the Night of Decree." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe the first ten days of Ramadan in Itikaf, so we also observed Itikaf with him. Then Jibril came to him and said, 'What you are seeking is ahead of you, so observe Itikaf during the middle ten days of Ramadan.' So we observed Itikaf with him during the middle ten days. Then Jibril came to him and said, 'What you are seeking is ahead of you.' When the morning of the twentieth of Ramadan came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood as a preacher and said, 'Whoever observed Itikaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ should return, for I saw the Night of Decree but I forgot it, and it is in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan, and I saw myself prostrating in mud and water.' Someone asked, 'What do you see in the sky?' He said, 'A cloud like a pitcher.' Then a cloud came and the roof of the mosque was made of palm branches, so it rained on us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer, and I saw the traces of mud and water on the forehead of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his beard, confirming his vision."

[Machine] We memorized the night of Al-Qadr in a group of Quraysh. So, I went to Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, who was a friend of mine, and I said, "Come out with us to the palm grove." He went out with us wearing a garment he had, and I said, "Have you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioning the night of Al-Qadr?" He replied, "Yes. We performed I'tikaf (seclusion for worship) with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the middle ten days of Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon on the morning of the twentieth (night), and he said, 'I saw the night of Al-Qadr but then I forgot it, or he said, I missed it, so seek it in the last ten nights, in the odd-numbered nights. Indeed, I saw myself prostrating in mud and water. So, whoever performed I'tikaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ should return.' So, we returned, and we did not see any clouds in the sky. Then a cloud came and it started raining until the roofs of the mosque started dripping. The rainwater was of the color of the germs of the palm tree, and the prayer was established. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in the water and mud until I saw the signs of mud on his forehead."  

أحمد:١١٥٨٠حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ الدَّسْتُوَائِيُّ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ

تَذَاكَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَأَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ وَكَانَ صَدِيقًا لِي فَقُلْتُ اخْرُجْ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِفَخَرَجَ وَعَلَيْهِ خَمِيصَةٌ لَهُ فَقُلْتُ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْوَسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَخَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ فَقَالَ أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا أَوْ قَالَ فَنَسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي الْوَتْرِ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَرَجَعْنَا وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَجَاءَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَكَانَ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ وَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْجُدُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ فِي جَبْهَتِهِ

[Machine] I came to Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri and said, "O Abu Sa'eed, come out with us to the palm trees so that we can talk." He said, "Yes." He called for a garment to wear, then he came out. Then when the night came, the sky was covered with clouds like mountains, and it rained until the roof of the mosque started to leak. I looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in water and mud until I saw the mud on the hair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."  

ابن حبّان:٣٦٨٥أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ

أَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ اخْرُجْ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ نَتَحَدَّثُ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِخَمِيصَةٍ يَلْبَسُهَا ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِعَشْرٍ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ قَامَ فِينَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ وَإِنِّي أُنْسِيتُهَا وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فِي وِتْرٍ» قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَلَمَّا كَانَ اللَّيْلُ إِذَا السَّحَابُ أَمْثَالُ الْجِبَالِ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ وَسَقْفُهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَجَدَ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ الطِّينَ فِي أَرْنَبَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ

I asked Abu Saʿid, and he was a friend of mine, (about the Night of Qadr) and he said, "We practiced Iʿtikaf (seclusion in the mosque) in the middle third of the month of Ramadan with the Prophet ﷺ . In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet ﷺ came and addressed us and said, 'I was informed of (the date of the Night of Qadr) but I was caused to forget it; so search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water (as a sign). So, whoever was in Iʿtikaf with me should return to it with me (for another 10-day's period)', and we returned. At that time there was no sign of clouds in the sky but suddenly a cloud came and it rained till rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque which was made of date-palm leaf stalks. Then the prayer was established and I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in mud and water and I saw the traces of mud on his forehead." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2016)   

الكبرى للنسائي:٣٣٧٤أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ

When the twenty-first (night of Ramadan) came, he commanded us to keep on Itikaf and said, 'Whoever has performed Itikaf with me should continue it. I have been shown that tonight is the Night of Decree. So search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan. I saw myself prostrating in mud and water on that night. At the time the roof of the mosque was made of leaves of date-palm trees. At that time, while I was watching him, I saw mud and water on the forehead and the nose of the Prophet ﷺ till I saw the trace of mud and water on the forehead of the Prophet ﷺ and on the tip of his nose."

تَذَاكَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَقُمْتُ حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ أَلَا تَخْرُجُ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِخَمِيصَةٍ فَأَدْخَلَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَخَرَجْنَا فَقُلْتُ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ صَبِيحَةُ عِشْرِينَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ قَامَ فِينَا فَقَالَ مَنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَنَسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي وِتْرٍ وَإِنِّي أُرِيتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ وَثَارَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَسَقْفُهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْجُدُ فِي الطِّينِ وَالْمَاءِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ عَلَى أَرْنَبَتِهِ وَجَبْهَتِهِ

I asked Abu Saʿid, and he was a friend of mine, (about the Night of Qadr) and he said, "We practiced Iʿtikaf (seclusion in the mosque) in the middle third of the month of Ramadan with the Prophet ﷺ . In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet ﷺ came and addressed us and said, 'I was informed of (the date of the Night of Qadr) but I was caused to forget it; so search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water (as a sign). So, whoever was in Iʿtikaf with me should return to it with me (for another 10-day's period)', and we returned. At that time there was no sign of clouds in the sky but suddenly a cloud came and it rained till rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque which was made of date-palm leaf stalks. Then the prayer was established and I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in mud and water and I saw the traces of mud on his forehead."  

البخاري:٢٠١٦حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ وَكَانَ لِي صَدِيقًا فَقَالَ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَخَرَجَ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ فَخَطَبَنَا وَقَالَ إِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتُهَا أَوْ نُسِّيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فِي الْوَتْرِ وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَرَجَعْنَا وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَجَاءَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمَطَرَتْ حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَكَانَ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْجُدُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ فِي جَبْهَتِهِ

whose eye Messenger of Allah ﷺ had touched, that he had seen Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas offering one rakʿa only for the witr prayer.

[Machine] Abdullah ibn Tha'labah informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped his face and said that he saw Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas offering only one additional unit of prayer, without increasing it, until he stood up from the middle of the night.

أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَسَحَ وَجْهَهُ أَنَّهُ رَأَى سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ يُوتِرُ بِرَكْعَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ لَا يَزِيدُ عَلَيْهَاحَتَّى يَقُومَ مِنْ جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ

[Machine] And the Messenger of Allah had wiped his face during the time of the conquest (of Mecca), when he saw Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas. Sa'd had witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He used to perform one Rak'a after the Isha prayer, meaning Taraweeh, without exceeding it until he stood up from the middle of the night.

وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ مَسَحَ وَجْهَهُ زَمَنَ الْفَتْحِ أَنَّهُ رَأَى سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ كَانَ سَعْدٌ قَدْ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِرَكْعَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ يَعْنِي الْعَتَمَةَ لَا يَزِيدُ عَلَيْهَا حَتَّى يَقُومَ مِنْ جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ

I asked Ibn ʿUmar, "What is your opinion about the two rakʿat before the Fajr (compulsory) prayer, as to prolonging the recitation in them?" He said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to pray at night two rakʿat followed by two and so on, and end the prayer by one rakʿah witr. He used to offer two rakʿat before the Fajr prayer immediately after the Adhan." (Hammad, the sub-narrator said, "That meant (that he prayed) quickly.)"  

البخاري:٩٩٥حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ سِيرِينَ قَالَ

قُلْتُ لاِبْنِ عُمَرَ أَرَأَيْتَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ صَلاَةِ الْغَدَاةِ أُطِيلُ فِيهِمَا الْقِرَاءَةَ فَقَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى وَيُوتِرُ بِرَكْعَةٍ وَيُصَلِّي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ صَلاَةِ الْغَدَاةِ وَكَأَنَّ الأَذَانَ بِأُذُنَيْهِ قَالَ حَمَّادٌ أَىْ سُرْعَةً

I went to 'Abdullah b. 'Abbas and asked him about the Witr prayer, and the rest of the hadith is the same as recorded in this event. She (Hadrat 'A'isha) said: Who is that Hisham? I said: Son of 'Amir. She said: What a fine man 'Amir was! He died as a martyr in the Battle of Uhud.

نِعْمَ الْمَرْءُ كَانَ عَامِرٌ أُصِيبَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ

I asked Ibn 'Abbas about the Witr prayer. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: It is a rak'ah at the end of the night prayer.

I asked 'A'isha about the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ voluntary prayers, and she replied: Before the noon prayer, he used to pray four rak'ahs in my house; then would go out and lead the people in prayer; then come in and pray two rak'ahs. He would then lead the people in the sunset prayer; then come in and pray two rak'ahs. Then he would lead the people in the 'Isha' prayer, and enter my house and pray two rak'ahs. He would pray nine rak'ahs during the night, including Witr. At night he would pray for a long time standing and for a long time sitting, and when he recited the Holy Qur'an while standing, he would bow and prostrate himself from the standing position, and when he recited while sitting, he would bow and prostrate himself from the sitting position, and when it was dawn he would pray two rak'ahs.

When he recited the Qur'an while standing, he would bow and prostrate himself from the standing position, and when he recited while sitting, he would bow and prostrate himself from the sitting position, and when dawn came he prayed two rak'ahs, then he would come out and lead the people in the dawn prayer.

I asked A'ishah about the voluntary prayers offered by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She replied: Before the noon prayer he would pray four rak'ahs in my house, then go out and lead the people in prayer, then return to my house and pray two rak'ahs. He would lead the people in the sunset prayer, then return to my house and pray two rak'ahs. Then he would lead the people in the night prayer, and enter my house and pray two rak'ahs. He would pray nine rak'ahs during the night, including witr (prayer). At night he would pray for a long time standing and for a long time sitting. When he recited the Qur'an while standing, he would bow and prostrate himself from the standing position, and when he recited while sitting, he would bow and prostrate himself from the sitting position, and when dawn came he prayed two rak'ahs, then he would come out and lead the people in the dawn prayer. I asked Ibn 'Abbas about the Witr prayer. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: It is a rak'ah at the end of the night prayer. (Using translation from Muslim 753)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The night prayer should be performed in pairs of two, and the Witr prayer should be a single unit of prayer at the end of the night."

I asked 'A'isha about the Witr (prayer) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and made mention of a hadith, then I said: What did he do after having sexual intercourse? Did he take a bath before going to sleep or did he sleep before taking a bath? She said: He did all these. Some- times he took a bath and then slept, and sometimes he performed ablution only and went to sleep. I (the narrator) said: Praise be to Allah Who has made things easy (for human beings).

عَنْ وِتْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ كَانَ يَصْنَعُ فِي الْجَنَابَةِ أَكَانَ يَغْتَسِلُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنَامَ أَمْ يَنَامُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ قَالَتْ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ قَدْ كَانَ يَفْعَلُ رُبَّمَا اغْتَسَلَ فَنَامَ وَرُبَّمَا تَوَضَّأَ فَنَامَ قُلْتُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي جَعَلَ فِي الأَمْرِ سَعَةً

Anas reported; Bilal was commanded to pronounce Adhan in double pairs and IQAMAH in single pairs. Hammam added in his version; “except IQAMAH”.
