Quraysh used to fast on the day of Ashura in the pre-Islamic period. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded fasting it until Ramadan was made obligatory, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever wishes may fast it, and whoever wishes may break the fast."
Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashura' in the Pre-Islamic period, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ too, used to fast on that day. When he came to Medina, he fasted on that day and ordered others to fast, too. Later when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was prescribed, he gave up fasting on the day of 'Ashura' and it became optional for one to fast on it or not.
'Ashura' (i.e. the tenth of Muharram) was a day on which the tribe of Quraish used to fast in the prelslamic period of ignorance. The Prophet ﷺ also used to fast on this day. So when he migrated to Medina, he fasted on it and ordered (the Muslims) to fast on it. When the fasting of Ramadan was enjoined, it became optional for the people to fast or not to fast on the day of Ashura.
Fasting was observed on the day of 'Ashura' (i.e. 10th of Muharram) by the people of the Pre-lslamic Period. But when (the order of compulsory fasting) in the month of Ramadan was revealed, the Prophet said, "It is up to one to fast on it (i.e. day of 'Ashura') or not."
During the Pre-lslamic Period of ignorance the Quraish used to observe fasting on the day of 'Ashura', and the Prophet ﷺ himself used to observe fasting on it too. But when he came to Medina, he fasted on that day and ordered the Muslims to fast on it. When (the order of compulsory fasting in ) Ramadan was revealed, fasting in Ramadan became an obligation, and fasting on 'Ashura' was given up, and who ever wished to fast (on it) did so, and whoever did not wish to fast on it, did not fast.
He who wishes to observe this fast may do so, and he who wishes to abandon it may do so.
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported. In the pre-Islamic days fast was observed on the day of Ashura, but with the advent of Islam (its position was ascertained as that of a voluntary fast). Then he who wished to fast fasted, and he who liked to abandon it abandoned it.
He who wishes to fast should do so, and he who wishes to break it may do so.
'Ashura is one of the days of Allah, so he who wished should observe fast and he who wished otherwise should abandon it.
It is a day on which the people of pre-Islamic days observed fast. So he who liked to fast on this day should do so, and he who liked to abandon it should abandon it. 'Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) did not observe fast except when it coincided (with the days when he was in the habit of observing voluntary fasts during every month).
It is a day when the people in the pre-Islamic days need to observe fast, so he who wishes to observe fast should do so, and he who wishes to abandon it should do so.
The Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashurah in pre Islamic days. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would fast on it in pre-Islamic period. 'Ashurah was a day on which we used to fast in pre-Islamic days. When (fasting of) Ramadan was prescribed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: This is one of the days of Allah ; he who wishes may fast on it.
"Ashura was a day that the Quraish used to fast during Jahiliyyah, and the Messenger of Allah used to fast it. But when (the fast of) Ramadan became obligatory, the Ramadan was the required and Ashura was left. So whoever wanted to, he fasted it, and whoever wanted to, he left it."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This is the day of Ashura, which the Quraysh used to fast during the time of ignorance. So whoever among you wishes to fast on this day, let them fast, and whoever wishes to abandon it, let them abandon it." Ibn Umar used to observe this fast except when it coincided with his own fast.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ said, "The day of Ashura was a day the Quraysh used to fast in the jahiliyya, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used also to fast it during the jahiliyya. Then when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madina he fasted it and ordered that it be fasted. [AI] The day of Ashura used to be observed as a fast by the Quraysh in the pre-Islamic era, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also used to fast on this day during that time. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he continued to fast on this day and ordered others to also observe the fast. However, when the obligatory fast of Ramadan was established, it became the main priority, and the fast of Ashura was left as optional. So, whoever wishes to fast on this day may do so, and whoever wishes to leave it may do so.

(Using translation from Muslim 1126d)
[AI] The day of Ashura was a day that the Quraysh used to observe fasting during the time of ignorance. When Islam came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wishes to fast, he may do so, and whoever wishes to leave it, he may do so."
