9. Book of Ṣalāh (21/30)
“I asked ‘Aishah about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: ‘He prayed Witr at every part of the night, at the beginning, in the middle and at the end, when he died (he would perform it) just before dawn.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1185)
[Machine] I asked Aisha when the Prophet ﷺ used to perform the Sunnah prayer after Isha. She said, "When he heard the rooster crowing, and he used to persistently perform it even if it was little."
Make haste to observe the witr prayer before morning. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1436)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, "When do you pray the Witr prayer?" He said, "I pray Witr and then sleep." The Prophet said, "You have preferred determination." Then he asked Umar, "When do you pray the Witr prayer?" He said, "I sleep and then get up at night to pray Witr." The Prophet said, "You have chosen the action of the strong."
Ghudayf ibn al-Harith reported: I asked Aisha: Have you seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ washing (because of defilement) at the beginning of the night or at the end? She replied: Sometimes he would take a bath at the beginning of the night and sometimes at the end. Thereupon I exclaimed: Allah is most Great. All Praise be to Allah Who made this matter accommodative. I again asked her: What do you think, did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say the witr prayer (additional prayer after obligatory prayer at night) in the beginning of the night or at the end? She replied: Sometimes he would say the witr prayer at the beginning of the night and sometimes at the end. I exclaimed: Allah is most Great. All praise be to Allah Who made the matter accommodative. Again I asked her: What do you think, did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite the Qur'an (in the prayer) loudly or softly? She replied: Sometimes he would recite loudly and sometimes softly. I exclaimed: Allah is most Great. All praise be to Allah Who made the matter flexible. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 226)
"In the first rak'ah of witr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite: "GLorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High;" in the second; "Say: O you disbelievers!" and in the third; "Say: He is Allah, (the) One." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1700)
[Machine] My father visited me one day in Ramadan, and he stayed with us and broke his fast. Then he prayed with us that night and performed the Witr prayer. After that, he went down to his mosque and prayed with his companions. Then a man came forward and said, "Perform Witr with your companions, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'There should not be two Witr prayers in one night.'"
Ubayy bin Ka'b said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in Witr: "Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High;" and "Say: O you disbelievers!;' and 'Say: He is Allah, (the) One.' And when he said the salam, he would say: Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus (Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy) three times." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1729)
9.21 [Machine] The supererogatory acts.
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever prays twelve rak'ahs in a day apart from the obligatory prayers, Allah (SWT) will build for him, or there will be built for him, a house in Paradise.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1808)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Twelve rak'ahs, whoever prays them Allah will build for him a house in Paradise: four rak'ahs before Zuhr and two rak'ahs after Zuhr, two rak'ahs before Asr, two rak'ahs after Maghrib and two rak'ahs before Subh prayer." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1801)
The Prophet ﷺ said: May Allah show mercy to a man who prays four rak'ahs before the afternoon prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1271)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no obligatory prayer except that there are two voluntary units of prayer before it."
'A'isha reported that the Apostle ﷺ was not so much particular about observing supererogatory rak'ahs as in case of the two rak'ahs of the dawn prayer. (Using translation from Muslim 724f)
[Machine] "I have never seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rush towards any voluntary act of worship faster than he did towards the two Rak'ahs before Fajr prayer, nor towards any booty that he could take advantage of."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The two units of prayer before Fajr (dawn) prayer are more beloved to me than the whole world and everything in it."
“I watched the Prophet ﷺ for a month, and in the two Rak’ah before Fajr he used to recite: “Say: O you disbelievers!” [Al-Kafirun (109)] and “Say: Allah is One.” [Al- Ikhlas (112)] (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1149)
[Machine] A man stood and performed two units of the dawn prayer. In the first unit, he recited "Say, 'O disbelievers.'" When he finished the chapter, the Prophet ﷺ said, "This is a servant who knows his Lord." Then, in the second unit, he recited "Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One.'" When he finished the chapter, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is a servant who believes in his Lord." Talhah said, "I prefer to recite these two chapters in these two units of prayer."
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform two Rak’ah before Fajr, and he used to say: ‘The best two Surah to recite in the two Rak’ah of Fajr are: “Say: Allah is One” [Al-Ikhlas (112)] and “Say: O you disbelievers.” [Al-Kafirun (109)] (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1150)
It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that when the dawn illuminated, the Prophet ﷺ would pray two Rak’ah. (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1143)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was more particular about observing the supererogatory rak'ahs before the dawn prayer than about observing any of the other supererogatory prayers. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1254)
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ used to decrease the two units of the Fajr Salah."
[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allahﷺ used to offer the two raka'ahs of Fajr prayer, he would recite them so lightly that I would think he had not recited the opening chapter of the Quran (Al-Fatiha)."
The Prophet ﷺ would pray two rak'ahs before the dawn prayer lightly so much so that I would say: Did he recite Surah al-Fatihah in them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1255)
"When the Muaddhin fell silent after the Adhan for the beginning of Fajr, he would pray two brief rak'ahs, then he would lie down on his right side." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1762)
The Prophet ﷺ said: If any of you prays two rak'ahs before the dawn prayer, he should lie at his right side. Marwan ibn al-Hakam said to him: Is it not enough that one of us walks to the mosque until he lies at his right side? According to the version of Ubaydullah, he (AbuHurayrah) replied: No. This statement (of AbuHurayrah) reached Ibn Umar. He said: AbuHurayrah exceed limits on himself. He was asked: Do you look askance at what he says? He replied: No, but he dared and we showed cowardice. This (criticism of Ibn Umar) reached AbuHurayrah. He said: What is my sin if I remembered and they forgot? (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1261)
[Machine] The Fajr prayer was established, so I stood up to pray the two Rak'ahs. The Prophet ﷺ took my hand and said, "Do you want to pray Fajr as four Rak'ahs?"
The Messenger of Allah ﷺas saying: When the iqamah is pronounced for prayer, no prayer is valid except the obligatory prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1266)
