9. Book of Ṣalāh (3/30)
[Machine] About the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "There is no good for you in that. The prayer was established for the Prophet ﷺ , so one of us would go out to Al-Baqi to fulfill his needs, then he would come and perform ablution and find the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the first rak'ah of Dhuhr prayer."
[Machine] The translation is: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to prolong the first two units of the dawn and midday prayers. He said, 'We used to see him doing that to allow people to catch up.'"
It was narrated from Anas that the Prophet ﷺ used to make his prayer very brief but still complete when leading people. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 824)
[Machine] The translation of the given sentence in English is: "The Prophet ﷺ used to recite with us in the first two units of Dhuhr prayer, prolonging the recitation in the first unit and shortening it in the second."
We used to estimate how long the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in the noon and the afternoon prayer, and we estimated that he stood in the first two rak’ahs of the noon prayer as long as it takes to recite thirty verses (of the Qur’an), such as A-L-M Tanzil al-Sajdah. And we estimated that he stood in the last two rak’ahs half the time he stood in the first two rak’ahs. We estimated that he stood in the first two rak’ahs of the afternoon prayer as long as he did in the last two at noon; and we estimated that he stood in the last two rak’ahs of the afternoon prayer half the time he did in first two. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 804)
[Machine] My covenant with him is that he is a good prayer, so he called him and informed him. He said, "As for the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I have prayed with him by bowing in the first two units and omitting it in the last two units." That was your assumption, Abu Ishaq. So he sent someone with him to ask about him in Kufa. He roamed around in the mosques of Kufa and no one said anything about him except good until he reached the mosque of Bani Abis and there he found a man named Abu Sa'dah. He said, "O Allah, he was not a coward in secret missions, he never swore by equal measures, and he never compromised in judgment." Sa'd became angry and said, "O Allah, if he is lying, then prolong his life, increase his poverty, and afflict him with tribulations." Ibn Umayr claimed to have seen him with his eyebrows fallen over his eyes, impoverished and afflicted. He couldn't find anyone to ask, "How are you, Abu Sa'dah?" A venerable old man, afflicted, answered, "I have been responded to in the supplication of Sa'd."

"I said: 'I am going to watch how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prays.' So I watched him and he stood and said the takbir, and raised his hands until they were in the level with his ears, then he placed his right hand over his left hand, wrist and lower forearm. When he wanted to bow he raised his hands likewise. Then he prostrated and placed his hands in level with his ears. Then he sat up and placed his left leg under him; he put his left hand on his left thigh and knee, and he put the edge of his right elbow on his right thigh, then he held two of his fingers together and made a circle, and raised his forefinger, and I saw him moving it and supplicating with it." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 889)

And he did not do that when he prostrated. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 878)

[Machine] "I was a boy who did not understand my father's prayer, so Wa'il ibn 'Alqamah narrated to me from Wa'il ibn Hujr, who said, 'I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and when he entered the row, he would raise his hands and say takbir, then he would tie his lower garment, bringing his hand inside it, and hold his left hand with his right hand. When he wanted to bow, he would take out his hands and raise them and say takbir, then he would bow. When he raised his head from the bowing position, he would raise his hands and say takbir, then he would prostrate. Then he would place his face between his hands.' Ibn Juhaadah said, 'I mentioned that to al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan, and he said, 'That is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , those who did it, did it, and those who left it, left it.''

[Machine] I heard it from ten of the Prophet's companions, one of them being Abu Qatadah. He said, "I am the most knowledgeable among you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." They said, "Were you his closest companion or his most obedient follower?" He replied, "Yes." They said, "Then demonstrate." He said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood for prayer, he faced the Qibla (direction of prayer) and raised his hands until they were level with his shoulders. Then he said, 'Allah is the greatest.' When he bowed, he said 'Allah is the greatest' and raised his hands when bowing. Then he straightened his back, without raising or lowering his head, and raised his head, saying, 'Allah hears those who praise Him.' He raised his hands until they were level with his shoulders. Then he straightened himself and prostrated, placing the edges of his feet towards the Qibla. Then he raised his head, saying, 'Allah is the greatest.' Then, he placed his left foot under him and sat balanced until every bone returned to its place. Then, he said, 'Allah is the greatest.' When he stood up from the two prostrations, he said, 'Allah is the greatest,' and stood until his left foot was sent back and he sat with his left foot sideways and sitting on his buttocks, then he said, 'Allah is the greatest,' and then he performed the Salam (concluding the prayer).

[Machine] He was in a gathering where his father was present, and he was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ . In the gathering, there were Abu Huraira, Abu Usaid, and Abu Humaid Al-Saadi, who were from the Ansar. They were discussing about prayer, and then Abu Humaid said, "I will inform you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." They replied, "Show us." He stood up to pray, and they watched. He began by saying the Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and raising his hands to the level of his shoulders, then he raised his hands to the level of his ears before bowing, and he positioned his hands neither levelled with knees nor crossed but placed them on thighs. Then, he raised his head and said, "Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears whoever praises Him)," and raised his hands. Then, he said, "Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)," and prostrated, placing his forehead, nose, arms, and feet on the ground while his hands were prostrated as well. Then, he said the Takbeer, sat with one of his legs tucked and the other extended, and said the Takbeer again before prostrating with the other leg as well. Then, he said the Takbeer, stood up without tawarruk (resting on the buttocks on the ground while seated) and performed another rakah (unit of prayer). He repeated the same actions and then sat after the two rakahs, until he intended to stand up, he said the Takbeer, performed the two final rakahs, and after completing the prayer, he said the Tasleem to the right, "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah)," and to the left, "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah)." Al-Hasan bin Al-Hur narrated that Isa also mentioned in the gathering during the Tashahhud, that the Prophet ﷺ would place his left hand on his left thigh and his right hand on his right thigh, then he would point with one finger in supplication.

‘While he was among ten of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ including Abu Qatadah: “I heard Abu Humaid As-Sa’idi say: ‘I am the most knowledgeable of you concerning the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ They said: ‘Why? By Allah, you did not follow him more than we did, and you did not accompany him for longer.’ He said: ‘Yes I am.’ They said: ‘Show us.’ He said: ‘When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up for prayer, he would say the Takbir, then he would raise his hands parallel to his shoulders, and every part of his body would settle in place. Then he would recite, then he would raise his hands parallel to his shoulders and bow, placing his palms on his knees and supporting his weight on them. He neither lowered his head, nor raised it up, it was evenly balanced (between either extreme). Then he would say: “Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him); and he would raise his hands parallel with his shoulders, until every bone returned to its place. Then he would prostrate himself on the ground, keeping his arms away from his sides. Then he would raise his head and tuck his left foot under him and sit on it, and he would spread his toes when he prostrated.* Then he would prostrate, then say the Takbir and sit on his left foot, until every bone returned to its place. Then he would stand up and do the same in the next Rak’ah. Then when he stood up after two Rak’ah, he would raise his hands level with his shoulders as he did at the beginning of the prayer. Then he would offer the rest of his prayer in like manner until, when he did the prostration after which the Taslim comes, he would push one of his feet back and sit with his weight on his left side, Mutawarrikan.’** They said: ‘You have spoken the truth; this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform the prayer.’” * Meaning that he would plant them in such a way that they were facing the Qiblah. ** Mutawarrikan: i.e., sitting with the left foot brought forward so that one's buttocks are in direct contact with the ground. Then he said: (Allahu Akbar) "Allah is Most Great," then he bent his foot and sat and straightened up until all of his bones completely returned to their places. Then he got up. Then in the second Rak'ah he did the same as that, such that when he stood from the two prostrations, he sad the Takbir and raised his hands until they were at the level of his shoulders as he did when he opened the Salat. Then he did like that until it was the Rak'ah in which his Salat was to end, when he moved his left foot over and sat on his side (in the Mutawarrik postion). Then he said the Taslim.'" Abu Humaid, Abu Usaid, Sahl. B Sa’d and Muhammad b. Maslamah (once) got together and discussed how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to offer his prayer. Abu Humaid said: I am more informed than any of you regarding the prayer offered by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he mentioned a part of it, and said: He then bowed and placed his hands upon his knees as if he caught hold of them; and bent them, keeping (his arms) away from his sides. He them prostrated himself and placed his nose and forehead (on the ground); and kept his arms away from his side, and placed his palms (on the ground opposite his shoulders; he then raised his head that every bone returned to its proper place; (he then prostrated twice) until he finished this prostrations). Then he sat down and spread out his left foot, putting forward the front of his right foot towards the qiblah placing the palm of his right hand on his right knee, and the palm of his left hand on his left knee, and he pointed with his finger. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by Ibn al-Mubarak from Fulaih who heard ‘Abbas . Sahl narrating it; but I do not remember it. I think he made the mention of ‘Isa b. ‘Abd Allah who heard ‘Abbas b. Sahl saying: I accompanied Abu Humaid al-Sa’idi. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 734)

We came to the Prophet ﷺ and we were (a few) young men of approximately equal age and stayed with him for twenty nights. Then he thought that we were anxious for our families, and he asked us whom we had left behind to look after our families, and we told him. He was kindhearted and merciful, so he said, "Return to your families and teach them (religious knowledge) and order them (to do good deeds) and offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers, and when the stated time for the prayer becomes due, then one of you should pronounce its call (i.e. the Adhan), and the eldest of you should lead you in prayer. I am one among you who is more informed of the way the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed. They said: Why, By Allah, you did not follow him more than us, nor did you remain in his company longer than us? He said: Yes. They said: Then describe (how the Prophet prayed). He said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to pray, he raised his hands so as to bring them opposite his shoulders, and uttered the takbir (Allah is the most great), until every bone rested in its place properly: then re recited (some verses from the Quran); then he uttered the takbir (Allah is most great), raising his hands so as to bring them opposite his shoulders; then he bowed; placing the palms of his hands on his knees and keeping himself straight, neither raising nor lowering his head; then raised his head saying: “Allah listens to him who praise Him”; then raised his hands so as to bring them exactly opposite to his shoulders; then uttered: “Allah is most great”; then lowered himself to the ground (in prostration), keeping his arms away from his sides; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it, and opened the toes when he prostrated: then he uttered: “Allah is most great”; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it so that every bone returned to its place properly; then he did the same in the second (rak’ah). At the end of the two Rak’ahs he stood up and uttered the takbir (Allah is most great), raising his hands so as to bring them opposite to his shoulders; then he bowed, placing the palms of his hands on his knees and keeping himself straight, neither raising or lowering his head: then raised his head saying: “Allah listens to him who praises Him”; then raised his hands so as to bring them exactly opposite his shoulders; then uttered: “Allah is most great”; then lowered himself to the ground (in prostration), keeping his arms away from his sides; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it, and opened the toes when he prostrated himself; then he prostrated; then uttered: “Allah is most great”; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it so that every bone returned to its place properly; then he did the same in the second (rak’ah). At the end of two rak’ahs he stood up and uttered the takbir (Allah is most great), raising his hands so as to bring them opposite to his shoulders in the way he had uttered the Takbir (Allah is most great) at the beginning of the prayer; then he did that in the remainder of his prayer; and after prostration which if followed by the taslim (salutation) he out his left foot and sat on his left hip. They said: You have spoken the truth. This is how he(peace be upon him) used to pray. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 730)

The Prophet ﷺ used to raise his hands when he began to pray, when he wanted to bow, when he raised his head from bowing, and when he stood up after the first two rak'ahs, he would raise his hands likewise, level with his shoulders. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1182)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon us while the people were raising their hands. The narrator Zubair said: I think( they were raising the hands) during prayer. He (the prophet) said: What is the matter, I see you raising your hands as if they are the tails of restive horses! Maintain tranquility during prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1000)

[Machine] A man from the Ansar came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, there are certain things I wish to ask you about." The Prophet replied, "Sit." Then, a man from Thaqif came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, there are certain things I wish to ask you about." The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Ansari has preceded you." The Ansari man said, "He is a stranger and a stranger has rights. Begin with him." So, the Prophet turned towards the man and said, "If you want, I can answer the questions you came to ask, or if you prefer, you can ask me and I will inform you." The man replied, "O Messenger of Allah, rather answer me regarding the questions I came to ask." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You came to ask me about the acts of bowing, prostrating, praying, and fasting." The man said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I have not made any mistakes regarding these acts." The Prophet ﷺ said, "When you bow, place your hands on your knees, then separate your fingers. Remain in that position until each limb takes its appropriate posture. And when you prostrate, place your forehead firmly on the ground and do not peck like a rooster. Perform the prayer at the beginning and end of the day." The man asked, "O Prophet of Allah, what if I perform the prayer in between?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Then you will be considered as one who prays. And fast for thirteen, fourteen, or fifteen days in every month." The Thaqifi man then stood up and approached the Ansari man, saying, "If you want, I can inform you about what you came to ask, or if you prefer, you can ask me and I will inform you." The Ansari man said, "No, O Prophet of Allah, inform me about what I came to ask you." The Prophet said, "You came to inquire about the rights of the pilgrim when he leaves his home, stands at Arafat, throws stones, shaves or trims his hair, and completes the final circumambulation of the Kaaba." The man replied, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I have not made any mistakes regarding these matters." The Prophet ﷺ said, "When he leaves his home, every step taken by his mount will be recorded as a good deed or a sin. And when he stands at Arafat, Allah, the Exalted, descends to the lowest heaven and says, 'Look at my servants, how unkempt and dusty they are. Bear witness that I have forgiven them their sins, even if they were as numerous as the drops of rain and sand on the ground.' And when he throws the stones, no one knows its reward until the Day of Judgment. And when he shaves his head, for every hair that falls, a light will be created on the Day of Judgment. And when he completes the final circumambulation of the Kaaba, he will be free of his sins, just as he was on the day he was born."

[Machine] We arrived in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and prayed with him. He noticed a man who did not straighten his back properly during the bowing and prostration. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no prayer for one who does not straighten his back."

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘No prayer is acceptable in which a man does not settle his spine when bowing and when prostrating.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 870)
The Prophet ﷺ said: A man's prayer does not avail him unless he keeps his back steady when bowing and prostrating. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 855)
9.11 [Machine] Description of Prayer
[Machine] Hudhaifah saw a man at the gates of Kindah knocking, so he said, "How long have you been praying this prayer?" He replied, "For forty years." Hudhaifah said, "If I were to die, I would die upon a way other than the way that Muhammad ﷺ was upon. Indeed, the man lightens and completes the bowing and prostration."
[Machine] He heard Ali ibn Abi Talib say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited me from reciting while bowing and prostrating."
"The Prophet ﷺ drew back the curtain when the people were in rows behind Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: 'O people, there is nothing left of the features of Prophethood except a good dream that a Muslim sees or is seen by others for him.' Then he said: 'Verily, I have been forbidden from reciting the Qur'an when bowing or prostrating. As for bowing, glorify the Lord therein, and as for prostration, strive hard in supplication for it is more deserving of a response.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1045)
[Machine] "I prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and when he went into the bowing position, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great.' Then, when he prostrated, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.'"
[Machine] When it was revealed "So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord, the Great," he said, "Place it in your prostrations."
All Glorious, All Holy, Lord of the Angels and the Spirit. (Using translation from Muslim 487a)
"The Prophet ﷺ drew back the curtain when the people were in rows behind Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: 'O people, there is nothing left of the features of Prophethood except a good dream that a Muslim sees or is seen by others for him.' Then he said: 'Verily, I have been forbidden from reciting the Qur'an when bowing or prostrating.
ʿO Allah, to You I have bowed, in You I have believed and to You I have submitted. You are my Lord. My hearing my sight, my brain, my bones and my sinews submit to You. Whatever my feet carry is for Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 960)
[Machine] I heard that Anas ibn Malik described to us the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , saying, "He would stand and perform the prayer, and when he raised his head from the bowing position, we would say, 'He has forgotten the length of standing.'"
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would perform the rukoo' (bowing position), he would say, "O Allah, for you I have bowed and in You I believe, and to You I have submitted. My hearing, sight, mind, bones, and nerves all humble themselves for You." And when he would raise his head from the rukoo', he would say, "Allah hears the one who praises Him, our Lord, and to You belongs all praise, filling the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and filling whatever You will after that."
