8. Book of Purification
"Shall I not tell you of that by means of which Allah erases sins and raises (people) in status? Doing Wudu' properly [1] even when it is inconvenient, taking a lot of steps to the Masjid, and waiting for one Salah after another. That is the Ribat for you, that is the Ribat for you, that is the Ribat for you." [1] Isbagh Al-Wudu' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 143)
Messenger of Allah said: "Shall I tell you that for which Allah will wipe out your sins, and raise your ranks?" They said, "Of course Messenger of Allah!" He said: "Performing Wudu well in difficulty, and taking many steps to the Masajid, and waiting for Salat after Salat, That is the Ribat." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 51)
Messenger of Allah said: "When a Muslim, or believer, performs Wudu', washing his face, every evil that he looked at with his eyes leaves with the water - or with the last drop of water, or an expression similar to that - and when he washes his hands, every evil he did with his hands leaves with the water - or with the last drop of water - until he becomes free of sin." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2)
My father told me that Humran told him: ʿUthman ؓ did wudoo’ in al-Balat (a paved area in Madinah) then he said, i shall tell you a hadeeth that I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Were it not for a verse in the Book of Allah, I would not have told you it. I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ʿWhoever does wudoo’ and does it well, then goes in and prays, his sins between that prayer and the next will be forgiven, until he prays [the second prayer].” (Using translation from Aḥmad 400)
“O Abu Ayyub, we have missed out on Jihad this year, and we were told that whoever prays in the four mosques will be forgiven his sins.” He said: “O son of my brother, shall I not tell you of something easier than that? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever performs ablution as he has been commanded, and prays as he has been commanded, will be forgiven his previous (bad) deeds.’” He said: “(Did he not say it) like that, O ‘Uqbah?” He said: “Yes.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1396)
I heard Humran bin Aban tell Abu Burdah in the mosque of Basrah, when I was standing next to him, that he heard ʿUthman bin ʿAffan ؓ narrating from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: ʿWhoever does wudoo’ properly as enjoined by Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, the five prayers will be an expiation for whatever comes in between them.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 473)
I was with Uthman, and he called for ablution water and said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: When the time for a prescribed prayer comes, if any Muslim performs ablution well and offers his prayer with humility and bowing, it will be an expiation for his past sins, so long as he has not committed a major sin; and this applies for all times. (Using translation from Muslim 228)
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "The beauty of the people of Paradise reaches the same extent as the act of performing ablution."
“Peace be upon you, abode of believing people. We will join you soon, if Allah wills.” Then he said: “Would that we could see our brothers.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, are we not your brothers?” He said: “You are my Companions. My brothers are those who will come after me. I will reach the Cistern ahead of you.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, how will you recognize those of your nation who have not yet come?” He said: “If a man has a horse with a blaze on its forehead and white feet, don’t you think that he will recognize it among horses that are deep black in color?” They said: “Of course.” He said: “On the Day of Resurrection they will come with radiant faces, hands, and feet, because of the traces of ablution.” He said: “I will reach the Cistern ahead of you.” Then he said: “Men will be driven away from my Cistern just as stray camels are driven away. And I will call to them: ‘Come here!’ But it will be said: ‘They changed after you were gone, and they kept turning on their heels.’ So I will say: “Be off with you!” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4306)
[Machine] On the authority of Ibn Mas'ud, they said, "O Messenger of Allah, how do you know those whom you have not seen from your Ummah?" He said, "They will have bright foreheads and clean limbs from the traces of ablution."
“You will come to me with radiant faces, hands and feet from the traces of ablution. This is the characteristic sign of my nation which does not belong to anyone else.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4282)
He saw Abu Huraira perform ablution. He washed his face and washed his hands up to the arms. He then washed his feet and reached up to the shanks and then said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: My people would come with bright faces and bright hands and feet on account of the marks of ablution, so he who can increase the lustre of his forehead (and that of his hands and legs) should do so. (Using translation from Muslim 246b)
We served ourselves in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We tended our camels by turn. One day I had my turn to tend the camels, and I drove them in the afternoon. I found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressing the people. I heard him say: Anyone amongst you who performs ablution, and does it well, then he stands and offers two rak’ahs of prayer, concentrating on it with his heart and body, Paradise will be his lot by all means. I said: Ha-ha! How fine it is! A man in front of me said: The action (mentioned by the Prophet) earlier, O ‘Uqbah, is finer that this one. I looked at him and found him to be ‘Umar b. al-Khattab. I asked him: What is that, O Abu Hafs? He replied: He (the Prophet) had said before you came: If any one of you performs ablution, and does it well, and when he finishes the ablution, he utters the words : I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, He has no associate, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger, all the eight doors of Paradise will be opened for him; he may enter (through) any of them. Mu’awiyah said: Rabi’ah b. Yazid narrated this tradition to me from Abu Idris and the authority of ‘Uqbah b.’Amir. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 169)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever sleeps in a state of purity, an angel will spend the night with him, and the angel will not wake up but say, 'O Allah, forgive Your servant so and so, for he went to sleep in a state of purity.'"
[Machine] He heard Uqbah ibn Amer saying, "I do not say today regarding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what I have not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whoever intentionally lies about me should prepare himself a place in Hellfire.'"
[Machine] And I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "There is a person from my Ummah (nation) who stands up at night, seeking purification for himself. Upon you, there is a knot, and whenever he washes his hands, the knot loosens. And when he washes his face, the knot loosens. And when he wipes his head, the knot loosens. And when he washes his feet, the knot loosens. Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, says, 'Look at my servant, he purifies himself and does not ask me for what my servant has asked me. So he shall have what my servant has asked for.'"
