صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الظُّهْرَ وَالْعَصْرَ جَمِيعًا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي غَيْرِ خَوْفٍ وَلاَ سَفَرٍ قَالَ أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ فَسَأَلْتُ سَعِيدًا لِمَ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ كَمَا سَأَلْتَنِي فَقَالَ أَرَادَ أَنْ لاَ يُحْرِجَ أَحَدًا مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ
What prompted him to do this? He said: He wanted that his Ummah should not be put to (unnecessary) hardship.
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَمَعَ بَيْنَ الصَّلاَةِ فِي سَفْرَةٍ سَافَرَهَا فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ فَجَمَعَ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ قَالَ سَعِيدٌ فَقُلْتُ لاِبْنِ عَبَّاسٍ مَا حَمَلَهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ قَالَ أَرَادَ أَنْ لاَ يُحْرِجَ أُمَّتَهُ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined in the expedition to Tabuk the noon prayer with the afternoon prayer and the sunset prayer with the 'Isha' prayer. He (one of the narrators) said: What prompted him to do that? He (Mu'adh) replied that he (the Holy Prophet) wanted that his Ummah should not be put to (unnecessary) hardship.

Permissibility of combining prayers as a resident
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined Ẓuhr and ʿAsr ˹prayers˺ and the Maghrib and Isha ˹prayers˺ in Madinah without being in a state of fear, nor due to rain. It was asked of Ibn ʿAbbās: What did he intend by that?. He said: He wanted that his Ummah does not experience any hardship.
جَمَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَبَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ مِنْ غَيْرِ خَوْفٍ وَلاَ مَطَرٍ۔ قَالَ: فَقِيلَ لاِبْنِ عَبَّاسٍ مَا أَرَادَ بِذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: أَرَادَ أَنْ لاَ يُحْرِجَ أُمَّتَهُ۔
"Why?" He said: "So that there would not be any hardship on his Ummah."
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُصَلِّي بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَجْمَعُ بَيْنَ الصَّلاَتَيْنِ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ مِنْ غَيْرِ خَوْفٍ وَلاَ مَطَرٍ قِيلَ لَهُ لِمَ قَالَ لِئَلاَّ يَكُونَ عَلَى أُمَّتِهِ حَرَجٌ
[AI] The Prophet ﷺ gathered the people between Dhuhr and Asr prayers in Madinah, without being on a journey or fearing anything. I said, "O Abu Al-Abbas, why did he do that?" He said, "He wanted not to burden anyone from his ummah."
جَمَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي غَيْرِ سَفَرٍ وَلا خَوْفٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا الْعَبَّاسِ وَلِمَ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ أَرَادَ أَنْ لَا يُحْرِجَ أَحَدًا مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ

[AI] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered in a meal that he undertook during a battle between Dhuhr and Asr and Maghrib and Isha. So I asked him, what led him to do that? He said, he intended not to burden his nation."
«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَمَعَ فِي سَفْرَةٍ سَافَرَهَا وَذَلِكَ فِي غَزْوَةٍ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ» فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَمَا حَمَلَهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ أَرَادَ أَنْ لَا يُحْرِجَ أُمَّتَهُ
قَالَ جَمَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ وهُو مُقِيمٌ بِالْمَدِينَةِ مِنْ غَيْرِ خَوْفٍ لِكَيْ لا يُحْرِجَ أُمَّتَهُ
[AI] Al-Qa'nabi narrated both from Dawud bin Qays, who narrated from Salih, the freed slave of At-Taw'amah, that he heard Ibn Abbas saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined Dhuhr and Asr, and Maghrib and Isha in Al-Madinah without any fear or rain. I said to Ibn Abbas, "Why did he do that?" He said, "He wanted to make it easier for his ummah."
ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ كِلَاهُمَا عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ صَالِحٍ مَوْلَى التَّوْأَمَةِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ جَمَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ مِنْ غَيْرِ خَوْفٍ وَلَا مَطَرٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ لِمَ تُرَاهُ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ أَرَادَ التَّوْسِعَةَ عَلَى أُمَّتِهِ
[AI] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Dhuhr and Asr prayers together in the city of Madinah, without being on a journey or in fear." I asked Ibn Abbas, "Why did he do that?" He said, "He wanted to not inconvenience anyone from his nation."
«جَمَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ فِي غَيْرِ سَفَرٍ وَلَا خَوْفٍ» قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ لِمَ تَرَاهُ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ «أَرَادَ أَنْ لَا يُحْرِجَ أَحَدًا مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ»
[AI] The Prophet ﷺ combined the prayers of Dhuhr and Asr, and combined the prayers of Maghrib and Isha in Madinah, while he was stationary without fear or anything forcing him to do so. They asked, "Why did he do that, O Abu Abbas?" He replied, "He intended not to burden his Ummah."
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ «جَمَعَ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَهُوَ مُقِيمٌ عَلَى غَيْرِ خَوْفٍ وَلَا شَيْءٍ اضْطَرَّهُ إِلَى ذَلِكَ» فَقَالُوا فَلِمَ يَا أَبَا عَبَّاسٍ؟ قَالَ «أَرَادَ أَنْ لَا يُحْرِجَ أُمَّتَهُ»
[AI] "That the Prophet ﷺ combined Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha prayers in Madinah without any reason. Ibn Abbas was asked about the purpose of this, and he said, 'To make it easier for his Ummah.'"
«أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ جَمَعَ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ مِنْ غَيْرِ عِلَّةٍ» فَقِيلَ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ مَا أَرَادَ بِذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ «التَّوَسُّعَ عَلَى أُمَّتِهِ»
Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed in Medina seven (rak'ahs) and eight (rak'ahs), i. e. (be combined) the noon and afternoon prayers (eight rak'ahs) and the sunset and 'Isha' prayers (seven rak'ahs). (Using translation from Muslim 705f)

"عَنْ سَعيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: جَمَعَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْر بِالْمَدينَةِ في غَيْرِ سَفَرٍ وَلا خَوْفٍ، قَالَ: قُلتُ لابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: وَلِمَ تَرَاهُ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: أَرَادَ أَنْ لا يُحْرجُ أَحَدًا مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ".
