5. Ṣalāh of Fear (Khawf) (2/3)
[Machine] Huzaifah asked for water, so a man brought a silver vessel to him. He took it and threw it away, saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had forbidden them from drinking in gold and silver vessels, eating in them, wearing silk and brocade, and sitting on them. He said, "These things are for them in this worldly life, and for you in the Hereafter." Qasim narrated to us, and Fadl ibn Sahl narrated to me, from Yahya ibn Ishaq, from Jarir, from Ibn Abi Najih, a similar narration.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to do seven things and prohibited us from doing seven things. He commanded us to visit the sick, follow the funeral processions, spread peace, respond to the caller for help, say "May Allah have mercy on you" to a person who sneezes, support the oppressed, fulfill promises, and prohibited us from drinking from silver vessels because whoever drinks from them in this world will not drink from them in the hereafter. He also prohibited us from sealing things with gold, riding on silk saddles, wearing silk and wool together, wearing silk and brocade, and using yellow dye. Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us that Abu al-Walid narrated to us that Ali ibn Zatiya informed us that Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah informed him that Jarir narrated to him from Al-Shaibani, and he mentioned it with its meaning.
[Machine] He asked for permission to come to me, and under me there was a silk companion. So I commanded her and she was lifted. He said to him, "Yes, you are a good man, O Ibn Amir, if you are not one of those who said, 'Have you taken your good things in your worldly life?' (Surah Al-Ahqaf, 20). By Allah, if I were to lie on burning coals, it would be more beloved to me than lying on her. And Abu Nasr ibn Qatadah narrated to us that Abu Al-Fadl ibn Khameerawaih informed us, and Ahmad ibn Najdah narrated to us on the authority of Saeed ibn Mansur on the authority of Sufyan, and he mentioned it in a similar manner and added to it. He said, "O Abu Ishaq, indeed, half of what is upon you is silk and the other half is wool." He said, "Only my skin follows it, and we have narrated from Ali ibn Abi Talib that he was brought a saddle on which there was a blanket, but he refused to ride it."

5.16 [Machine] The License of what is Clothing from that in War, It was narrated by Urwah that he used to wear it in war, and by Ata bin Abi Rabah that he did not see any harm in it in war, and Al-Hasan Al-Basri disliked it.

[Machine] "And Abdullah ibn 'Awf complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about lice during a battle they were in. So the Messenger of Allah gave permission to both of them to wear silk shirts. Anas said, "I saw that each of them had a silk shirt on." This narration is recorded in Sahih from the hadith of Hammam ibn Yahya and others, from Qatadah."

[Machine] At Asma bint Abi Bakr's house, there was a patched cloak with embroidery. She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear this during times of war."

The Prophet ﷺ allowed ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf and Az-Zubair bin Al-ʿAwwam to wear silk. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2921)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ gave permission to Abdur Rahman bin Awf and Zubayr bin Al-Awwam to wear silk garments due to a certain skin condition they had.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ allowed or granted permission to Zubayr ibn Al-Awwam and Abdur Rahman ibn Awf to wear silk due to a skin condition they had.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave license to 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf and al-Zubair b. al-'Awwam to wear silk shirts during a journey because of an itch which they had. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4056)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ allowed 'Abdul Rahman ibn 'Awf and Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam to wear silk shirts while traveling due to an itch or pain they were experiencing.
[Machine] I wore it in front of someone who is better than you. This indicates its permissibility outside of war, and the conversation is disconnected.

'Umar wrote to us when we were in Adharba'ijan saying: 'Utba b. Farqad, this wealth is neither the result of your own labour nor the result of the labour of your father, nor the result of the labour of your mother, so feed Muslims at their own places as you feed (members of your family and yourselves at your own residence), and beware of the life of pleasure, and the dress of the polytheists and wearing of silk garments, for Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the wearing of silk garments, but only this much, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his. forefinger and middle finger and he joined. them (to indicate that only this much silk can be allowed in the dress of a man). 'Asim said also: This is what is recorded in the lette., (sent to us), and Zuhair raised his two fingers (to give an idea of the extent to which silk may be used). (Using translation from Muslim 2069c)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited silk except like this and he pointed with his two fingers that were next to the thumb and said, "So we understood that he meant clothing."
[Machine] Regarding the wearing of silk, except for the area of two fingers.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade wearing silk except in an area equivalent to the width of two or three fingers or four fingers.
[Machine] This man, whose name is Abdullah, the servant of Asma bint Abi Bakr, told me. Ata said to him, "Tell me." He spoke in front of Ata, saying, "Asma bint Abi Bakr sent me to Abdullah bin Umar, informing me that she had heard that you prohibit three things: fasting the entire month of Rajab, wearing a silk cloak, and having a fringe on clothing." Abdullah replied, "As for what you mentioned about fasting the entire month of Rajab, how can someone fast forever? As for the fringe on clothing, Umar told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.' So, I fear that the fringe on clothing might be considered part of wearing silk. As for the fringe dyed saffron yellow, this is Meethara, the son of Umar. I hope you can see it." Ata said, "Yes, I mean it." Abdullah went to Asma and informed her. Abdullah then brought me a cloak made of Tayaalisah fabric with a strip of Deebaj Khissrawani. The cloak had two broken pieces belonging to Muhammad bin Musa Khissrawani and their vulvas were sewn together. Asma said, "This is the cloak of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he used to wear. When he passed away, it remained with Aisha. When she passed away, I took hold of it, and now we wash it for the sick among us when they complain, and we seek healing through it."

Abdullah AbuUmar, client of Asma', daughter of AbuBakr, said: I saw Ibn Umar buying a Syrian garment in the market. When he saw that it had red warp, he returned it. I then came to Asma' and mentioned it to her. She said: Bring me, slave-girl, the mantle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She brought out a mantle of a course ornamented cloth, with its collar, sleeves, front, and back were hemmed with brocade. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4054)
[Machine] Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked wearing clothing made entirely of silk. As for silk trim or patches on clothing, there is no harm in that, according to the narration of Yahya. In the narration of Amr, he prohibited it, instead of disliking it, and he said that there is no harm in wearing silk trim or patches.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only prohibited wearing pure silk. As for a garment that has silk in its lining or in its thread, there is no harm in wearing it. This was narrated by Abu 'Asim from Ibn Juraij, and it was also said regarding this narration: As for a garment whose lining is silk but its exterior is not silk, it is not considered silk and there is no prohibition in it.
[Machine] I saw good things in Zaid ibn Thabit, a talented teacher.
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ said, 'I do not ride in a red carriage, nor do I wear garments made of silk, nor yellow clothes, nor a shirt made of embroidered silk. It is possible that what he intended by 'red' was the brightly colored clothes of the non-Arabs made from Dibaj or silk. And what he intended by a shirt made of embroidered silk was that the quantity of silk should be greater than the size of a hand-span, which he had given permission for. Or perhaps he intended to avoid it. And the jubbah (long coat) that Asma bint Abi Bakr brought out, it is possible that he used to wear it in battle. For we have narrated that from her in another hadith. And Allah knows best."
[Machine] And that the attire that was woven for the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was worth one thousand dirhams or more. The Sheikh said that the attire they wore was two pieces, an Izar and a Ridah, except that it was made of Qazz (a type of fabric).

[Machine] I saw a man in Bukhara riding a white mule with a black turban on his head. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ clothed me with it." The wording of the Hadith of Uthman is 6092, and Abu Bakr Al-Farisi narrated to me from Abu Ishaq Al-Asbahani, who narrated from Abu Ahmad bin Fares, who narrated from Muhammad bin Ismail Al-Bukhari, who narrated to me from Makhlad, who narrated from Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah bin Saad Al-Dastaki Al-Razi, who mentioned it in a similar manner. Abdul Rahman said, "We saw him, Ibn Hazem Al-Sulami, say: 'I do not see that he joined the Prophet ﷺ, or this is another sheikh.'"

Then 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanm al-Ash'ari said: 'I swear by Allah, another time, Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik narrated to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: 'There will be people among my Ummah who will consider fornication, silk, alcohol, and musical instruments as permissible.' In the narration of Hisham, it was mentioned: 'There will also be people who will descend to the side of a mountain, whereupon it will start to roll down along with the flags that are carried by them. Then a seeker of a need will come to them and they will say: 'Come back to us tomorrow.' So he will spend the night along with them, and he will also place the flag on them, transforming them into monkeys and swines until the Day of Resurrection. Duhaime said that others will also be transformed among them."

This was mentioned in Sahih from another point of view, narrated by Qatadah without the phrase that Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah narrated it before the prohibition of silk and it is closer to being correct than the narration of whoever narrated it. Buhari said: Sa'id narrated it from Qatadah from Anas that Ukaydirah Dumatah gave a gift to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from the polytheists, except that its Matn was not mentioned."

Messenger of Allah I saw 'Utarid standing in the market with a silk garment; would that you buy and wear it for (receiving) the delegations of Arabs when they visit you? I (the narrator) said: I think he ('Umar) also said: You may wear it on Friday (also). Thereupon, Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) said: He who wears silk in this world has no share in the Hereafter. Later on when these silk garments were presented to Allah's Massenger ﷺ he presented one silk garment to 'Umar and presented one also to Usama b. Zaid and gave one to 'Ali b. Abu 'Talib. saying: Tear them and make head coverings for your ladies. 'Umar came carrying his garment and said: Messenger of Allah, you have sent it to me, whereas you had said yesterday about the (silk) garment of Utarid what you had to say. He (the Holy Prophet) said: I have not sent it to you that you wear it, but I have sent It to you so that you may derive benefit out of it; and Usama (donned) the garment (presented to him) and appeared to be brisk, whereupon Allah's Apostle ﷺ looked at him with a look by which he perceived that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not like what he had done. He said: Messenger of Allah. why is it that you look at me like this. whereas you yourself presented it to me? He said: I never sent it to you to wear it, but I sent It to you so that you may tear it and make out head covering for your ladies. (Using translation from Muslim 2068c)

[Machine] Utbah and his brother Shaybah, and Utbah's son Walid, emerged and said, "Who will challenge [the Muslims]?" So a group of youth from the Ansar (helpers) stepped forward. Utbah said, "We do not desire these [youth], but we want to challenge our cousins, the sons of 'Abdul-Muttalib." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Stand up, Hamzah. Stand up, 'Ubaidah. Stand up, Ali." So Hamzah stood up to face Utbah, 'Ubaidah stood up to face Shaybah, and Ali stood up to face Walid. Hamzah killed Utbah, Ali killed Walid, 'Ubaidah killed Shaybah, and Shaybah struck 'Ubaidah's leg and cut it. Hamzah and Ali came to 'Ubaidah's rescue until he died from his injuries. In another narration from Ibn Ishaq's companions in this story, it is mentioned that 'Ubaidah challenged Utbah, and Hamzah challenged Shaybah, and Ali challenged Walid ibn Utbah.

He the Prophet ﷺ, forbade me that I should wear my ring in this (forefinger) or in that near it. 'Asim (one of the narrators in the chain of transmitters) said: He did not remember which of the two (fingers) he pointed out; and he forbade to wear Qassi material (silk garments), and to sit on the silk saddle cloth, and he said: As regards Qassi, it is a variegated garment which was brought from Egypt and Syria which had figures upon it, and as regards Mayathir, it is something which women prepared for their husbands as red cloths for their saddles. (Using translation from Muslim 2078d)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ forbade me from wearing qassiyyah and meetharah. Abu Burdah said, "We asked Ali, 'What is qassiyyah?' He said, 'It is a type of garment that we received from Sham (Syria) or Misr (Egypt) that had silk and designs similar to the markings on a zebra. And meetharah is something that women used to make for their husbands, resembling pieces of felt that they would place on their saddles.' Al-Bukhari mentioned it in his Targhib. Abu Ubayd said, 'Meetharah was made from the ships of the non-Arabs, made from dyed or silk materials.' And others have said, 'Meetharah is the skins of wild animals.'"
