[Machine] Jarir in the conversation or before it, when he died, they found traces on his back of what he used to carry the sack at night for the poor people.  

جَرِيرٌ فِي الْحَدِيثِ أَوْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ إِنَّهُ حِينَ مَاتَ وَجَدُوا بِظَهْرِهِ آثَارًا مِمَّا كَانَ يَحْمِلُ الْجُرْبَ بِاللَّيْلِ لِلْمَسَاكِينِ  

[Machine] Al-Zuhri said, "I have not seen a Hashemite better than Ali ibn al-Hussein, may Allah's blessings be upon them all."  

قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ لَمْ أَرَ هَاشِمِيًّا أَفْضَلَ مِنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ أَجْمَعِينَ  

[Machine] Ali ibn Husayn, when someone approached him for charity, he would accept it and then give it to them.  

أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ حُسَيْنٍ كَانَ إِذَا نَاوَلَ السَّائِلَ الصَّدَقَةَ قَبَّلَهُ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ  

[Machine] Whoever laughs a sincere laugh from knowledge.  

مَنْ ضَحِكَ ضَحِكَةً مَجَّ مَجَّةً مِنَ الْعِلْمِ  

[Machine] I saw Ali ibn al-Hussein handling the poor person with his hand.  

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ يُنَاوِلُ الْمِسْكِينَ بِيَدِهِ  

[Machine] He used to carry bread in the socks and say, "Indeed, giving charity at night extinguishes the anger of the Lord."  

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَحْمِلُ الْجِرَابَ فِيهِ الْخُبْزُ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّ صَدَقَةَ اللَّيْلِ تُطْفِئُ غَضَبَ الرَّبِّ ﷻ  

[Machine] There were people from the city who used to live without knowing where their livelihood came from. When Ali ibn Al-Hussein died, may Allah have mercy on him, they lost what they used to receive at night.  

كَانَ نَاسٌ مِنَ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ يَعِيشُونَ مَا يَدْرُونَ مِنْ أَيْنَ كَانَ مَعَاشُهُمْ فَلَمَّا مَاتَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ فَقَدُوا مَا كَانُوا يُؤْتَوْنَ بِهِ بِاللَّيْلِ  

[Machine] Abd Al-A'la At-Taymi said to me, "Indeed, anyone who is given knowledge that does not bring them to tears, it is as if they were not given any knowledge that benefits them."  

قَالَ لِيَ عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى التَّيْمِيُّ إِنَّ مَنْ أُوتِيَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ مَا لَا يُبْكِيهِ لَخَلِيقٌ أَنْ لَا يَكُونَ أُوتِيَ مِنْهُ عِلْمًا يَنْفَعُهُ  

[Machine] Abdul Al-A'la Al-Taimi used to say in his prostration, "O Lord, increase our humility to You as Your enemies increase in enmity towards us. And do not turn our faces towards the fire after prostration to You."  

كَانَ عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى التَّيْمِيُّ يَقُولُ فِي سُجُودِهِ رَبِّ زِدْنَا لَكَ خُشُوعًا كَمَا زَادَ أَعْدَاؤُكَ نُفُورًا وَلَا تَكُبَّنَّ وُجُوهَنَا فِي النَّارِ مِنْ بَعْدِ السُّجُودِ لَكَ  

[Machine] Indeed, the martyr enters paradise while wielding his sword.  

إِنَّ الشَّهِيدَ يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ وَهُوَ شَاهِرٌ سَيْفَهُ  

[Machine] Anxiety and sadness increase good deeds and sin and transgression increase bad deeds.  

الْهَمُّ [138] وَالْحَزَنُ يَزِيدُ فِي الْحَسَنَاتِ وَالْإِثْمُ وَالْبَطَرُ يَزِيدُ فِي السَّيِّئَاتِ  

[Machine] Kurz's daughter entered upon him and found him praying in a masjid that was filled with bricks. He was wearing a garment that reached his ankles, and he would recite the Quran three times during the day and night. He had a small stick in the mihrab that he would lean on when he became tired. Muhammad bin Al-Fudayl narrated that his father said, "Whenever Kurz would exit, he would enjoin good, and they would strike him until he would pass out."  

دَخَلَتْ عَلَى كُرْزٍ بِنْتُهُ فَإِذَا عِنْدَهُ مِصْلَاةٌ قَدْ مَلَأَهَا تِبْنًا وَبَسَطَ عَلَيْهَا كِسَاءً مِنْ طُولِ الْقِيَامِ وَكَانَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَلَهُ عُودٌ فِي الْمِحْرَابِ يَعْتَمِدُ عَلَيْهِ إِذَا نَعِسَ قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْفُضَيْلِ عَنْهُ أَوْ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ وَكَانَ كُرْزٌ إِذَا خَرَجَ أَمَرَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ؛ فَيَضْرِبُونَهُ حَتَّى يُغْشَى عَلَيْهِ  

[Machine] I carried a cherry on a trip, and whenever it passed by a clean spot, it would stop and pray.  

صَحِبْتُ كُرْزًا فِي سَفَرٍ فَكَانَ إِذَا مَرَّ بِبُقْعَةٍ نَظِيفَةٍ نَزَلَ فَصَلَّى  

[Machine] "To make a mistake is human."  

أَنْ تُخْطِئَ الْأَصَابِعُ  

[Machine] The one who knows the good from the evil is not the knowledgeable person, but rather the one who knows the good and follows it, and knows the evil and avoids it.  

لَيْسَ الْعَالِمُ الَّذِي يَعْرِفُ الْخَيْرَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ إِنَّمَا الْعَالِمُ الَّذِي يَعْرِفُ الْخَيْرَ فَيَتَّبِعُهُ وَيَعْرِفُ الشَّرَّ فَيَجْتَنِبُهُ  

[Machine] The angels said, "Peace be upon him. Glorified is the One who saved this servant from Satan. Oh, woe to him, how did he escape?"  

قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي نَجَّى هَذَا الْعَبْدَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ يَا وَيْحَهُ كَيْفَ نَجَا؟  

[Machine] From Mansour regarding the saying of Allah ﷻ: "And do not forget your portion of worldly life" [Al-Qasas 77], he said, it is not a temporary part of worldly possessions, but rather your portion is your lifespan in which you prioritize for your Hereafter.  

عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ ﷻ {وَلَا تَنْسَ نَصِيبَكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا} [القصص 77] قَالَ لَيْسَ هُوَ عَرَضٌ مِنْ عَرَضِ الدُّنْيَا وَلَكِنْ نَصِيبُكَ عُمْرُكَ أَنْ تُقَدِّمَ فِيهِ لِآخِرَتِكَ  

[Machine] The teacher of goodness.  

{وَجَعَلَنِي مُبَارَكًا أَيْنَمَا كُنْتُ} قَالَ مُعَلِّمَ الْخَيْرِ  

[Machine] Indeed, the believer is diligent.  

إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنُ بِالتَّحَامُلِ  

[Machine] Written in the Tablet before Me, says God: "Verily, I am God; there is no god but I: so worship Me and offer prayer for My remembrance. I am the Most Merciful. My Mercy encompasses everything. My Mercy preceded My Wrath. My Forgiveness preceded My Punishment. I have allowed whoever brings a good deed, even if it is as small as a grain of mustard seed, to enter Paradise."  

مَكْتُوبٌ فِي اللَّوْحِ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ اللَّهِ ﷻ إِنِّي أَنَا اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنَا الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ أَرْحَمُ وَأَتَرَحَّمُ سَبَقَتْ رَحْمَتِي غَضَبِي وَعَفْوِي عُقُوبَتِي وَأَذِنْتُ لِمَنْ جَاءَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ مِنْ ثَلَاثِينَ وَثَلَاثِمِائَةَ أَنْ أُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ  

[Machine] I heard Yazid ibn Tamim say, "Whoever is not restrained by the Quran and death, then the mountains colliding in front of him will not restrain him."  

سَمِعْتُ يَزِيدَ بْنَ تَمِيمٍ يَقُولُ مَنْ لَمْ يَرْدَعْهُ الْقُرْآنُ وَالْمَوْتُ ثُمَّ [139] تَنَاطَحَتِ الْجِبَالُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ لَمْ يُرْدَعْ  

[Machine] "Solomon, if he wanted the world, he would marry us."  

سُلَيْمَانُ أَمَا لَوْ أَرَادَ الدُّنْيَا لَزَوَّجَنَا  

[Machine] We do not know anyone who has seen the fair-eyed maidens except in dreams, except for Abu Makhrama. For he entered one day for his need and saw Hurra' in her dome and on her bed. When he saw her, he turned his face away from her. She said to him, "O Abu Makhrama, I am your wife and this is the wife of so-and-so." He turned to his companions and informed them, so they wrote their wills, but no one wrote his will except he was martyred.  

لَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا رَأَى حُورَ الْعِينِ عَيَانًا إِلَّا فِي الْمَنَامِ إِلَّا مَا كَانَ مِنْ أَبِي مَخْرَمَةَ فَإِنَّهُ دَخَلَ يَوْمًا لِحَاجَتِهِ فَرَأَى حَوْرَاءَ فِي قُبَّتِهَا وَعَلَى سَرِيرِهَا فَلَمَّا رَآهَا صَرَفَ وَجْهَهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ إِلَيَّ يَا أَبَا مَخْرَمَةَ؛ فَإِنِّي أَنَا زَوْجَتُكَ وَهَذِهِ زَوْجَةُ فُلَانٍ قَالَ فانْصَرَفَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَأَخْبَرَهُمْ فَكَتَبُوا وَصَايَاهُمْ فَلَمْ يَكْتُبْ أَحَدٌ وَصِيَّتَهُ إِلَّا اسْتُشْهِدَ  

[Machine] "Let him straighten himself out."  

أَنْ يَسْتَقِيمَ لِي  

'Utba b. Ghazwan delivered us a sermon and he praised Allah and lauded Him, then said: Now coming to the point, verily the world has been given the news of its end and that too quite early. Nothing would be left out of it but only water left in the utensil which its owner leaves, and you are going to shift to an abode which knows no end, and you should shift with the good before you, for we have been told that a stone would be thrown at one side of the Hell and it would go down even for seventy years but would not be able to reach its bottom. By Allah, it would be fully packed. Do you find it something strange, and it has been mentioned that there yawns a distance which one would be able to cover in forty years from one end to another of Paradise, and a day would come when it would be fully packed and you must be knowing that I was the seventh amongst seven who had been with Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we had nothing to eat but the leaves of the tree until the corners of the mouth were injured. We found a sheet which we tore in two and divided between myself and Sa'd b. Malik. I made the lower garment with halt of it and so did Sa'd make the lower garment with half of it and today there is none amongst us who has not become the governor of a city from amongst the cities (of the Islamic Commonwealth) and I seek refuge with Allah that I should consider myself great whereas I am insignificant in the eye of Allah. Prophethood does not remain for ever and its impact fades with the result that it changes eventually into kingship, and you would soon come to know and experience those rulers who would come after us and see (how far they are from religion). أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ الدُّنْيَا قَدْ آذَنَتْ بِصَرْمٍ وَوَلَّتْ حَذَّاءَ وَإِنَّ مَا بَقِيَ مِنْهَا صَبَابَةٌ كَصَبَابَةِ الْإِنَاءِ يَتَصَابُّهَا أَحَدُكُمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ مُنْتَقِلُونَ إِلَى دَارٍ لَا زَوَالَ لَهَا فَانْتَقِلُوا مِنْهَا بِخَيْرِ مَا يَحْضُرُ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ الْحَجَرَ يَهْوَى مِنْ شَفِيرِ جَهَنَّمَ فَمَا يَبْلُغُ لَهَا قَعْرًا سَبْعِينَ عَامًا وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَتُمْلَأَنَّ أَفَعَجِبْتُمْ وَلَقَدْ ذُكِرَ لِيَ أَنَّ مَا بَيِنَ مَصِرَاعَيِ الْجَنَّةِ مَسِيرَةُ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً وَلَيَأْتِيَنَّ عَلَيْهِ يَوْمٌ وَهُوَ كَظِيظُ الزِّحَامِ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتَنِي وَأَنَا سَابِعُ سَبْعَةٍ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا لَنَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا وَرَقُ الشَّجَرِ حَتَّى قَرِحَتْ مِنْهُ أَشْدَاقُنَا وَلَقَدْ الْتَقَطْتُ بُرْدَةً فَشَقَقْتُهَا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ سَعْدٍ فَاتَّزَرْتُ بِنِصْفِهَا وَاتَّزَرَ سَعْدٌ بِنِصْفِهَا فَمَا مِنَّا الْيَوْمَ حَيٌّ إِلَّا أَصْبَحَ أَمِيرَ مِصْرٍ مِنَ الْأَمْصَارِ فَأَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ عَظِيمًا فِي نَفْسِي صَغِيرًا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ وَأَنَّهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ نُبُوَّةٌ إِلَّا تَنَاسَخَتْ حَتَّى تَكُونَ عَاقِبَتُهَا مُلْكًا وَسَتُبْلَوْنَ وَتُجَرِّبُونَ الْأُمَرَاءَ بَعْدَنَا  

[Machine] You are today in a known time, distorting time has passed and its distortion is a known time that is coming.  

إِنَّكُمُ الْيَوْمَ فِي زَمَانٍ مَعْرُوفُهُ مُنْكَرٌ زَمَانٌ قَدْ مَضَى وَمُنْكَرُهُ مَعْرُوفٌ زَمَانٌ يَأْتِي  

[Machine] Adi ibn Hatim said, "There is never a time for prayer, without me longing for it."  

قَالَ عَدِيُّ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ مَا دَخَلَ وَقْتُ صَلَاةٍ إِلَّا وَأَنَا أَشْتَاقُ إِلَيْهَا  

[Machine] Sa'id ibn Shayban narrated from someone that they saw 'Adi ibn Hatim tearing the stale bread.  

عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ شَيْبَانَ عَمَّنْ [140] رَأَى عَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ يَفُتُّ الْخُبْزَ الْمُمَلَّ  

[Machine] A man from the immigrants looked at a man who was praying his prayer lighter, so he admonished him and said, "I remembered a lost village of mine." He responded, "The greatest of lost things, have you misplaced."  

نَظَرَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ يُصَلِّي أَخَفَّ صَلَاتَهُ فَعَاتَبَهُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي ذَكَرْتُ ضَيْعَةً لِي قَالَ أَكْبَرُ الضَّيْعَةِ أَضَعْتَ  

[Machine] And Allah said, "O Allah, indeed we are Your servants and in Your path we fight Your enemy. O Allah, grant us rain from which we may perform ablution and drink, so when we perform ablution, no one else has a share in it except us. So, we set out for a little while, then when we reached the water that the sky had stopped raining upon, we performed ablution from it and filled our containers. I left my container in its place, and I wanted to see if it would be answered or not. So, we set out for a little while, then I said to my companions, 'I forgot my container, so I came back to that place, and it was as if no water had touched it at all.' Then, we set out until we reached a house, and the sea was between us and them. I said, 'O Clement, O Ali, O Mighty, indeed we are Your servants and in Your path we fight Your enemy. O Allah, make a way for us to reach them.' So, the sea swallowed us, and we submerged to the point that our whale blubber became cooked well-done. Then, we came out to them, and when we returned, he suffered from intense abdominal pain and died. So, we sought water to wash him, but we did not find it. So, we wrapped him in his clothes and buried him. Then, we set off not very far, and suddenly we found ourselves in abundant water. So, one of us said to another, 'If we go back and extract him, then we wash him, then we return him?' So, we sought him, but we did not find him. Then, a man from the people said, 'I heard him saying, O Ali, O Wise, O Mighty, hide my death from them or say something else, and do not expose me to anyone's nakedness.' So, we returned him and left him."  

وَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا عَبِيدُكَ وَفِي سَبِيلِكَ نُقَاتِلُ عُدُوَّكَ اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا نَتَوَضَّأُ مِنْهُ وَنَشْرَبُ فَإِذَا تَوَضَّأْنَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لِأَحَدٍ فِيهِ نَصِيبٌ غَيْرَنَا فَسِرْنَا قَلِيلًا فَإِذَا نَحْنُ بِمَاءٍ حِينَ أَقْلَعَتْ عَنْهُ السَّمَاءُ فَتَوَضَّأْنَا مِنْهُ وَتَزَوَّدْنَا وَمَلَئْتُ أَدَوَاتِي وَتَرَكْتُهَا مَكَانَهَا حَتَّى أَنْظُرَ هَلِ اسْتُجِيبَ لَهُ أَمْ لَا؟ فَسِرْنَا قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ قُلْتُ لِأَصْحَابِي نَسِيتُ أَدَوَاتِي فَجِئْتُ إِلَى ذَلِكَ الْمَكَانِ فَكَأَنَّهُ لَمْ يُصِبْ مَاءً قَطُّ ثُمَّ سِرْنَا حَتَّى أَتَيْنَا دَارِينَ وَالْبَحْرُ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ فَقَالَ يَا حَلِيمُ يَا عَلِيُّ يَا عَظِيمُ إِنَّا عَبِيدُكَ وَفِي سَبِيلِكَ نُقَاتِلُ عَدُوَّكَ اللَّهُمَّ فَاجْعَلْ لَنَا إِلَيْهِمْ سَبِيلًا فَتَقَحَّمَ بِنَا الْبَحْرُ فَخُضْنَا مَا بَلَغَ لَبُودَنَا فَخَرَجْنَا إِلَيْهِمْ فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا أَخَذَهُ وَجَعُ الْبَطْنِ فَمَاتَ فَطَلَبْنَا مَاءً نُغَسِّلُهُ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَلَفَفْنَاهُ فِي ثِيَابِهِ وَدَفَنَّاهُ فَسِرْنَا غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ فَإِذَا نَحْنُ بِمَاءٍ كَثِيرٍ فَقَالَ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ لَوْ رَجَعْنَا فَاسْتَخْرَجْنَاهُ ثُمَّ غَسَّلْنَاهُ فَرَجَعْنَا فَطَلَبْنَاهُ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ يَا عَلِيُّ يَا حَكِيمُ يَا عَظِيمُ اخْفِ عَلَيْهِمْ مَوْتِي أوْ كَلِمَةً غَيْرَهَا وَلَا تُطْلِعْ عَلَى عَوْرَتِي أَحَدًا فَرَجَّعْنَاهُ وَتَرَكْنَاهُ  

[Machine] That his mother, Athamah, covered her vision, and then her son entered upon her one day after he had prayed. And she said, "Did you pray, my son?" He said, "Yes." So Athamah said, "Why are you not attending to your place, turning to it? Cry during the prayer at its time, if one day you cry. And cry during the recitation of the Quran, if one day you recite it. You used to recite it with contemplation and tears flowing from your eyes. So today, do not recite it except when you have the same attitude. My longing for you has no limit, as I have not lived my whole life."  

أَنَّ أُمَّهُ عَثَّامَةَ كُفَّ بَصَرُهَا فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا ابْنُهَا يَوْمًا وَقَدْ صَلَّى فَقَالَتْ أَصَلَّيْتُمْ أَيْ بُنَيَّ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَقَالَتْ عَثَّامُ مَالَكِ لَاهِيَهْ حَلَّتْ بِدَارِكِ دَاهِيَهْ ابْكِي الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا إِنْ كُنْتِ يَوْمًا بَاكِيَهْ وَابْكِ الْقُرَانَ إِذَا تُلِي قَدْ كُنْتِ يَوْمًا تَالِيَهْ تَتْلِينَهُ بِتَفَكُّرٍ وَدُمُوعُ عَيْنِكِ جَارِيَهْ فَالْيَوْمَ لَا تَتْلِينَهُ إِلَّا وَعِنْدَكَ تَالِيَهْ لَهْفِي عَلَيْكِ صَبَابَةً مَا عِشْتُ طُولَ حَيَاتِيَهْ  

[Machine] We do not know anyone who fulfilled their promise to walk to Mecca except for 'Athamah bint Bilal ibn Abi Darada, for she fulfilled her promise and walked to Mecca and spent five hundred dinars.  

مَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا حَنَثَ فِي مَشْيٍ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فَوَفَّى بِهِ إِلَّا عَثَّامَةَ أُمَّ بِلَالِ بْنِ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ فَإِنَّهَا حَنَثَتْ فَمَشَتْ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فَأَنْفَقَتْ خَمْسَمِائَةَ دِينَارٍ  

[Machine] Al-Hasan bin Ali, may ﷺ , would observe his portion of staying up for worship from the beginning of the night. And Al-Husain, may ﷺ , would observe his portion of staying up for worship from the end of the night.  

كَانَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ يَأْخُذُ بِنَصِيبِهِ مِنَ الْقِيَامِ مِنْ أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ وَكَانَ الْحُسَيْنُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ يَأْخُذُهُ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ  

[Machine] Indeed, He does not like the arrogant. [Surah An-Nahl 23]  

{إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْتَكْبِرِينَ} [النحل 23]  

[Machine] "It is the product of the night."  

إِنَّهَا نَاشِئَةُ اللَّيْلِ  

[Machine] We followed the works, and we did not find a more effective work in seeking the hereafter than asceticism in this worldly life.  

تَابَعْنَا الْأَعْمَالَ فَلَمْ نَجِدْ عَمَلًا أَبْلَغَ فِي طَلَبِ الْآخِرَةِ مِنَ الزَّهَادَةِ فِي الدُّنْيَا  

[Machine] I have met seventy people from the people of distinction, none of whom had a waistcloth.  

أَدْرَكْتُ سَبْعِينَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الصُّفَّةِ مَا لِأَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ إِزَارٌ  

[Machine] I said to Ali, meaning his son, "If you helped us for a lifetime, he took a sack and went to the market to carry it." Then a man came to me and informed me, so I went to him and I returned it to him and said, "O my son, I do not want all of this or I do not want this."  

قُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ يَعْنِي ابْنَهُ لَوْ أَعَنْتَنَا عَلَى دَهْرِنَا فَأَخَذَ قُفَّةً وَمَضَى إِلَى السُّوقِ لِيَحْمِلَ فَأَتَانِي رَجُلٌ فَأَعْلَمَنِي فَمَضَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَرَدَدْتُهُ وَقُلْتُ يَا بُنَيَّ لَسْتُ أُرِيدُ هَذَا أَوْ لَمْ أُرِدْ هَذَا كُلَّهُ  

[Machine] Ali used to carry a load on his shoulders for Fudhayl. The food he carried was not enough, so he sat by the well. Fudhayl came to them and said, "What are you doing to Ali? We had a sheep in Kufa that ate a small amount of fodder for some princes or kings or those who resemble them, and I didn't give her milk afterwards." They said, "We didn't know, O Abu Ali, that it was for you."  

أنَّ عَلِيًّا كَانَ يَحْمِلُ عَلَى أَبَاعِرَ كَانَتْ لِفُضَيْلٍ فَنَقَصَ الطَّعَامُ الَّذِي حَمَلَهُ فَجَلَسَ عِنْدَ الْكَرِيِّ فَأَتَى الْفُضَيْلُ إِلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ تَفْعَلُونَ هَذَا بِعَلِيٍّ لَقَدْ كَانَتْ لَنَا شَاةٌ بِالْكُوفَةِ فَأَكَلَتْ شَيْئًا يَسِيرًا مِنْ عَلَفٍ لِبَعْضِ الْأُمَرَاءِ أَوِ الْمُلُوكِ أَوْ مَنْ يُشْبِهُهُمْ فَمَا شَرِبْتُ لَهَا لَبَنًا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالُوا لَمْ نَعْلَمْ يَا أَبَا عَلِيٍّ أَنَّهُ إِلَيْكَ  

[Machine] About Fudayl, it is said that they bought barley with a dinar, which was expensive in price. Umm Ali said to Fudayl, "The sustenance for each person is two bites, so he used to take one and give the other as charity. Until when he was about to be struck by severe hunger or suffered some of it, Fudayl said, and he did not return seeking what he had given away when hunger struck him, until we became blind."  

عَنْ فُضَيْلٍ أَنَّهُمُ اشْتَرَوْا شَعِيرًا بِدِينَارٍ كَانَ ذَلِكَ فِي غَلَاءٍ مِنَ السِّعْرِ فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ عَلِيٍّ لِفُضَيْلٍ قَوِّتْهُ لِكُلِّ إِنْسَانٍ قُرْصَيْنِ فَكَانَ يَأْخُذُ وَاحِدًا وَيَتَصَدَّقُ بِالْآخَرِ حَتَّى إِذَا كَادَ أَنْ يُصِيبَهُ الْخَوَاءُ أَوْ أَصَابَهُ بَعْضُ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فُضَيْلٌ فَمَا رَجَعَ يُرِيدُ مَا ذَهَبَ عِنْدَمَا أَصَابَهُ مِنَ الْجُوعِ حَتَّى اعْتَمَمْنَا  

[Machine] I may have seen a person in need, so I showed him mercy. I saw him one day and approached him, and I found that he had the amount of a fistful of money. He intended to buy something with it, so I did not inquire about anything and left him. May Allah have mercy on him.  

رُبَّمَا رَأَيْتُ فُضَيْلًا فَأَرْحَمُهُ؛ رَأَيْتُهُ يَوْمًا وَأَتَيْتُهُ فَإِذَا مَعَهُ قَدْرُ الْقَبْضَةِ مِنْ نَوَى وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ بَقَّالًا فِيَشْتَرِي بِهَا شَيْئًا فَمَا سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ وَانْصَرَفْتُ عَنْهُ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ  

[Machine] If I had known you were here, I wouldn't have spoken about it until Allah willed.  

لَوْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّكَ هَاهُنَا مَاحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ فَمَا أَفَاقَ إِلَّا بَعْدَمَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ  

[Machine] It is said, "There will come a time when among people, there is nothing less than a close companion or a halal dirham, or a deed performed according to the Sunnah."  

يُقَالُ «يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ أَقَلُّ شَيْءٍ فِي ذَلِكَ الزَّمَانِ أَخٌ مُؤْنِسٌ أَوْ دِرْهَمٌ مِنْ حَلَالٍ أَوْ عَمَلٌ فِي سُنَّةٍ»  

[Machine] I saw Muawiyah on the pulpit in Damascus giving a sermon, and he was wearing a patched shirt.  

رَأَيْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ بِدِمَشْقَ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ وَعَلَيْهِ قَمِيصٌ مَرْقُوعٌ  

[Machine] "And Allah says to him, 'Do you know, O My servant?' So he says, 'Yes, O Lord, I know.' He says, 'Have you acknowledged it?' He says, 'Yes, indeed, O Lord, I have acknowledged it.' So Allah says to him, 'Verily, I have accepted it from you.' So he falls down prostrate before Allah. Then Allah says to him, 'Raise your head, O son of Adam, and count it in your book.' So he passes by the sin and his face turns black, and his heart fears from it. So Allah says to him, 'Do you know, O My servant?' He says, 'Yes, O Lord, I know.' He says, 'Indeed, I have forgiven it for you.' So his good deeds continue to be accepted and he prostrates for his sins to be forgiven, and the creation does not see from him except prostration. It is said to the creation, 'Congratulations to this servant who has never disobeyed Allah.' He says, 'And they do not know what he has encountered between him and Allah of what he has been through.'"  

فَيَقُولُ اللَّهُ ﷻ لَهُ تَعْرِفُ يَا عَبْدِي فَيَقُولُ نَعَمْ أَيْ رَبِّ أَعْرِفُ قَالَ فَيَقُولُ فَإِنِّي تَقَبَّلْتُهَا مِنْكَ قَالَ فَيَخِرُّ لِلَّهِ سَاجِدًا قَالَ فَيَقُولُ ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ وَعُدْ فِي كِتَابِكَ قَالَ فَيَمُرُّ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ فَيَسْوَدُّ وَجْهُهُ وَيَوْجَلُ مِنْهَا قَلْبُهُ فَيَقُولُ اللَّهُ ﷻ أَتَعْرِفُ يَا عَبْدِي؟ قَالَ فَيَقُولُ نَعَمْ يَا رَبِّ أَعْرِفُ قَالَ فَيَقُولُ إِنِّي قَدْ غَفَرْتُهَا لَكَ قَالَ فَلَا يَزَالُ حَسَنَةٌ تُقْبَلُ فَيَسْجُدُ وَسَيِّئَةٌ تُغْفَرُ فَيَسْجُدُ وَلَا يَرَى الْخَلَائِقُ مِنْهُ إِلَّا السُّجُودَ قَالَ حَتَّى يُنَادِيَ الْخَلَائِقُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا طُوبَى لِهَذَا الْعَبْدِ لَمْ يَعْصِ اللَّهَ قَطُّ قَالَ وَلَا يَدْرُونَ مَا قَدْ لَقِيَ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ اللَّهِ مِمَّا قَدْ وَقَفَهُ عَلَيْهِ  

[Machine] Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah will record one good deed as ten on account of another good deed to seven hundred times to many more times. When someone intends to perform Hajj and is told that it is expensive that he or she cannot afford it, then donates a sum of money to help someone who will perform Hajj, Allah will multiply the reward even more." (Al-Bukhari 5036)  

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ حَدِيثٌ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ يَكْتُبُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِ الْحَسَنَةَ الْوَاحِدَةَ أَلْفَ أَلْفِ حَسَنَةٍ» قَالَ فَحَجَجْتُ ذَلِكَ الْعَامَ وَلَمْ أَكُنْ أُرِيدُ الْحَجَّ فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ فَقُلْتُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ قُلْتَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ يَكْتُبُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِ بِالْحَسَنَةِ الْوَاحِدَةِ أَلْفَ أَلْفِ حَسَنَةٍ قَالَ لَيْسَ هَكَذَا قُلْتُ وَلَمْ يَحْفَظْ الَّذِي حَدَّثَكَ عَنِّي قَالَ فَقُلْتُ فَكَيْفَ قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ أَلْفَيْ أَلْفِ حَسَنَةٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَوَ لَسْتُمْ تَجِدُونَ هَذَا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ ﷻ؟ قُلْتُ وَأَيْنَ؟ قَالَ {مَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً} [البقرة 245] وَالْكَثِيرُ مِنَ اللَّهِ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ أَلْفَيْ أَلْفٍ وَأَلْفَيْ أَلْفِ حَسَنَةٍ  

[Machine] In Basra, there was a judge who was called Abu Salim. He mentioned a story from his knowledge and said, "In a mosque of some elders, Yunus said, and I sat with him. He said that it reached him that someone was praying and came across this verse, 'Couches lined with brocade' [Ar-Rahman 54]. So, he said, 'O Lord, these couches, what about the evident signs?' He was then called out without knowing who called him, 'The evident signs are the satisfaction of Allah.' And he used to narrate in Persian."  

كَانَ بِالْبَصْرَةِ قَاضٍ يُكَنَّى أَبَا سَالِمٍ فَذَكَرَ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ قَالَ فَكَانَ فِي مَسْجِدِ بَعْضِ [143] الْأَشْيَاخِ قَالَ يُونُسُ وَقَدْ جَلَسْتُ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ فَبَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُصَلِّي فَأَتَى عَلَى هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {فُرُشٌ بَطَائِنُهَا مِنْ إِسِتَبْرَقٍ} [الرحمن 54] فَقَالَ يَا رَبِّ هَذِهِ الْبَطَائِنُ فَكَيْفَ الظَّوَاهِرُ فَنُودِيَ وَلَا يَدْرِي مَنْ نَادَاهُ الظَّوَاهِرُ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ وَكَانَ يَقُصُّ بِالْفَارِسِيَّةِ  

[Machine] Why does the man embrace his brother? Embrace your brother with an open face, if you have something good with you, share it.  

لِمَاذَا يَلْقَى الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ بِالِانْقِبَاضِ أَلْقَ أَخَاكَ بِوَجْهٍ طَلْقٍ فَإِنْ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ خَيْرٌ فَأَنْحِلْ بِهِ  

[Machine] He witnessed the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , in al-Baqi' and said, "Whoever gives charity today with a sincere intention, I will testify for him on the Day of Judgment in front of Allah." A man came and said, "By Allah, there is no one in al-Baqi' blacker in complexion, shorter in stature, and more cross-eyed than him. By Allah, there is nothing in al-Baqi' better than her." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , asked, "Is this your charity?" The man replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "I wish he had given it to me, for it is better than him." The man repeated his statement three times, and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "You have lied. Rather, it is better than you and her." He repeated this three times, then the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "The one who strives hard and refrains from worldly pleasures has indeed achieved success. The one who strives hard and refrains from worldly pleasures has indeed achieved success."  

أَنَّهُ شَهِدَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالْبَقِيعِ فَقَالَ «مَنْ يَتَصَدَّقُ الْيَوْمَ بِصَدَقَةٍ أَشْهَدُ لَهُ بِهَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ» قَالَ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا بِالْبَقِيعِ رَجُلٌ أَشَدُّ سَوَادَ وَجْهٍ مِنْهُ وَلَا أَقْصَرُ قَامَةً وَلَا أَذَمُّ فِي عَيْنٍ مِنْهُ بِنَاقَةٍ لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا بِالْبَقِيعِ شَيْءٌ أَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةُ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَلَمَزَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ لِيَتَصَدَّقَ بِهَا وَاللَّهِ لَهِيَ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ قَالَ فَسَمِعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَلِمَتَهُ فَقَالَ «كَذَبْتَ بَلْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ وَمِنْهَا كَذَبْتَ بَلْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ وَمِنْهَا» ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُزْهِدُ الْمُجْهِدُ قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُزْهِدُ الْمُجْهِدُ»  

[Machine] That I should stand until my back complains, and it was a labor that would make a cow give birth, so I wouldn't kneel until it reaches the spider.  

أَنْ أَقُومَ حَتَّى يَشْتَكِيَ صُلْبِي وَكَانَ طَلْقٌ يَفْتَحُ الْبَقَرَةَ فَلَا يَرْكَعُ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْعَنْكَبُوتَ
