Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina and the people used to pay in advance the price of fruits to be delivered within one or two years. (The sub-narrator is in doubt whether it was one to two years or two to three years.) The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever pays money in advance for dates (to be delivered later) should pay it for known specified weight and measure (of the dates).

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَالنَّاسُ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي الثَّمَرِ الْعَامَ وَالْعَامَيْنِ أَوْ قَالَ عَامَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثَةً شَكَّ إِسْمَاعِيلُ فَقَالَ مَنْ سَلَّفَ فِي تَمْرٍ فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ

The Prophet ﷺ came to Medina and the people used to pay in advance the price of dates to be delivered within two or three years. He said (to them), "Whoever pays in advance the price of a thing to be delivered later should pay it for a specified measure at specified weight for a specified period."

قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ بِالتَّمْرِ السَّنَتَيْنِ وَالثَّلاَثَ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فِي شَىْءٍ فَفِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ

as above, saying, "He should pay the price in advance for a specified measure and for a specified period."

وَقَالَ فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ

The Prophet ﷺ came (to Medina) and he told the people (regarding the payment of money in advance that they should pay it) for a known specified measure and a known specified weight and a known specified period.

سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ يَقُولُ قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَقَالَ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ

The Prophet ﷺ came to Medina and the people used to pay in advance the prices of fruits to be delivered within two to three years. The Prophet ﷺ said (to them), "Buy fruits by paying their prices in advance on condition that the fruits are to be delivered to you according to a fixed specified measure within a fixed specified period." Ibn Najih said, " ... by specified measure and specified weight."

قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي الثِّمَارِ السَّنَتَيْنِ وَالثَّلاَثَ فَقَالَ أَسْلِفُوا فِي الثِّمَارِ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ وَقَالَ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ

Those who pay in advance for anything must do so for a specified weight and for a definite time.

قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي الثِّمَارِ السَّنَةَ وَالسَّنَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فِي تَمْرٍ فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ

He who makes an advance payment should not make advance payment except for a specified measure and weight (and for a specified period).

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ يُسْلِفُونَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فَلاَ يُسْلِفْ إِلاَّ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina, they were paying one, two and three years in advance for fruits, so he said: Those who pay in advance for anything, must do for a specified measure and weight with a specified time fixed.

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي التَّمْرِ السَّنَةَ وَالسَّنَتَيْنِ وَالثَّلاَثَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فِي تَمْرٍ فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ

"When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Al-Madinah, they were paying in advance for fruits. So he said: 'Whoever pays in advance, then let him pay in advance for known measurements (of dates), and known weights for a specified period of time.'" He said: There are narrations on this topic from Ibn Abi Awfa and 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abza.

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي الثَّمَرِ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى وَعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى

"I heard Ibn 'Abbas say: 'When the Prophet came (to al-Madinah), they used to pay in advance for dates, two or three years in advance. He forbade them that and said: 'whoever pays in advance for dates, let him pay for a known amount or a known weight, to be delivered at a known time'''

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي التَّمْرِ السَّنَتَيْنِ وَالثَّلاَثَ فَنَهَاهُمْ وَقَالَ مَنْ أَسْلَفَ سَلَفًا فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ

"When the Prophet ﷺ came (to Al-Madinah), they used to pay in advance for dates, two or three years in advance. He said: 'Whoever pays in advance for dates, let him pay for a known amount or a known weight, to be delivered at a known time.’”

قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي التَّمْرِ السَّنَتَيْنِ وَالثَّلاَثَ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فِي تَمْرٍ فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina while they were exchanging fruits for two or three years. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Exchange fruits based on a known measure and weight." Sufyan used to mention it for a while "until Abdullah ibn Kathir doubted it."

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي الثِّمَارِ فِي سَنَتَيْنِ وَثَلَاثٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَسْلِِفُوا فِي الثِّمَارِ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ» وَقَدْ كَانَ سُفْيَانُ يَذْكُرُهُ زَمَانًا «إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ ثُمَّ شَكَّكَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, and the people were borrowing dates for one or two years or he said, for two years and three years. So he said, "Whoever borrows dates, let him borrow a known measure and a known weight."

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَالنَّاسُ يُسَلِّفُونَ فِي التَّمْرِ الْعَامَ وَالْعَامَيْنِ أَوْ قَالَ عَامَيْنِ وَالثَّلاثَةَ فَقَالَ مَنْ سَلَّفَ فِي تَمْرٍ فَلْيُسَلِّفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived while they were borrowing. He said, "Whoever borrows should not borrow except with a known measure and weight."

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فَلا يُسْلِفْ إِلا فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina and the people were lending to one another. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "Whoever lends should not lend except in a known measure and weight." Abu Al-Minhaal, whose name is Abdul Rahman bin Mut'im.

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَالنَّاسُ يُسْلِفُونَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فَلَا يُسْلِفْ إِلَّا فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ» أَبُو الْمِنْهَالِ هَذَا اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُطْعِمٍ

Those who pay in advance for anything must do so for a specified weight and for a definite time. (Using translation from Muslim 1604a)

قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي الثَّمَرِ السَّنَةَ وَالسَّنَتَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَ فَقَالَ «مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ»

[AI] Al-Qa'ani narrated that Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah reported from Ibn Abi Najih, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Kathir, on the authority of Abu al-Minhal, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, who said: The Prophet ﷺ arrived in Medina and they were dealing with deferred payment of fruits for two or three years. So he said, "Whoever gives a loan, let him specify a known measure and a known weight and a known term."

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْمِنْهَالِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي الثَّمَرِ السَّنَتَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَ فَقَالَ «مَنْ أَسْلَفَ فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ»

"I heard Ibn 'Abbas say: 'When the Prophet came (to al-Madinah), they used to pay in advance for dates, two or three years in advance. قَالًًًَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَََََ وَهُمْ يُسْلِفُونَ فِي التَّمْرِ السَّنَتَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَ فَنَهَاهُمْ وَقَالَ «مَنْ أَسْلَفًَ سَلَفًا فَلْيُسْلِفْ فِي كَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ وَوَزْنٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ»

"أَنْبَأَنا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِىِّ قَالَ: قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُمْ يسلفونَ فِى الثِّمَار، فَقَالَ: مَنْ سَلَّف فِى ثَمَرَةٍ فَهُوَ رِبًا، إِلَّا بِكَيْلٍ مَعْلُومٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مَعْلُومٍ".
