[Machine] He said to Ali, "Indeed, people have become engrossed in what they hear. So, if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted you with a trust, then tell us about it." He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not entrust me with a trust that he did not entrust to the people, except that he had a document in the sheath of his sword." He said, "Then, in it [the document], is that Ibrahim sanctified Mecca, and I sanctify Medina. Indeed, whatever is between its two sanctities is sacred. No tree is to be cut from it except for the feeding of a camel, and no weapon is to be carried in it for fighting. Whoever introduces something new or shelters someone who does, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people. His expenditure shall not be accepted, and his testimony shall not be accepted. The believers are equal in their blood. The most honorable of them is he who fulfills his responsibility. They are allies against whoever is not one of them. A believer is not to be killed in retaliation for a disbeliever, nor is one bound by a covenant to be killed in his covenant."
I set out with al-Ashtar to go to ‘Ali ؓ . We said: Did the Prophet of Allah ﷺ tell you something that he did not tell to all the people? He said: No, except what is in this document. He [the narrator] said: A document in the sheath of this sword. In it was said: “The believers are equal in respect of blood and they are one against their enemies; protection given even by the least among them is to be honoured, but no believer is to be killed (in retaliation) for a disbeliever and no one who has a covenant is to be killed during the covenant. Whoever commits an offence or gives refuge to an offender, upon him be the curse of Allah, the angels and all the people.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 993)

[Machine] We hired two men from the pagans named Humayn to kill them for me, but I said, "Do not kill them until they start with me." So I told them to close the door behind him and I left until I arrived at the hiding place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , but I did not find him, and I found Fatimah and said to her, "Did you not see what Ibn Abi did to me? He did such and such to me, and she was harder on me than her husband." She said, "You keep away from the pagans." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared to me, covered in dust. He said, "Welcome, O sister." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you not see what Ibn Abi did to me? I hired Humayn from the pagans to kill them, and he intended to kill them." He said, "He did not do that. We have rewarded those whom you have rewarded and protected those whom you have protected." Then he said to Fatimah, "Pour water for me to perform ablution," so I poured water for him, and he performed ablution. Then he prayed eight units of prayer in the same garment, while he tucked one edge of it in and left the other edge free."

Abu Hurairah said, While we were in the mosque, the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ came out and said “Come on to the Jews. So we went out with him and came to them”. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ stood up, called them and said “If you, the community of Jews accept Islam you will be safe”. They said “You have given the message Abu Al Qasim”. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ said “Accept Islam you will be safe”. They said “You have given the message Abu Al Qasim”. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ said “that I intended”. He then said the third time “Know that the land belongs to Allaah and His Apostle and I intend to deport you from this land. So, if any of you has property (he cannot take it away), he must sell it, otherwise know that the land belongs to Allaah and His Apostle ﷺ.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3003)

Whoever gives his oath of allegiance to a ruler and gives a sincere promise, let him obey him as much as he can, and if another comes and challenges him, let them strike the neck (i.e., kill) the second one.’” He the narrator said: “I raised my head among the people and said: 'I adjure you by Allah, did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He ('Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As) pointed with his hand to his ears and said: I heard it directly from him and memorized it.'” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3956)

The Prophet ﷺ said: Fighting is of two kinds: The one who seeks Allah's favour, obeys the leader, gives the property he values, treats his associates gently and avoids doing mischief, will have the reward for all the time whether he is asleep or awake; but the one who fights in a boasting spirit, for the sake of display and to gain a reputation, who disobeys the leader and does mischief in the earth will not return credit or without blame.
