malik:51-10Mālik > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd

Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey, he saw an evil jinn seeking him with a torch of fire. Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned, he saw him. Jibril said to him, 'Shall I teach you some words to say? When you say them, his torch will be put out and will fall from him.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Yes, indeed.' Jibril said, 'Say, 'I seek refuge with the Noble Face of Allah and with the complete words of Allah which neither the good person nor the corrupt can exceed, from the evil of what descends from the sky and the evil of what ascends in it, and from the evil of what is created in the earth and the evil of what comes out of it, and from the trials of the night and day, and from the visitations of the night and day, except for one that knocks with good, O Merciful!" "' Audhu bi wajhi'llahi' l-karim wa bi kalimati'llahi't-tammati. Allati la yujawazu hunna barra wa la fajir, min sharri ma yanzil min as-sama, wa sharri ma yaruju fiha, wa sham ma dhara' fi'l-ard, wa sharri ma yakhruju minha, wa min fitani'l-layli wa'n-nahar, wa min tawariqi'l-layli wa'n-nahar illa tariqan yatruq bikhayr ya Rahman!

[Machine] I said to Abdurrahman ibn Khanbash Al-Tamimi, who was an old man, "Did you meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He replied, "Yes." I asked, "What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do on the night when the devils were almost upon him?" He said, "Indeed, the devils gathered around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that night, from valleys and passes, and among them was a devil holding a lit torch, intending to burn the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then Jibril descended to him and said, 'O Muhammad, say.' The Prophet asked, 'What should I say?' Jibril replied, 'Say: I seek refuge in the complete words of Allah from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil that He has descended from the sky, and from the evil that ascends into it, and from the evil of the trials of the day and the night, and from the evil of every knock, except a knock that brings good. O Most Merciful.' So their fire was extinguished, and Allah, blessed and exalted is He, defeated them."

[Machine] A man asked Abdullah ibn Khunbash, "How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ deal with the devils when they approached him?" He said, "The devils came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the valleys and descended upon him from the mountains. Among them was a devil with a flame of fire, intending to burn the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He became terrified and frightened. Ja'far ibn Abi Talib said, "I think he was about to say something." Ja'far continued, "But then he hesitated." He said, "Then Jibril came and said, 'O Muhammad, say the following: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which no righteous or wicked person can exceed, from the evil of what He has created, originated, and brought into existence. I seek refuge from the evil that descends from the sky, and from the evil that rises therein. I seek refuge from the evil that is scattered on the earth, and from the evil that emerges from it. I seek refuge from the evil of the trials of the night and day, and from the evil of every creature except for a creature that comes with goodness. O Most Merciful! So, the fire of the devils was extinguished and Allah defeated them."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the night of the jinn, while he was with Jibril and I was with him, the Prophet ﷺ began reciting and the Afrit drew closer and got closer. Then Jibril said to the Prophet ﷺ , "Shall I teach you some words that if you say them, the Afrit will fall on his face and his flame will go out?" Say, "I seek refuge in the noble face of Allah and His perfect words from the evil of what descends from the sky and what ascends therein, and from the evil of what is spread in the earth and what comes out of it, and from the trials of the night and the day, and from the evil of those who blow on knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies, O Rahman (the Most Merciful), then the Afrit fell on his face and his flame went out." Malik Ibn Anas went against him and Al-Harith Ibn Maskeen recited it in a different way. Ibn Al-Qasim reported to me that Malik narrated to us from Yahya Ibn Sa'id, who said, "I was taken on a journey with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and I saw a jinn seeking him with a torch of fire. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ turned, he would see him. So Jibril ﷺ said to him and recited the hadith."
