“The son of one of the daughters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was dying. She sent for him, asking him to come to her, and he sent word to her, saying: ‘To Allah belongs what He has taken and to Him belongs what He has given. Everything has an appointed time with Him, so be patient and seek reward.’ But she sent for him again, adjuring him to come. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up, and I got up with him, as did Mu’adh bin Jabal, Ubayy bin Ka’b and ‘Ubadah bin Samit. When we entered they handed the child to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and his soul was rattling in his chest.” I think he was that it was like a water skin. “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept, and ‘Ubadah bin Samit said to him: ‘What is this, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘It is compassion which Allah has created in the son of Adam. Allah only shows mercy to those of His slaves who are compassionate.’”

The daughter of the Prophet ﷺ sent (a messenger) to the Prophet ﷺ requesting him to come as her child was dying (or was gasping), but the Prophet ﷺ returned the messenger and told him to convey his greeting to her and say: "Whatever Allah takes is for Him and whatever He gives, is for Him, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world) and so she should be patient and hope for Allah's reward." She again sent for him, swearing that he should come. The Prophet ﷺ got up, and so did Saʿd bin 'Ubada, Muʿadh bin Jabal, Ubai bin Kaʿb, Zaid bin Thabit and some other men. The child was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ while his breath was disturbed in his chest (the sub-narrator thinks that Usama added: ) as if it was a leather water-skin. On that the eyes of the Prophet ﷺ started shedding tears. Saʿd said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What is this?" He replied, "It is mercy which Allah has lodged in the hearts of His slaves, and Allah is merciful only to those of His slaves who are merciful (to others).

Once a daughter of Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a message to Messenger of Allah ﷺ while Usama, Saʿd, and my father or Ubai were (sitting there) with him. She said, (in the message); My child is going to die; please come to us." Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned the messenger and told him to convey his greetings to her, and say, "Whatever Allah takes, is for Him and whatever He gives is for Him, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world): so she should be patient and hope for Allah's reward." Then she again sent for him swearing that he should come; so The Prophet ﷺ got up, and so did we. When he sat there (at the house of his daughter), the child was brought to him, and he took him into his lap while the child's breath was disturbed in his chest. The eyes of Messenger of Allah ﷺ started shedding tears. Saʿd said, "What is this, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is the mercy which Allah has lodged in the hearts of whoever He wants of His slaves, and verily Allah is merciful only to those of His slaves who are merciful (to others).'

We were with the Prophet ﷺ when suddenly there came to him a messenger from one of his daughters who was asking him to come and see her son who was dying. The Prophet ﷺ said (to the messenger), "Go back and tell her that whatever Allah takes is His, and whatever He gives is His, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world). On that the eyes of the Prophet ﷺ became flooded with tears, whereupon Saʿd said to him, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What is this?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is mercy which Allah has put in the heart of His slaves, and Allah bestows His mercy only on those of His slaves who are merciful (to others)."

While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, one of his daughters sent to him (the Messenger) to call him and inform him that her child or her son was dying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told the messenger to go back and tell her that what Allah had taken belonged to Him, and to him belonged what He granted; and He has an appointed time for everything. So you (the messenger) order her to show endurance and seek reward from Allah. The messenger came back and said: She adjures him to come to her. He got up to go accompanied by Sa'd b. 'Ubada, Mu'adh b. Jabal, and I also went along with them. The child was lifted to him and his soul was feeling as restless as if it was in an old (waterskin). His (Prophet's) eyes welled up with tears. Sa'd said: What is this, Messenger of Allah? He replied: This is compassion which Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants, and God shows compassion only to those of His servants who are compassionate.

[Machine] We were with the Prophet ﷺ when a messenger came from one of his daughters. The Messenger of Allah said, "She has sent to you, asking you to come to her because her child is dying." He said, "Go to her and say to her: Verily, Allah takes what He wills and gives what He wills, and everything with Him has a fixed term. So be patient and seek reward from Allah." He said, "Not long after, he returned and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, she insists that you come to her.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up, and a group of Ansar went with him. We entered and the child was brought to him, and his voice was rattling in his chest, and his eyes were overflowing with tears. Sa'd ibn 'Ubada said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is this?' He ﷺ said, 'It is a mercy that Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants, and Allah has mercy only on His merciful servants.'"

(Using translation from Bukhārī 1284)
