2. Book of Knowledge (2/4)
[Machine] "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , when he glanced with his eyes towards the sky and then said, 'This is the time when knowledge will be taken away from people until they will not be able to learn anything from it.' Ziyad ibn Labid al-Ansari said, 'O Messenger of Allah, how will knowledge be taken away from us when we have read the Qur'an? By Allah, we will recite it and teach it to our women and children.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'May your mother grieve for you, O Ziyad! I used to consider you among the knowledgeable people of Madinah. This Torah and Injil (Gospel) are with the Jews and Christians, so what will be the use of them?' Jubair said, 'I met Ubadah ibn as-Samit and said to him, 'Don't you listen to what your brother Abu ad-Darda is saying?' I informed him about what he said. He replied, 'Abu ad-Darda has spoken the truth. If you wish, I can tell you about the first knowledge to be lifted from people, which is khushu (humility and submissiveness in prayer). Soon, you will enter a congregational mosque, but you will not find a single person in it who is truly humble.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is the time of the disappearance of knowledge." Shu'bah (narrator) said, "Or he said, the time of the interruption of knowledge." They asked, "How can this be when we have the Book of Allah, and we teach it to our children and their children?" He (the Messenger of Allah) replied, "May your mother lose you! I thought you were one of the most knowledgeable people in Madinah. Are not the Jews and Christians among them who have the Book of Allah, the Torah and the Gospel, but they do not benefit from it in any way?" "The hadith is well established without any doubt, with the narration of Ziyad ibn Labid with a clear chain of transmission."
[Machine] "A narration from Zirr ibn Hubaysh, trustworthy witnesses, other than Asim ibn Bahdalah. Among them is Al-Minhaal ibn Amr, and they both agreed upon it." The chain of narration is authentic.
[Machine] A man named Safwan ibn Assal came from Murad to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "What brought you here?" He replied, "Seeking knowledge." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, the angels spread their wings in approval of the seeker of knowledge." The narration mentions, "This is Arim, Abu Nu'man Muhammad ibn Al-Fadl Al-Basri, a knowledgeable and trustworthy person whom Al-Bukhari relied upon in various narrations of this hadith. He narrated it from him in Sahih. However, Sinan ibn Farrowkh contradicted him in this hadith, and he narrated it from As-Sa'q ibn Hazn."
[Machine] "I came to the Messenger of Allah and he mentioned the hadith, 'And Abu Janab Al-Kalbi prevented Talhah bin Musarrif from narrating from Zirr bin Hubaysh. And Abu Janab, whoever does not rely on his narration in this book, Shiban contradicted him."
[Machine] "Indeed, he does not do what you have done for him, except that the angels have placed their wings over him in satisfaction of what he does. And we have mentioned in this Hadith of what is not weakened, as this Hadith has been narrated by a group and another group has stopped at it, and the one who narrated it is more reliable, and the addition from them is accepted."
[Machine] So we asked him, "Do you talk like this and you're Iraqi?" He replied, "Because I heard Abu Huraira narrating from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: 'Whoever is asked about knowledge and conceals it, will be brought with a bridle of fire on the Day of Judgment.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is asked about knowledge and conceals it, Allah will bridle him with a bridle of fire on the Day of Resurrection."
"So I said to him, 'He made a mistake in this regard, either Azhar bin Marwan or your teacher Ibn Ahmad Al-Wasiti, and excluding both of them is far-fetched.'"
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever conceals knowledge, Allah will bridle him with a bridle of fire on the Day of Resurrection.' This is an authentic narration from the Egyptians, according to the conditions of both Al-Bukhari and Muslim, and it does not have any defects. It is also narrated in the same chapter through a group of companions, other than Abu Hurairah, according to their condition, and it does not have any defect."
[Machine] "Do you know why I walked with you?" They said, "Yes, we are the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and you walked with us." He said, "Indeed, you are visiting a people who have a recitation of the Qur'an like the buzzing of bees. Do not distract them with your narrations, narrow down the recitation of the Qur'an, and decrease the narrations from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . And I am your partner." When they arrived at Qaraza, they said, "Tell us." He said, "Ibn al-Khattab prohibited us."
[Machine] "I entered upon Qaradah ibn Ka'b, Abu Mas'ud, and Zaid ibn Thabit, and found slave girls with them singing. So I said to them, 'Are you doing this while being companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?' They replied, 'If you can hear, then listen; otherwise, leave. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allowed us to engage in playful activities, participate in weddings, and cry at funerals.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever attributes to me what I have not said should take his place in Hellfire, and whoever seeks advice from his brother and he misguides him, then he has betrayed him. And whoever issues a fatwa without knowledge, then his sin is upon the one who takes his fatwa." This was narrated by Yahya ibn Ayyub from Bakr ibn Amr, who relied on his narrations except for Amr, and he was trustworthy.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever attributes to me that which I did not say, let him take his place in Hellfire. And whoever gives a fatwa (religious verdict) without knowledge, his sin is upon the one who gave him the fatwa. And whoever points to his brother with something he knows is wrong, then he has betrayed him."
[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: "There will be, in the last days, people from my Ummah (nation) who will inform you about things you and your fathers have not heard. So, be cautious of them and their words."
[Machine] "Economy in the Sunnah is better than striving in innovation." Narrated by Thawri from Al-A'mash from Malik ibn Al-Harith.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from four things: Knowledge which does not profit, a heart which is not submissive, a soul which has an insatiable appetite, and a supplication which is not heard." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1548)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate and say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that does not fear (You), from a soul that is not satisfied, and from a prayer that is not heard." And he has a authentic witness in the narration of Anas bin Malik on the condition of being narrated by Muslim.
[Machine] One of the supplications of the Prophet ﷺ was: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that is of no benefit, from a heart that does not humble itself, from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a prayer that is not answered." And he would say at the end of it, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from these four." "And it has been reported to me that Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj included it in his narration from Zaid ibn Arqam from the Prophet ﷺ ." And this is according to the condition of Muslim.
[Machine] "About the Prophet ﷺ, he is just a human being who gets angry just like other humans. So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the Quraysh say that I write about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but he is just a human being who gets angry just like other humans.' He motioned with his lips and said, 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing comes out from between these two lips except the truth, so write.'"
[Machine] He said, "O Messenger of Allah, should I write down what I hear from you?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Should I write down both when you are angry and when you are pleased?" He said, "Yes, for it is not permissible for me to speak except the truth." So let the seeker of this knowledge know that no one ever narrated in the lifetime of Amr ibn Shu'aib except Muslim, who heard from Shu'aib through Abdullah ibn Amr. And when a hadith is narrated from Amr ibn Shu'aib from Mujahid from Abdullah ibn Amr, then it is an authentic hadith, although I have mentioned it as a witness to the hadith of Abdul Wahid ibn Qays, and this same hadith has been narrated verbatim from Yusuf ibn Mahak.
[Machine] I used to write everything I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I wanted to memorize it, but the Quraysh forbade me and said, "You write everything you hear from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a human who speaks in a state of satisfaction and anger?" So I refrained and mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Write, by the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing comes out of him except the truth." And he pointed with his hand towards those who narrated this Hadith, as they were used as evidence by others after them, excluding Al-Walid. And I think it is Al-Walid ibn Abi Al-Walid Al-Shami, for he is Al-Walid ibn Abdullah, and it is known that his father was literate. If that is the case, then Muslim used him as evidence, and the narration from Amir al-Mu'minin Umar ibn al-Khattab has been authenticated, in which he said, "Limit the knowledge with the book." If Al-Walid is the son of Abu al-Walid al-Shami, then he is a condition set by Muslim.
[Machine] This is a authentic narration from Anas ibn Malik and it has been attributed to him from a reliable source. As for the narration from his saying, it is also correct and has been confirmed to be his statement.
[Machine] "He used to say to his sons, 'Record knowledge in writing.' It was narrated by some of the people of Basra from the Ansari, and it was also narrated by a respected elder from the people of Mecca who heard it from Ibn Jurayj."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Attach importance to knowledge." I asked, "And how should we attach importance to it?" He said, "By writing it down." Ibn al-Mumal is considered weak.
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, I said to a man from the Ansar, "Come, let us ask the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , for today they are many.” He said, astonished, "Oh Ibn Abbas, do you think people are in need of you while there are companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among the people?" He said, "So I left that and approached to ask the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and if the narration reached me from a person, I would go to his door, leaning my shawl against it while the wind blew dust on me. Then he would come out and see me, and he would say, 'O cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , what brought you? Why didn't you send someone to come to me?' I would say, 'I am more deserving to come to you.'" He said, "So I would ask him about the hadith and this Ansari man lived until he saw me and the people gathered around me to ask me, and he would say, 'This young boy was more intelligent than me.'"

People dispersed from around Abu Huraira, and Natil, who was from the Syrians. said to him: O Shaikh, relate (to us) a tradition you have heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The first of men (whose case) will be decided on the Day of Judgment will be a man who died as a martyr. He shall be brought (before the Judgment Seat). Allah will make him recount His blessings (i. e. the blessings which He had bestowed upon him) and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his life). (Then) will Allah say: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I fought for Thee until I died as a martyr. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You fought that you might be called a" brave warrior". And you were called so. (Then) orders will be passed against him and he will be dragged with his face downward and cast into Hell. Then will be brought forward a man who acquired knowledge and imparted it (to others) and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought And Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Then will Allah ask: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I acquired knowledge and disseminated it and recited the Qur'an seeking Thy pleasure. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You acquired knowledge so that you might be called" a scholar," and you recited the Qur'an so that it might be said:" He is a Qari" and such has been said. Then orders will be passed against him and he shall be dragged with his face downward and cast into the Fire. Then will be brought a man whom Allah had made abundantly rich and had granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and (admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Allah will (then) ask: What have you done (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I spent money in every cause in which Thou wished that it should be spent. Allah will say: You are lying. You did (so) that it might be said about (You):" He is a generous fellow" and so it was said. Then will Allah pass orders and he will be dragged with his face downward and thrown into Hell. [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There are three types of people who are doomed at the time of reckoning: a generous person who is extravagant, a brave person who is reckless, and a knowledgeable person who does not act upon his knowledge."
[Machine] Abu Hurairah, if it were not for the fact that Allah had taken a covenant from the People of the Book, I would not have told you about anything. Then he recited, "And [mention] when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], 'You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it.'" [Quran 3:187]

[Machine] Abu Hurayrah used to stand on the side of the pulpit on Fridays, throwing the straps of his sandals on his arms. Then he would grab onto the handle of the pulpit and say, "Abu Al-Qasim (the Prophet Muhammad) said, 'The Messenger of Allah said, 'The truthful, the trustworthy person said.''' And then he would say about some of that, "Woe to the Arabs from an impending evil." When he heard the sound of the door of the prayer area opening for the Imam to come out, he would sit down.

[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "I do not trust anyone of you while reclining on his couch, when something from my commands or prohibitions comes to him and he says, 'We do not know what we found in the Book of Allah, so we followed it.'" Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah has established this chain and it is authentic according to the conditions of both al-Bukhari and Muslim, but they did not include it. As for me, they left it due to the disagreement of the Egyptians regarding this chain according to their conditions and they left it.

[Machine] He heard Al-Miqdam ibn Ma'di Yakrib Al-Kindi, the companion of the Prophet (pbuh), saying: "The Prophet (pbuh) declared certain things forbidden on the day of Khaybar, including domestic donkeys and others." The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) then said: "Soon, a person from among you will sit on his couch and narrate my hadith, saying, 'Between me and you is the Book of Allah. Whatever we find permissible in it, we declare it permissible, and whatever we find forbidden in it, we declare it forbidden.' Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) forbade only what Allah had forbidden." As for the second hadith, Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.

[Machine] From the tradition of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , when a man said to him, "O Abu Nujayd, tell us about the Quran," Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Are you and your companions reciting the Quran? Were you informed about the prayer and its obligations? Were you informed about the zakat (charity) in terms of gold, camels, cows, and different forms of wealth? However, I have witnessed and you have been absent." Then he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made it obligatory for us in zakat such and such." The man said, "You have revived me, may Allah revive you." Al-Hasan said, "That man did not die until he became one of the scholars of the Muslims, Uqbah ibn Khalid Al-Shanni, from the trustworthy people of Basra and its worshipers. He was an esteemed narrator of hadith whose narrations were compiled, but he did not reach the perfection of the ten merits (top narrators). May peace be upon Muhammad and his family, all of them."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is enough for a person to be sinful by speaking about everything he hears." Muslim mentioned this hadith in the midst of the narrations he mentioned in his sermon in the book, regarding Muhammad ibn Rafee', without using it as evidence in its proper place in the book. Ali ibn Ja'far al-Madaini is trustworthy, and he warned us at the beginning of the book to debate using the statements of trustworthy narrators. A group of Shu'bah's companions transmitted this. Muslim mentioned it in an authentic sermon.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is sufficient for a person to be considered sinful by narrating everything he hears."
[Machine] This is a valid chain of narration according to the conditions of the two sheikhs, and it has another similar witness.
[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he was not lying, when the people faced difficulty and humiliation, we stopped talking about it and sent peace and blessings upon Muhammad and his family.
[Machine] The last thing the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to us was: "Stick to the Book of Allah, and you will return to a people who love Hadiths about me or something similar. Whoever memorizes something should narrate it, and whoever attributes to me something I did not say should take his seat in the Fire." This hadith is narrated by the last among them, and it is referenced by them. As for Abu Musa Malik ibn Ubada al-Ghafari, he is a companion who settled in Egypt. This hadith is one of the things we have transmitted from the companion if the way to him is authentic, although the farewell of al-Juhani also narrates it from Malik ibn Ubada al-Ghafari. This hadith combines two strange phrases, one of them being: "You will return to a people who love Hadiths about me," and the other being: "Whoever memorizes something should narrate it." A group of Islamic scholars have concluded that a narrator should only narrate what he has memorized, and they did not consider these two phrases as evidence.
The people used to ask Messenger of Allah ﷺ about good, but I used to ask him about evil for fear that it might overtake me. Once I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We were in ignorance and in evil and Allah has bestowed upon us the present good; will there by any evil after this good?" He said, "Yes." I asked, "Will there be good after that evil?" He said, "Yes, but it would be tained with Dakhan (i.e. Little evil)." I asked, "What will its Dakhan be?" He said, "There will be some people who will lead (people) according to principles other than my tradition. You will see their actions and disapprove of them." I said, "Will there by any evil after that good?" He said, "Yes, there will be some people who will invite others to the doors of Hell, and whoever accepts their invitation to it will be thrown in it (by them)." I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Describe those people to us." He said, "They will belong to us and speak our language" I asked, "What do you order me to do if such a thing should take place in my life?" He said, "Adhere to the group of Muslims and their Chief." I asked, "If there is neither a group (of Muslims) nor a chief (what shall I do)?" He said, "Keep away from all those different sects, even if you had to bite (i.e. eat) the root of a tree, till you meet Allah while you are still in that state."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood before us as I am standing before you, and said: ʿI urge you to show respect to my Companions, then those who come after them, then those who come after them, then lying will become so widespread that a man will start to give testimony before he is asked to do so.Whoever among you wants to attain a spacious abode in Paradise, let him adhere to the jama'ah (main body of Muslims), for the Shaitan is with the one who is alone, but he is further away from two. And no one of you should be alone with a woman for the Shaitan will be the third one present. The one who is pleased with his good deeds and upset by his bad deeds is a believer.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 114)
