The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best charity is that which is practiced by a wealthy person. And start giving first to your dependents."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand (i.e. he who gives in charity is better than him who takes it). One should start giving first to his dependents. And the best object of charity is that which is given by a wealthy person (from the money which is left after his expenses). And whoever abstains from asking others for some financial help, Allah will give him and save him from asking others, Allah will make him self-sufficient."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ وَخَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ يَسْتَغْنِ يُغْنِهِ اللَّهُ وَعَنْ وُهَيْبٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ بِهَذَا

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best alms is that which you give when you are rich, and you should start first to support your dependants."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

The most excellent Sadaqa or the best of Sadaqa is that after giving which the (giver) remains rich and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin from the members of your household.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ أَوْ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying The best sadaqah is that which leaves a competence ; and begin with those for whom you are responsible.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ خَيْرَ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا تَرَكَ غِنًى أَوْ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

"The best of charity is that which is given when you are self-sufficient, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and start with those for whom you are responsible."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

"The Messenger of Allah said: "The best kind of charity is that which is given when you are rich, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and start with those for whom you are responsible."'

قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

"The Messenger of Allah said: "The best of charity is that which is given when you are self-sufficient, and start with those for whom you are responsible."'

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The best charity is that which is given when one is still rich, and let one of you begin by supporting those who are dependent upon him."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَلْيَبْدَأْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَعُولُ»

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand (i.e. he who gives in charity is better than him who takes it). One should start giving first to his dependents. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا صَدَقَةَ إِلَّا عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

[AI] Narrated Abu Hurairah: The best charity is that which is given while one is self-sufficient, and start with those who depend on you.

قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

[AI] And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and start with those whom you are responsible for."

وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best charitable act is that done when one is wealthy, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand. Start with those who are dependent on you." Yahya once said, "There is no charity except from one's surplus wealth."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

[AI] "From the Prophet ﷺ , he said: The best charity is that which is given while one is still wealthy, and begin with those who depend on you. The upper hand is better than the lower hand."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَةُ عَنْظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best charity is what is given when one is wealthy, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand. Begin with those whom you are responsible for." Abu Hurairah was asked, "Who are those you are responsible for?" He replied, "Your wife might say, 'Feed me, or spend on me if you have doubt, for Abu 'Amir is my rival.' And your servant might say, 'Feed me and employ me.' And your daughter might ask, 'To whom will you leave me?'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ قَالَ سُئِلَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ مَا مَنْ تَعُولُ؟ قَالَ امْرَأَتُكَ تَقُولُ أَطْعِمْنِي أَوْ أَنْفِقْ عَلَيَّ شَكَّ أَبُو عَامِرٍ أَوْ طَلِّقْنِي وَخَادِمُكَ يَقُولُ أَطْعِمْنِي وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي وَابْنَتُكَ تَقُولُ إِلَى مَنْ تَذَرُنِي؟

[AI] "Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ that he said, 'The best charity is that which is given when one is wealthy, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand. Start with those whom you are obliged to provide for.' It was said, 'Who are those whom we are obliged to provide for, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Your wife, from whom you take obedience (i.e., fulfill her rights) saying, 'Feed me, otherwise divorce me.' Your neighbor said, 'Feed me and employ me.' And your child said, 'To whom will you leave me?'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ مِنْهَا عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ فَقِيلَ مَنْ أَعُولُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ امْرَأَتُكَ مِمَّنْ تَعُولُ تَقُولُ أَطْعِمْنِي وَإِلَّا فَارِقْنِي وَجَارِيَتُكَ تَقُولُ أَطْعِمْنِي وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي وَوَلَدُكَ يَقُولُ إِلَى مَنْ تَتْرُكُنِي

"The best of charity is that which is given when you are self-sufficient, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and start with those for whom you are responsible." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2534)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى

[AI] I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "The best charity is the one given out of surplus wealth, and start with those whom you are responsible for. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand."

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ صَدَقَةٌ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِالسُّفْلَى

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ خَيْرَالصَّدَقَةِ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and start with those who are under your responsibility. Whoever asks Allah for sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient, and whoever seeks refuge with Allah, Allah will grant him refuge."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ مَنْ يَسْتَغْنِ يُغْنِهِ اللهُ وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفَّ يُعِفَّهُ اللهُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best charity or the most virtuous charity is that which leaves you wealthy, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand. Begin with those who depend on you."

قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ أَوْ أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا أَبْقَتْ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and let one of you start with those he is responsible for. The best charity is that which is given when one is still self-sufficient. Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will enrich him, and whoever seeks chastity, Allah will keep him chaste." So I said, "And who is it from you, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "From me." I said, "May my hand never be beneath the hand of an Arab man."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَلْيَبْدَأْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَعُولُ وَخَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَمَنْ يَسْتَغْنِ يُغْنِهِ اللهُ وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللهُ فَقُلْتُ وَمِنْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ وَمِنِّي قَالَ حَكِيمٌ قُلْتُ لَا تَكُونُ يَدِي تَحْتَ يَدِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ أَبَدًا

"The Messenger of Allah said: "The best of charity is that which is given when you are self-sufficient, and start with those for whom you are responsible."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2544)

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best charity is what is given while one is self-sufficient, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand. Let one of you start with those who depend on him. His wife will say, 'Spend on me,' and his mother will say, 'To whom will you entrust me?' And his servant will say, 'Feed me and give me employment.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَلْيَبْدَأْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَعُولُ تَقُولُ امْرَأَتُهُ أَنْفِقْ عَلَيَّ وَتَقُولُ أُمُّ وَلَدِهِ إِلَى مَنْ تَكِلُنِي؟ وَيَقُولُ لَهُ عَبْدُهُ أَطْعِمْنِي وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي»

"The best of charity is that which is given when you are self-sufficient, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and start with those for whom you are responsible." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2534)

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ»

قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

عَن النَّبِيّ ﷺ؛ أَنَّه قال خير الصدقة ما كان عن ظهر غنى وابدأ بمن تعول

عن ظهر غنى واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى وابدأ بمن تعول

قَالَ قَالَ رَسُول اللهِ ﷺ خير الصدقة ما كان عن ظهر غنى وليبدأ أحدكم بمن يعول

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and one should start with those who are dependent on him. The best charity is that which is given while one is self-sufficient, and whoever seeks chastity, Allah will assist him with it, and whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَلْيَبْدَأْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَعُولُ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللهُ وَمَنْ يَسْتَغْنِ يُغْنِهِ اللهُ ﷻ»

[AI] He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and let one of you begin with the person he provides for. The best charity is that which is given in a state of wealth, and whoever refrains, Allah will make him abstain, and whoever seeks sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَلْيَبْدَأْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَعُولُ وَخَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللهُ وَمَنْ يَسْتَغْنِ يُغْنِهِ اللهُ ﷻ»

[AI] He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and one of you should start with those who depend on him. The best charity is giving from what is sufficient, and the person who refrains from asking, Allah will make him self-sufficient, and the one who is self-sufficient, Allah will make him rich."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَلْيَبْدَأْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَعُولُ وَخَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللهُ وَمَنِ اسْتَغْنَى أَغْنَاهُ اللهُ»

[AI] I came to the Prophet ﷺ to ask him, and he said, "Indeed, whoever asks people and is given, it is like one who eats and the hand that gives is better than the hand that receives. And the best charity is what is given while one is still self-sufficient. Begin with those whom you are responsible for." The wise person said, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, by the One who has honored you, I will never take anything from anyone."

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لِأَسْأَلَهُ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ مَنْ يَسْأَلُ النَّاسَ فَيُعْطَى يَكُونُ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَنْفَعُهُ مَا أَكَلَ الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَخَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ» قَالَ حَكِيمٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَالَّذِي أَكْرَمَكَ لَا آخُذُ مِنْ أَحَدٍ شَيْئًا أَبَدًا

[AI] He asked the Prophet ﷺ , "Which charity is best?" He said, "Start with those whom you are responsible for, and charity is better given in secrecy."

أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَيُّ الصَّدَقَةِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «ابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ وَالصَّدَقَةُ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى»
