11. Anṣār (8/12)
Gabriel came to me and gave me the tidings: Verily he who died amongst your Ummah without associating anything with Allah would enter Paradise. I (the narrator) said: Even if he committed adultery and theft. He (the Holy Prophet) said: (Yes), even if he committed adultery and theft. (Using translation from Muslim 94a)
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "I have been granted five things that no one before me was granted. The land has been made a place of prayer for me, and it is permissible for me to perform ablution with soil. The spoils of war have been made lawful for me, and they were not lawful for any prophet before me. I have been granted victory through fear for a distance of one month's journey against my enemies. The whole earth has been made a place of worship and a purifier for me. I have been granted the intercession, and it will be given to one from my nation who does not associate partners with Allah." Hajjaj said, "Those who die without associating partners with Allah."
The Prophet ﷺ as saying: There are three to whom Allah will not speak and at whom He will not look on the Day of Resurrection, and whom He will not declare pure, and they will have a painful punishment. I asked: Who are they, Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He repeated it three times. I asked: Who are they. Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He replied: The one who wears a trailing robe, the one who takes account of what he gives, and the one who produces a ready sale of a commodity by false swearing. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4087)
"I heard Abu Dharr, at Ar-Rabadhah, saying: 'The Messenger of Allah said: if you want to fast at any time during the monthm then fast on the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2424)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Mu'awiya narrated to us from Al-A'mash, from Munthir bin Ya'la, from Ashyakh, from Abu Dharr, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw two goats butting heads. He said, "O Abu Dharr, do you know why they are doing this?" Abu Dharr replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah knows, and He will judge between them."
[Machine] We have indeed left the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and not a bird flying in the sky except that it reminds us of him with knowledge.
[Machine] We were informed by a migrant, Abi al-Hasan from the tribe of Taym Allah, who was their freed slave. He said, "We returned from a funeral procession and passed by Zaid ibn Wahb, who narrated from Abu Dharr. He said, 'We were traveling with the Prophet ﷺ when the Mu'adhin wanted to call the adhan. The Prophet ﷺ told him to wait and then he wanted to call the adhan again. The Prophet ﷺ told him to wait, and he repeated this three times. Until we saw the shade of the black crow. The Prophet ﷺ prayed and then said, 'The intensity of the heat is from the breath of Hell. So, when the weather is hot, cool yourselves with prayer.'"
[Machine] "That this horse had his call answered." He said, "And what is the supplication of an animal compared to the supplication of animals?" He said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, there is no horse that does not call upon every charm and say, 'O Allah, You have made me a servant among Your servants and You have made my sustenance in Your hand, so make me more beloved to him (the owner) than his family, wealth, and children.'" Abdullah ibn Ahmad said, "My father and 'Amr ibn al-Harith both agreed with him (ibn Shimasa)."
[Machine] "He accompanied Abu Dharr, and when he returned, people scattered away from him. So I said, 'O Abu Dharr, I have a question for you regarding something from the matters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said, 'If it is a secret from the secrets of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then I did not inform you about it.' I said, 'It is not a secret, but whenever he would meet a person, he would take his hand and shake it.' He said, 'Regarding this, I messed up. He never shook my hand except one time, and that was the last time. He sent for me, so I went to him in the illness in which he passed away. I found him lying down, so I leaned over him. He raised his hand and then stopped me.'"
[Machine] He said to Abu Dharr when he left Sham and mentioned the hadith and said in it, "Was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shaking hands with you when he met you?" He said, "I never met him except that he shook my hand."
[Machine] I was behind the Prophet ﷺ when we left the outskirts of Medina. He said, "O Abu Dharr, pray the prayer on time. Even if you come and find the imam praying, you will have already achieved your prayer if you have prayed before that. And if you come and the prayer has not been offered, then pray with him. Your prayer will be considered a voluntary act for you, and you would have already achieved your obligatory prayer, O Abu Dharr. What do you think if the people are hungry to the point that they cannot make it to your mosque due to exhaustion or cannot return to their homes due to exhaustion, what would you do?" I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Fast." I said, "O Abu Dharr, what do you think if the people die to the extent that the houses are filled with slaves, what would you do?" I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Have patience." I said, "O Abu Dharr, what do you think if the people are killed to the extent that the stones of the oil become saturated with blood, what would you do?" I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Enter your home." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what if I am invited?" He said, "Then you should go if you are invited." I said, "And if I am carrying a weapon?" He said, "Then you are participating." I said, "How should I act, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "If you fear that the shine of the sword would dazzle you, then throw part of your garment on your face. It would keep away both your sin and his sin."
[Machine] I asked the Prophet ﷺ about everything until I asked him about wiping stones. He said, "Use one or leave it." Mu'mal replied, "It is preferred to level the stones or wipe them."
We fasted with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during Ramadan, but he did not make us get up at night for prayer at any time during the month till seven nights remained; then he made us get up for prayer till a third of the night had passed. When the sixth remaining night came, he did not make us get up for prayer. When the fifth remaining night came, he made us stand in prayer till a half of the night had gone. So I said: Messenger of Allah, I wish you had led us in supererogatory prayers during the whole of tonight. He said: When a man prays with an imam till he goes he is reckoned as having spent a whole night in prayer. On the fourth remaining night he did not make us get up. When the third remaining night came, he gathered his family, his wives, and the people and prayed with us till we were afraid we should miss the falah (success). I said: What is falah? He said: The meal before daybreak. Then he did not make us get up for prayer during the remainder of the month. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1375)
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When anyone of you gets up to perform prayer, then indeed mercy is facing him, so he should not smooth the pebbles.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1027)
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, which deeds are the best?" The Prophet replied, "Believing in Allah and striving in His cause." The man then asked, "Which form of charity is the best?" The Prophet said, "To give of what you have earned through your own efforts." The man asked, "And what if I cannot do that?" The Prophet replied, "Then assist a worker or do some work for a handicapped person." The man asked, "And if I am unable to do even that?" The Prophet said, "Then refrain from harming others, for that is a charitable act you can do for yourself."
[Machine] A man named Akkaf ibn Bishr al-Tamimi came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "O Akkaf, do you have a wife?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you have a servant girl?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Are you capable of getting married?" He replied, "Yes, I am capable." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Then you are among the brothers of the Shaytans. If you were among the Christians, you would be among their monks. Indeed, our way is that marriage is the best for you, while celibacy is the worst. Your young men who are celibate are the lowliest of your dead. Are you fornicating with the devil? There is no weapon that the devil possesses that is more effective against the righteous than women. Except for those who are married, they are the purified and innocent ones. Woe unto you, O Akkaf! They are the companions of Ayub, Dawud, Yusuf, and Khosrow." Bishr ibn Atiyya asked, "Who is Khosrow, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "He was a man who worshipped Allah on a beach from the beaches of the sea for three hundred years. He used to fast during the day and pray at night. Then he disbelieved in Allah the Almighty because of a woman he loved, and he left his worship of Allah. Then Allah caught up with him by revealing to him some of what he used to do, so he repented. Woe unto you, O Akkaf! Get married, otherwise you will be among the unstable." Akkaf said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have married you to Kareemah, the daughter of Kulthum al-Himeiri."

[Machine] I was in the city when suddenly I saw a man whom people were fleeing from. He said, "Who are you?" I said, "Who are you?" He said, "I am Abu Dhar, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." I said, "Why are people fleeing from you?" He said, "I am preventing them from the treasures that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to prevent them from."
[Machine] "I entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque and found a man who was constantly prostrating. I felt the urge to do the same. When he finished, I asked him, 'Do you know if you are leaving upon completion of a supererogatory act or an obligatory act?' He replied, 'I do not know, for Allah knows best.' Then he said, 'My beloved, Abu Al-Qasim ﷺ , informed me that whenever a servant prostrates to Allah, Allah elevates them in rank, removes a sin from them, and writes a good deed for them.' I asked, 'May Allah have mercy on you, please inform me of who you are.' He replied, 'I am Abu Dhar, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' Then he came closer to me."

[Machine] "He met Abu Dharr while he was leading his camel, and there was a pouch tied around his neck. So I said to him, 'Won't you narrate to me a Hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said, 'Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "No two Muslim parents have three of their children who die before reaching the age of puberty, but Allah will admit them to Paradise by His mercy. And no Muslim spends on two wives from his wealth in the way of Allah, but the veil of Paradise will shade him." And Yazid said: 'Except that Allah will admit them to Paradise by His mercy.'"

[Machine] I went out to the outskirts, and suddenly Abu Dharr came and spoke to his wife about something. It seemed like she responded to him, and he left and came back, and she also came back. He said, "Why do you argue with what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said? A woman is like a rib; if you try to straighten her, she will break. And there is also a kind of crookedness in her."
[Machine] I said to Abu Dhar, "What is the matter with the black dog?" He said, "Indeed, I have asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that, and he said, 'Verily, it is a devil.'"

[Machine] "O sons of Ghifar, speak and do not differ, for the truthful who is confirmed has informed me that people will be gathered into three groups – a group riding and eating, and a group walking and exerting effort, and a group dragged by angels on their faces and they will be brought to the Fire. Then one of them will say: 'We recognize these two groups, but what is the situation of those who are walking and exerting effort?' It will be said: 'Allah strikes affliction on the back until there is no longer a back left.' Even a man may have the most delightful garden, so he offers it to the one at the edge with thorns, and he is unable to do anything about it."

[Machine] The good boy followed me and a man who was with him said, "O son of my brother, pray to Allah for me with goodness." I said, "And who are you? May Allah bless you." He said, "I am Abu Dhar, a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." So I said, "May Allah forgive you, you are more deserving of praying for me than I am for you." He said, "O son of my brother, I heard Umar ibn Al-Khattab say, when I passed by him, 'Indeed, the good boy.' And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Verily, Allah placed the truth on the tongue of Umar.'"

Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'The closest of you to me on the Day of Judgment will be the one who resembles me the most in his appearance when I left him in this world. [Machine] I was with the Prophet ﷺ riding on a donkey, and it had a saddlecloth or a blanket on it. He said to me, "O Abu Dhar, do you know where this (the sun) sets?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Indeed, it sets in a hot spring and travels until it prostrates itself to its Lord beneath the Throne. When its time to rise comes, Allah gives it permission to rise, and it rises. And when it is time for it to set from where it rises, it is prevented and it utters: 'O Lord! My course is far, so give me permission.' So, Allah lets it rise from the place where it sets. That is the time when the soul's faith will not benefit it."

[Machine] We had carried something for Abu Dhar that we wanted to give to him, so we went to Ar-Rabadha and asked about him, but we did not find him. It was said that he had requested permission for Hajj and it was granted to him, so we went to him in Al-Balda, which is Mina. While we were with him, it was said to him that Uthman had prayed four (rak'ah) units of prayer. This greatly affected Abu Dhar, and he said something severe. He said, "I have prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I have prayed with Abu Bakr and Umar. Then Abu Dhar stood and prayed four (rak'ah) units of prayer. He was told, "Did you criticize the Amir al-Mu'minin (commander of the faithful) for something, then do it yourself?" Al-Khulafa (caliphs) are more severe (in their punishments). Verily, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon and said, "Verily, there will be after me rulers, so do not humiliate them. Whoever wants to humiliate them, then he has removed the bond of Islam from his neck, and his repentance is not acceptable until he draws back his slander, which he uttered, and he is not a doer of that action again. He should be in whoever supports us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us not to overpower him in three matters: commanding good, forbidding evil, and teaching people (Islamic) customs."

No person who claimed knowingly anyone else as his father besides (his own) committed nothing but infidelity, and he who made a claim of anything, which (in fact) did not belong to him, is not amongst us; he should make his abode in Fire, and he who labeled anyone with unbelief or called him the enemy of Allah, and he was in fact not so, it rebounded on him. (Using translation from Muslim 61)

[Machine] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he was wearing a white garment. I found him asleep, so I came to him again and he was still asleep. Then I came to him and he had woken up, so I sat with him. He said, "There is no servant who says 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah' and then dies upon that except that he enters Paradise." I said, "Even if he commits adultery and steals?" He said, "Even if he commits adultery and steals?" I said, "Even if he commits adultery and steals?" He said, "Even if he commits adultery and steals," repeating it three times. Then he said, "And even if Abu Dharr's nose is irritated." Abu Dharr then went out, dragging his garment, saying, "Even if Abu Dharr's nose is irritated." Abu Dharr used to narrate this incident and say, "Even if Abu Dharr's nose is irritated."

[Machine] Abu Dharr was on his deathbed while wearing a simple garment. His wife cried, and he asked her why she was crying. She said, "I cry because I have no life without you, and I have no shroud that will fit you as a burial cloth." He comforted her, saying, "Do not cry, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say one day when I was with him, 'A man will die among you with just a piece of land as his witness, accompanied by a group of believers.' He continued, 'Everyone who was with me in that gathering has passed away, divided into different groups, and I am the only one left. I am going to die in this piece of land. Watch the road, for you will witness what I say. I swear by Allah, I have not lied or will ever lie.' She asked, 'How is that possible when the journey has been cut off?' He said, 'Watch the road.' While they were talking, a group of people approached, dragging their garments behind them as if they were flags. They asked, 'What is wrong with you?' She replied, 'There is a Muslim man who needs to be shrouded and buried, and whoever does so will be rewarded.' They asked, 'Who is he?' She said, 'Abu Dharr.' They paid the ransom with their fathers and mothers and put their belts on her back so she could find them. Abu Dharr said, 'Rejoice, for you are the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke about. Rejoice, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No two Muslim women lose two of their children or three and then seek reward and patience, except they will never see Hell.' Today, I have reached the place where you can see, and if I had a garment that would fit me, I would not be shrouded but in that. I swear by Allah, let no man among you shroud me, whether he be a prince, a servant, or a soldier.' No one in the gathering received anything except a young man from the Ansar who was with the group. He said, 'I am your companion. I have two garments from my mother's dowry spin and I have these two garments on me.' Abu Dharr said, 'You are my companion. Shroud me with them.'"

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the first mosque that was built for the people. He said, "The Sacred Mosque (in Mecca) and then the Al-Aqsa Mosque (in Jerusalem)." He was asked, "How many years between them?" He said, "Forty years. And wherever the prayer time reaches you, pray there. And then there will be another mosque."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was told that the wealthy have taken away all the rewards. He ﷺ said, "Verily, there are many acts of charity for you. So, mention the blessings of your hearing and sight." He ﷺ said, "And in your sexual intimacy, there is charity for you." Abu Dhar asked, "Does one of us get rewarded for fulfilling his sexual desire?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Do you not see that if he thrusts it into a forbidden place, there would be sin on him? Similarly, if he thrusts it into a permissible place, he would be rewarded." Abu Dhar said, "Do you calculate evil deeds but not good ones?"
[Machine] I was sitting with people from the Quraysh, when Abu Dharr came near them and said to me, "The treasure hoarders will be pleased with a certain kind of cloth that comes out of their backsides, and the poor will be pleased with a certain kind of cloth that comes out of their foreheads." Then he stepped aside and sat down. I asked, "Who is this?" Abu Dharr said, "I did not say anything to them except words that they have heard from their Prophet." I asked him, "What do you say about this gift?" He said, "Take it, for today it is a support. If it becomes the price for your religion, then leave it."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "Verily, the evil eye sets alight a man by the permission of Allah. It ascends him and then falls away from him."
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ from his Lord, He said: O son of Adam, as long as you invoke and hope in Me, I will forgive you for whatever sins you have committed, O son of Adam, even if your sins were to reach the clouds in the sky and then you seek My forgiveness, I will forgive you and I will not mind.
[Machine] They said, "O Messenger of Allah, the wealthy people have taken all the rewards. They pray as we pray, they fast as we fast, and they give charity out of their excess wealth." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Has Allah not made it possible for you to give charity? Every tasbih (saying SubhanAllah—glory be to Allah) is a charity, every tahmida (saying Alhamdulillah—praise be to Allah) is a charity, and every tahlila (saying La ilaha illa Allah—there is no god but Allah) is a charity. Even when one of you fulfills his desires (within the limits set by Islam), it is considered a charity." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, if one of us fulfills his desires, will he be rewarded?" He replied, "Do you not see that if he fulfills them unlawfully, he will be held accountable? Similarly, if he fulfills them lawfully, he will be rewarded." 'Affan said, "You should give in charity, say the talbiyah (saying Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk—Here I am, O Allah, Here I am), make takbir (saying Allahu Akbar—Allah is the Greatest), enjoin good, forbid evil. All of these are acts of charity."

[Machine] "He informed us, but he did not mention Abu Al-Aswad."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Every morning, charity is due on every joint of any one of you. Every utterance of praise is charity, every utterance of glorification is charity, every utterance of declaration of the greatness of Allah is charity, every utterance of praise of Allah is charity, commanding good is charity, and forbidding evil is charity. And there is a reward for prayer of two units (rak'at) that one performs during the forenoon (Duha) prayer."
Ayyub ibn Bushayr ibn Ka'b al-Adawi quoted a man of Anazah who said that he asked AbuDharr when he left Syria: I wish to ask you about a tradition of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: I shall tell you except that it is something secret. Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shake hands with you when you met him? He replied: I never met him without his shaking hands with me. One day he sent for me when I was not at home. When I came I was informed that he had sent for me. I came to him and found him on a couch. He embraced me and that was better and better. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5214)
[Machine] So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what if a man works for himself and people love him?" He replied, "That is glad tidings for the believer."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "O Abu Dharr, how would you be if you remain among people who delay the prayer beyond its time?" Abu Dharr answered, so he (the Prophet) said to me, "Pray the prayer at its appointed time. If you catch up with them and they have not prayed, then pray with them, and do not say 'I have already prayed' or 'I will not pray'."
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ slapped his thigh and said to him, 'How would you be if you were among a people who delay the prayer?' Then he said, 'Pray the prayer at its appointed time, and if you are in the mosque until the prayer is established, then pray with them.'"

[Machine] I heard Abu Mujeed saying: I met Abu Dhar and he showed me his silver sword. Abu Dhar advised him against it. Abu Dhar said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one leaves a black or white hair except that it will be held against him on the Day of Judgment."

"The Messenger of Allah said: "There are three to whom of Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection or look at them or purify them, and theirs will be a painful torment: the one who reminds people of what he has given them, the one who lets his garment hang beneath his ankles, and a vendor who tries to sell his product by means of false oaths." [Machine] It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, the wealthy people have taken all the rewards by praying as we pray, fasting as we fast, and giving charity with their surplus wealth." He said, "Has Allah not allowed for you ways to give charity? Verily, with every tasbeehah (saying SubhanAllah) there is a charity, and with every takbeerah (saying Allahu Akbar) there is a charity, and with every tahmeedah (saying Alhamdulillah) there is a charity, and with every tahleelah (saying La ilaha illAllah) there is a charity, and commanding good is a charity, and forbidding evil is a charity, and in the intimate relations of one of you there is a charity." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, if one of us fulfills his desire, will he have some reward for that?" He said, "Do you not see that if he does it in a prohibited manner, he would be deserving of punishment? Likewise, if he does it in a permissible manner, he will have a reward."
