ʿAisha intended to buy Barira (a slave-girl) in order to manumit her and her masters intended to put the condition that her Al-wala would be for them. ʿAisha mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ who said to her, "Buy her, as the "Wala" is for the manumitted." Once some meat was presented to the Prophet ﷺ and ʿAisha said to him, "This (meat) was given in charity to Barira." He said, "It is an object of charity for Barira but a gift for us."

أَنْ يَشْتَرِطُوا وَلاَءَهَا فَذَكَرَتْ عَائِشَةُ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اشْتَرِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلاَءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ قَالَتْ وَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقُلْتُ هَذَا مَا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

Some meat was presented to the Prophet ﷺ and it had been given to Barira (the freed slave-girl of Aisha) in charity. He said, "This meat is a thing of charity for Barira but it is a gift for us."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِلَحْمٍ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ عَلَيْهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَهُوَ لَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ وَقَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ أَنْبَأَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ سَمِعَ أَنَسًا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ

Some meat was brought to the Prophet ﷺ and it was said that the meat had been given in charity to Barirah. He said, "It was Sadaqa for Barirah but a gift for us."

أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقِيلَ تُصُدِّقَ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ قَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

I intended to buy Barirah but her masters stipulated that her Wala should be for them. When the Prophet was told about it, he said to me, "Buy and manumit her, as the Wala' is for the liberator." Once Barirah was given some meat, and the Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is this?" I said, "It has been given to Barirah in charity." He said, "It is sadaqa for her but a gift for us." Barirah was given the option (to stay with her husband or to part with him). ʿAbdur-Rahman (a sub-narrator) wondered, "Was her husband a slave or a free man?" Shuʿba (another sub-narrator) said, "I asked ʿAbdur-Rahman whether her husband was a slave or a free man. He replied that he did not know whether he was a slave or a free man."

أَنْ تَشْتَرِيَ بَرِيرَةَ وَأَنَّهُمُ اشْتَرَطُوا وَلاَءَهَا فَذُكِرَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اشْتَرِيهَا فَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلاَءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَأُهْدِيَ لَهَا لَحْمٌ فَقِيلَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ هَذَا تُصُدِّقَ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ وَخُيِّرَتْ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ زَوْجُهَا حُرٌّ أَوْ عَبْدٌ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ سَأَلْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ زَوْجِهَا قَالَ لاَ أَدْرِي أَحُرٌّ أَمْ عَبْدٌ

Aisha intended to buy Barira, but her masters stipulated that her wala wound be for them. Aisha mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ who said (to ʿAisha), "Buy and manumit her, for the wala is for the one who manumits." Once some meat was brought to the Prophet ﷺ and was said, "This meat was given in charity to Barira. " The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is an object of charity for Barira and a gift for us." Narrated Adam: Shuʿba related the same Hadith and added: Barira was given the option regarding her husband.

أَنْ يَشْتَرِطُوا الْوَلاَءَ فَذَكَرَتْ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ اشْتَرِيهَا وَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلاَءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقِيلَ إِنَّ هَذَا مَا تُصُدِّقَ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَزَادَ فَخُيِّرَتْ مِنْ زَوْجِهَا

I bought Barira (a female slave). The Prophet ﷺ said (to me), "Buy her as the Wala' is for the manumitted." Once she was given a sheep (in charity). The Prophet ﷺ said, "It (the sheep) is a charitable gift for her (Barira) and a gift for us." Al-Hakam said, "Barira's husband was a free man." Ibn ʿAbbas said, 'When I saw him, he was a slave."

النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اشْتَرِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلاَءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَأُهْدِيَ لَهَا شَاةٌ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ قَالَ الْحَكَمُ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا وَقَوْلُ الْحَكَمِ مُرْسَلٌ وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَأَيْتُهُ عَبْدًا

That is a Sadaqa for her and a gift for us.

أَهْدَتْ بَرِيرَةُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لَحْمًا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

It is a Sadaqa for her and a gift for us.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ وَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِلَحْمِ بَقَرٍ فَقِيلَ هَذَا مَا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

The right of inheritance vests with one who shows favour (who emancipates) and Messenger of Allah (may peacebe upon him) gave her the choice (either to retain) her matrimonial alliance or break it). Her husband was a slave. She (Barira also) gave 'A'isha some meat as gift. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I wish you could prepare (cook) for us out of this meat. 'A'isha said, It has been given as charity to Barira, whereupon he said: That is charity for her and gift for us.

أَنَّهَا اشْتَرَتْ بَرِيرَةَ مِنْ أُنَاسٍ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ وَاشْتَرَطُوا الْوَلاَءَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْوَلاَءُ لِمَنْ وَلِيَ النِّعْمَةَ وَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا عَبْدًا وَأَهْدَتْ لِعَائِشَةَ لَحْمًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوْ صَنَعْتُمْ لَنَا مِنْ هَذَا اللَّحْمِ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

She wanted to buy Barira with a view to emancipating her. They (the sellers) laid down the condition that the right of inheritance would vest (with them). She (Hadrat 'A'isha) made a mention of that to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whereupon he said: Buy her and emancipate her for the right of inheritance vests with one who emancipates. Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given meat as gift. They (his Companions) said to Allah's Apostle ﷺ: This was given as charity to Barira, whereupon he said: That is charity for her but gift for us. And she was given option (to retain her matrimonial alliance or to break it). Abd al-Rahman said: Her husband was a free man. Shu'ba said: I then asked him (one of the narrators) about Barira's husband (whether he had been a free mart or a slave), whereupon he said: I do not know.

أَنْ تَشْتَرِيَ بَرِيرَةَ لِلْعِتْقِ فَاشْتَرَطُوا وَلاَءَهَا فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اشْتَرِيهَا وَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلاَءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَأُهْدِيَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَحْمٌ فَقَالُوا لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ هَذَا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَهُوَ لَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ وَخُيِّرَتْ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا قَالَ شُعْبَةُ ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ زَوْجِهَا فَقَالَ لاَ أَدْرِي

Anas said when some meat was brought to the Prophet ﷺ , he asked What is this? He was told this is a thing (meat), which was given as sadaqah to Barirah. Thereupon, he said it is sadaqah for her and a gift to us.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِلَحْمٍ قَالَ مَا هَذَا قَالُوا شَىْءٌ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

she wanted to buy Barirah and set her free, but they stipulated that her loyally as a freed slave (wala') should be to them. She mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah and he said: "Buy her and set her fee, and loyally is due to the one who frees the slave." She was given the choice when she was freed. Some meat was brought to the Messenger of Allah and it was said: "This is something that is given in charity to Barirah." He said: "It is charity for her and gift for us." And her husband was a free man.

أَنْ تَشْتَرِيَ بَرِيرَةَ فَتَعْتِقَهَا وَأَنَّهُمُ اشْتَرَطُوا وَلاَءَهَا فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اشْتَرِيهَا وَاعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلاَءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَخُيِّرَتْ حِينَ أُعْتِقَتْ وَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقِيلَ هَذَا مِمَّا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا

"Three judgments were established because of Barirah. Her masters wanted to sell her but they stipulated that Al-Wala should still be to them. I mentioned that to the Prophet and he said: 'Buy her and set her free, for Al-Wala, is to the one who sets the slave free.' She was set free and the Messenger of Allah gave her the choice, and she chose herself. And she used to be given charity and she would give some of it as a gift to us. I mentioned that to the Prophet and he said: 'Eat it for it is charity for her and a gift for us.'"

كَانَ فِي بَرِيرَةَ ثَلاَثُ قَضِيَّاتٍ أَرَادَ أَهْلُهَا أَنْ يَبِيعُوهَا وَيَشْتَرِطُوا الْوَلاَءَ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ اشْتَرِيهَا وَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلاَءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَأُعْتِقَتْ فَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَاخْتَارَتْ نَفْسَهَا وَكَانَ يُتَصَدَّقُ عَلَيْهَا فَتُهْدِي لَنَا مِنْهُ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ كُلُوهُ فَإِنَّهُ عَلَيْهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَهُوَ لَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

"Buy her and set her free, for Al-Wala' is to the one who sets the slave free." Some meat was brought and it was said: "This is some of that which was given in charity to Barirah." He said: "It is charity for her and a gift for us." And the Messenger of Allah gave her the choice, and her husband was a free man.

أَنْ تَشْتَرِيَ بَرِيرَةَ فَاشْتَرَطُوا وَلاَءَهَا فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ اشْتَرِيهَا وَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلاَءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَأُتِيَ بِلَحْمٍ فَقِيلَ إِنَّ هَذَا مِمَّا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ وَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا

"Al-Wala' is to the one who did the favor (of setting the slave free)." The Messenger of Allah gave her the choice, as her husband was a slave. And she gave some meat to 'Aishah as a gift, and the Messenger of Allah said: "Why don't you give me some of this meat?" 'Aishah said: "It was given in charity to Barirah." He said: "It is a charity for her, and a gift for us."

أَنَّهَا اشْتَرَتْ بَرِيرَةَ مِنْ أُنَاسٍ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ فَاشْتَرَطُوا الْوَلاَءَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْوَلاَءُ لِمَنْ وَلِيَ النِّعْمَةَ وَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا عَبْدًا وَأَهْدَتْ لِعَائِشَةَ لَحْمًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوْ وَضَعْتُمْ لَنَا مِنْ هَذَا اللَّحْمِ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ عَلَيْهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَهُوَ لَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

"Shu'bah narrated to us, from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Qasim, from his father, from 'Aishah. He (Shu'bah) said: "And he ('Abdur-Rahman) was the executor for his father." He (Shu'bah) said: "I was afraid to say to him: 'Did you hear this from your father.'" -- 'Aishah said: "I asked the Messenger of Allah about Barirah, as I wanted to buy her but it was stipulated that the Wala' would go to her (former) masters. He said: 'Buy her, for the Wala' is to the one who sets the slave free.' And she was given the choice, as her husband was a slave." Then he said, after that: "I do not know." --"And some meat was brought to the Messenger of Allah and they said: 'This is some of that which was given in charity to Barirah.' He said: 'It is charity for her and a gift for us.'"

عَائِشَةُ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ بَرِيرَةَ وَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَشْتَرِيَهَا وَاشْتُرِطَ الْوَلاَءُ لأَهْلِهَا فَقَالَ اشْتَرِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلاَءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ قَالَ وَخُيِّرَتْ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا عَبْدًا ثُمَّ قَالَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ مَا أَدْرِي وَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقَالُوا هَذَا مِمَّا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ قَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

"What is this?" It was said: "It was given in charity to Barirah." He said: "It is charity for her and a gift for us."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِلَحْمٍ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا فَقِيلَ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

"I bought Barirah and her masters stipulated that her loyalty (Wala) should be to them, I mentioned that to the Prophet and he said: 'Set her free, and loyalty belongs to the one who pays the silver.''' She said: "so I set her free. The Messenger of Allah called her and gave her the choice regarding her husband, and she chose herself. Her husband was a free man."

قَالَتِ اشْتَرَيْتُ بَرِيرَةَ فَاشْتَرَطَ أَهْلُهَا وَلاَءَهَا فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلاَءَ لِمَنْ أَعْطَى الْوَرِقَ قَالَتْ فَأَعْتَقْتُهَا قَالَتْ فَدَعَاهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَخَيَّرَهَا مِنْ زَوْجِهَا فَاخْتَارَتْ نَفْسَهَا وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا

she wanted to buy Barirah to set her free, but they stipulated that her loyalty (should be to them. She mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah and the Messenger of Allah said: "Buy her, and wet her free and loyalty (Wala) belongs to the one who sets the slave free." Some meat was brought to the Messenger of and it was said that this had been given in charity to Bariirah. He said: "It is charity for her, and a gift for us." And she was given the choice

أَنْ تَشْتَرِيَ بَرِيرَةَ لِلْعِتْقِ وَأَنَّهُمُ اشْتَرَطُوا وَلاَءَهَا فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اشْتَرِيهَا فَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلاَءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقِيلَ هَذَا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ وَخُيِّرَتْ

أَنْ يَشْتَرِطُوا وَلَاءَهَا فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «اشْتَرِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ» فَاشْتَرَتْهَا فَأَعْتَقَتْهَا وَخَيَّرَهَا مِنْ زَوْجِهَا وَكَانَ حُرًّا وَأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِلَحْمٍ فَقَالَ مِنْ أَيْنَ هَذَا؟ قِيلَ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ «هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ»

[AI] Aisha said, "Would you sell your family?" So she went to her family and mentioned it to them. They said, "Not unless you stipulate that we have her freedom." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Buy her and set her free, for loyalty belongs to the one who sets someone free."

لَهَا عَائِشَةُ أَيَبِيعُكِ أَهْلُكِ؟ فَأَتَتْ أَهْلَهَا فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لَهُمْ فَقَالُوا لَا إِلَّا أَنْ تَشْتَرِطَ لَنَا وَلَاءَهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اشْتَرِيهَا فَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ

"Al-Wala' is to the one who did the favor (of setting the slave free)." The Messenger of Allah gave her the choice, as her husband was a slave. And she gave some meat to 'Aishah as a gift, and the Messenger of Allah said: "Why don't you give me some of this meat?" 'Aishah said: "It was given in charity to Barirah." أَنَّهَا اشْتَرَتْ بَرِيرَةَ مِنْ نَاسٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَاشْتَرَطُوا الْوَلَاءَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ وَلِي النِّعْمَةَ قَالَ وَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا عَبْدًا فَأَهْدَتْ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ لَحْمًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ صَنَعْتُمْ لَنَا مِنْ هَذَا اللَّحْمِ؟ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ عَلَيْهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَهُوَ لَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

"I bought Barirah and her masters stipulated that her Wala' should go to them. I mentioned that to the Prophet and he said: 'Set her free, and Al-Wala' is to the one who pays the silver.' So I set her free and the Messenger of Allah called her and gave her the choice concerning her husband. She said: 'Even if you gave me such and such, I would not stay with him,' so she chose herself and her husband was a free man." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3449)

اشْتَرَيْتُ بَرِيرَةَ فَاشْتَرَطَ أَهْلُهَا وَلَاءَهَا فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اشْتَرِيهَا فَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ أَعْطَى الْوَرِقَ قَالَتْ فَاشْتَرَيْتُهَا فَأَعْتَقْتُهَا قَالَتْ فَدَعَاهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَخَيَّرَهَا مِنْ زَوْجِهَا فَاخْتَارَتْ نَفْسَهَا وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا

She wanted to buy Barira with a view to emancipating her. They (the sellers) laid down the condition that the right of inheritance would vest (with them). She (Hadrat 'A'isha) made a mention of that to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whereupon he said: Buy her and emancipate her for the right of inheritance vests with one who emancipates. Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given meat as gift. They (his Companions) said to Allah's Apostle ﷺ: This was given as charity to Barira, whereupon he said: That is charity for her but gift for us. And she was given option (to retain her matrimonial alliance or to break it). Abd al-Rahman said: Her husband was a free man. Shu'ba said: I then asked him (one of the narrators) about Barira's husband (whether he had been a free mart or a slave), whereupon he said: I do not know. (Using translation from Muslim 1504h)

she wanted to buy Barirah and set her free, but they stipulated that her loyally as a freed slave (wala') should be to them. She mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah and he said: "Buy her and set her fee, and loyally is due to the one who frees the slave." She was given the choice when she was freed. Some meat was brought to the Messenger of Allah and it was said: "This is something that is given in charity to Barirah." He said: "It is charity for her and gift for us." And her husband was a free man. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2614)

أَنْ يَشْتَرِطُوا وَلَاءَهَا فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اشْتَرِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَخَيَّرَهَا مِنْ زَوْجِهَا وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا وَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقِيلَ هَذَا مَا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

"Three judgments were established because of Barirah. Her masters wanted to sell her but they stipulated that Al-Wala should still be to them. I mentioned that to the Prophet and he said: 'Buy her and set her free, for Al-Wala, is to the one who sets the slave free.' She was set free and the Messenger of Allah gave her the choice, and she chose herself. And she used to be given charity and she would give some of it as a gift to us. I mentioned that to the Prophet and he said: 'Eat it for it is charity for her and a gift for us.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3448)

كَانَ فِي بَرِيرَةَ ثَلَاثُ قَضِيَّاتٍ أَرَادَ أَهْلُهَا أَنْ يَبِيعُوهَا وَيَشْتَرِطُوا الْوَلَاءَ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «اشْتَرِيهَا وَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ» وَعَتَقَتْ فَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَاخْتَارَتْ نَفْسَهَا وَكَانَتْ يُتَصَدَّقُ عَلَيْهَا فَتُهْدِي لَنَا مِنْهُ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «كُلُوا فَإِنَّهُ عَلَيْهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَهُوَ لَكُمْ هَدِيَّةٌ»

she wanted to buy Barirah to set her free, but they stipulated that her loyalty (should be to them. She mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah and the Messenger of Allah said: "Buy her, and wet her free and loyalty (Wala) belongs to the one who sets the slave free." Some meat was brought to the Messenger of and it was said that this had been given in charity to Bariirah. He said: "It is charity for her, and a gift for us." And she was given the choice (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4643)

"Buy her and set her free, for Al-Wala' is to the one who sets the slave free." Some meat was brought and it was said: "This is some of that which was given in charity to Barirah." He said: "It is charity for her and a gift for us." And the Messenger of Allah gave her the choice, and her husband was a free man. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3450)

أَنْ تَشْتَرِيَ بَرِيرَةَ فَاشْتَرَطُوا وَلَاءَهَا فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «اشْتَرِيهَا فَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلَاءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ» وَأُتِيَ بِلَحْمٍ فَقِيلَ إِنَّ هَذَا مِمَّا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ «هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ» وَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا

The right of inheritance vests with one who shows favour (who emancipates) and Messenger of Allah (may peacebe upon him) gave her the choice (either to retain) her matrimonial alliance or break it). Her husband was a slave. She (Barira also) gave 'A'isha some meat as gift. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I wish you could prepare (cook) for us out of this meat. 'A'isha said, It has been given as charity to Barira, whereupon he said: That is charity for her and gift for us. (Using translation from Muslim 1504g)

رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ وَلِيَ النِّعْمَةَ» وَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا عَبْدًا وَأَهْدَتْ لِعَائِشَةَ لَحْمًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ وَضَعْتُمْ لَنَا مِنْ هَذَا اللَّحْمِ» فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ «هُوَ عَلَيْهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَهُوَ لَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ»

"Shu'bah narrated to us, from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Qasim, from his father, from 'Aishah. He (Shu'bah) said: "And he ('Abdur-Rahman) was the executor for his father." He (Shu'bah) said: "I was afraid to say to him: 'Did you hear this from your father.'" -- 'Aishah said: "I asked the Messenger of Allah about Barirah, as I wanted to buy her but it was stipulated that the Wala' would go to her (former) masters. He said: 'Buy her, for the Wala' is to the one who sets the slave free.' And she was given the choice, as her husband was a slave." Then he said, after that: "I do not know." --"And some meat was brought to the Messenger of Allah and they said: 'This is some of that which was given in charity to Barirah.' He said: 'It is charity for her and a gift for us.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3454)

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ بَرِيرَةَ وَأَرَدْتُ أَنِ اشْتَرِيَهَا وَاشْتَرِطَ الْوَلَاءَ لِأَهْلِهَا فَقَالَ «اشْتَرِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلَاءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ» قَالَ وَخُيِّرَتْ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا عَبْدًا ثُمَّ قَالَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ مَا أَدْرِي مَا أَدْرِي وَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقَالُوا هَذَا مِمَّا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ قَالَ «هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ»

"I bought Barirah and her masters stipulated that her loyalty (Wala) should be to them, I mentioned that to the Prophet and he said: 'Set her free, and loyalty belongs to the one who pays the silver.''' اشْتَرَيْتُ بَرِيرَةَ فَاشْتَرَطَ أَهْلُهَا وَلَاءَهَا فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «أَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلَاءَ لِمَنْ أَعْطَى الْوَرِقَ» قَالَتْ فَعَتَقْتُهَا

[AI] To buy a female slave for the purpose of setting her free, and they stipulated her loyalty. So she mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Buy her and set her free, for loyalty belongs to the one who sets free."

أَنْ تَشْتَرِيَ بَرِيرَةَ لِلْعِتْقِ وَأَنَّهُمُ اشْتَرَطُوا وَلَاءَهَا فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اشْتَرِيهَا فَأَعْتِقِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلَاءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ»

"What is this?" It was said: "It was given in charity to Barirah." He said: "It is charity for her and a gift for us." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3760)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِلَحْمٍ فَقَالَ «مَا هَذَا؟» فَقِيلَ تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ «هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ»

"Shu'bah narrated to us, from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Qasim, from his father, from 'Aishah. He (Shu'bah) said: "And he ('Abdur-Rahman) was the executor for his father." He (Shu'bah) said: "I was afraid to say to him: 'Did you hear this from your father.'" -- 'Aishah said: "I asked the Messenger of Allah about Barirah, as I wanted to buy her but it was stipulated that the Wala' would go to her (former) masters. سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ بَرِيرَةَ وَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَشْتَرِيَهَا وَأَشْتَرِطَ الْوَلَاءَ لِأَهْلِهَا فَقَالَ «اشْتَرِيهَا فَإِنَّ الْوَلَاءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ» قَالَ وَخُيِّرَتْ وَكَانَ زَوْجِهَا عَبْدًا ثُمَّ قَالَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ مَا أَدْرِي مَا أَدْرِي وَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقَالُوا هَذَا مِمَّا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ قَالَ «هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Spitting in the mosque is a sin, and its expiation is to bury it.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْبُزَاقُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ خَطِيئَةٌ وَكَفَّارَتُهَا دَفْنُهَا

[AI] What did the Prophet ﷺ say? He said that a Muslim, when he spends on his family and intends it as an act of charity, it becomes a charity for him.

أَعَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ الْمُسْلِمَ إِذَا أَنْفَقَ نَفَقَةً عَلَى أَهْلِهِ وَهُوَ يَحْتَسِبُهَا كَانَتْ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ

[AI] Allah ﷺ said, "The privilege belongs to those who have been blessed." She said, "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chose her and married her to a servant, and she gave Aisha meat as a gift." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is charity for her, and it is a gift for us."

اللهِ ﷺ الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ وَلِيَ النِّعْمَةَ قَالَتْ وَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ زَوَّجَهَا عَبْدًا وَأَهْدَتْ لِعَائِشَةَ ؓ لَحْمًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هُوَ عَلَيْهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَهُوَ لَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given meat, so it was said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is from what you give as charity to Barirah." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is a charity for her, and for us it is a gift."

أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا مِمَّا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ

[AI] "Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ was brought some meat, so he asked, 'What is this?' They said, 'This is given to us as charity.' He said, 'It is a gift for us and there is also charity on it.' Al-Bukhari said, and Abu Dawood also said, mentioning and narrating it from another perspective, from Shu'bah."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِلَحْمٍ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا؟ قَالَ هَذَا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ هُوَ لَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ وَعَلَيْهَا صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ الْبُخَارِيُّ وَقَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ فَذَكَرَهُ وَأَخْرَجَاهُ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Loyalty is to be given to the one who granted the favor." She said, and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , chose her and her husband was a servant.

رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ وَلِيَ النِّعْمَةَ قَالَتْ وَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا عَبْدًا

[AI] Buy it, for loyalty is only for those who set it free and choose it from their spouse. So she chose herself and her husband was free. And the Prophet ﷺ was given meat, and it was said: "This is from what you give in charity to Barirah". He said: "It is for her a charity, and for us a gift." This is how Abu Dawood Al-Tayalisi included it, and some narrators from Shu'bah in the hadith. And some of them attributed it to Ibrahim and some to Al-Hakam.

اشْتَرِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ وَخَيَّرَهَا مِنْ زَوْجِهَا فَاخْتَارَتْ نَفْسَهَا وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا وَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقِيلَ هَذَا مِمَّا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ قَالَ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ هَكَذَا أَدْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ وَبَعْضُ الرُّوَاةِ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ وَقَدْ جَعَلَهُ بَعْضُهُمْ مِنْ قَوْلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَعْضُهُمْ مِنْ قَوْلِ الْحَكَمِ

[AI] Aisha said, "That belonged to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Buy it, for loyalty belongs to the one who emancipates.' Aisha said, 'And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given some meat, so I said, 'This is something that can be given as charity to Barira.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'It is a gift for her, and we have a gift too.' Al-Hakam said, 'Ibrahim, her husband, was a free man, and she was given the choice between him and her husband.'"

عَائِشَةُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اشْتَرِيهَا فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ ؓ وَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِلَحْمٍ فَقُلْتُ هَذَا مِمَّا تُصُدِّقَ بِهِ عَلَى بَرِيرَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هُوَ لَهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَنَا هَدِيَّةٌ قَالَ الْحَكَمُ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا فَخُيِّرَتْ مِنْ زَوْجِهَا
