I bought Barirah but her masters put the condition that her Wala' would be for them. I told the Prophet ﷺ about it. He said (to me), "Manumit (free) her as her Wala' will be for the one who pays the price." So, I manumitted (freed) her. The Prophet ﷺ called Barirah and gave her the option of either staying with her husband or leaving him. She said, "Even if he gave me so much money, I would not stay with him," and so she preferred her freedom to her husband.

[Machine] Bareerah's husband was a free man. When she was freed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her the choice to either stay with him or leave. She chose herself and said that her family wanted to sell her and demand loyalty. She mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ , and he said to buy her and free her, as loyalty belongs to the one who sets free.

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) said: There were three issues which were clarified in case of Barira: her owners had decided to sell her on the condition that the right of her inheritance would vest with them. She ('A'isha) said: I made a mention of that to Allah's Apostle ﷺ and he said: Buy her and emancipate her, for verily the right of inheritance vests with one who emancipates. She said that she emancipated (her) and Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her the option (either to retain her matrimonial alliance or break it after emancipation). She (taking advantage of the option) opted for herself (the severing of matrimonial alliance). 'A'isha said: The people used to give her charity and she gave us that as gift. I made a mention of it to Allah's Apostle ﷺ, whereupon he said: That is charity for her but gift for you, so take that. (Using translation from Muslim 1504f)
