Taking money from a miser husband
Hind b. Utba said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Abu Sufyan is a miser and he does not give me what is sufficient for me and my children. Can I take of his property without his knowledge?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Take what is sufficient for you and your children, and the amount should be just and reasonable.
أَنَّ هِنْدَ بِنْتَ عُتْبَةَ قَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ وَلَيْسَ يُعْطِينِي مَا يَكْفِينِي وَوَلَدِي إِلاَّ مَا أَخَذْتُ مِنْهُ وَهْوَ لاَ يَعْلَمُ، فَقَالَ: «خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَوَلَدَكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ۔»
Hind (bint ʿUtba) said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Abu Sufyan is a miser. Is there any harm if I take of his property what will cover me and my children's needs?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Take (according to your needs) in a reasonable manner."
هِنْدُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ فَهَلْ عَلَىَّ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ آخُذَ مِنْ مَالِهِ مَا يَكْفِينِي وَبَنِيَّ قَالَ خُذِي بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
Hind (bint ʿUtba) said to the Prophet ﷺ "Abu Sufyan is a miserly man and I need to take some money of his wealth." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Take reasonably what is sufficient for you and your children "
لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ فَأَحْتَاجُ أَنْ آخُذَ مِنْ مَالِهِ قَالَ خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَوَلَدَكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
Hind. the daughter of 'Utba, wife of Abu Sufyan, came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Abu Sufyan is a miserly person. He does not give adequate maintenance for me and my children, but (I am constrained) to take from his wealth (some part of it) without his knowledge. Is there any sin for me? Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Take from his property what is customary which may suffice you and your children.
دَخَلَتْ هِنْدٌ بِنْتُ عُتْبَةَ امْرَأَةُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ لاَ يُعْطِينِي مِنَ النَّفَقَةِ مَا يَكْفِينِي وَيَكْفِي بَنِيَّ إِلاَّ مَا أَخَذْتُ مِنْ مَالِهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمِهِ فَهَلْ عَلَىَّ فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ جُنَاحٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ خُذِي مِنْ مَالِهِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَيَكْفِي بَنِيكِ
Hind, the mother of Mu'awiyah, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'Abu Sufyan is a stingy person. He does not give me as much (money) as suffices me and my children. Is there any harm to me if I take something from his property ? He said: Take as much as suffices you and your children according to the custom.
أَنَّ هِنْدًا أُمَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ وَإِنَّهُ لاَ يُعْطِينِي مَا يَكْفِينِي وَبَنِيَّ فَهَلْ عَلَىَّ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ آخُذَ مِنْ مَالِهِ شَيْئًا قَالَ خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَبَنِيكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
"Hind came to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and said : 'O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man who does not spend enough on my child and I. Can I take from his wealth without him realizing?' He said: 'Take what is sufficient for you and your child on a reasonable basis.'"
جَاءَتْ هِنْدٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ وَلاَ يُنْفِقُ عَلَىَّ وَوَلَدِي مَا يَكْفِينِي أَفَآخُذُ مِنْ مَالِهِ وَلاَ يَشْعُرُ قَالَ خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَوَلَدَكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ

[AI] Hind, the mother of Muawiya and the wife of Abu Sufyan, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man and does not provide me and my children with enough. I only take from him what I can take, and he does not know. Is there any blame on me regarding this?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Take what is sufficient for you and your children in a manner that is acceptable."
أَنَّ هِنْدًا أُمَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ امْرَأَةَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ أَتَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ وَإِنَّهُ لَا يُعْطِينِي مَا يَكْفِينِي وَبَنِيَّ إِلَّا مَا أَخَذْتُ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ لَا يَعْلَمُ فَهَلْ عَلَيَّ فِي ذَلِكَ جُنَاحٌ؟ فَقَالَ «خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَوَلَدَكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ»
[AI] "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man and I have nothing except what enters my house." He said, "Take what is sufficient for you and your children with goodness."

[AI] Hind said to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), "Indeed, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man and I only have what he provides for me." He (the Prophet) said, "Take what is sufficient for you and your child with what is good."
قَالَتْ هِنْدٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ وَلَيْسَ لِي إِلَّا مَا يُدْخِلُ عَلَيَّ قَالَ «خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَوَلَدَكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ»
ذِكْرُ الْإِبَاحَةِ لِلْمَرْأَةِ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ مِنْ مَالِ زَوْجِهَا لِعِيَالِهِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ مِنْ غَيْرِ عِلْمِهِ
[AI] Hind came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Verily, Abu Sufyan is restraining me and my children. Can I take some of his wealth without him knowing?" He replied, "Take from his wealth what is reasonable, and he will not know."
جَاءَتْ هِنْدٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ مُضَيِّقٌ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَى وَلَدِي أَفَآخُذُ مِنْ مَالِهِ وَهُوَ لَا يَشْعُرُ؟ قَالَ «خُذِي مِنْ مَالِهِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَهُوَ لَا يَشْعُرُ»
[AI] Abdullah bin Maslamah Al-Qa'nabi narrated to me that his father, Hisham bin 'Urwah, narrated from his father, from Aisha who said: Hind, the mother of Muawiya, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Abu Sufyan is a stingy man and does not give me enough to suffice me and my children, except for what I take from him without his knowledge. Is there any harm for me in that? So the Prophet ﷺ said to her: "Take that which is sufficient for you and your children in a manner that is reasonable."
ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ جَاءَتْ هِنْدٌ أُمُّ مُعَاوِيَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ وَلَا يُعْطِينِي مَا يَكْفِينِي وَوَلَدِي إِلَّا مَا أَخَذْتُ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ لَا يَعْلَمُ فَهَلْ عَلَيَّ فِي ذَلِكَ حَرَجٌ؟ فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَبَنِيكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ»
[AI] Hind, the mother of Mu'awiyah, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man and he only gives my children what I take from him, and he does not know about it. Do I have any right in this matter?" The Prophet ﷺ said to her, "Take what is sufficient for you and your children with kindness."

[AI] Indeed, my husband, Abu Sufyan, is a tight-fisted and stingy man who does not give me enough and my children. Shall I take from his wealth without his knowledge? So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Take what is sufficient for you and your children with kindness."
إِنَّ زَوْجِي أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ مُمْسِكٌ شَحِيحٌ لَا يُعْطِينِي مَا يَكْفِينِي وَبَنِيَّ أَفَآخُذُ مِنْ مَالِهِ وَهُوَ لَا يَعْلَمُ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَبَنِيكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ»

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ فَهَلْ عَلَيَّ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ آخُذَ مِنْ مَالِهِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَوَلَدَكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
[AI] Hind the mother of Muawiyah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and she said, "Indeed, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man and he does not give me and my children enough except what I have taken from him without his knowledge. So, am I entitled to anything in this matter?" The Prophet ﷺ said to her, "Take what is sufficient for you and your children according to what is right." This is the wording of the hadith narrated by Abdul Aziz.

لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ أَعَلَيَّ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ آخُذَ مِنْ مَالِهِ سِرًّا؟ قَالَ خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَوَلَدَكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
"جَاءَتْ هِنْدٌ أُمُّ مُعَاوِيَةَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ، وَإِنَّهُ لَا يُعْطِينِي وَوَلَدِي إِلَّا مَا أَخَذْتُ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ لَا يَعْلَمُ، فَهَلْ عَلَيَّ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْءٌ؟ قَالَ: خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَبَنِيكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ".
