The ablution water was brought to the Messenger ﷺ and he performed ablution; he washed his hands up to wrists three times, then washed his forearms three times. He then rinsed his mouth and snuffed up water three times; then he wiped his head and ears inside and outside.

أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ ظَاهِرِهِمَا وَبَاطِنِهِمَا

"I saw Ali performing Wudu. He washed his hands until he cleaned them, then he rinsed out his mouth three times, sniffed water into his nose and blew it out three times, washed his face three times, and his forearms three times. He wiped his head once, then he washed his feet up to the ankles. Then he stood up, taking what was left over from his purification (water) and drank it while he was standing. Then he said, 'I wanted to show you how Messenger of Allah purified himself.'"

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ حَتَّى أَنْقَاهُمَا ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ ثَلاَثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ مَرَّةً ثُمَّ غَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَخَذَ فَضْلَ طَهُورِهِ فَشَرِبَهُ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أُرِيَكُمْ كَيْفَ كَانَ طُهُورُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ

"I saw 'Ali perform Wudu'. He washed his hands until they looked clean, then he rinsed his mouth three times and his nose three times, and he washed each forearm three times. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his feet up to the ankles. Then he stood up, took the left over water for his Wudu' and drank from it while standing. Then he said: 'I wanted to show you how the Prophet ﷺ performed Wudu'.'"

I saw 'Ali performing Wudu'. He washed his hands three times, and rinsed his mouth three times and his nose three times, and he washed his face three times and each forearm three times. Then he wiped his head and washed each foot three times. Then he said: 'This is the Wudu' of the Prophet ﷺ.'"

I entered upon Ibn Darah, the freed slave of ʿUthman, and he heard me rinsing my mouth. He said: O Muhammad! I said: Here I am. He said:Shall I not tell you about the wudoo’ of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I saw ʿUthman when he was in al-Maqaʿid. He called for water for wudoo’, then he rinsed his mouth three times, rinsed his nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his arms three times, wiped his head three times and washed his feet, then he said: Whoever would like to see how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudoo’, this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ.

عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ وَهُوَ بِالْمَقَاعِدِ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَهَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do wudoo’: he washed his face three times and his hands three times, and he washed his arms three times each, and wiped his head, and washed his feet thoroughly.

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًاوَيَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ غَسْلًا

I was standing with ‘Uthman bin ʿAffan ؓ and he said: Shall I not tell you how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ? We said: Yes indeed. He called for water and washed his face three times, rinsed his mouth and nose three times, then he washed his hands up to the elbow three times, then he wiped his head and his ears, and washed his feet three times. Then he said: This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ.

أَلا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ كَيْفَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأُ؟ قُلْنَا بَلَى فَدَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى مِرْفَقَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأُ

Some water for wudoo’ was brought to ʿAli ؓ . He rinsed his mouth and nose three times, and washed his face three times, and washed his hands and forearms three times. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his feet. Then he said: This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do wudoo’. Then he recited some Qurʿan. Then he said: This is for the one who is not junub; as for the one who is junub, no - (he should not recite), not even one verse.

I saw ‘Ali ؓ doing wudooʿ. He washed his hands until they were clean, then he rinsed his mouth three times, then he rinsed his nose three times; he washed his face three times and his forearms three times; he wiped his head and washed his feet up to the ankles. And he took the leftover water and drank it whilst standing. Then he said: I wanted to show you how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ ‘Abd Khair narrated a hadeeth like that of Abu Hayyah from ʿAli, except that ’Abd Khair said: When he finished his wudoo’, he took some of the leftover water in his hand and drank it.

I saw ‘Ali urinate in ar-Rahbah. (Then) he called for water and did wudoo’. He washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth and nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his forearms three times each, wiped his head and washed his feet three times each. Then he stood up and drank from the leftover water, then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do what you have seen me do, and I wanted to show it to you.

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا بَالَ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ وَدَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَشَرِبَ مِنْ فَضْلِ وَضُوئِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ كَالَّذِي رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أُرِيَكُمُوهُ

I saw ‘Ali ؓ urinate in ar-Rahbah, then he called for water and did wudoo’. He washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth and nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his forearms three times each, wiped his head and washed his feet three times each. Then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do as you have seen me do.

I saw ‘Ali ؓ do wudoo’. He washed his hands thoroughly, then he washed his face three times and his forearms three times; then he wiped his head, then he washed his feet up to the ankles, Then he stood up and drank the leftover wudoo’ water. Then he said: I wanted to show you the wudoo’ of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .

‘Ali ؓ said: Shall I not show you how the Prophet ﷺ of Allah used to do wudooʿ? We said: Yes indeed. He said: Bring me a large vessel and a small vessel of water. He washed his hands three times; took water into his nose three times and blew it out three times; and he washed his face three times; he washed his arms up to the elbows three times; he wiped his head three times; and he washed his feet three times.

أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ دَعَا بِفُخَّارَةِ مَاءٍ فِي مَوْضِعِ الْجَنَائِزِ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ ظَاهِرِهِمَا وَبَاطِنِهِمَا مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ نَبِيَّكُمْ ﷺ فَعَلَ هَذَا وَلَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى ابْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ عَنْ حُمْرَانَ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ إِلَّا هَذَيْنِ الْحَدِيثَيْنِ

قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ يُقْبِلُ بِيَدَيْهِ مِنْ مُقَدِّمِهِ إِلَى مُؤَخَّرِهِ وَمِنْ مُؤَخَّرِهِ إِلَى مُقَدِّمِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَخَلِّلْ بَيْنَ أَصَابِعِ رِجْلِهِ وَخَلِّلْ لِحْيَتَهُ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُهُ يُرْوَى عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ إِلَّا مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ وَبَكَّارُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ لَيْسَ بِهِ بَأْسٌ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ صَالِحُ الْحَدِيثِ قَدْ تَقَدَّمَ ذِكْرُنَا لَهُ

[AI] Regarding the ablution of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , she said, "Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to come to us and visit us, and he would perform ablution with this container and with a similar container, which was about a Mudd in size. He said:Shall I not tell you about the wudoo’ of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I saw ʿUthman when he was in al-Maqaʿid. He called for water for wudoo’, then he rinsed his mouth three times, rinsed his nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his arms three times, wiped his head three times and washed his feet, then he said: Whoever would like to see how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudoo’, this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ. عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ وَهُوَ بِالْمَقَاعِدِ فَدَعَا بِإِنَاءٍ فَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ قَدْمَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلْيَنْظُرْ إِلَى وُضُوئِي هَذَا وَقَدْ ذَكَرَ غَيْرُهُ التَّثْلِيثَ فِي الْقَدْمَيْنِ أَيْضًا

" عن رجلٍ من الأنصارِ أن عثمانَ قالَ: ألا أُرِيكُمْ كيفَ كانَ وضوءُ رسولِ الله ﷺ ؟ قَالوا: بَلَى، فدعَا بماءٍ فمضمضَ ثلاثًا، واستنشقَ ثلاثًا، وغَسَلَ وجهَهُ ثلاثًا، وذِرَاعَيْهِ ثلاثًا ثلاثًا، ومسحَ برأسِهِ، وغسلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثم قالَ: واعْلمُوا أن الأُذُنَيْنِ مِنَ الرأسِ، ثم قالَ: تحرَّيْتُ -أَوْ تَوَخَّيْتُ- لَكُمْ وضوءَ رسولِ الله ﷺ ".

" عن أبى وائلٍ قال: رأيتُ عثمانَ بن عفانَ توضأَ فغسل كفَّيهِ ثلاثًا، ومضمضَ واستنشقَ ثلاثًا ثلاثًا، وغسلَ وجههُ ثلاثًا، وذراعَيْهِ ثلاثًا، ثم مسحَ برأسِه وأُذُنَيْه ظَاهِرِ همَا وبَاطِنِهِمَا، وغسلَ قدميهِ ثلاثًا، وخلَّل أَصابِعَهُ، وخلَّلَ لحيْتَهُ حين غسلَ وجْهَهُ قبلَ أن يغسلَ قدمَيْهِ، ثم قالَ: رأيتُ رسولَ الله ﷺ يفعلُ كالذِى رَأَيْتُمُونِى فَعَلتُ ".

" عَن ابْنِ دَارَةَ قَالَ: رَأيْتُ عُثْمَانَ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَمَضْمَن ثَلاَثًا، وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا، وَغَسَل وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا، وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأسِهِ ثَلاَثًا، وغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَنْ أَحَبَّ أنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ فَهَذَا وضُوءُ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ ".

"عَنْ شَقِيقِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ: رَأيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ غَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا، وَمَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ فَعَلَ هَذَا".

"عن حمران قال: رأيت عثمان توضأ فغسل يديه ثلاثًا، وغسل وجهه ثلاثًا، وغسل ذراعيه ثلاثًا، ومسح رأسه ثلاثًا، ثم غسل قدميه ثلاثًا، ثم قال: رأيت رسول الله ﷺ فتوضأ هكذا وقال: من توضأ دون هذا كفاه".

"عَنْ عَبدِ الله بنِ جَعْفَر، عَنْ عُثْمانَ بنِ عَفَّانَ أَنَّه تَوَضَّأ فَغَسَل يَدَيْه ثَلاثًا، كُلَّ وَاحِدَة مِنْهُما، وَاسْتَنثَر ثَلاثًا، ومَضْمَضَ ثَلاثًا، وَغَسلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وغَسَلَ ذِرَاعيْهِ كُلَّ واحدٍ مِنهُما ثَلاثًا ثلاثًا، وَمَسَح بِرَأسِه ثَلاثًا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا، كُل وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْهُمَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسولَ الله ﷺ يَتَوَضأ هَكَذَا".

"عَنْ شَقِيقِ بنِ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ عُثَمانَ تَوَضَّأ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسَتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا، وَغسَل وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وَخَلَّلَ لِحْيَتَه ثَلاثًا، وَغَسَل ذِرَاعَيْه ثَلاثا ثَلاثا، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأسِه ثَلاثا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْه ثَلاثًا ثلاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسولَ الله ﷺ فَعَلَ هَذَا".

" عنَ أَبِى حَيَّةَ قالَ: رَأيْتُ عَليّا تَوَضَّأ فَغَسَل كَفَّيْه ثَلاثًا، وَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشقَ ثَلاثًا، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَه ثَلاثًا، وذِرَاعَيْه ثَلاثًا، وَمَسَح بِرأسهِ، ثمَّ غَسَلَ قَدَمَيْه إلَى الكَعْبَين ثَلاثًا، ثُم قَام فَشَرِبَ فَضْلَ وَضُوئهِ قَائما، ثُم قَالَ: إنِّى رَأَيتُ رسُولَ الله ﷺ فَعَل كالَّذِى رَأيْتُمونِى فَعَلْتُ فأَحْبَبْتُ أنْ أُرِيَكُمْ ".

"عن عبد خير، عن عَلِىٍّ: أَنَّهُ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا، وَمَضْمَضَ، وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا، وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وَذِراَعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأسِهِ ثَلاَثًا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَنْ أَحَبَّ أنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ كَامِلًا فَليَنْظُرْ إِلَى هَذَا".

"تَوَضَّأ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثًا وَتَمَضْمَضَ، وَاسْتَنشَقَ ثَلاَثًا، وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وَذرَاعَيْه ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا، وَمَسَحَ رَأسَهُ، وَمَسَحَ ظَاهِرَ أُذُنَيْه وَبَاطِنَهُمَا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْه ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا، وَقَالَ: هَذَا الوُضُوءُ، مَنْ زَاد أَوْ نَقَصَ، فَقَدْ ظَلَمَ وأسَاءَ".
