Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn az- Zubayr from Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari that he heard Umar ibn al- Khattab say, while he was teaching people the tashahhud from the mimbar, "Say, Greetings belong to Allah. Pure actions belong to Allah. Good words and prayers belong to Allah. Peace on you, Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and on the slaves of Allah who are salihun. I testify that there is no god except Allah. And I testify that Muhammad is His slave and His messenger." 'At-tahiyatu lillah, az-zakiyatu lillah, at-tayibatu wa's-salawatu lillah. As-salamu alayka ayyuha'nnabiyyu wa rahmatu'llahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu alayna wa ala ibadi'llahi s-salihin. Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa 'llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh."

وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يُعَلِّمُ النَّاسَ التَّشَهُّدَ يَقُولُ قُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ الزَّاكِيَاتُ لِلَّهِ الطَّيِّبَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ لِلَّهِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to say the tashahhud saying, "In the name of Allah. Greetings belong to Allah. Prayers belong to Allah. Pure actions belong to Allah. Peace be on the Prophet and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be on us and on the slaves of Allah who are salihun. I testify that there is no god except Allah. I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." "Bismillah, at-tahiyatu lillah, as-salawatu lillah, az-zakiyatu lillah. As-salamu ala'n-nabiyyi wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu alayna wa ala ibadi'llahi's-salihin. Shahidtu an la ilaha illallah. Shahidtu anna Muhammadu'r-rasulu'llah." He used to say this after the first two rakas and he would make supplication with whatever seemed fit to him when the tashahhud was completed. When he sat at the end of the prayer, he did the tashahhud in a similar manner, except that after the tashahhud he made supplication with whatever seemed fit to him. When he had completed the tashahhud and intended to say the taslim, he said, "Peace be on the Prophet and His mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and on the slaves of Allah who are salihun." "As- salamu ala'n-nabiyyi wa rahmatu'llahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu alayna wa ala ibadi'llahi'ssalihin ." He then said, "Peace be upon you" to his right, and would return the greeting to the imam, and if anyone said "Peace be upon you" from his left he would return the greeting to him.

أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَتَشَهَّدُ فَيَقُولُ بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ الصَّلَوَاتُ لِلَّهِ الزَّاكِيَاتُ لِلَّهِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ شَهِدْتُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ شَهِدْتُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ هَذَا فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الأُولَيَيْنِ وَيَدْعُو إِذَا قَضَى تَشَهُّدَهُ بِمَا بَدَا لَهُ فَإِذَا جَلَسَ فِي آخِرِ صَلاَتِهِ تَشَهَّدَ كَذَلِكَ أَيْضًا إِلاَّ أَنَّهُ يُقَدِّمُ التَّشَهُّدَ ثُمَّ يَدْعُو بِمَا بَدَا لَهُ فَإِذَا قَضَى تَشَهُّدَهُ وَأَرَادَ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ قَالَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ثُمَّ يَرُدُّ عَلَى الإِمَامِ فَإِنْ سَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ رَدَّ عَلَيْهِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said al-Ansari that al-Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad told him that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ used to say in the tashahhud, "Greetings, good words, prayers, pure actions belong to Allah. I testify that there is no god except Allah, alone without partner, and I testify that Muhammad is the slave of Allah and His Messenger. Peace be upon you, Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and on the slaves of Allah who are salihun . Peace be upon you . " "At-tahiyatu, at-tayibatu, as- salawatu, az-zakiyatu lillah. Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa'llah, wahdahu la sharika llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu. As- salamu alayka ayyuha-n-nabiyyu wa rahmatu-llahi wa barakatuhu. As- salamu alayna wa ala ibadi-llahi's-salihin. As-salamu alaykum."

إِذَا تَشَهَّدَتِ التَّحِيَّاتُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ الزَّاكِيَاتُ لِلَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ

The Messenger of Allah( may peace be upon him) used to teach us the tashahhud as he would teach us the Qur’an, and would say: The blessed adoration of the tongue, acts of worship (and) all good things are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is Allah’s apostle (peace be upon him). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 974)

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عُلِّمَ فَوَاتِحَ الْخَيْرِ وَجَوَامِعَهُ أَوْ جَوَامِعَ الْخَيْرِ وَفَوَاتِحَهُ وَإِنَّا كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ فِي صَلَاتِنَا حَتَّى عُلِّمْنَا فَقَالَ قُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

when we (prayed and) sat up during prayer along the Messenger of Allah (may peach be upon him), we said: “Peace be to Allah before it is supplicated for His servants; peace be to so and so. “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not say “Peace be to Allah ,”for Allah Himself is peace. When one of you sits(during the prayer), he should say: The adoration of the tongue are due to Allah, and acts of worship and all good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants. When you say that, it reaches every upright servant in heavens and earth or between heavens and earth. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and apostle. Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him and offer it. كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الرَّجُلُ مِنَّا فِي صَلَاتِهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ يَخُصُّ فَقَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا قَعَدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَلْيَقُلْ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَإِذَا قُلْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ سَلَّمْتُمْ عَلَى كُلِّ عَبْدٍ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَإِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ يَتَخَيَّرُ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ مَا شَاءَ أَوْ مَا أَحَبَّ

كُنَّا إِذَا جَلَسْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الصَّلَاةِ قُلْنَا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ قَبْلَ عِبَادِهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ فَسَمِعَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا جَلَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَقُلْ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَإِذَا قَالَهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ يَتَخَيَّرُ بَعْدُ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ مَا شَاءَ

[Machine] He took his hand and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the hand of Abdullah and taught him the tashahhud in prayer. He said, "Say: Greetings, prayers, and good deeds belong to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah." Zuheir said, "I have memorized from him that, if Allah wills, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger." He said, "If you have finished this, or he said, 'If you have done this,' then you have completed your prayer. If you wish to stand, then stand, and if you wish to sit, then sit."

أَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ وَأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَعَلَّمَهُ التَّشَهُّدَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ قُلْ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِوَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ حَفِظْتُ عَنْهُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ قَالَ فَإِذَا قَضَيْتَ هَذَا أَوْ قَالَ فَإِذَا فَعَلْتَ هَذَا فَقَدْ قَضَيْتَ صَلَاتَكَ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَقُومَ فَقُمْ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَقْعُدَ فَاقْعُدْ

[Machine] "We used to not know what we are saying in prayer. We used to say 'Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Gabriel, peace be upon Michael.' The Prophet ﷺ taught us and said, 'Indeed, Allah is the Peace. So when you sit in tashahhud, say the greetings to Allah, the prayers, and the good words. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.' Abu Wa'il said in his narration from Abdullah, who narrated from the Prophet ﷺ, 'When you say it, every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth is affected.' Abu Ishaq also said in his narration from Abdullah, who narrated from the Prophet ﷺ, 'When you say it, it reaches every near angel, or sent prophet, or righteous servant. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.'"

كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ نَقُولُالسَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ قَالَ فَعَلَّمَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا جَلَسْتُمْ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ قَالَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِذَا قُلْتَهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَفِي الْأَرْضِ وَقَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ فِي حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِذَا قُلْتَهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ مَلَكٍ مُقَرَّبٍ أَوْ نَبِيٍّ مُرْسَلٍ أَوْ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

The adoration of the tongue are due to Allah, and acts of worship, all good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Ibn ‘Umar said: I added: “And Allah’s blessings, peace be upon us, and upon Allah’s upright servants. I testify that there is not god but Allah. “Ibn ‘Umar said: I added to it: He is alone, no one is His associate, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and His Apostle. كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْنَا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللَّهِ قَبْلَ عِبَادِهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى إِسْرَافِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ وَفُلَانٍ قَالَ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا جَلَسْتُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَإِنَّكُمْ إِذَا قُلْتُمُوهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ لِيَتَخَيَّرْ مَا شَاءَ

[Machine] "And indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the hand of Abdullah and taught him the Tashahhud in prayer, which is: 'All greetings, prayers, and good deeds are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.' Zuhayr said, 'I think he said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.' He hesitated in these two statements; if you do this or finish it, then you have completed your prayer. If you wish to stand, then stand, and if you wish to sit, then sit."

وَأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَعَلَّمَهُ التَّشَهُّدَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ» قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ أُرَاهُ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَيْضًا شَكَّ فِي هَاتَيْنِ الْكَلِمَتَيْنِ إِذَا فَعَلْتَ هَذَا أَوْ قَضَيْتَ فَقَدْ قَضَيْتَ صَلَاتَكَ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَقُومَ فَقُمْ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَقْعُدَ فَاقْعُدْ

The Messenger of Allah( may peace be upon him) used to teach us the tashahhud as he would teach us the Qur’an, and would say: The blessed adoration of the tongue, acts of worship (and) all good things are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is Allah’s apostle (peace be upon him). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 974)

يُعَلِّمُ النَّاسَ التَّشَهُّدَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَيَقُولُ «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ الزَّاكِيَاتُ لِلَّهِ الطَّيِّبَاتُ لِلَّهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»

[Machine] Abdullah ibn Salama Al-Qa'nabi reported that Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated from Hisham ibn Uruwah, from his father, that Umar ibn al-Khattab used to teach the people how to recite the Tashahhud in prayer while delivering a sermon on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He would say, "When one of you recites Tashahhud in prayer, let them say: 'In the name of Allah, the most beneficial, the most merciful. All pure prayers, good greetings and pure acts of worship to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that there is no God but Allah alone, without any partners, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.' Umar said, 'Begin with yourselves after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and send peace upon the righteous slaves of Allah.'"

ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ كَانَ يُعَلِّمُ النَّاسَ التَّشَهُّدَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَيَقُولُ إِذَا تَشَهَّدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَيْرِ الْأَسْمَاءِ التَّحِيَّاتُ الزَّاكِيَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ لِلَّهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ قَالَ عُمَرُ «ابْدَءُوا بِأَنْفُسِكُمْ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَسَلِّمُوا عَلَى عَبَّادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ»

when we (prayed and) sat up during prayer along the Messenger of Allah (may peach be upon him), we said: “Peace be to Allah before it is supplicated for His servants; peace be to so and so. “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not say “Peace be to Allah ,”for Allah Himself is peace. When one of you sits(during the prayer), he should say: The adoration of the tongue are due to Allah, and acts of worship and all good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants. When you say that, it reaches every upright servant in heavens and earth or between heavens and earth. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and apostle. Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him and offer it. The adoration of the tongue are due to Allah, and acts of worship, all good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Ibn ‘Umar said: I added: “And Allah’s blessings, peace be upon us, and upon Allah’s upright servants. I testify that there is not god but Allah. “Ibn ‘Umar said: I added to it: He is alone, no one is His associate, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and His Apostle. النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «لَا تَقُولُوا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللَّهِ؛ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ وَأَمَرَهُمْ بِالتَّشَهُّدِ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»

[Machine] We did not know what to say in prayer, so we used to say "Peace be upon Gabriel, peace be upon Michael." Then the Prophet ﷺ taught us and said, "Verily, Allah is As-Salam (the Peace). So when you sit for the two prostrations, say: 'All compliments, prayers, and good words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.' Abu Wail said in his narration that Abdullah said: "When I said it, every close angel, sent prophet, and righteous servant was covered." I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger."

كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ نَقُولُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ فَعَلَّمَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا جَلَسْتُمْ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ قَالَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِذَا قُلْتُهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ مَلَكٍ مُقَرَّبٍ وَنَبِيٍّ مُرْسَلٍ وَعَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»

"We used not to know what we should say in each rak'ah apart from glorifying, magnifying and praising our Lord. But Muhammad ﷺ taught us everything about what is good. He said: "When you sit following every two rak'ahs, then say: At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger), then choose any supplication that you like and call upon Allah the Mighty and Sublime with it.'" كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ إِلَّا أَنْ نُسَبِّحَ وَنُكَبِّرَ وَنُحَمِّدَ رَبَّنَا وَإِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ عُلِّمَ فَوَاتِحَ الْخَيْرِ وَخَوَاتِمَهُ أَوْ قَالَ جَوَامِعَهُ وَإِنَّهُ قَالَ لَنَا «إِذَا قَعَدْتُمْ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ لِيَتَخَيَّرْ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ مَا أَعْجَبَهُ فَلْيَدْعُ بِهِ رَبَّهُ»

كُنَّا إِذَا جَلَسْنَا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْنَا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللَّهِ قَبْلَ عِبَادِهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ وَفُلَانٍ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا جَلَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَكُنْ مِنْ أَوَّلِ قَوْلِهِ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَإِذَا قَالَهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ يَتَخَيَّرْ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ مَا أَحَبَّ»

[Machine] "We used to not know what to say in prayer until the Prophet ﷺ taught us to say, 'Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il.' Then he taught us to say, 'The greetings are for Allah, and the prayers and good deeds. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.' Abu Wail reported in his hadith from Abdullah that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'When you say it, it reaches every righteous servant in the heavens and on the earth.' And Abu Ishaq reported in his hadith from Abdullah that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'When you say it, it reaches every near and distant servant, prophetic messenger, or righteous servant. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.'"

كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ نَقُولُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللَّهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ فَعَلَّمَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا جَلَسْتُمْ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ قَالَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِذَا قُلْتَهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَقَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ فِي حَدِيثِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِذَا قُلْتَهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ مُقَرَّبٍ وَنَبِيٍّ مُرْسَلٍ أَوْ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»

[Machine] "And indeed the Prophet ﷺ took the hand of Abdullah and taught him the tashahhud in prayer: 'All greetings, blessings and good things are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. Zuhayr said, 'I memorized it from Al-Hasan's handwriting and he narrated it from his memory. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.' Zuhayr said, 'Then I went back to my own memorization and said, 'When you say this, you have completed your prayer. If you want to stand up, then stand up, and if you want to sit, then sit.'"

وَأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَعَلَّمَهُ التَّشَهُّدَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ « التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ عَقَلْتُ حِينَ كَتَبْتُهُ مِنَ الْحَسَنِ فَحَدَّثَنِي مِنْ حِفْظِهِ مِنَ الْحَسَنِ بِبَقِيَّتِهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ» قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُ إِلَى حِفْظِي قَالَ «فَإِذَا قُلْتَ هَذَا فَقَدْ قَضَيْتَ صَلَاتَكَ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَقُومَ فَقُمْ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَقْعُدَ فَاقْعُدْ»

إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ أُوتِيَ فَوَاتِحَ الْكَلَامِ وَخَوَاتِمَهُ أَوْ جَوَامِعَ الْخَيْرِ وَخَوَاتِمَهُ وَإِنَّا كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا يَقُولُ إِذَا جَلَسْنَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ حَتَّى عَلَّمَنَا فَقَالَ «قُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»

[Machine] They used to pray behind the Prophet ﷺ , then one of them said, "Peace be upon Allah." So, the Prophet ﷺ asked, "Who said, 'Peace be upon Allah'? Verily, Allah is peace. But say, 'Greetings are for Allah, prayers and good deeds. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."

كَانُوا يُصَلُّونَ خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ مِنْهُمُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ فَقَالَ مَنِ الْقَائِلُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ؟ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

[Machine] When we sat in prayer, we said, "Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon us from our Lord, peace be upon Gabriel and Michael, peace be upon so and so." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah is As-Salam (the Source of Peace). So when you sit in prayer, say greetings to Allah, prayers, and good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, the mercy of Allah, and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah." When he says that, every righteous servant in the heavens or on the earth is affected by it. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and then he chooses from speech what he wishes.

كُنَّا إِذَا قَعَدْنَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ قُلْنَا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ رَبِّنَا السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ وَمِيكَائِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ إِذَا قَعَدْتُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَإِذَا قَالَ ذَلِكَ أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ أَوَ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ يَتَخَيَّرُ مِنَ الْكَلَامِ مَا شَاءَ

[Machine] From Hammad, Mansour, Husayn, Al-A'mash, and Abu Hashim, from Abu Wael and Abu Ishaq, from Al-Aswad and Abu Al-Ahwas, from Abdullah, who said: "We did not know what to say in the prayer, so we would say, 'Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il.' But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the Tashahhud, so he said: 'Indeed, Allah is As-Salam. So, when you sit for two units, say greetings to Allah, prayers, and good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.' Abu Wael said, regarding the hadith of Abdullah from the Prophet ﷺ : 'When you say it, it reaches every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth.' Abu Ishaq said, in the hadith of Abdullah: 'When you say it, it reaches every close angel, messenger prophet, or righteous servant.' I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."

عَنْ حَمَّادٍ وَمَنْصُورٍ وَحُصَيْنٍ وَالْأَعْمَشِ وَأَبِي هَاشِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ وَأَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عنِ الْأَسْوَدِ وَأَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ نَقُولُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ فَعَلَّمَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ التَّشَهُّدَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا جَلَسْتُمْ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ قَالَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ فِي حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِذَا قُلْتَهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ قَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ فِي حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللهِ إِذَا قُلْتَهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ مَلَكٍ مُقَرَّبٍ أَوَ نَبِيٍّ مُرْسَلٍ أَوَ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

[Machine] We used to say in prayer "Peace be upon Allah." The Prophet ﷺ heard that and said, "Do not say 'Peace be upon Allah,' for Allah is the Peace. Rather say the greetings belong to Allah, and the prayers and the good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger."

كُنَّا نَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ فَسَمِعَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَا تَقُولُوا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ؛ فَإِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

"When we prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we used to say: "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah (SWT), peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do not say "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah, for Allah is As-Salam." Rather say: "At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1168)

[Machine] We used to say in prayer, "Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Gabriel and Michael, and every angel whose name we know." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not say, 'Peace be upon Allah,' for Allah is Peace." He then taught us, "Greetings to Allah, prayers, and good deeds. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. So when you say this, you have encompassed every angel, every prophet, and every righteous servant in your words."

كُنَّا نَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ وَمِيكَائِيلَ وَكُلِّ مَلَكٍ نَعْلَمُ اسْمَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا تَقُولُوا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ؛ فَإِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ» ثُمَّ عَلَّمَنَا «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ فَإِذَا قُلْتُمْ هَذَا فَقَدْ دَخَلَ فِي قَوْلِكُمْ كُلُّ مَلَكٍ وَكُلُّ نَبِيٍّ وَكُلُّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ»

[Machine] We used to say in the prayer: "Peace be upon so-and-so, peace be upon so-and-so." And we would name those whom we knew from among the angels and prophets. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, "Indeed, Allah is As-Salam (the Source of Peace)." Then he taught us the Tashahhud, and we would learn it just as one of us would learn a Surah from the Quran. He said: "Say: Greetings, prayers, and pure words are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger."

كُنَّا نَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ فَنُسَمِّي مَنْ عَلِمْنَا مِنْ عِلْمِنَا مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالْأَنْبِيَاءِ فَقَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ» ثُمَّ عَلَّمَنَا التَّشَهُّدَ فَكُنَّا نَتَعَلَّمُهُ كَمَا يَتَعَلَّمُ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا السُّورَةَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ قُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

[Machine] We used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and the people would say, "Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Jibril (Gabriel), peace be upon Mikail (Michael), peace be upon the near angels." So the Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not say 'peace be upon Allah', for indeed Allah is As-Salam (the source of peace)." He taught them the Tashahhud and said, "Say: Greetings, prayers, and good deeds. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."

كُنَّا نُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَكَانَ النَّاسُ يَقُولُونَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جَبْرَائِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ «لَا تَقُولُوا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ؛ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ» قَالَ فَعَلَّمَهُمُ التَّشَهُّدَ فَقَالَ قُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

[Machine] We used to say in prayer, "Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Jibril, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the Tashahhud: "All greetings, prayers, and good deeds are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."

كُنَّا نَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ حَتَّى عَلَّمَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ التَّشَهُّدَ «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»

We used to pray behind the Prophet ﷺ and used to say: "As-Salamu 'Al-Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah himself is As-Salam (Name of Allah), so you should say: 'at-Tahiyatu lil-lahi was-sala-watu wattaiyibatu, as-salamu ʿalaika aiyyuha-n-nabiyyu wa rahmatu-l-lahi wa barakatuhu, as-salamu ʿalaina wa ʿala ʿibadi-l-lahi as-salihin. Ashhadu an la ilaha il-lallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ʿabduhu wa rasuluhu."' (Using translation from Bukhārī 7381)

عَبْدُ اللهِ كُنَّا نُصَلِّي خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَقُولُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

[Machine] About Mansour, Suleiman, Hammad, Abu Hashim, and Mugheera, from Abu Wael, from Abdullah who said:

"We used to say in our prayers: 'Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Gabriel.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, 'Indeed, Allah is As-Salam (the Source of Peace), but you should say: Greetings belong to Allah, prayers and good deeds. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.'"

عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ وَسُلَيْمَانَ وَحَمَّادٍ وَأَبِي هَاشِمٍ وَمُغِيرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ كُنَّا نَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ فَقَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

[Machine] When we sat down, we said peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Gabriel, peace be upon Michael, peace be upon the angels. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us some words. When we say them, we send peace upon every angel in the sky and every righteous servant on earth. "Greetings and prayers and good deeds be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."

كُنَّا إِذَا جَلَسْنَا نَقُولُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ فَعَلَّمَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَلَامًا إِذَا قُلْنَاهُ سَلَّمْنَا عَلَى كُلِّ مَلَكٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَعَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»

[Machine] We did not know what to say in every unit of prayer, we glorify, exalt, and praise our Lord and indeed, Muhammad ﷺ knew the opening and closing supplications. He taught us that when we sit in every two units of prayer, we should say the greetings, prayers, good words, and peace upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Then, let him choose the supplication that he finds most pleasing to him and let him make it.

كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ نُسَبِّحُ وَنُكَبِّرُ وَنَحْمَدُ رَبَّنَا وَإِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ عَلِمَ فَوَاتِحَ الْخَيْرِ وَخَوَاتِمَهُ أَوَقَالَ جَوَامِعَهُ وَإِنَّهُ قَالَ لَنَا إِذَا قَعَدْتُمْ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ لِيَتَخَيَّرْ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ أَعْجَبَهُ إِلَيْهِ فَلْيَدْعُ بِهِ

when we (prayed and) sat up during prayer along the Messenger of Allah (may peach be upon him), we said: “Peace be to Allah before it is supplicated for His servants; peace be to so and so. “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not say “Peace be to Allah ,”for Allah Himself is peace. When one of you sits(during the prayer), he should say: The adoration of the tongue are due to Allah, and acts of worship and all good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants. When you say that, it reaches every upright servant in heavens and earth or between heavens and earth. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and apostle. Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him and offer it. كُنَّا نَتَشَهَّدُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَنَقُولُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ قَبْلَ عِبَادِهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ نُعَدِّدُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا جَلَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَقُلِ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ فَإِنَّهُ إِذَا قَالَ أَحَدُكُمُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ

"Before the tashahhud was enjoined, when we prayed we used to say: 'Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah (SWT), pace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do not say this, for indeed Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, is As-Salam. Rather say: "At-tahiyyatu lillahi wasalawatu wat-tayibaat, as-salamu 'alaika ayah-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina a 'ala ibad illahis-salihin, ashadu an la ilaha ill Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu. (All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.)" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1277)

أَنْ يُفْرَضَ التَّشَهُّدُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ وَمِيكَائِيلَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَقُولُوا هَكَذَا فَإِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ»

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, is As-Salam the source of peace; the One free from all faults), so when any one of you sits (during the prayer), let him say: At-tahiyyatu lillahi wasalawatu wat-tayibaat, as-salamu 'alaika ayah-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina a 'ala ibad illahis-salihin, ashadu an la ilaha ill Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu. (All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.)" Then after that, let him choose whatever words he wants." قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا قَعَدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ لْيَتَخَيَّرْ مِنَ الْكَلَامِ بَعْدُ مَا شَاءَ

when we (prayed and) sat up during prayer along the Messenger of Allah (may peach be upon him), we said: “Peace be to Allah before it is supplicated for His servants; peace be to so and so. “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not say “Peace be to Allah ,”for Allah Himself is peace. When one of you sits(during the prayer), he should say: The adoration of the tongue are due to Allah, and acts of worship and all good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants. When you say that, it reaches every upright servant in heavens and earth or between heavens and earth. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and apostle. Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him and offer it. كُنَّا إِذَا جَلَسْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الصَّلَاةِ قُلْنَا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ وَفُلَانٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَقُولُوا السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ فَإِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ وَلَكِنْ إِذَا جَلَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَإِنَّكُمْ إِذَا قُلْتُمْ ذَلِكَ أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ لِيَتَخَيَّرْ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ بَعْدُ أَعْجَبَهُ إِلَيْهِ يَدْعُو بِهِ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us to say when we sat following two rak'ahs: 'At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1162)

عَلَّمَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَقُولَ إِذَا جَلَسْنَا فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ: (التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامٌ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ۔)

"We used not to know what we should say in each rak'ah apart from glorifying, magnifying and praising our Lord. But Muhammad ﷺ taught us everything about what is good. He said: "When you sit following every two rak'ahs, then say: At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger), then choose any supplication that you like and call upon Allah the Mighty and Sublime with it.'" كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ غَيْرَ أَنْ نُسَبِّحَ وَنُكَبِّرَ وَنَحْمَدَ رَبَّنَا وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ عُلِّمَ فَوَاتِحَ الْخَيْرِ وَخَوَاتِمَهُ فَقَالَ: «إِذَا قَعَدْتُمْ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُولُوا: (التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ) وَلْيَتَخَيَّرْ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ أَعْجَبَهُ إِلَيْهِ فَيَدْعُو اللهَ۔»

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the Tashahhud in prayer and the Tashahhud in need, so he said: "The Tashahhud in prayer (the greetings to Allah, the prayers, and the good deeds, peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings, peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger)."

عَلَّمَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ التَّشَهُّدَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَالتَّشَهُّدَ فِي الْحَاجَةِ فَقَالَ: «التَّشَهُّدُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ (التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا، وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ۔)

"We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we did not know anything, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us: "Every time you sit (in prayer), say: At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1166)

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَا نَعْلَمُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «قُولُوا فِي كُلِّ جِلْسَةٍ (التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا، وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ۔)»

"We used not to know what to say when we prayed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us some eloquent and concise words. He said to us: 'Say: "At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)." (One of the narrators) 'Ubaidullah said: "Zaid bin Hammad said, narrating from Ibrahim, that 'Alqamah said: 'I saw Ibn Mas'ud teaching us these words just as he taught us the Quran." كُنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا فَعَلَّمَنَا نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ جَوَامِعَ الْكَلَامِ فَقَالَ لَنَا: «قُولُوا (التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامٌ عَلَيْنَا، وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ۔)»

"When we prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we used to say: "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah (SWT), peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do not say "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah, for Allah is As-Salam." كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ نَقُولُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «لَا تَقُولُوا: السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ، وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا: (التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا، وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ۔)»

"When we prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we used to say: "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah (SWT), peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do not say "Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah, for Allah is As-Salam." كُنَّا نُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَقُولُ السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ۔ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «لَا تَقُولُوا: السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللهِ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ، وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا: (التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا، وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ۔)»

The adoration of the tongue are due to Allah, and acts of worship, all good things. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Ibn ‘Umar said: I added: “And Allah’s blessings, peace be upon us, and upon Allah’s upright servants. I testify that there is not god but Allah. “Ibn ‘Umar said: I added to it: He is alone, no one is His associate, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and His Apostle. عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ فِي التَّشَهُّدِ «(التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا، وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ۔)»

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the tashahhud just as he taught us a surah from the Quran: "At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina wa 'ala 'ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1171)

عَلَّمَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ التَّشَهُّدَ كَمَا يُعَلِّمُنَا السُّورَةَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ، وَكَفُّهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ: (التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا، وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ۔)

He heard Abu Musa say: "The Prophet of Allah ﷺ addressed us and taught us our Sunnah and our prayer. He said: 'When you pray, make your rows straight and let one of you lead you in prayer. When the Imam says the takbir, then say the takbir. When he recites 'Not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor those who went astray' then say: "Amin" and Allah will answer you. When he says the takbir and bows, then say the takbir and bow. The Imam bows before you do and stands up before you do.' The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: 'This makes up for that. And when he says: "'Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears the one who praises Him),' then say: "Allahumma Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (O Allah, our Lord, and to You be the praise), " Allah will hear you, for Allah has said on the lips of His Prophet ﷺ: "Allah hears the one who praises Him." And when he (the Imam) says the takbir and prostrates, then say the takbir and prostrate. The Imam prostrates before you do and sits up before you do.' The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: 'This makes up for that. And when he is sitting, let the first thing that any one of you says be: At-tahiyaatut-tayyibatus-salawatuLillah, salamun 'alayka ayyuhanabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, salamun 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin, ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh (All compliments, good words and prayers are due to Allah, peace be upon you O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)- seven phrases which are the greeting of the prayer.'" إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَطَبَنَا فَعَلَّمَنَا سُنَّتَنَا وَبَيَّنَ لَنَا صَلَاتَنَا فَقَالَ: «أَقِيمُوا صُفُوفَكُمْ، ثُمَّ لِيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ، فَإِذَا كَبَّرَ فَكَبِّرُوا، وَإِذَا قَالَ {وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ} فَقُولُوا: (آمِينَ) يُجِبْكُمُ اللهُ، وَإِذَا كَبَّرَ الْإِمَامُ وَرَكَعَ، فَكَبِّرُوا وَارْكَعُوا، فَإِنَّ الْإِمَامَ يَرْكَعُ قَبْلَكُمْ وَيَرْفَعُ قَبْلَكُمْ۔» قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ: «فَتِلْكَ بِتِلْكَ، وَإِذَا قَالَ (سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ)، فَقُولُوا: (رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ) يَسْمَعُ اللهُ لَكُمْ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ قَالَ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ، ثُمَّ إِذَا كَبَّرَ الْإِمَامُ وَسَجَدَ، فَكَبِّرُوا وَاسْجُدُوا، فَإِنَّ الْإِمَامَ يَسْجُدُ قَبْلَكُمْ وَيَرْفَعُ قَبْلَكُمْ۔»

قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ: «فَتِلْكَ بِتِلْكَ، فَإِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ الْقَعْدَةِ، فَلْيَكُنْ مِنْ أَوَّلِ قَوْلِ أَحَدِكُمْ أَنْ يَقُولَ: (التَّحِيَّاتُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ لِلَّهِ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا، وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ۔)»

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, is As-Salam the source of peace; the One free from all faults), so when any one of you sits (during the prayer), let him say: At-tahiyyatu lillahi wasalawatu wat-tayibaat, as-salamu 'alaika ayah-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina a 'ala ibad illahis-salihin, ashadu an la ilaha ill Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu. (All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.)" Then after that, let him choose whatever words he wants." قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا قَعَدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عَبَّادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهَ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ يَتَخَيَّرُ بعد مِنَ الْكَلَامِ مَا شَاءَ
